The people spoke, and Apple listened -- while they still have their hearing that is. After facing that French iPod law (no, not that one, the other one regulating volume output in portable audio devices) and a lawsuit here in the states about iPod-related hearing damage, Apple's apparently releasing a software update to allow for a personal volume threshold option in your iPod. Meaning you can set it so your iPod can't get any louder than a certain pre-defined level -- though as long as that level is configurable, even if its placed out of the way in the device options, people will still continue to set it to 11 and damage their hearing. Still, what's interesting here is that this move could be construed as an admission of guilt in some sense, but hey, we appreciate the thought, Apple. Look at that guy in the picture -- we wouldn't really want him screaming at full volume right into our ears, either.

March 22nd, 2006, 18:00 Posted By: wraggster
Speaking at GDC, David Collier, CEO of Tokyo-based mobile content provider Pikkie, has argued that developers must remember the mobile phone is first and foremost a communications device.
According to Collier, developers must make use of that functionality in order to secure and maintain interest from mobile carriers, something which he sees as key since "We live in a carrier's world."
Together with Matthew Bellows of Floodgate Entertainment, Collier took the stage at GDC to deliver a presentation on the need for mobile game developers to be more creative.
To demonstrate what can be achieved with innovation in gameplay and a closer working relationship with carriers, the pair showcased Korea-based developer Gamevil's Path of a Warrior. It's the only mobile game to have secured a unique fixed fee with Korean mobile carriers, at USD 10 per month for unlimited play. "I'm sure the American operators are dying to emulate that and help us all make a great business," Collier joked.
Bellows and Collier also heralded EA's Need for Speed as a major step forward for big publishers, in that it takes full advantage of the mobile platform by offering connected multiplayer gaming and downloads - as opposed to a relatively basic single player port of a hit console game.
Taito's Puzzle Bobble was highlighted to demonstrate the idea of real-time connected gaming, and Floodgate's Pet Shop - which enables gamers to enter virtual 'best of show' events with other players in their real-world local or national area - was shown as an example of location based services.
"The mobile phone isn't just a small Game Boy," stated Collier. "It's about connectivity."

By a margin of almost 100 votes, France's National Assembly has approved a bill that could force Apple and other companies to open the DRM used by their online music stores to other companies. At issue isn't DRM itself but interoperability. The law, if passed by France's Senate later this year, could require Apple to open its FairPlay DRM system to music players other than the iPod. If Apple refused, the law would allow consumers to use software to transcode the music into other formats, stripping the DRM in the process. The law would also apply to other DRM, such as Microsoft's PlaysForSure, but Apple has the most to lose, both because of its large share of the market, and because of its "razor-and-blades" business model, which closely ties the iPod to the iTunes Music Store. Apple has thus far refused to comment on the bill.

Over the next couple months Apple may be phasing out the 60GB iPod video in favor of something else, hopefully the true iPod Video that we have been hearing about non-stop for the past month, according to an Apple analyst. Apple told distributors that the 60GB iPod will be āat riskā until the end of April. At risk basically means that it could be discontinued at any moment. Letās hope this possible discontinuation will preclude the new video iPod that may or may not appear some time soon.

Community gaming and Smartphone technology said to be key
In his GDC keynote speech, Nokia's director of games publishing, Greg Sauter, has outlined the company's commitment to the future of mobile gaming and stressed the importance of enhancing the end-user's wireless experience.
Sauter's speech focused on the emerging Smartphone market, which Nokia believes will be the primary vehicle for the evolution of the wireless gaming experience. The company hopes to have an installed base of 250 million for its own smartphone range by 2008.
But technology is only part of the solution according to Sauter, and the wireless gaming market needs a pretty serious overhaul if its growth is to be maintained and improved over the coming years.
The company has revealed a number of new additions to its developer support system, including an enhanced and updated software development kit (SDK), improved developer tools and support on the revamped developer community site, Forum Nokia PRO, and access to community and connected gaming functionality through SNAP Mobile.
Nokia believes that the end user experience has so far failed to evolve in sync with the rapidly advancing technology platform, and has developed a next-generation consumer interface to enable fast and easy access to discover, purchase, play, manage and share mobile games and content.
"With our new consumer interface, you get quick access to new games and information, it's easy to buy and manage your games, and share game accomplishments with your friends. You can play fantastic looking games for a great overall entertainment experience in your pocket. This new consumer interface is going to transform the way people find and play mobile games," Sauter commented.
The company's N-Gage platform is also very much alive as far as Nokia is concerned, and whilst the handset technology may have changed to encompass a wider selection of devices than the standard N-Gage game deck, the concept of wireless connected gaming and an online community built through the N-Gage arena website remains a key strategy for the firm. Potentially mirroring the Xbox Live experience, Nokia plans to include gamer profiles, avatars and a new N-Gage gaming points system in the near future - all of which is designed to enhance the consumer experience in the wireless gaming market.

If, for whatever reason, you really donāt like having to use iTunes to rip and transfer songs to your iPod, Taiwan-based Zettabyte may just have what youāre looking for: the iUpload connects directly to the iPod (or any other MP3 player) and transfers music in MP3 format via USB that the unit rips from CDs. Also of note is that it automatically fetches your songsā metadata tags from the Internet, making the whole song transferring process a little more pleasant. While it might not win any sexiest gadget award, the iUpload is due to arrive sometime this year, price still TBA.

The Neuros MPEG4 Recorder 2 is a Digital VCR for your Sony PSP(tm) and iPod(tm) video! The ultimate solution for all multimedia geeks.

Just pop a CF or memory stick memory card (purchased separately) into the Recorder 2 and plug it into the video-out jacks of any video source (cable or Satellite TV box, DVR, PVR like Tivoā¢, VCR, DVD player, camcorder, etc) with the supplied cables and hit āRecord.ā Once the recording is finished, you can instantly view the recorded video on a PSPTM , your laptop or other handheld that accepts CF or memory stick by popping the memory card out of the Recorder 2, popping it into the player, and hitting āPlayā.
Itās easy to watch on an iPod too: Just transfer the recorded file to your PC via a USB card reader (purchased separately) and add it to iTunes, then sync your iPod, and you are ready to go. Nothing to download or convert.

PicodriveN is another port of PicoDrive, Dave's Megadrive / Genesis emulator for Pocket PC. This version is based on PicoDrive 0.030 and is made for Symbian UIQ2 devices. It also has full sound support added (starting from version 0.70). It is alternative version to another port by AnotherGuest / Someone and is not based on it (so it has a little different name).
Features
Modified Cyclone 68000 core with better compatibility.
SRAM support.
Save state support.
Zipped ROM support.
Ability to auto-pause game on phone call (and resume it later).
Selectable frameskip.
Configurable keys and touchpad.
Flip-closed mode for SE phones.
Full sound support.
Problems / limitations
Some games don't run or have various glitches due to inaccurate emulation
Configuration
Check readme for detailed description. If you have trouble configuring keys, see this tutorial.
Quick notes
Enabling Z80 in sound settings will improve compatibility (you don't have to enable anything else, only Z80), because some games need it to run. But it slows emulation down, so turn it off if the game doesn't need it and you don't want sound.
Sound related:
You must use auto frameskip or you will get stuttering sound.
Sound needs a lot of CPU power, so it is best to use "fit 0" or "fit 180" display modes and to exit all other apps.
If you change sound settings AFTER loading a ROM, you may need to reset game to get sound (this depends on a ROM itself).
Changelog
0.70
Started using tools from "Symbian GCC Improvement Project", which give considerable speed increase (~4fps in "center 90" mode).
Rewrote some drawing routines in ARM assembly (gives ~6 more fps in "center 90" mode).
Minor improvement to 0 and 180 "fit" modes. Now they look slightly better and are faster.
Added some background for OSD text for better readability.
Added Pal/NTSC detection. This is needed for proper sound.
Implemented Reesy's DrZ80 Z80 emu. Made some changes to it with hope to make it faster.
Implemented ym2612 emu from the MAME project. Runs well but sometimes sounds a bit weird. Could be a little faster, so made some changes too.
Implemented SN76489 emu from the MAME project.
Added two separate sound output methods (mediaserver and cmaudiofb) with autodetection (needs testing).
Fixed VDP DMA fill emulation (as described in Charles MacDonald's docs), fixes Contra and some other games.
0.301
Launcher:
Launcher now starts emulation process from current directory, not from hardcoded paths.
Improved 'pause on call' feature, should hopefully work with Motorola phones.
0.30
Initial release.

Snes9x UIQ is a port of well known Super Nintendo Entertainment System / Super Famicom emulator with the same name. It is actually based on OpenSnes9xGP, modified Snes9x for GP32 handheld, which had parts of it adapted to / totally rewritten for GP32 (in C or ASM). As GP32 is ARM CPU based device (same as UIQ2 phones), these optimizations were used in this port.
Features
Zipped ROM support.
SRAM support.
Save state support.
Ability to auto-pause game on phone call (and resume it later).
Selectable frameskip.
Configurable keys and touchpad.
Flip-closed mode for SE phones.
Full sound support (very slow and barely useable).
Problems / limitations
Due to various optimizations emulation accuracy was lost and most games have various graphical glitches, some are unplayable at all.
Some SNES PPU (pucture processing unit) effects cause major slowdowns.
Enabling sound slows the emulation way too much (it was added only because it was already there in Snes9x, and was easy to port).
SuperFX games eather crash or are totally unplayable (< 1fps).
Configuration
It is mainly the same as in PicodriveN, check readme for detailed description. If you have trouble configuring keys, see PicodriveN key tutorial.
Quick notes
sound emulation is very slow, it is not recommended to use it.
If you change sound settings AFTER loading a ROM, you may need to reset game to get sound (this depends on a ROM itself).
zipped ROMs: zip files must contain one ROM per file, ROM must be in .smc format.

Been trying to follow the Gizmondo Ferrari story but can't seem to keep the facts straight? Well we don't personally see how a simple little story about an illegally imported excusive Italian sportscar, a video game exec for handheld has been Gizmondo, the Swedish Uppsala mafia, Homeland Security, a mysterious ammunition clip, the Royal Bank of Scotland, and a transportation service for old people run out of an auto repair shop is the least bit confusing at all, but some of you apparently required some visual aids.
Enter Game Revolution's fun-for-all-ages flow chart, the piece de resistance of their extensive Gizmondo coverage aptly called "Gizmondo Bizarro." It's only a matter of time before they turn this into a made-for-TV movie featuring Eric Roberts as Stefan Ericksson in what will be heralded as "a gripping performance." They'll call it Crash and Burn: The Real Life Story of the Gizmondo Saga.

Former Gizmondo exec claims links with anti-terrorism unit
The mystery surrounding former Gizmondo executive Stefan Eriksson and his crashed Ferrari has deepened following revelations that two men claiming to be "homeland security" appeared at the scene of the accident.
Eriksson claims he was not driving when his USD 1 million Enzo Ferrari crashed on a Californian highway last month, and police have yet to locate 'Dietrich', the man identified by Eriksson as the driver.
According to the LA Times, police are also attempting to ascertain the whereabouts of two men who arrived shortly after emergency crews reached the scene and flashed cards which said they were from homeland security. They were allowed to talk to Eriksson before leaving the scene. Police are now asking the public for help with identifying the two men.
It's also been revealed that Eriksson flashed a card of his own which declared that he was "deputy commissioner" of the San Gabriel Valley Transit Authority police's anti-terrorism unit. The SGVTA is a small non-profit organisation which provides transportation for people with disabilities in the California area.
SGVTA commissioner Yosef Maiwandi told the LA Times that he founded the organisation's police department so that he could seek funding for security and perform background checks on potential members.
Maiwandi said that he was introduced to Eriksson by Ashley Posner, who is also a member of the transit board. Posner is Eriksson's civil attorney.
According to Maiwandi, Eriksson offered to install free surveillance cameras and facial scanning technology on SGVTA buses, claiming that he had provided a similar system for transport agencies in England.
Maiwandi carried out a background check on Eriksson, but did not find cause for concern and accepted the offer. In return, Eriksson was given the title of deputy commissioner and a set of business cards. Maiwandi said that the two men claiming to be from homeland security were nothing to do with the SGVTA.
Californian law allows transport agencies to establish police departments, although officers are not allowed to arrest anyone without undergoing training and meeting legal requirements for hiring staff. Most of these departments are certified by the State's Police Officer Standards Commission - but the SGVTA is not. As a result, its officers' powers extend to carrying weapons and making citizen's arrests.
The LA County Sheriff's Department is still looking into the case. Eriksson is said to have given a sample of blood for testing, but refused a recent interview with police.
