Here's another bit of Apple speculation to get your weekend started right -- our favorite fruit company appears to be working on a way to let you sample music while out and about. But Apple's patent lawyers explain it in much more eloquent terms than we ever could: "Techniques for facilitating purchase of media items, such as digital media assets, are disclosed. A computing device, e.g., a portable media device, can save media indicia pertaining to one or media items of interest to a user. The media indicia can thereafter be use to purchase the one or more media items or other products associated therewith." From our reading of the patent filing (we're not lawyers, mind you), that means Apple is possibly working on a way to let you taste music "by tuning into a wireless signal" (e.g. terrestrial radio, digital radio, or satrad). You'd then be able to tag the songs you want to buy, and when you get back to your computer and fire up iTunes (or, "electronic commerce environment"), you could download that new Decemberists track that you fell in love with while your car was stuck in traffic. Now of course, this doesn't quite go as far as the MusicGremlin MG-100, which lets you download whole songs directly from WiFi hotspots, but this could be a good intermediate step.

Car-lovin' sister site Jalopnik sends an update on the Gizmondo craziness. Former company honcho and Swedish gangster Fat Stefan Eriksson has rejected his plea deal. If Eriksson, whose real first name is "Bo," had accepted this deal and pleaded "no contest" to four counts, he would've been hit with a two year, four month sentence and a US $25,000 fine. There's more, including admitting previous felony conduct.
But, "Bo" said "no."
Now, the mafioso businessman is looking down an 11 year sentence for two counts of theft, two counts of embezzlement and two counts of driving under the influence.

Apple today apologised for selling a "small number" of video iPods infected with the RavMone.exe virus. Pox-ridden ipods accounted for less than one per cent of the video iPods hitting the streets after September 12.
The company says it has seen "less than 25 reports" concerning this problem. Well, we've had one from Reg reader Richard, who by Apple's calculation represents slightly more at four per cent of victims. He bought his 30gig vPod from Argos, the UK mass market retailer, on 7 October.
Then there is 'dctrjons', another four per center, who shared his RavMone.exe problems with Apple's own forums on 22 September.
JUST bought a 30Gig video Ipod. I connected it, downloaded the Itunes software and then sync'd my music and Podcasts. After which I changed the settings to use the Ipod as a drive. Instructed I would have to manually eject the drive.
Well I told ITunes to do so - "Cannot drive is still in use" Closed ITunes and tried to eject it from Windows explorer and was given the same error. Closed all programs, taskbar, disconnected from the internet, still no luck.
Finally opened task manager and being very familiar with all processes that are legal on my machine I found 3 RavMonE.exe's running. Googled it and I have found several references but 99% of them are in foreign language and many relate to IPods...but did not bother to translate myself.
So my question is, anyone else JUST get an Ipod and see encounter this. I see someone else stating there computer was locked up...I noticed severe slowdown when I went through trouble-shooting. I forcibly closed the RavMonE.exe processes and my IPod started working fine.
Of course, as Apple notes, only Windows PCs are affected by RavMone - so Apple computer owners will neither know nor care if their iPods are infected. Apple also aims at boot at the unnamed contract manufacturer which supplied the dodgy iPods.
But let's face it, the company has messed up a little and has to show some contrition, not an act that comes naturally to this secretive, paranoid company. Here's its mea culpa: "As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it."

An "extremely well-informed exec" tells Trusted Reviews that the 6G iPod will be released in December, and it will be capable of 480p resolution. The source confirmed that it will be a touchscreen model with virtual click wheel control, but made no mention of whether wireless connectivity would be part of the package. Added the source, "This is why Jobs isn't afraid of the Zune."
We've seen the iPod touchscreen patent documentation, and we've entertained countless rumors and even reliable tips about the upcoming device; what we need to see now is a real picture of it. One thing's for sure, if this widescreen iPod is released in the next two months, the Microsoft Zune with its old-fashioned 4x3 screen and crippled WiFi will be slam-dunked.

fangorn posted this news:
I've just released version 1.1 of ZodMAME (the Zodiac version of MAME optimised for the ATI 2D accelerator chip). This is the final version of ZodMAME as it is no longer being developed. I've had this version hanging around for a while with many major changes but never got around (forgot) to releasing it.
Here are the major changes:
* Added Cyclone 68000 ASM core to all modules. Substantial speed up for many 68k games. Some that worked before may crash now though.
* Implemented underclocking of MAME CPUs and sound CPUs. Big speedup for many games.
* Samples, such as StarTrek, now load using Storage Memory, i.e. less out of memory errors.
* Graphics optimisations to Capcom CPS1 drawing, some big speed ups.
* 16bit hack to handle 16bit games, thanks Vilmos!
* Vector games memory usage substantially reduced, no more out of memory errors, also the startup time has been reduced.
* Various graphical fixes to many games.
* Added favourites support to launcher
* Added Help to launcher
* Fixes to launcher ROM filtering

If you've heard rumors of a red iPod and just started drooling uncontrollably out of sheer lust, then you can start turning all that pent up emotion into kinetic energy and make a dash for your favorite Apple store. Yes people, the red Nano is a reality.
Looking as red as a cherry and retaining its trademark sleekness, the Special Edition 4GB iPod Nano RED has everything you love about the Nano: it's lightweight, has a 1.5-inch color display, battery life for up to 24 hours, and it only costs $199. Also, $10 from every one of these babies sold goes directly to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. A very good deal for a very good cause.

When will they ever learn that crime doesn't pay - not even for these robbers who managed to steal 39 iPods and several PS2 games in 15 second?
The amazing criminal act committed at a Target store in Utah baffled law enforcers with its world-record speed but was caught on tape by the store's surveillance cam. The incriminating video footage showed one of the suspects stuffing 39 iPods down his over-sized pair of pants before walking out of the store undetected.
Target's security department immediately sent out pictures of the three suspects, all from New York, to other stores including their Centerville branch where the suspects happened to be on the brink of another iPod heist. Unfortunately for the robbers, the iPod case at Centerfield proved to be too much of a challenge and the suspects were able to flee before the police arrived. But not before the store's security wrote down their license plate.
When the long arm of the law finally caught up with them, the trunk of their getaway car contained a bag full of iPods (worth about US$ 7,000) and PS2 games (about a few hundred dollars) and the oversized pair of pants (available free wherever reformed fashion victims throw out their out-of-fad clothes).
Had the police not caught up with the robbers, the group had plans of raiding every Target store in Utah, Nevada and possibly Arizona.

VGBA by Marat Fayzullin is a GameBoy Advance emulator for S60 3rd Edition phones. This first beta version of the S60 port is slow and lacks sound support, optimized versions will come later.
VGBA will run Nintendo GameBoy Advance cartridges from .gba and .gba.gz files. Place your files into E:\Others\VGBA, but please, make sure you own the actual games. This VGBA port is very slow and lacks sound, so I release it more as a demo, with intent to release the optimized version later. Control keys:
[SOFT1] and [SOFT2] act as A and B fire buttons.
[1], [4] act as LEFT shoulder button.
[3], [6] act as RIGHT shoulder button. [*] works as SELECT.
[#] works as START.
QWERTY keyboard acts as fire buttons, just like in other VGBA ports.
[&larr], [C] toggle sound playback.

When it comes to Apple's product roadmap, to say there's an enormous amount of buzz and milling of rumors is a ridiculous understatement. Believe it or not we tend to have to disregard the majority of rumors floating around (or that get sent in to us); that said, when not only one, but multiple trusted sources get in touch to let us know Steve Jobs & Co. are supposedly finally about completed with the wireless / video iPod, we have to take note. Supposedly they're preparing to announce the device in the very near future, which we've been told is both wireless and widescreen (both features we've been waiting for the iPod to take on, since, well, forever) -- you didn't think last month's new nano / new shuffle / iTV event was going to be it for the rest of the year, did you? We'll keep you posted.

In a concerted effort to promote mobile phone gaming, 02 is to install five free mobile game demos from developer Fishlabs on new Nokia and Sony Ericsson mobiles.
The handsets will come with an application allowing users to sample 3D titles Planet Riders, Galaxy on Fire, Burning Tires, Robot Alliance and Heli Strike.
"Many mobile phone owners are not aware of the fact that they are holding a mobile game console," said Mark Tins, product manager of games at O2.
"These pre-installed games introduce users to the concept of mobile gaming enabling them to simply download the full versions if they want to."
Initially the demos will be available for the Nokia 6233 and Sony Ericsson K610i and K800i models.

Griffin Centerstage is an iPod case that doubles as a stand, giving you hands-free viewing by simply flipping open the anodized aluminum cover. It's available in four colors, along with a clear hardshell polycarbonate material that still lets you operate the iPod's click wheel. Available in time for the holidays, it'll be $25.
Finally, an iPod case that does more than just sit there protecting that precious bauble. My friend who regularly uses one of those cheap airline cups to hold his iPod in place while watching movies in flight will love this thing. Bravo.
