The executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile arm has confirmed the existence of company’s smartwatch, theGalaxy Gear.
In an interview with The Korea Times this week, Lee Young-hee gave brief details about the wearable tech device, saying that the Galaxy Gear would use a “non-flexible display”. The watch, which would connect to Samsung’s mobile devices, is said to be aimed at “young trend setters”.
"The new device will enhance and enrich the current smart mobile experience in many ways. It will lead a new trend in smart mobile communications. We are confident that the Gear will add meaningful momentum to the mobile industry,” added Lee.
Samsung previously filed a trademark for Galaxy Gear and confirmed it was working on some kind of smartwatch.
Lee went on to state that official announcement of the smartwatch would take place on September 4th, at a Samsung press event in Berlin. The consumer electronics fair IFA opens two days later on the 6th.
The Samsung Galaxy Note III is also rumoured to be showcased at the event. Lee confirmed that that was the case, but refused to give further details.
Several mobile manufacturers, including Samsung and Apple, have been rumoured to be designing smartwatches for some time now. Concrete details about Apple’s rumoured device, nicknamed the'iWatch', and Microsoft's potential smartwatch, are yet to emerge.
The Sony Smartwatch 2 arrives in the UK next month.
