Jobs made no secret of iPod's challenge to Sony during his presentation, telling the crowd that the iPod was outselling Sony's latest star product, the PlayStation Portable, or PSP. Sony sold about 2 million PSPs in the last quarter but Apple shipped more than 6 million iPods during that same time.
Offerings from Japanese artists on Sony labels aren't available on iTunes, said Sony Music Entertainment spokeswoman Kiyono Yoshinaga.
"We are in talks with Apple, but we have not reached an agreement at this time," she said, while declining to give details

Advertisers fear their messages may get edited out by the growing band of iPod listeners, writes Paul Durman
PERSONAL video recorders, such as Sky+, are already scaring the living daylights out of television advertisers, fearful that viewers will quickly learn to fast-forward through the commercials. Now the podcasting phenomenon is posing a similar threat to commercial radio.
Podcasting can make radio broadcasts and other audio files available over the internet, allowing them to be downloaded and saved on an iPod or similar digital music player.
Since podcasting started to gain popularity last autumn, it has quickly been embraced by conventional radio companies, in addition to the many amateur broadcasters who were the first to adopt the technology. The BBC and Virgin Radio are both in the vanguard of those experimenting with podcasts.
It is easy to see the appeal. Podcasting breaks down the temporal and geographical limitations of radio. If you want to listen to the Today programme in Toronto at 10pm, you can.
Chris Kimber, head of radio interactive at the BBC, said feedback from listeners had been âoverwhelminglyâ positive. âThe feedback is: âWe absolutely love this. When are you going to start offering more of your programmes like this?ââ The BBC trial includes the Chris Moyles show from Radio 1, as well as the main interview from the Today programme and Radio 4âs From Our Own Correspondent. Kimber said: âYou can listen to it on a plane or on holiday in France. You can take it with you.â
He said the BBC was keen to ensure that radio remained relevant to a mobile generation growing up with the iPod.
The danger, at least for commercial broadcasters, is that the podcast generation will stop listening to the advertisements. It is almost as easy to skip ads with a digital music player as it is with a Sky+ box.
Roger Parry, the chairman of ClearChannel International, part of Americaâs biggest radio company, said: âYou have exactly the same sort of issues that you have with a Sky+ box.
âThe conventional, 30-second spot is threatened. The more power you have to listen to something under your control the less likely you are to sit through (an advertisement).â
Audiences could also fragment if podcasting takes off in a big way. That could have commercial implications. Our listener in Toronto is not very valuable to an advertiser offering tool hire in Tooting.
But there will also be new opportunities. James Cridland, head of new-media strategic development at Virgin Radio, said: âWe believe we can reach new audiences for our advertisers that we otherwise couldnât. Itâs a great marketing tool.
âThere are a lot of people who will be able to sample what our breakfast show is all about who perhaps would not have otherwise listened to Virgin Radio.â
Virginâs Pete and Geoff breakfast show began daily podcasting in March, the first such move by a British radio station.
The podcast is stripped of the news, weather and travel information that would date it. More awkwardly, for copyright reasons Virgin also has to remove the music.
Cridland said: âWhat you end up with is the best of our breakfast show and what people tune in for â which apart from the music is the entertaining and wry observations on the world.â

According to AppleInsider, a patent filed in 2002 by a Microsoft researcher has prompted the US Patent and Trademark Office to reject an Apple application to patent its iPod user interface.
But leave the black helicopters grounded for a moment: the conspiracy theories may not be flightworthy.
The AppleInsider story says the Apple application "to patent the menu-based software interface of its popular iPod digital music player has ultimately proved unsuccessful."
However that isn't the case. The story is coy about the patents it discusses, doesn't mention the Microsoft connection and upon further research, it's clear that several key aspects of the iPod are adequately covered by separate Apple IP applications. Both patents discussed have weathered multiple rejections by the USPTO.
The story reports that last month an iPod-related patent application for "rotational user inputs" by Apple was rejected, with the examiner citing an earlier 2002 application filed by John Platt. A Microsoft Research scientist who used to work for touch pad vendor Synaptics, Platt filed a claim for "playlist generation based on seed items" on May 30 2002, some seven months after the iPod was unveiled.
Comparing the two applications, it's hard to see how they overlap. AppleInsider claims "the process by which the iPod's software displays its own menu-based interface is very similar to the process Platt's filing goes on to describe." Such a similarity eluded us, although you can judge for yourselves - the links are at the end of this report.
Apple's application, assigned to iTunes engineer Jeffrey Robbins, Apple CEO Steve Jobs and VP of marketing Phil Schiller, was made on September 26 2002, and describes rotating an input device to navigate in a linear fashion through a user interface. "Although the type of computing device can vary, the improved approaches are particularly well-suited for use with a portable media player," according to the filing.
AppleInsider reports that the rotational patent has been rejected by the USPTO. However, this isn't as final as the statement suggests. "Non-Final Rejections" (NFR) of this kind aren't unusual. Patents are frequently bounced back to the inventor, and many successful patents are accepted only after several NFRs. For example, an Amazon.com e-commerce patent we wrote about recently succeeded at the fifth attempt in four years.
Apple's rotation application, we discover, received its first NFR on September 29, 2004 and was bounced again on June 13 this year.
But Platt's playlist application also has a rejection history. It received an NFR on 17 November 2002, and a more serious Final Rejection on 14 June 2004. After further documentation was received, and extension granted, the application received another NFR on 11 December last year.
Apple has filed a number of applications to protect the iPod and iTunes user interfaces, including 60/359,551 ("Touch Pad for Handheld Device") and 60/387,692 ("Method and Apparatus for Use of Rotational User Inputs").
Apple is facing two infringement suits claiming the iPod violates existing IP

Maybe it's just my sci-fi minded nature, but when someone says the word "tripod" the first images that comes to mind are disintegration rays and the end of the world as we know it. Yanko Design has released the Boomtune Mini Tripod that is a combination stand and speaker system for your iPod (actually works with any MP3 player.) One AAA player will power this little guy for 10 hours, which is enough time to demolish at least three metropolitan cities. If we had the time, money, and inclination we'd hire Spielberg to remake War of the Worlds with these little guys, with Lego people. Oh - and a Smurf Village, burning in flames too, covered in "blue weed." That would ROCK.

After a number of reports emerged this week stressing concern over Gizmondo's imminent launch in the U.S, the company handling the handheld machine's affairs has responded with a dismissal of the rumours and news of a delayed launch.
Previous accounts in the U.S regarding Gizmondo expressed concern after little information or marketing build-up for the machine had surfaced, with the launch originally scheduled for August 11th. A representative from Gizmondo Europe spoke to GamesIndustry.biz to clarify the situation.
"We're moving the release date, which is why there hasn't been anything promotion-wise yet," said the representative. "The new release date is now October for the North American Gizmondo launch. More details will be released next week. There will be a launch event, but at present it's not been decided where or when."
The slip has been attributed to the lack of two key titles to the territory, a satellite navigation package and "major" unnamed US game. "August is a slow month for retail, and with these two major items of software delayed, it made little sense to launch the machine," said our source.
Further to this, he revealed that the company is suffering a hardware shortage, which would hamper its ability to release Gizmondo across the US as initially planned. It is hoped that the October date will allow more time for distribution as well as giving time for the opening of a Los Angeles office for a Gizmondo specific R&D team and a dedicated marketing staff to couple the current sales team.
He also vehemently refuted the claims of staff downsizing in the London flagship store on Regent Street. "There's the same number of staff and the machine is shifting enough stock. Even then the store is meant to be a technical showcase, there for brand experience, not a box shifting exercise, much like when people go to the Apple shop while getting iPods from somewhere else. It's a focal point for the branding."
Sales figures are expected to be published for Gizmondo soon, with our source stating: "Until the appropriate SEC filings have been made, we're unable to make a statement. We can tell you that we're extremely pleased with sales in the UK so far, and the retail roll-out continues."
Meanwhile, Gizmondo Europe has published this month's game line-up for the handheld, with Classic Compendium, Ball Busters, EA Sports FIFA Football 2005, and SSX 3 all due during the next four weeks. Point of Destruction will be the first of this new batch, releasing this Friday for UKP 9.99.

It would be so like a tennis match if only all the analysts would wear those cute little skirts. Now the word is supposely not to expect the video iPod to see the light of day within the next twelve months. Piper Jaffray senior analyst Gene Munster thinks higher capacity iPod shuffles, yes, and color iPod minis, yes â both before the end of the year. But not so fast on that video iPod, there, buckaroo, because Jobs is still saying the portable media center market isnât there yet. Whatevs, Munster, you new or sumthinâ? Falling for the old Jobs trick? What say you peeps â video iPod before the end of the year, or no?

Okay, whenever you stop guffawing and come back to read this, weâll tell ya that we had the same reaction to this thing â Ignitekâs iCarrier speaker system for the iPod is, shall we say, an unusually designed unit. Standing over three feet tall, it totally dwarfs that poor lilâ iPod, there. iLounge had some quality time with the iCarrier and found âsurprisingly good sound,â for the $249.99 price, although no earth-shaking bass â and falling somewhat short of the âtrue hi-fidelity soundâ promised by its makers. They like that it comes with a remote and hardware that allows any generation iPod to be attached, but some of the parts felt on the cheap side. But hey, if youâre looking for iPod speakers of unusual size, this would be it.

Weâve seen iPod speaker systems come and go (mostly go), and itâs pretty fair to say at this point that if youâre going to bring one to market, itâs got to stand out from the rest. Sure, i-deckâs iPod Music System might not trump Ignitekâs Judge Reinhold-size iCarrier speaker cab, but at least it does come in the surprisingly spacially inefficient shape of a parallelogram. And yes, itâs also going to set you back a couple hundred bucks.

Hi
I have a 3rd generation iPod, and I need to turn the contrast all the way for the text to be legible. After updating to the most recent firmware, things improved slightly, but is there a way to change the default contrast, or a hack of the firmware to acheive this? I've gone into diagnostics mode, and the changes in contrast are only temporary. Thanks

Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia has announced that it's to launch a silver version of the N-Gage QD game deck this autumn across the EMEA territories - Europe, the middle East and Africa.
The new version of the hardware, which will be launched on September 1st in the various markets, is the first update to the N-Gage QD since it launched in mid-2004 - less than nine months after the launch of the first N-Gage.
"We have had a lot of requests from both consumers and trade to provide an N-Gage QD variant," according to Nokia's global sales director for the games business, Jukka Hosio. "We chose silver as it's one of the season's most fashionable colours."
Although it's largely disappeared off the radar for most game news outlets, Nokia also continues to support the N-Gage with a wide range of software releases - including titles such as ONE, System Rush, High Seize and Pathway To Glory Ikusa Islands.

From the Too Little, Too Late, Not That It Could Ever Be Enough Department: Nokia is rolling out the N-Gage QD Silver Edition, a new silver-colored version of the gamephone everybody loves to hate on. Exactly the same as the regular black version, but Nokiaâs only sharing the QD Silver Edition love with Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Yeah, we know how jealous this gonna make all the kids in America.

I think I know the answer to this question, but...
Is it possible to modify an iPod so that it can play more than just the supported audio files (.mp3, .aac, etc.)? I'm specifically interested in playing .nsf, .spc, and .psf on an iPod. If you could do this, I would buy an iPod in a heartbeat.

This is a port of the Raven/Id first person shooter game Hexen. It incorporates pieces of heavily modified code from several of Peter van Sebille projects, along with much of my own work. This port has been verified to work on A920 phones, but is expected to work on A925, A1000, P800, P900, & P910 phones as well. This port has working 8 channel sound, games can be saved and loaded, the screen can be configured for landscape right or left mode, and many of the phones buttons are configurable and usable in the game.
Controls. The game play is controlled via the keys and/or touch screen. There are quite a few on-screen buttons used within the game play. Four hard key's are during game play. Here's a run-down of the hard keys and on-screen buttons:
Direction Keys - used for the basic up, down, left, right movement
Touch Screen Navigation - touch screen can be used to move around as well. Press the touch screen and make a motion in the direction of the desired movement.
Platform hard keys sould be mapped to Fire, Use, Jump, Strafe Toggle, & Fly Toggle features. All five of these are configurable via the Options menu of the app. The Strafe Toggle feature allows you to toggle on or off strafe movement (side-ways while still looking forward) The Fly Toggle feature allows you to toggle on or off flying mode, in which the up and down keys (or touch screen) are used to fly up and down.
Enter & Esc On-Screen keys - used to enter or exit or select within the Hexen menu
Virtual Keyboard On-Screen key - turns on or off the virtual keyboard
1/2/3/4/5/6/7 On-Screen keys - used to switch weapons within the game
Map On-Screen key - used to view the levels map
Square On-Screen key - map-able to any of the above configurable key features via the Options menu
Y/N On-Screen keys - used for two purposes, first to answer Y/N questions within the Hexen menu Second, 'N' is used to select an inventory item and 'Y' is used to "Use" the selected item
Load/Save On-Screen key - short cuts to the Hexen menu game Load & Save options.
Place WAD file on the memory card in "\Media files\document\hexen", the game will look for them there.

Microsoft may be battling the iPod on the digital music front, but on the gaming side Redmond has embraced its Apple rival. The Xbox 360 will enable users to connect a portable music player, including an iPod, to the system and browse or play back music through the console's interface while watching 50 visualizations.
"We see the Xbox 360 as replacing your CD player in your entertainment center, but also as the best digital media amplifier available," said Xbox 360 product manager Barry Steinglass. "Your PC is a great place to manage your music, but it's not always the best place to enjoy it. With Xbox 360 you've got one central place to listen to all your music on the best sound system in the house."

IPOD fans can now play Gameboy games on their IPOD via the Ipod Linux and a cool alpha release of a Gameboy Emulator:
Heres some details:
Only works on 4g ipods
Speed is now at about 70%.
Controls work by touching the wheel at different positions. This makes pressing two buttons (areas of the wheel) at the same time a problem.
The screen is cropped, meaning pixels are lost around the edges.
