Tapwave, the makers of the PalmOS-based Zodiac handheld gaming PDA, have announced—essentially—that the platform is on its way out. The company still stands and will be working to do co-branded products with other companies, whatever that entails. You should probably just go read their statement yourselves. It almost sounds like they’ll be helping people build PSP titles, to me.
But the Zodiac, for all its shortcomings (namely, not being the PSP), is a pretty neat device, especially if you just want a Palm PDA that can occasionally play games.

It's been a trying time for Zodiac fans lately. With clearance-style Zodiac prices in the UK, deep discounts in the US, Fathammer quietly removing the Zodiac from the list of compatible devices for some of its upcoming games, and Tapwave keeping their mouths closed through it all, the future was looking dim. But...at last...Tapwave has provided some answers.
The following is some information, straight from Tapwave's Senior VP of Marketing, Byron Connell. While many of his comments raise more questions than they answer, they do provide some reassurance to Zodiac fans that Tapwave's future is more positive than recent events might have us believe.
******************************
Here is what we are focused on:
Tapwave is starting to transition from offering Tapwave branded retail products to developing new co-branded products for OEM partners (i.e., other leading consumer electronic companies). These partners will be introducing future multimedia products based on both the Zodiac technology platform and Tapwave's next generation technologies. This approach allows us to leverage other company's brands, distribution, marketing funds and geographic expertise. Some of these partner companies are interested in delivering a next generation gaming experience, but most (with the arrival of Sony PSP) are really focused on working with us to create other mobile solutions – e.g., rich multimedia, navigation and communication. Of course, you can see this business transition starting to happen in UK as we speak. This was planned. To facilitate the move to a new OEM business model, Tapwave is also working with Dixons and other UK resellers to manage this transition. Customers are likely to find some good deals in the process and will of course continue to receive great support, etc.
Developing and closing new business and partnership opportunities. You should hear more about this in the coming weeks since we have recently closed a multi-product business partnership with a leading Chinese company.
Developing our next generation multimedia platform.
Raising additional funds to help drive future programs – yes, unfortunately this is an ongoing part of being a small privately funded company. Wish I had Sony or Nokia’s budget
Consolidating our e-commerce software download to a single vendor. Note: Unfortunately customers in UK and Singapore will experience some store access issues during this transition which has just begun.
With that said, there are also some great new developments for Zodiac…
A new Zodiac API is back under development for hardware MPEG4 decode (to help developers take better advantage of the ATI chip for improved video performance). This one has been on my personal wish list for a long time as well.
The new software driver for the Sandisk WIFI+256MB card is very close to release. The beta is currently available for download on our site. The card itself will also be made available from our online store shortly.
New web browser from Nvarra (Nweb) recently completed/enhanced for Zodiac and being readied for release. Very nice application.
Mapopolis GPS solution available and entire US Map collection on a single SD card. Works with both Bluetooth and SDIO based GPS receivers.
The high score reporting/tournament zone project is back in development. We will likely roll out a basic version in beta form first.
A new Bluetooth enabled version of Megabowling.is close to completion (much better than IR based, etc.)
Mototrax MTX (the 1st X-forge 2.0 title) is now GM quality and is still in line for release after final doc, testing and Activision sign off. Other Tapwave branded titles are on hold (not canceled) pending OEM interest.
Based on last week’s discussions with Fathammer, we are also expecting a couple more 3D X-Forge titles from them in the next couple months.
MessagEase for quick and easy input now runs on Zodiac. You can download the Zodiac version from http://www.exideas.com/ME/Downloads.html
Several other great new 3rd party apps/games that you are probably already aware of…etc.

It looks like the Gizmondo will have a huge presence at E3 this year. Tiger Telematics arrives with a finished product this time around, as well as some nifty titles under their belt. The multi-million dollar expo presence is a big, but probably necessary, gamble for the company. They have to grab attention away from the DS, GBA, PSP and Ngage long enough for people to be impressed. They say they’re ready for the U.S. market, but are we ready for them? We’ll certainly swing by the booth when we’re there. What mile mark is it at?

Gizmondo Europe has signed an agreement with Andromeda Entertainment and Just Distribution to distribute a total of 100,000 units across the UK over the next 12 months.
Andromeda supplies consoles and games to the UK mail order industry, and describes itself as the largest specialist supplier to this market. It will distribute 60,000 of the Gizmondo units.
"Andromeda is fulfilling supply following great interest in Gizmondo from the mail order side of the market," said CEO Robert Stein. "From our perspective the home shopping sector has really bought into Gizmondo."
The remaining 40,000 handhelds will be distributed by Just Distribution, which has been supplying independent retailers with games hardware and software since 2001.
"Gizmondo genuinely understands the critical importance of the independent retail channel," said Just Distribution director Andrew Blumson. "The multiple price points of the hardware, especially the Smart Add-enabled version at ÂŁ129, are being viewed with particular interest."
Gizmondo is also working in partnership with DVC Sales to build product awareness amongst both independents and multiples. The contract sales firm already has deals with household brands such as Electronic Arts, Sony Ericsson, Vodafone and JVC.
"Much of the Gizmondo marketing activity thus far has been focused on the introduction of the brand and communicating the six core functions of the device to audiences in and around major UK cities," Gary MacManus, joint Managing Director of DVC Sales.
"Our initial role will be to continue that communication down to store level and build on the excitement already there, to generate consumer awareness, footfall in store, visibility, and sales for our retail partners."
UK independent retailers have welcomed news of the agreement, according to Gizmondo. "Just Distribution represents everything a quality distributor stands for, and here at Lakeside shopping centre, we welcome Gizmondo as a new and refreshing product line," said Gordon Peel, co-founder and director of That'z Entertainment.
Paul Kenwright, director of Virtual Games, added: "We will be fully committed in supporting Gizmondo from launch across all 8 stores."
Carl Freer, co-founder and chairman of Tiger Telematics - Gizmondo's parent company - said he welcomed the deal as part of a long term strategy. "This is a strategic partnership that we believe will work extremely well for our projected hardware and software range, especially at this stage in our company's growth," he said.
The Gizmondo launched in the UK on March 19 and is currently available from branches of John Lewis, Carphone Warehouse and GameStation. There is also a dedicated flagship store on London's Regent Street, and more are planned for 21 cities around the globe. The console launches in Europe on May 19.

Tinnus has updated his mega system emulator for the Tapwave Zodiac and Pocket PCS, heres whats new:
<BLOCKQUOTE>0.9T / 2005/04/20 / Release by Tinnus
----
[SMS/GG] SMS and GG separated in the launcher for simplicity's sake; still THEY USE THE SAME .ZEM FILE
[SMS/GG] Separate folders
[SMS] Folder: /PALM/Programs/LJP/SMS/
[GG] Folder: /PALM/Programs/LJP/GG/
[SMS/GG] Following each of the above is 'Roms/' for your roms and 'Saves' where the saves are stored
[SMS] FInally working with scaling and flters
[SMS/GG] Corrected graphical glitches
[SMS/GG] 'Sonic issue' is gone, compatibility is near 100% now
[SMS/GG] Some memory leaks corrected, but some still present; see note below
[SMS/GG] I think Hi-res+ (480x320) won't work (some code commented) but feedback on this is appreciated
[SMS/GG] Still no sound. Please DO NOT TRY ENABLING IT BECAUSE IT CAN LEAD TO A CRASH.
[ALL] Found that the slider in the GUI is not really broken, but doesn't support draging currently (did it ever support?)
[ALL] So for the slider, simply tap until you get to the desired value
*** IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT MEMORY LEAKS ***
- One consistent memory leak seems to take about 1MB if your memory for each time you run the emulator
- A variable leak takes as much memory as you use the GUI. Each tap increases it.
- So try to use the GUI the very least possible (memory shortage will lead to a crash)

SomeOne has ported two new freeware games to the UIQ platform.
Dynamate is an orginal puzzler by Jonas Norberg where you have to match R,G,B balls with eachother.
Tickypip is a NetWalk clone by Christian Hammond released under GPL. Tickypip is every network administrator's worst nightmares brought to your PDA. You must complete every level by connecting all computers to the main server. The network, however, is horribly fractured, and it may take some creativity and patience to solve some puzzles.

<BLOCKQUOTE>Disables auto-off while the emu is running; handy for in slow-moving games (like Civilization load-time).. careful if you walk away from PDA, but for Treo 600 and such with short auto-offs, this is handy and necessary (device gets funky when it wakes up

Vilmos has again updated his port of MAME to the Tapwave Zodiac and Pocket PC, heres whats new:
<BLOCKQUOTE>MANY more games working and the NeoGeo module is included.
The launcher has a new option, the little P and L icons on the bottom of the launcher screen let you load the game in Portrait or Landscape mode. Note that some game drivers do not support this, so it won't work on all games and on none of the NeoGeo. The joystick also switches control from landscape to portait as you switch.</BLOCKQUOTE>
