News/Release by Critical :
Hi,
Yesterday I joined the RACE! team on SourceForge to provide Gizmondo support for their RACE! NeoGeo Pocket (and Color) emulator, which was previously released for the GP2X and GP32. This is my first release of the source I've added to that.
GizRACE 0.1.0
---------------
Gizmondo port by critical of RACE!, originally written by Judge, ported to GP2x and GP32 by Flavor and Thor, who both also enhanced it.
Full credits are in the readme.txt that sits alongside this file.
It emulates Neo Geo Pocket (NGP) and Neo Geo Pocket Color (NGPC) handhelds.
The gx.dll in this distribution is the same one provided by thereaper, which
is based on Thierry Tremblay's GAPI emulator.
The sdl libraries are courtesy of sweetlilmre.
The zlib library is from Jean-Loup Gailly and Mark Adler.
This software is licensed under the GNU Generic Public License(GPL).
Source is available on request to the contact address below, or from sourceforge
at:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/koyote-land
Contact: criticalhippo@gmail.com
Installation
------------
Put GizRACE.exe in the root of your SD card, along with the included gx.dll,
SDL.dll, SDL_image.dll, SDL_mixer.dll and zlib.dll.
Put the other files in a directory called "GizRACE" in the root of your SD card.
Usage
-----
ROMs must be in a directory called:
GizRACE
in the root of your SD Card. They must have the suffix ".ngp" or ".npc".
The filenames MAY NOT CONTAIN SPACES.
Buttons
-------
The joypad does what you'd expect. The other buttons are:
PLAY A
FFWD B
STOP Start
HOME Quit
Whilst in the file selector, the STOP key exits back to the Gizmondo system.
Up and Down on the joypad in the main menu select the ROM, PLAY starts it.
TODO
----
Scaling.
Proper menu.
Better controls.
Allow spaces in filenames.

Yep, it's the 30GB iPod (with video) as we all know and love or loathe it, but now it's back U2 Special Edition with that signature red click-wheel (unlike the "traditional" all black model). Just in case the gimmick's worn off now that the pent up demand for black iPods have been met, though, and it also has a metal posterior, and comes with a special iTunes Music Store coupon redeemable for a 30-minute video of music videos and band interviews. So let's review: red click-wheel, black metal back, "free" 30 minute U2 video -- you pay $30 more than the regular 30GB iPod ($329 as opposed to $299). What a steal. Ahem.

News via real Tech News
The biggest beach or poolside risk before the iPod and other high cost electronics came along was a thief getting your beer or maybe nabbing your wallet. Unfortunately, the old hide-it-in-the-shoe method is not very effective, and with sand and sun involved, also not very practical in safeguarding delicate electronics. Enter the Yelpie - a bright yellow battery-operated electronic safe that shrieks when you tug on it.
So, what is Yelpie? It is a patented, high density plastic device that is battery powered, lightweight and portable. To operate you simply open up Yelpie, stash your gear, and arm it with a four digit Personal Identification Number (PIN). Any attempt to move the device will result in a 90 decibel alarm sounding which will attract a lot of attention. Yelpie’s clever design means that an accidental bump will not set it off. It needs repeated movements over less than a second to go into alarm. Once in alarm, it can be silenced (and unlocked) by entering your PIN. If the movement stops, for example, after the thieves have dropped Yelpie, the alarm will shut down within 30 seconds. Once the alarm has ceased, Yelpie is once more watching out for your valuables.
The Yelpie also offers a weatherproof storage place to keep sand and rain out of your expensive electronic devices.
An extra feature of Yelpie is that the shoulder strap can be threaded through handbags and other items and pulled tight. It would then be almost impossible to get the bag off without setting of the alarm..

Criitical Posted this news/release:
Hi,
Following the recent release of sweetlilmre's SDL port for the Gizmondo, I thought I'd have a quick go at using it to port the GP2X port of chui's uae4all to the Gizmondo. It works, to a large extent (except for sound, and sundy other issues that are noted in the documentation).
I've attached release 1 of the port to this post, and will update it as I sort out the issues that still exist.
Please read the README_GIZMONDO.txt file before asking questions - if I've already provided an adequate answer in that text file I will be VERY annoyed that you didn't bother to read it before asking a question. I don't write instructions for fun.

Microsoft reps have denied recent rumors alleging that it has partnered with a number of Japanese consumer electronics companies to develop a device to compete in Japan with Apple's iPod.
Several reports are currently making the rounds, reporting that Microsoft has collaborated with eight other companies to create a new product to compete with Apple.
"The announcement that came out of Japan this week was simply about the Japanese launch of Windows Media Player 11," said a Microsoft representative who asked not to be named. "Due to translation issues the announcement was misconstrued to sound like Microsoft was developing a rival to the iPod; that's just not the case."
According to Microsoft, the press release (which is in Japanese) actually states that Microsoft announced availability for its new WMP 11 in the Japanese market. The companies listed in the release are companies that Microsoft has partnered with in Japan to ensure a good user experience. These companies have all agreed to support Windows Digital Rights Management 10 for portable devices.
"The companies listed in the Japanese release are device partners," the representative said. "For example, in the U.S. one of our device partners is iRiver. We've partnered closely with them to ensure that their Clix [media player] device runs WMP 11 technology."
The release lists both device partners and service partners. Device partners include iRiver Japan, NTT DoCoMo, CreativeMedia, Toshiba, and Victor JVC. Service partners include The Language Channel, a subscription-based e-learning service; OCN Music Store, which is used for Portable Media Center (PMC)-optimized video downloads; and Napster Japan. Napster Japan service is slated to become available in the fall of 2006.
"The announcement was written about the WMP 11 launch in Japan," said Microsoft representative Sally Julien. "The companies listed are partners who will use the technology in their products, just as they have done with WMP 10."
Both sources at Microsoft refused to comment when asked whether the company has plans to launch its own MP3 player. In addition, Microsoft refused to confirm recent rumors regarding a portable gaming device dubbed "xplayer."
"We don't comment on speculation," Julien said. "There are a ton of rumors out there right now but we have nothing to announce at this time."
Microsoft has already unveiled its WMP 11 technology in the states. The player comes integrated with MTV's URGE digital music service. Similar to existing music download services, URGE also offers music blogs, feeds, editorial content, radio, and MTV/VH1/CMT channel hubs. URGE incorporates MusicNet's 2 million-track music library.
Microsoft reps say U.S. consumers can expect to see verified MEDIA devices rolling out to retail stores in the coming months. These devices will be interoperable with WMP 11 and URGE.

Hi guys, as I promised more than one year ago here is Cybersaurus, a new game for the Zodiac. You can find screenshots and a working demo at http://www.darxun.com/cbs.htm.
P.S.:
The game is made for newer PalmOS devices with 400 Mhz processors, but if you tweak the options it can run on the Zodiac at 480x320 as well. Deactivate the background in the options and reduce the view depth in order to get a decent frame reate.

UK high street retailer HMV has announced the launch of its latest initiative for delivering games, music and movies to customers - with the Txt2Buy system set to allow customers to order products from their mobile phones.
The service, which has been launched by the retail giant in cooperation with mobile CRM technology provider Digital Rum, means that customers will be able to buy products simply by texting in shortcodes found in HMV's advertising.
After texting in their shortcode, users will receive a reply with a mobile Internet link that will allow them to securely pay for purchases on credit cards. Customers will also be able to store their credit card details to avoid re-entering them.\
"By combining SMS ordering with secure credit/debit card payment via the mobile internet, HMV is able to extend the order and payment capability of its high value product portfolio across any promotional medium - print, radio and television - simply by adding an SMS short code," Digital Rum's VP of sales, Russell Tarr, told financial technology publication Finextra.
The move makes HMV into one of the first companies to leverage the mobile phone platform as a way of selling boxed games in the UK. The retailer has previously stated that it hopes to target a significantly larger share of the UK games market; although it is a market leader in music and movies, in the games sector HMV is dwarfed by specialist rival GAME.

One of the videogames industry's most persistent pieces of vapourware, the Phantom Game Service, is still "moving forward in development," according to the company responsible for the as-yet unseen product, Infinium Labs.
In a trading statement released yesterday, Infinium claimed that the service - described as "the first end-to-end, on-demand game service for delivery to the living room" - is being licensed to PC manufacturers at present.
However, the reassurance came even as it emerged that the often-controversial company, which has been accused of existing purely in an attempt to reap investment cash and has been investigated by the SEC over irregularities regarding the promotion of its shares, is being sued by former boss Kevin Bachus over alleged unpaid wages.
Infinium first touted the idea of the Phantom Game Service - and the Phantom console which would act as the head-end in the living room - over three years ago, and has charged headlong through ever release date it has set itself since then.
This time around, the firm is taking no chances - and the trading update gives no indication whatsoever of when the service might actually launch.
Not that this stops Infinium from missing deadlines; the company also revealed in the same update that its plan to release the Phantom Lapboard, a combination keyboard and mouse device which was originally envisaged as the controller for the Phantom, has seen the launch date slip from "mid-2006" to October.
The firm's new president and CEO, Greg Koler, remained upbeat in the statement. "We are on a fast pace crossing over the threshold of manufacturing and marketing our first product, the Phantom Lapboard," he commented. "Everything is on schedule for first arrivals of the Phantom Lapboard this October in the US market."
However, with the firm's losses now running at almost $70 million since its inception and not a single product on shelves or revenue-generating deal in the bag, it remains to be seen how much more patience the investment community will afford to Infinium - especially in the wake of the high-profile collapse of another industry albatross, Gizmondo.

Another hack in the grand tradition of Altoids tin usage, the Minty Boost hack from from Ladyada is a new external iPod battery pack that uses AA batteries and some design smarts to about double the battery life of your iPod. The last time we saw an Altoids-based charger for the iPod it was running off of some 9v batteries, making the hack a simple one, but not very efficient. By using cheap and available AAs, the Minty Boost should make quite the addition to your collection of iPod accessories -- as long as you can manage to follow along at home with Ladyada's detailed instructions. Luckily, she's quite thorough, and even has a kit available to make things even easier. Plus a little bit of fresh breath never hurt anybody.

In February, former Gizmondo executive Stefan Eriksson made headlines for being involved in a million-dollar car crash. Eriksson was arrested last month, and the Associated Press reports that today he entered a plea of not guilty to a number of the charges currently against him. For those keeping track, the charges now include three counts of embezzlement, three counts of grand theft, illegal gun possession, and two misdemeanor counts of drunken driving. According to the AP, Eriksson pleaded guilty to grand theft, embezzlement, and drunken driving charges, though it did not say how many of each, or what his plea was on the gun charge.
The embezzlement and theft charges stem from a trio of exotic cars (including the $1 million Ferrari Enzo that was wrecked in the car crash) Eriksson had allegedly leased in Great Britain and then illegally transported to the US. The gun charge apparently stems from a .357-caliber handgun authorities found during a search of Eriksson's Bel Air, California home. The gun was reportedly registered to a reserve Orange County Sheriff's deputy.
As for the drunken driving charges, Eriksson tested above the legal limit of alcohol after the crash. He originally claimed that a German man named Dietrich was driving and fled the scene after the accident, but has since reportedly admitted that he was at the wheel.
Eriksson isn't the only former Gizmondo executive in trouble with the law. Late last month, former managing director of the company Carl Freer was arrested on suspicion of impersonating a police officer in order to buy a gun. Freer allegedly flashed a badge he got from the San Gabriel Valley Transit Authority, claiming to be a police officer and a member of an "antiterrorism" squad. The SGVTA is a private company that assists the elderly by providing transportation. Both Freer and Eriksson left Gizmondo last October when it was reported that Eriksson and a pair of other Gizmondo employees had ties to Swedish organized crime.

Myth or not, the story that muggers are specifically targeting folks with iPods has gotten a fair amount of press since it was first reported, and has convinced at least one police department to make a rather half-hearted attempt at returning peace of mind to the city's subway commuters. For the past three months, New York City cops have been offering iPod and other portable device owners a way to "register" their gear -- wherein the officers mark your hardware with invisible ink and copy down the serial number -- in order to provide victims with a slim but tangible chance of recovery. The two-pronged approach ensures that even if thieves figure out a way to wash off the ink. which is only visible under infrared lighting, they may not be wise enough to file off the serial numbers as well. So far, over 2,000 gadgets have been marked at Transit Bureau offices and tables located around the subway system, although the program has yet to help any victims recover their stolen goods, so it's probably not a bad idea to continue sporting your Thomas Pink tie.

Nokia has released the source code of it's S60 WebKit browser for mobile devices. Based on the HTML rendering components used in Konqueror and Safari, the S60 WebKit has a multitude of advanced features designed specifically for web navigation on devices with small screens. Nokia decided to release the source code under the permissive BSD license in order to promote adoption by other mobile device companies. From the article: 'the power and scalability of WebKit-based browsers and the highly permissive license under which the S60 WebKit source code is available make it a good choice for companies that want to add mobile web browsing to their devices. I think it will be particularly interesting to see how this affects Opera, whose revenue primarily comes from distribution of its own virtually ubiquitous embedded browser.

If the Hi-Fi was a little late-century minimalist for you, peep Speck's new SpeckTone, the only iPod dock with real-simulated 1950s design stylings to get your be-bop on, dig? It's not only old school on the outside; the $150 SpeckTone has analogue innards for a "richer" sound (somehow we have a feeling there ain't no tubes in there), a 4-inch sub and 28 watt speakers, as well as a green backlit volume knob to offset the glossy lacquered wood cabinet. It really was a different time, wasn't it?
