Someone's figured out a way to combine gadget obsession with chocoholism, and it doesn't bode well for people with self-control issues. A company called "Corporate Gift Showcase" will sell you many pounds of chocolate molded into the shape of iPods, BlackBerries, laptops and HDTVs. They're ostensibly meant to be as gifts from companies purchased in bulk, but there's nothing stopping you from ordering 1,000 chocolate remote controls. That's right, nothing stopping you. So what are you waiting for?

Capcom is reaching for a broader audience to grow its business, including several upcoming mobile phone titles. A direct port of Mega Man II and a looser, but faithful port of Street Fighter II will ship in June; trivia game, Millionaire Music Edition, will be released in May; and MMO, Shade II, is scheduled for the first quarter of 2008. All titles will be available on various carriers and support Java and BREW phone platforms.
Mega Man II and Street Fighter II may resonate most with long-time gamers. Capcom said that Mega Man II is a literal port of the original. Street Fighter II, however, has about "80 percent" of the original game's combinations in order to adapt to more awkward keypad mashing. In-development versions of both titles seem about as fluid as their originals; maybe there's more to this mobile gaming thing than trivia. (If not, there's Millionaire Music Edition, as in "Who Wants to Be A ...")
Shade II -- there were so many unanswered questions from the first Shade -- seeks to expand the MMORPG mobile space. Capcom was cagey with statistics about the popularity of Shade, saying that it has 600,000 unique users, but not saying how many concurrent players are in the game. Still, like the first game, Shade II will be a basic MMO with quests, leveling, cooperative play, and even PVP. Maybe that New York electronics law is to protect ourselves from injury if mobile MMOs become popular.
Prices will vary with carriers, but the games are expected to cost a couple dollars or less on a monthly subscription, or less than $10 to buy.

Rumor has it that Apple is planning to release a Wi-Fi–enabled iPod by the end of the year. Component manufacturers in the far east claim that Apple has orders in for Wi-Fi modules for the music player, which would set up the iPod to compete directly with the Zune in the not-exactly-crowded Wi-Fi-enabled DAP market.
An iPhone-esque, widescreen iPod with Wi-Fi? Sounds good to me, as long as Apple learns from Microsoft's mistakes when it comes to implementing Wi-Fi on a music player.

Oh dear, just when we thought we'd had our fill of exploding Apple devices, along comes an Australian forum member named eeno who saw his first generation iPod nano go up in flames, and has some snuff-esque pics of the aftermath. As is usually the case with these things, eeno's iPod was charging when it happened. He says the force of the battery's explosion sent the iPod off his PC onto the floor, where it continued to smoke and spark until he unplugged the USB charging cable from the back of his computer. Since his iPod is out of warranty, the local computer repair shop didn't do him much good, but they did take a few pics to send to Apple. Hopefully this iPod was just an anomaly, and we won't be seeing a whole wave of these explosions as 1G nanos exit their warranties and head towards retirement -- but somehow we fear the worse.

This rumor is just about as old as iTunes itself, and while it has remained fairly dormant due to Steve's insistence on maintaining the oh-so-lucrative existing model, the subscription-based iTunes question has somehow surfaced again. According to Les Ottolenghi, CEO of INTENT MediaWorks, Apple could be leaning towards implementing such a service "within the next six months," and even went so far as to suggest we not believe any Apple-based denials that could potentially follow. Interestingly, several analysts even suggested that subscription-based systems haven't garnered much fanfare simply because the head honcho in digital music distribution isn't playing along. Unfortunately, no hints were dropped in regard to future pricing schemes, but you'll only be waiting about half a year to find out, anyway.

Something's afoot on the iTunes store. First we notice MGM/United Artists (MGM/UA) movies start showing up on the store in the New Releases area, with a few MGM flicks on board, albeit moldy oldies such as Mad Max, Rocky, Dances with Wolves and Robocop. United Artists (which is actually an MGM company) so far checks in with just one movie, the don't-forget-to-miss-it Ronin. Slim pickings so far, but added to the current iTunes list of movies from Lionsgate, Paramount and Disney, at least it's a little better.
At the same time, the free Washington Post video wonkcast is now offered up on the iTunes store in 720p. Sure, Apple has served up quite a few trailers in HD on its website, but could this be foreshadowing of 720p-ness to come on iTunes? Strangely enough, 720p needs to be down-rezzed to play back on an iPod. But 720p offerings give one more good reason to consider the Apple TV hardware, which after all, is capable of that lowest HD rez.
What will happen next?

We're not sure exactly how to transform your video-playing Apple TV into an emulation station just yet, but we do know that there's an awful lot of Apple TV hacking going on and the above video purports to show a very functional copy of Super Mario Bros. running off the tiny little box.
AwkwardTV has a page set up listing some emulators that work with the Apple TV writing, "These emulators are being tested with standard ROM's on the AppleTV running the original OS except for being slightly modified to add SSH." Is anyone tired enough of waiting for Apple's inevitable game offerings to upgrade their Apple TV themself?

Apple has sold 100m iPods, more the company tacitly claimed, than Sony's equally iconic Walkman personal cassette player had in the first five-and-a-half years it was on the market.
The shiny white music player was launched in a Mac-only, 5GB version in November 2001 - neither the first portable digital music device nor the first to contain a hard drive, but soon the dominant product in its class nonetheless.
"iPod has helped millions of people around the world rekindle their passion for music," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs in the company's announcement, and that's the nub of the matter. The growth of the iTunes online content shop is all very well, but the iPod's success was really founded on people going back to their CD collections, ripping them and enjoying songs they probably hadn't listened to for years. All they needed was a good excuse to do so, and the increasingly capacious iPod line gave them that opportunity.
But let's not forget the advertising. Nothing comes of nothing, and without Apple shouting about its player on bus shelters, hoardings, occasionally on TV and elsewhere, it's hard to see the iPod reaching into the public consciousness the way it has done and certainly no rival device has. Apple may have bought its success, but it was the only music player company sufficiently savvy to do so. It certainly wasn't the only one that might have needed to.

It's a good thing Apple isn't fighting back against Apple TV hacks, because while we haven't yet seen any hard evidence that Linux on the Apple TV is even as far as is claimed, apparently some industrious hackers have already made some real progress in shoehorning Tux into the minuscule media device. According to the Mactel-Linux wiki, users have managed to capture the ATV's boot loader and run a custom Linux kernel; right now that kernel and the primitive ATV build apparently seem to support WiFi, SpeedStep, and EFI, but there are issues with USB (you're telling us!), and the graphics aren't settled either. We'll know they're done once we can successfully play Doom in 1080p -- but not a moment sooner.

It looks like Hello Kitty's rampage through the gadget world isn't showing any signs of letting up, with an otherwise unremarkable iPod car charger / FM transmitter the latest device to get its irresistible stamp of approval. Compatible with 3G, 4G, 5G, Photo, Mini, and nano varieties of iPods, the device will plug into your car's cigarette lighter and pump tunes straight to your car's radio at the same time, promising a minimum amount of distortion in the process. We have to say we're a bit skeptical of the stated 3 mile operating range, however -- that seems a stretch even with the mighty Hello Kitty behind it.

Size, it seems, no longer matters. Or rather it doesn't matter as much as a built-in radio. Yes, we're talking what consumers want from future iPods - at least what rock-centric radio station listeners demand, according to a new poll.
US consultancy Jacobs Media placed polls on 69 radio stations' websites last month. Some 25,000 people responded. Around 47 per cent of them already own an iPod or other MP3 player, up from 21 per cent in 2005, the first year the poll was conducted. Among those who don't own such a device, 45 per cent claimed it was highly likely they'll buy one this year.
The message for Apple, SanDisk, Creative and co. is that 33 per cent of respondents said they want their next player to contain an FM tuner. That figure rises to 43 per cent when you look solely at folk who already own an iPod - they made up 57 per cent of respondents.
Overall, only 24 per cent wanted more song-storage capacity; seven per cent want a bigger screen; seven per cent want video playback; and just three per cent hope their next music player will be physically smaller than their current one.
Not that you wouldn't expect radio listeners to favour radios on their music devices, though it's telling that Apple has managed to build up such a lead despite never building a radio into one of its iPods, though it does offer an FM radio accessory.
But there are signs MP3 players are replacing radio as the prime form of in-car entertainment. Just under half of the poll's respondents said they connect their players to their vehicles, something that's only going to increase as more cars incorporate iPod connectivity or at the very least make it easy to hook a music player up to the stereo.
The results of Jacobs Media's poll come a week after market watcher iSuppli forecast ongoing year-on-year increases in media player sales, at least until 2011, when the upward curve begins to flatten.

Hudson's Kororinpa, a game so short that it has to stand on a stool to get served at bars, has been ported from the Wii to Japan's i-Mode phones. The mobile version doesn't have any arm-waving shenanigans, of course, but it does appear to faithfully replicate most other aspects of the game. Kororinpa Mobile even does a decent job of copying the Wii original's 480i visuals. The i-Mode version was released in Japan yesterday, where it can be downloaded to 3G phones for just ¥315 (US$2.67).

Remember that iPod mini maxed out with a Compact Flash card mod? Well, Mark Hoekstra is back with a new CF card modding picnic that works with any 1/2/3/4G iPod. The mod works (eventually, anyway) by installing a CF adapter of Hoekstra's design. No need to solder all 88 connections yourself! By removing the spinning hard disk, the mod also promises to extend your battery life. As Mark points out, he "won't go all Art Lebedev" on us; he'll produce the adapter for a reasonable cost and within a reasonable time. Good, cause high-density CF cards aren't cheap.

It seems like every month a new gadget goes up in flames. This month it's an iPod nano that was caught exploding while being charged via a PC. The owner says that the force sent his iPod flying to the ground, where it started smoking and sparking until it was unplugged. Unfortunately, the iPod was out of warranty, so the owner wasn't able to get an immediate replacement. I've had my iPod Nano for a long time now and never has it heated up, so we have to take this one with a grain of salt, but you can never be too wary when charging your gadgets.

Hands-On Mobile recently inked a deal with Activision to bring Guitar Hero to the cell phone, aka "mobile devices."
Besides going on and on about how much money the franchise made, there's really not a whole lot of information in the press release. Here check for yourself:
SAN FRANCISCO, April 2, 2007 - Hands-On Mobile, Inc., the world's leading developer of connected games and applications, today announced an agreement with Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), to bring the wildly popular Guitar Heroâ„¢ franchise to mobile devices.
"Guitar Hero is an epic game experience that has mushroomed into a cultural phenomenon," said Erik Pavelka, Vice President of Business Development, Hands-On Mobile. "We are thrilled to bring this award-winning franchise to mobile and to continue our successful relationship with Activision."
"The lifestyle of music is strongly immersed into our everyday culture, and having Guitar Hero on mobile platforms will now allow our dedicated fans the opportunity to passionately feel the music, anytime and anywhere," said Dusty Welch, head of publishing at RedOctane. "Hands-On Mobile has extensive experience and success in bringing established franchises to mobile devices, and we greatly look forward to extending the Guitar Hero brand to mobile users."
Since its launch in 2005, Guitar Hero quickly became one of the most popular console games, with Guitar Hero IIâ„¢ topping the charts as the best-selling console and handheld game in dollars for the U.S. for the month of December, according to The NPD Group.
With Guitar Hero, Hands-On Mobile expands its current crop of top-selling mobile games and applications. These include the Activision franchise Call of Duty®, as well as other top brands.
I've emailed the company to beg for some details, any details, about the upcoming mobile game. Could be kinda cool if it's pulled off correctly. Could be...
