There's been a lot of buzz these past couple days about the iPhone's FCC filing and what it says -- or rather, what it doesn't say -- about the handset's internals. The fear basically revolves around the fact that a lack of testing on the GSM 900 and 1800MHz bands indicates that it lacks those bands entirely, but we can assure the globetrotters out there jonesin' for an iPhone come next month that there'll be a full range of RF spectrum waiting for you. How do we know? Well, first of all, in the year 2007 (or 2005, for that matter) it's simply idiotic to release a wide-appeal phone with any fewer than four GSM bands. Quadband GSM chipsets have been commodity items for some time now and add virtually no expense to a handset's internals. Second of all, quadband phones never have their non-US bands mentioned in a filing, particularly in a test report.
Let's take a look at a released phone that we know to be quadband -- that is, a phone that supports GSM on the 850, 900, 1800, and 1900MHz bands, offering coverage pretty much anywhere in the world that a GSM tower exists. For our purposes, we'll pick on the RIM BlackBerry 8800. You're going to get a frightening peek into our daily FCC-lurking insanity here.

What's a 17 year old doing presenting a study before a gathering of heart specialists? Why, drawing the connection between iPods and heart implants, of course. According to student Jay Thaker, the findings of his study showed that of 100 installed pacemakers, electrical interference was detected 50% of the time when an iPod was held at a distance of 2-inches from the chest for 5-10 seconds. We'd really liked to have been there to see him try and pitch this study of his to the variety of seniors with heart problems who participated (they averaged 77 years of age), but don't get alarmed, we have a feeling your grandparents -- who've probably never even heard of that newfangled iPoddie doohickie -- won't find out first hand whether this is the real deal.

Sony Pictures Television has announced plans to release 14 new games for mobile phones in North America during the course of 2007.
The titles will include God of War: Betrayal, which is set after the events of the first GOW PS2 game. It will see Kratos embarking on a quest to clear his name after being wrongly accused of betraying the Olympians.
There are two Spider-Man games down for release - Spider-Man 3, a 2D side-scroller based on the recently released movie, and Spider-Man Puzzle, a casual title where players match game pieces to score points.
Sony has also announced Jeopardy! 2007, which features a new interface and five different play modes, and Jump That Car, where players drive a buggy around hilly landscapes. Then there's Snoop Dogg Cruisin', which sees players trying to impress the rap star with their driving skills.
"Sony Pictures Television continues its tradition of robust mobile offerings with the release of these games," said Eric Berger, vice president of mobile entertainment at SPTV.
"Building from our vast library of properties, we're developing the most compelling and engaging games for both casual players and gamers."

While iTunes 7.1 claimed to play nicer with Windows Vista, there was still reason for avid iPod users to hold back on upgrading, and now it looks like those final issues have been ironed out. Starting today, Vista users can download a software update that purportedly solves the problems some users were having as their iPod became corrupted when "ejecting them using Windows Explorer or the Safely Remove Hardware function in the system tray." Of course, those of you who got burned by this aren't as apt to become guinea pigs in finding out just how well (or not) the patch actually works, but for those mettlesome folks out there, feel free to hit the read link and commence downloading.

Selatra the global distributor of mobile Java games, announced today the availability of a mobile version of the classic Subbuteo table football game.
Called Subbuteo Mobile, the game was created under license from Hasbro Properties and is expected to open up the Subbuteo experience to a whole new generation of fans.
The game has made a smooth transition to the mobile world, retaining many of the quirks, moves and gameplay feel of the original title, thanks to first class game development by Creative North Studios.
“Selatra’s established distribution network in over 55 countries will ensure the mobile Subbuteo experience will reach an audience of over 200 million subscribers.” said Sean Cronin, CEO of Selatra. “‘Subbuteo is 40 years old this year and there are many fans with fond memories of playing hard fought tournaments. The mobile version has the ability to excite a whole new generation of football fans and we are delighted at the trust Hasbro has placed in us.”
Cronin also had words of praise for game developers, Creative North:
“We are impressed with the care and attention Creative North has lavished on this project,” said Cronin. “This collaboration with Hasbro and Creative North reinforces our strategy of releasing only the highest quality branded and non-branded games to our retail partners,” said Cronin.
Phil Mundy CEO of Creative North added: “Being Subbuteo fans ourselves we have given the mobile incarnation lots of loving care. There are plenty of skill practice opportunities for new players, so you don’t have to be familiar with the original game to play it. I hope Selatra’s audiences get as much fun playing this game as we have had developing it.”
Subbuteo Mobile is available on all GSM and 3G networks. Selatra’s full range of games is available on www.selatra.com

Mobile media company Player X has partnered with 3D mobile games developer FISHLABS to distribute its premium content in Europe, Asia and South America.
Under the terms of the aggregation deal, Player X has acquired exclusive distribution rights to critically acclaimed titles such as IMGA-short listed Blades & Magic™ and the multiple top award-winning DEEP™, the latter being launched across all three continents from mid-May. Player X will also announce three further FISHLABS games towards the end of Q3 07.
Player X has direct distribution deals with more than 110 mobile operators with a potential global footprint of more than 2.6 billion people and has recently taken top titles such as Miami Vice and Wallace & Gromit to places as disparate as Latvia, Mexico and India.
“Since more operators now outsource their mobile game needs, it’s vital for any content provider to find a distribution partner with as many direct channels as possible. Player X was our first choice to partner with because of their impressive list of global distribution channels and its highly professional in-house team,” said Michael Schade, CEO & Co-Founder of Fishlabs."
Player X will also distribute five other FISHLABS titles that include multiple top award-winning Galaxy on Fire™, Planet Riders™, Heli Strike™, Burning Tires™ and Tank Raid™ in APAC territories.
“We deliberately work with only a small number of content providers so we can ensure the best possible service for their quality products. Fishlabs’ 3D games are some of the best out there and we’re looking forward to taking these titles to gamers all around the planet,” said Tony Pearce, Player X CEO.
The news follows Player X's recent moves in ramping up its presence in the mobile games market by partnering with companies such as Sky TV and EMI Music and extending its relationship with FremantleMedia by adding a PrizePlay element to evergreen titles such as Family Fortunes and The Price Is Right. These efforts were recognised earlier this year when it was selected as a Finalist for the prestigious 2007 Red Herring Top 100 Awards.

A new Die Hard game is in development, and while those of you still waiting for a fitting sequel to the awesome Die Hard Trilogy (no, we refuse to count Viva Las Vegas) are still out of luck, it's good news for people using mass transit or killing idle bathroom minutes. That's right: Gameloft has announced they've nabbed the mobile game rights to Live Free or Die Hard, due out in theaters this summer.
We know it may not be what you were hoping for, but take heart. Gameloft VP Gonzague de Vallois said that they're trying to capture the movie's "action, intrigue and humor" ... in their cell phone game. We'll give them action and (maybe) intrigue, but humor? Is it possible? Can pressing the "7" key make you chortle? We'll find out when the game is released before the movie's June 27 debut.

press release:
Ozura Mobile (“Ozura”), a leading international publisher and developer of mobile entertainment, and ChinaByte today announced the official launch of its first and exclusive tournament based mobile gaming community portal “MOSTAR” in China.
MOSTAR runs on FunlogiX™, the proprietary Tournament Based Mobile Gaming Community (TOMOGIC) platform developed by Ozura which provides telcos and partners with a platform to build and manage mobile gaming community. FunlogiX™ also provides full-fledged suites of gaming services which are customizable to each telecommunication company’s commercial and marketing requirement.
In contrast with Ozura’s previous deployments with major telcos such as Maxis, Indosat, XL and AIS, MOSTAR differs by being the first community incorporated with virtual currency charging system. MOSTAR uses its own virtual currency called “M coin” which is served as the prepaid credit for users to download their desired mobile games over the community portal. In the next phase of MOSTAR, “M coin” can also be purchased via scratch cards, IVR (Interactive Voice Response), credit cards as well as bank cards.
“With the implementation of this new charging system, this has proven that FunlogiX™ is very flexible in terms of customization to meet different clients’ requirements. This new system enables us to work closer with ChinaByte to further increase and improve our gaming distribution and market share coverage in China. Furthermore, we can respond effectively by enhancing the Funlogix™ adaptation level with future upgrades and enhancements” said H.E.Mah, Ozura’s Vice President of Marketing.
MOSTAR offers users with a wide range of mobile games including tournament, multiplayer and standalone games. The first selected tournament game is Spot Check. This game’s storyline is based on the Gempak gang's reaction to a random spot check, a random and sudden search for items that are deemed illegal by the school systems. The Spot Check game is pre-destined to be a hit title among casual gamers and fans of the comic alike.
In addition to the launch of Spot Check, a multiplayer game The Duel Online is also presented in MOSTAR. The Duel Online, a highly colorful turn-based strategy game, is playable in both solo and multiplayer modes with the latter boasting great interactive features including but not limited to uploading of scores, an integrated lobby area, chatting and a buddy list. The gameplay is simplistic but strategy is needed to truly get a feel for the game and its inherent challenge.
Mr. Lee, Chief Executive Officer of ChinaByte commented “This partnership with Ozura emphasizes both parties’ commitment to significantly expand the mobile data market with pioneering partnerships. In addition to that, it is equally paramount that we have a firm belief in the mobile gaming and entertainment segment which will be the key drivers to mass market usage of mobile data. Mobile gaming represents the next step in the evolution of the games industry, by adding interactivity, and mobility to traditional gaming options."
China had 449 million cell phone users as of October 2006, more than the populations of Japan and the U.S. combined and China Mobile, the world's largest mobile operator, itself has surpassed the total population of the U.S., which subscriber base grew to 301 million. The number of handset users in China is expected to rise by 11% to more than 500 million in 2007 and will add another 160 million users from next year until 2010, taking the total to 660 million.
“ChinaByte is one of the top 10 service providers in China. The amalgamation of Ozura’s technology and ChinaByte’s close partnership with China Mobile as well as their strong marketing channels in China, we are definitely positive on the future of the mobile gaming community in China,” said Mah.

THQ Wireless announces an agreement with Team 17 to bring a new chapter their brilliant trajectory shooter Worms to mobile phones worldwide next month. Being a die-hard fan of the Worms franchise, I am officially starting to get intrigued by this...cell-phone gaming they speak of.
The game will be called Worms 2007 and will feature the same gameplay we all know and love (unless we don't) along with a host of new weapons and features, such as the ability to play over a cell phone. Always a good mobile game feature, or so I've heard.
The game will also feature full 3D backgrounds of high-end phones that support it, while allowing us low-teks a chance to play a depressingly flat 2D version.
So, anyone have any tips on what sort of phone I should get to dip into mobile gaming? Right now I have a Samsung SGH-P207 half-covered in dried crazy glue due to an unfortunate pocket explosion. Will that do?

Whispers on the street have it that Apple has run into some issues with the iPhone's OS, preventing a solid supply of the much-ballyhooed phone to hit stores in time for the launch. A source from the manufacturer has this to say on the situation: "It does not look feasible that Apple will be able to ship units out in May to make the shipping date in the US (June), so expect units to trickle by end of June or early July."
Is it just me, or is the iPhone sharing more traits with the much-maligned Playstation 3 than anyone cares to admit? Let's see: The pricing is exactly the same ($500 and $600 models), there are manufacturing delays that are going to make for a very unpleasant launch, and both products are banking on the popularity of their predecessors to become huge sellers. Add to that a touchscreen without tactile feedback that might not be what people are expecting and this might not be the home run that Apple (and everyone else) is expecting.

Surprised? We aren't; we were actually waiting for these to start hitting dodgy vendors the world over. It seems that Fujian Huamin Import and Export Company Limited has an iPhone for you -- if you are willing to accept a poor quality substitute (note the tape on the camera lens in the gallery) that may or may not actually ship, that is. We won't regurgitate the specs for this device, but suffice it to say, they are miraculously similar to what we have seen from Apple (multi-touch included.) But like a car wreck, we can't help but peek -- so feel free to hit the link for the rest of the misery goods.
