Motorola has posted information on a new product called the Music Duo.
The Music Duo provides Bluetooth capabilities to the iPod for use with Bluetooth headphones. The Music Duo also provides simultaneous connectivity to your Bluetooth capable phone... passing through a telephone call and pausing the music while you take the call.
This product or similar ones may be what was hinted at by Motorola Car Product Manager in Feb 2005 when he said that "consumers will soon be able to listen to music wirelessly from their iPod through their car speakers." At the time, people assumed that Apple would be incorporating Bluetooth technology into the iPod itself.
Features of the Music Duo listed include:
- Provides seamless connections to both your iPod and compatible Bluetooth-enabled phone
- Music pauses for incoming calls and resumes when calls are complete
- Compatible with Generation 3 or newer iPod players that have a Dock Connector (i.e. iPod, iPod mini, iPod nano)
- Compatible with any brand of Bluetooth 1.1 or 1.2 –enabled phone that supports “headset” and “hands-free” profiles
- Compatible with Bluetooth Stereo Accessories

So I buy a video iPod, figuring it would be a cool toy. (Gotta get those toys.) It arrives and I'm ready to give it a whirl. I pony up my two bucks, download the pilot episode of Desperate Housewives, insert a standard A/V-to-RCA cable into the earphone jack and try to play it back on my TV.
No Luck. Damned Apple.
I'm here to tell you not to worry. You don't have to fork out for an outrageously priced "proprietary" Apple video cable. You don't even have to buy an expensive dock. You can connect your Video iPod directly to a TV, and you can do it with the ordinary camcorder A/V-to-RCA cable you probably already have lying around your house.
You just have to be tricky.
Here's how.
What You'll Need
In order to get your iPod connected properly to your TV, you'll need the following items on hand:
A video-capable iPod. Any color will do.
An iPod-compatible video. Load it onto your iPod through iTunes.
An A/V cable. If you don't already have an eighth-inch-to-RCA cable, you can pick one up on eBay for five or six bucks shipped. Search for "camcorder A/V cable." Remember, you want a three-plug yellow/red/white RCA connection at one end and a three-banded eighth-inch (3.5mm) A/V plug at the other.

Microsoft's chairman Bill Gates, who is already fending off a threat from the fast-growing internet search giant Google, has opened a second front against the iPod with the launch of an alternative music downloading service which will not be compatible with Apple's massively popular player.
With a touch of the showbusiness glamour usually employed by Apple's chief executive, Steve Jobs, Mr Gates invited the pop singer Justin Timberlake on stage at the technology world's annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to showcase Microsoft's new service.
Branded Urge, it will offer two million tracks for purchase. With iPod owners not able to use the service, Microsoft hopes it will boost use of its digital player, the Portable Media Centre, which has been overshadowed by iPod's dominance of the market.
Microsoft is also striking a blow at Apple's downloading service, iTunes. Unlike iTunes, which charges customers a fixed amount per song, Urge will offer a subscription for unlimited downloads.
Created through a partnership with the television network MTV, Urge will also offer MTV music and videos and will be built into Microsoft's next version of its Windows operating system, Vista, which will be available later this year.
The move is the most serious attempt to date by Microsoft, once the technology world's most innovative company, to shake off criticism that it has become staid and has lost ground to nimbler rivals.
In a marked change from previous years, when Microsoft has given dry presentations of innovations aimed at business customers, this year the company used its appearance at the highly attended Consumer Electronics Show to showcase a range of sleek, new consumer products.
As well as the Urge music service, Microsoft wants to make inroads into people's living rooms. It has signed a deal with Rupert Murdoch's BSkyB in the UK and DirecTV in the US to allow customers to get the video on-demand service through a PC with Windows operating system or through its Xbox console.
Microsoft also unveiled more details of Vista, its first upgrade of Windows in five years. Vista has been partly developed to fend off attempts by Google to branch out from internet search into a range of other areas.
Mr Gates was dismissive of Google yesterday, saying: "There are all these rumours Google is going to come out with a robot that cooks pizza. Who knows what the truth is, we'll just have to see."
Google, which was created only seven years ago and is worth $135bn (£79bn), is set to unveil its own set of innovations today. They are expected to include a system to allow customers to download videos, including television shows, via the Google site.

Piper Jaffray research analyst Gene Munster maintained an "outperform" rating and $80 price target on Apple Computer (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) ahead of Macworld 2006 and announced his expectations for the conference, which will be held in San Francisco next week.
On Tuesday morning, Steve Jobs will speak at the Macworld keynote and announce a number of new and upgraded Apple products.
New announcements at the keynote could include a revamped iPod shuffle with a slightly different form factor and a small screen, Munster said.
Evidence of this is the fact that Apple.com indicates that 1gigabyte iPod shuffles are sold out and supply will not be replenished until mid-January. "We believe this is a sign that a new shuffle is coming at Macworld; otherwise Apple would likely have refilled the channel," the analyst noted in research note today.
Munster also believes there is a good chance that we will see "some form" of consumer focused Intel (nasdaq: INTC - news - people ) based Mac at Macworld, likely as an iBook or Mac mini. Apple has indicated that Intel-based Macs will become available in mid-2006.
The research analyst said he "would be surprised" if Apple does not announce new video content offerings to be added to the existing offerings available at iTunes, such as new TV shows and, potentially, feature films.
In addition, Munster believes it is possible that Apple will introduce some form of new consumer electronics device, continuing on the "trend towards being more of an entertainment/media technology company, not just a computer company."

Two MP3 player makers today demonstrated their decision to compete with Apple's iPod Nano by... er... announcing virtually identically styled products. Step forward Samsung and SanDisk, whose YP-Z5 and and Sansa e200 players elicited immediate 'it looks like a Nano' calls from assembled hacks.
Ah well, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em...
Samsung's YP-Z5 is the least Nano-like of the two, but since it comes in shiny silver and black models, in both 2GB and 4GB Flash capacities, it's clear where the company's designers got their inspiration from. It's pretty much the same size as a Nano, too, as is the SanDisk device.
Samsung's pitch for its player as a Nano killer is a claimed battery life of 38 hours, rather more than the 14 hours Apple claims for the Nano. The YP-Z5 also sports a 1.8in colour LCD, in portrait orientation rather than the Nano's 1.5in landscape display.
The Sansa e200 also boasts a 1.8in display, similarly configured. SanDisk's player has 6GB of storage, but it's also available in, yes, 2GB and 4GB forms. SanDisk being a purveyor of memory cards has equipped its player with an SD card slot for additional memory.
Like the YP-Z5, the e200 supports MP3 and WMA audio files, the latter with DRM support. Both will also hold photos and display them in slideshows.
SanDisk claimed a massive 128 hours' playback time for the 6GB player - double that of the 4GB model and four times what the 2GB model offers. So either it's shipping different sized batteries in each model - or it's simply stating that's how long it takes to play all the songs on a full player. Whether the 6GB model's battery will last 128 hours isn't clear at this stage.
SanDisk said its Nano clones will ship in March, in both the US and Europe. Samsung's player will arrive in February, a company official said.

As you all know, we've got kind of a thing for gadgets 'round these parts. Sure, we can be critical and even mocking of certain products, but in the end, a gadget is a gadget is a gadget, right? Well, that's true only if it works. Meet the wireless iPod dock by Adimos, which promises to stream video content from a 5G 'Pod to the display device of your choice. Does it use WiFi? Nah. Does it use Bluetooth? Negative. RF? Nope. IR? Try again. We'll stop right there, because you could name every single wireless standard and still not come up with Adimos' proprietary ADM200 that is required for streaming from your PMP. Does your TV support ADM200? Another big no right there, because only an unnamed European manufacturer has commited to including this tech in their sets. Oh well, it's nice to dream.

January 5th, 2006, 01:15 Posted By: wraggster
The iPod may be the modern-day equivalent of the Red Ryder BB gun _ that all-consuming desire of Ralphie, the little protagonist of "A Christmas Story."
Every kid seemed to want an iPod this Christmas _ and many adults wanted one, too.
But an iPod, while far safer than a BB gun, can be no less problematic for the uninitiated.
"I was one of the last to join the e-mail bandwagon," said Sherri Fitts, of Providence, R.I., a clinical psychologist and confessed Luddite.
On Christmas Day, Fitts tried to set up an iPod Shuffle for her daughter, Emily. The digital music player was a gift from the 10-year-old's grandparents.
"I thought it wouldn't be that hard," Fitts said.
She was wrong.
After hours of trying, Fitts gave up so she'd have time to spend with her parents, who had come to spend the day.
"It's not the same as the (Sony) Walkman, where you just put in a battery and turn it on."
On the day after Christmas, Fitts called in reinforcements _ a computer-savvy friend _ to no avail.
"On Tuesday, I was ready to throw it out the window."
Instead, she got through to Apple's iPod help line and a technician talked her through the start-up process in a few minutes.
Fitts' experience may have been an extreme one, but she certainly wasn't the only person in the last week or so perplexed by the tiny gadgets.
In the week after Christmas, Fitts and other iPod neophytes headed online, to the phone or to a store for help setting up their new digital music players.
"It may be the exact thing that they wanted but they just don't know how to use it," said Matt Dworkin, a member of Best Buy's Geek Squad, the company's technology service team.
Apple has sold more than 28 million iPods since the MP3 players were introduced in 2001. This year, stock-market analysts predicted consumers would snap up from 9 million to 14 million of Apple's digital music players.
"Apple did such a great job marketing it, it's what people ask for when they come in," said Erik Burmeister, a salesman at the Circuit City in Cranston, R.I.
Apple, of Cupertino, Calif., introduced its credit-card-sized Nano in September to replace the iPod Mini, then the best-selling iPod version.
The company forecast that it would sell 5 million Nanos by Jan. 1. The company's head of sales, Tim Cook, told Reuters before Christmas that demand for the Nano was "staggering."
iPods were one of the top-selling electronic items on Amazon.com between Nov. 1 and Christmas, a period when the online retailer sold 108 million items overall.
With millions of iPod Nanos, Shuffles and Videos selling worldwide, Apple Computer Inc.'s Web site had the largest increase in visitors among the major brands in November, according to the latest figures available from consumer researcher Nielsen/NetRatings.
Expecting the demand for help to keep pace with iPod sales, Circuit City designated a sales associate in each of its 617 stores to run "how-to" sessions for customers last week. The company designated a computer station in each store to run iPod demonstrations.
"I expected quite a few (questions) after Christmas," said Eric Dieffenbach, Burmeister's department manager.
A dozen or so people a day came for the sessions during the early part of the week, in addition to customers asking stray questions, Burmeister said. The number dropped as the week wore on.
"Parents come in with their kids just to learn how to use it, too," Burmeister said Friday.
In the sessions, Circuit City employees gave customers a basic overview of how to charge the iPod battery, download music from a computer, and how to set up an iTunes account where they can buy songs.
On Friday, Burmeister helped Perry Caruso and his 14-year-old daughter, Lexi, learn about her new Nano.
Lexi's iPod Mini broke just before Christmas, so Caruso agreed to buy her a Nano to replace it.
"I already know how to put music in it," said the ninth-grader. "I want to learn how to put in pictures."
Dworkin, interviewed by phone from New Jersey, said he'd also been cautioning buyers to take iPods commercials _ which depict people dancing wildly with iPods in hand _ with a grain of salt.
"The iPod, despite the commercials, is not made for active lifestyles," he said. "We get a lot of people who end up killing their hard drives."
Once Fitts, of Providence, got past the initial problems of setting up her daughter's new Shuffle, she talked with Emily about how to care for the music player.
"There's a very real possibility that she might leave it somewhere or drop it," Fitts said.
But, she acknowledged, "I actually think it's a pretty cool thing."

Entertainment giant Disney is expanding its video offerings for the iTunes platform with the addition of content from its ESPN and ABC Sports outlets as the company pushes further into the mobile-media realm.
Kicking off the latest effort are condensed versions of this year's four college BCS bowl football games from ABC Sports. Later this month, ESPN will provide content from its X Games coverage, "SportsCentury" interviews from ESPN Classic, and the amusing "This Is SportsCenter" show.
Also in the works are ESPN Original Entertainment programs including "Knight School," the forthcoming reality program featuring Texas Tech basketball coach Bobby Knight, which will premiere on iTunes.
Reaching into the Disney Library
"Our mission is to serve fans wherever they are by delivering high-quality content across dozens of multimedia platforms, now including the iTunes Music Store and viewing on the iPod," said George Bodenheimer, ESPN and ABC Sports president and co-chairman of Disney Media Networks.
Besides the sports programming, Disney also is making available content from the ABC Television Group, ranging from the "Wildfire" series to the animated shows "Kim Possible" and "The Proud Family," and selections from the ABC Entertainment and Touchstone Television library product including "America's Funniest Home Videos" and the 1970s Saturday morning show "School House Rock."
Classic animated shorts will be offered via iTunes as well, along with free, ad-supported video podcasts from ABC News. The shows that are not offered for free will cost $1.99 each.
News and Entertainment
Apple changed the way TV programs are distributed last year when it launched the video-capable iPod and began selling video content from Disney's ABC subsidiary. Thus far, customers have downloaded some three million videos from the Apple site.
Adding sports is an interesting choice for the iTunes platform, said Forrester Research analyst Ted Schadler, because such programming typically is only viewed in real time . "Disney is moving beyond entertainment to include more news-related content for iTunes, which is something the other networks and studios may try to do as well," he said.
Schadler also pointed out that ESPN has been aggressive in making its content available online and in the mobile space. "They understand the importance of extending the relationship with their viewers beyond the TV screen," he said.
NBC Universal also has an agreement with Apple to provide television shows for the iTunes store, including classic programs as well as more recent offerings like "Law & Order."

Pete Townshend has warned iPod users they may face hearing problems if they don't turn down the volume.
Townshend, guitarist in '60s rock band The Who, said his hearing has been irreversibly damaged by years of using studio headphones and he must now take 36-hour breaks between recording sessions.
"Hearing loss is a terrible thing because it cannot be repaired," he said on his Web site. "If you use an iPod or anything like it, or your child uses one, you MAY be OK. ... But my intuition tells me there is terrible trouble ahead."
The Who were famous for their earsplitting live performances, but Townshend, 60, said his problem was caused by using earphones in the recording studio.
"I have unwittingly helped to invent and refine a type of music that makes its principal components deaf," he said.
Referring to the increasingly popular practice of downloading music from the Internet, Townshend said: "The downside may be that on our computers - for privacy, for respect to family and co-workers, and for convenience - we use earphones at almost every stage of interaction with sound."

Filmmaking catch-all site The Flux has just announced a contest for amateur cinematographers that asks them to squeeze their creativity onto the video iPod's tiny color screen. Although prizes have yet to be determined, winners will be picked in four categories: student film, indie film, family clip, and music video, with the only restriction being that entries must be shorter than 10 minutes. No professional judging here--victors will be chosen by audience votes--which means sucking up the Academy won't do squat for you. Good luck to all who decide to enter, although you'll stand little chance against our super-condensed 10-minute version of Citizen Kane.

Perhaps the terrorism marketing approach now works best when selling a new iPod product. The Pyp Bomb is a unique little amplifier made out of PVC piping and plastic made for either your iPod or guitar. An odd combo, but the Pyp Bomb has bang (pun not intended) for the buck with 18 watts of power. Not too shabby. When something (like an iPod) is plugged into the 3.5mm phono input jack, sound is optimized for clear, crisp audio for music. Plug a guitar into the 1/4” jack though, and you can switch between electric and acoustic channels to rock out Roy Smeck-style. The Pyp Bomb gets days of battery life too via an internal liquid acid battery. It’s available now for $150 but don’t blame us when the ATF wiretaps your phone for buying it.

Still a little peeved that Apple added video the iPod just a few months after you snapped up an earlier model? Yeah, well ATO is introducing a portable dock called the iSee 360i (got enough "i's" in there?) that'll let most 4th generation iPods, the iPod mini, and even the iPod nano go toe-to-toe with those new video-enabled iPods (basically by taking advantage of the earlier iPods' mass storage capabilties to store video files -- Nyko's iPod Movie Player does pretty much the same thing). The 3.6-inch, 320 x 240 pixel LCD of the iSee 360i isn't exactly massively bigger than the 2.5-inch display of the current iPod, but when you're talking about tiny screens for watching video, every inch counts, right? No mention of which codecs are supported, but the iSee 360i does have direct line-in video recording and a battery life of 4 hours, which is double what you'll get with the 30GB iPod. Should start shipping this quarter with a retail price of $249.

So, you're the lucky possessor of a new video IPod.
Just what are you going to use it for? Think about that one for a minute.
You could shell out $1.99 US to watch an old episode of Desperate Housewives on the small screen. And we are talking really SMALL screen here.
Oh, whoops, you're a Canadian and you can't even do that. On this side of the 49th, you're stuck with Pixar animated shorts and music videos from the ITunes store.
Of course, you could load your own videos. But with a max of about two hours of battery life, forget about plugging in Lord of the Rings for that long flight.
Just as nature abhors a vacuum, content providers hate a medium without a message.
Some must have been poised to start offering video podcasts (a.k.a., vodcasts, vidcasts) almost before Apple's Steve Jobs walked off the stage where he unveiled his latest baby last October.
They range from the naughty and scantily clad models at SuicideGirls.com to the somewhat less provocative wit and wisdom of Stephen Harper and his Conservative party, campaigning for your vote this holiday season.
And the good news is plenty are absolutely free, although sometimes it's easy to see why.
Here's a sample of what can be found on the web by those who want to keep the cost of stuffing their new video IPod to a minimum:
Veoh - This San Diego-based startup roared out of the blocks in December bragging that it had 3,000 different videos ready for IPod users. It requires a relatively painless download and enables users to contribute as well as receive. Once the download is finished it launches like any other video player on your computer and lets you search for a variety of content. Everything from old Popeye cartoons and the Three Stooges to viewer videoblogs, with such provocative titles as View From My Office Window (which refused to open, aw shucks). Find it at www.veoh.com.
Everything Canadian - www.todmaffin.com/Canadapodcasts, by the CBC's tech columnist, offers mostly audio but some video podcasts are popping up. Most are of the home-grown variety, but one never knows what will show up in such lists.
Mefeedia - Videoblogs and more videoblogs. If you really want to know what Dave did on his summer vacation, you can find out here. Voyeurism for the really, really bored but, what the heck. Find it at www.mefeedia.com.
Flixpo and Pixpo - Flixpo offers a variety of content like Veoh. Pixpo requires a download much like Veoh that enables users to send and receive blog-type content. Flixpo is particularly good for lovers of funny or unusual TV commercials but it also has a good sprinkling of comics like George Carlin. And Pixpo? Well, there's Dave again. Find both at www.flixpo.com.
Central Park Media - Mostly anime trailers if you're looking for free content, although there are a few full episodes for free downloading. Otherwise they want you to buy. www.centralparkmedia.com.
SuicideGirls - Sort of a web-based version of Playboy for the pierced, SuicideGirls.com isn't exactly G-rated but it doesn't warrant an X either. Now it offers podcasts of some of its models. It suggests you can show them to your mother, but perhaps not, unless mom rode a Harley and has an eagle tattooed on her biceps. But they do prove that goths just gotta have fun too. www.suicidegirls.com.
Still more aggregators - www.podcastingnews.com has both news about podcasts of all kinds and direct links to a wide variety of video podcasts. Newly added to www.podcastdirectory.com is a video podcast section that has a long list of material. Also try www.podcast.net which has a smattering of video material in addition to its standard MP3 offerings. Type video podcasts into its search engine. And www.loomia.com is an excellent beginner's source of information and content. Find still more at www.vodcasts.tv and www.feedburner.com.

The chief designer of Apple Computer Inc.'s phenomenally popular iPod digital music player was named on Friday in the Queen's Honours List.
London-born Jonathan Ive, 38, Apple's senior vice president of design, on Friday was awarded the title of Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth.
The title recognizes Ive's achievements in industrial design as leader of the team that produced not only the iPod but also the iMac, iBook and Powerbook computer lines in his nearly 13-year career at Cupertino, California-based Apple.
Ive studied design and art at Newcastle Polytechnic in England. In 1989, he became a partner at Tangerine, a London-based design consultant where he worked on products ranging from power tools to wash basins. He joined Apple in 1992 and became the leader of the company's design team in 1996.
Ive and his team of designers have received numerous awards from design institutions, including British advertising trade group D&AD, German design museums Red Dot and iF, Industrial Designers Society of America, the (U.K.) Royal Society of Arts. His work has been exhibited around the world and is featured in permanent collections at museums including New York's Museum of Modern Art and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
The rank of CBE is the third most senior rank among the five British classes of chivalry. It was created in 1917 by King George V to honour noncombatants at the height of World War I. Only the first two orders qualify for knighthood.

We're pretty sure it's unfair to characterize any wearable display as a "big-screen, movie-screen, home-theater experience," no matter how good the resolution, but that certainly isn't stopping those crazy kooks over at eMagin from launching their latest headset -- this one intended for use with the iPod (with video) -- the EyeBud (props for not making it the iBud). If you're ready to throw down $600 for what's perhaps the ultimate (or at least the most ultimately expensive) iPod accessory that isn't diamond encrusted, you too can rock a 105-inch "sized" screen in your field of vision while managing to look merely like some bizarre technomad, a marked improvement from previously straight up creepifying HUDs.

What a year for the DCEmu Homebrew & Gaming Network, the network expanded from the original Dreamcast site to take in all of my sites and then with the server problems we upgraded to a Vbulletin Forum and now the forums actually serve as news forums for all the network sites.
The community is expanding at a massive rate with a total of 20 sites under the network covering all these consoles
PSP
Nintendo DS
GBA Micro/GBA SP
Nintendo Gamecube
Xbox
Xbox 360
Dreamcast
PS2
PS3
GP2X
GP32
Nintendo Revolution
Tapwave Zodiac
Gizmondo
Nokia N-Gage
iPod
Retro Consoles & Gadgets
We also have some of the Homebrew scenes best developers hosted here at DCEmu:
Chui
PSmonkey/Nexis2600
GPF
We are a network of sites who post news about Homebrew, Development, Hacking, Emulation and the Commercial side of each console, we never ever take the easy road and post warez or host iso loaders etc, the quickest way to destroy a scene is to do that so we keep well away from it.
This year has seen the emergence of the PSP scene and our PSP News site has enjoyed so many releases to a new console that it has been staggering, of late the GP2X has took over the billing of the scene with the most releases but that could change at anytime.
We have over 18,000 members now and looking at the stats we had over 4100 online at one time and thats pretty damn decent, some of the scenes we cover dont see much activity but we follow them regardless.
In 2006 we hope and well with a nutter like me running the place, this network will get bigger and better and hopefully one day the legal Homebrew scene will be looked on more favourable than it has been in the past, we can but hope
Of course even though i do a heck of a lot of work id like to thank Martin64 for hosting me and my server killing sites (yeah we actually killed a server), also Soully and DS69 and indeed all the staff and mods at DCEmu and the members and helpers who make my job easier, a big thanks to you all, it has personally been a year with some great ups (this network) and some severe downs ( losing family members) but its great to come home and emerse myself in the Homebrew scene, a scene ive followed for 9 years or more (im forgetful), ive had some crackin arguments (yeah those are fun) and made some great friends but its all worth it overall, just remember though without the developers and hackers and i suppose in a smaller way newsposters and webmasters/mods etc you wouldnt have your scene, so its always worth trying to say things in a correct way even if you dislike their work or release.
Ok ive bored everyone to sleep and im drunk anyway but HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

The way to get really rich in US stocks in 2005 was to spot the next fad. Those who foresaw the incredible popularity of the iPod might have invested in Apple Computer, which gained 128.5 per cent.
On its own Apple accounted for a rise of 3.7 points in the S&P 500 index  more than any other stock.
Google, the dominant internet search engine, gained 120 per cent. But the truly perceptive would have seen the potential to profit from the twin trends of AmericaÂs obesity epidemic and the rise of the internet
