News from Lik Sang
Time is at "multimedia convergence". Apple and Sony consider PSP and iPod to be competing products, Microsoft acknowledged the supremacy of the little iTunes player on the MP3 marketplace by including support for it in the Xbox 360... People listen to music, watch movies and play games. Nothing new under the sun since the 20th century, one might point out, except we now do all that in the digital world, where everything is connected together.
iPod is clearly the number 1 when it comes to portable music and it has already been adopted by millions of technology freaks worldwide. A large share of these gadget-lovers happen to be gamers too and are therefore already on this very web page, buying a PSP, a Nintendo DS, searching for an Xbox 360... or getting bored reading this text. One thing is for sure, if your handheld gaming console fits in one of your pockets, the iPod is probably in the other. I know that for one simple reason: me and my colleagues at Lik Sang are exactly the same
For all of us geek-chic specialists, Lik-Sang.com is now happy to provide all the essential accessories for iPod Video, iPod mini, iPod nano and all other iPod generations, at very affordable prices mind you! The starting line-up covered in this feature already consists of a few dozens of products, and we have several more deliveries of additional cool items that are scheduled for the next couple of weeks. So keep sticking to these very columns for future updates to come.
Docking Stations, Speakers, Stylish Stands
If you have a 3G, 4G, Photo or Mini iPod, un-tether yourself from the headphones and start enjoying music with friends through Logitech's M22 Portable Speakers. Well respected in the PC world for great sounding speakers at a good price, these collapse for easy transport, and come with a deluxe, hard-shell travel case. Running off either 4 AAA batteries or the AC adapter (again travel friendly, supporting 100-240V) you can keep the tunes coming whereever you are. At just US$ 59.90, not only are these for iPod, but the standard 3.5mm stereo jack can also bring new life to your discman, laptop or almost any other audio device.
Feel like kicking it up a notch over the M22 speakers? Logitech's MM50 Portable Speakers work with the brand spanking new 5G Video and nano iPods, plus the Mini, Photo, 4G and 3G. Using 3 inch pressure drivers, these bad boys pump out the bass without getting distorted, while 3-D sound processing widens the stereo experience, making the tunes seem to come from an area around 60 cm (two feet) wider than the speakers themselves. No expense has been spared in this set, with features like a wireless remote, built in rechargeable Li-ion battery which lasts up to 10 hours, and through the worldwide (100-240V) AC adapter, it'll charge both its battery and your iPod simultaneously. Again coming with a custom travel case, you can take the big sound from this small package everywhere and anywhere for US$ 149.90
Toss away your limited home stereo remote, leave those CDs in their cases, Logitech is streaming your iPod music over the wireless. By connecting the receiver to your stereo system with RCA jacks (those red and white ports) or any powered multimedia system with a stereo-mini jack, you can use your iPod to select a playlist, change tracks, and even adjust the volume. Time magazine faced off such wireless music transmitters recently, and this one came out on top, but beyond the home stereo solution, Logitech have wireless headphones letting you enjoy digital music with no strings attached. Integrated controls on the headphones let you adjust the volume, select, play and pause tracks without ever reaching for your iPod, and they'll last up to eight hours per charge, coming with an AC Adapter (110-240V).
Both the wireless stereo set and headphones use 2.4Ghz Bluetooth technology, putting them far beyond the FM quality of iPod in-car transmitters. This also packs a range of up to 10 meters (33 feet!), and frequency hopping technology ensures you always get interference free, crystal clear audio. Finally, instead of draining juice from your iPod, the wireless transmitter even has its own rechargeable battery, and accepting sound from anything with a headphone socket, you can use this is on all iPods or other audio players. Experience total musical freedom at US$ 149.90 for the Wireless Music System, or US$ 119.90 for the Wireless Headphones.

In a statement issued today, Virgin Megastores has predicted that Gizmondo will be the fifth most popular games console purchase this Christmas.
Using complex mathematical witchcraft the retail chain concludes that the top five consoles will be Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, Sony PSP, Game Boy Micro and Gizmondo.
Such an estimate seems drastically out of touch, given that nearly 50,000 PS2s were sold last week - with the console recently reaching 100 million sales worldwide - and Gizmondo appears to have been anything but a commercial success.
A representative for Virgin stressed that the figures had spoken, and that numbers for sales projections, current stock held and total units sold were fed into the calculations that produced the forecast.
Anyone suggesting that this must mean Virgin is sitting on warehouses full of unwanted Gizmondo machines should be treated as being 'mostly cynical'.

Now's the time to sign up for the N-Gage Arena Medal Games Tournament and with it, the chance for N-Gage Arena users to prove that they really are the best in the world at their favorite N-Gage titles. With tens of thousands of gamers eligible to participate in five of the N-Gage Arena's most popular titles including Colin McRae Rally 2005 and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, it's time to let the games begin.
Competitors placing within the top ten in any game will earn points, while the top three will receive medals, N-Gage games and their own exclusive merchandise from some of the biggest titles this year. It doesn't end there either. The player with the highest number of points by the end of the Tournament will win themselves an N-Gage QD Silver Edition, more games and even more exclusive merchandise.
The Medal Games Tournament runs from December 2, 2005 until January 2, 2006 , and you can sign up at any time throughout the Tournament, but remember: If you don't sign up you can't take part, so visit http://arena.n-gage.com and get on board.
"Connectivity is such an important part of the N-Gage experience for our gamers," says Rob Sears, director, Community Technology Management, Nokia. "This is our way of showing them how important it is to us too."
The five games featured in the tournament are: Colin McRae Rally 2005, Tomb Raider, Pandemonium, The Sims Bustin' Out and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.
Email and text message alerts will be going out to subscribers of the N-Gage newsletter reminding them to sign up, and users can find more information about the tournament through the new Arena Launcher version 2.5 or by going to http://arena.n-gage.com

Nokia, the leader in mobile communications, announced that in the first quarter of next year, hundreds of thousands of players can expect to be able to connect through "Space Alliance," a massively multi-player online game (MMOG) available on selected Java technology-enabled mobile phones through the Nokia SNAP Mobile service. Announced earlier this year at E3 as "Space Shooter," "Space Alliance" tasks humans with defending themselves from a massively coordinated alien attack. Gamers can go at it alone or build an online team of fellow pilots to destroy these vile creatures and save the human race.
"To really play upon the community aspect that accompanies all Nokia SNAP Mobile titles, we decided to pit gamers against the bad guys in 'Space Alliance,' rather than against each other," said Lisa Waits, head of Nokia SNAP Mobile. "By giving gamers the opportunity to form alliances, we're giving new meaning to the type of comraderie possible in massively multi-player arenas."
"Space Alliance," developed by Monkey Business, is a 3D space shooter game where players take part in a massively co-operative persistent online intergalactic war. Players work together to annihilate alien forces, construct new starbases and fighter factories, build automated defenses, and respond to other players' distress signals. A live moderator provides mid- to long-term strategy for the alien fleets, and can add new elements to a game in play to keep the players busy or to assist them. The moderator also maintains an online "blog" that includes information on the history of the galaxy, and what has taken place prior to the alien attack. Like other titles developed for Nokia SNAP Mobile, "Space Alliance" offers friends list and chat, but also includes score reporting, leader boards and community news boards.
"The game is action packed enough to be played solo, but working as a team offers gamers the sense they are contributing to the greater good," said Burt Sloane, 'Top Banana' at Monkey Business. "Think about it – we all love to cheer for the home team – so what better way to evoke that same emotion in a mobile game than to offer players the chance to join forces? If collaboration isn't the best definition of community gameplay, I'm not sure what is."
All of the online Java games created for the Nokia SNAP Mobile platform are supported by both Nokia and non-Nokia phones. Space Alliance is expected to be available in Q1 2006. To download screen shots and game information, go to www.extranet.n-gage.com. For more on the Nokia SNAP Mobile service, please visit www.snapmobile.nokia.com.

Nokia is ceasing production of its N-Gage 'game deck,' a device that combined an awkward pastie-shaped phone with an awkward, sparsely supported gaming device.
Blighted at first by lousy looks and usability, even a successful redesign couldn't help catch gamers' attention. Too big for phone lovers and too small in the screen for gamers, the device sold just a third of the projected six million units.
Despite discontinuing the unit, Nokia will continue to support its online portal, known as Arena, and new games will still appear for the time being. The device may even have a couple of decent gaming years left – the company plans to integrate gaming into its Series 60 phones, but not until 2007.

Nokia's VP of corporate strategy, Antii Vasara, has confirmed that there are no plans to develop future versions of the N-Gage as the company turns its focus towards other mobile entertainment media.
Speaking to Vnunet, Vasara admitted that the N-Gage did not achieve projected targets, stating: "N-Gage is still being sold but it was not a success in the sense of developing a new category."
"We learnt that people want to play games on all devices. As such we are integrating the gaming software into Series 60 phones."
Nokia will now focus on mobile TV and music with the introduction of handsets such as the N91 - a smartphone that can hold up to 3000 music tracks.
According to Vasara, Nokia will place a greater emphasis on mobile gaming in 2007, by which time screen sizes and quality will allow for better games.
Support for the existing N-Gage and N-Gage QD handsets continues, despite the fact that there are no plans to introduce further iterations in the series. Nokia recently announced the release of a raft of new software, and launched a new online store selling hardware and accessories. The company also continues to run N-Gage Arena, the mobile equivalent to Microsoft's Xbox Live online gaming service.

We’re going to miss our favorite punching bag: after two years of disappointing sales, Nokia’s VP for corporate strategy says that they won’t be putting out any more N-Gage gamephones anytime soon. Sales haven’t been so hot, so they’re going to take the focus off of mobile gaming until 2007, when they expect that mobile technology will have advanced enough to make a dedicated gamephone a viable prospect (fortunately technology advanced enough between the original N-Gage and the N-Gage QD for them to eliminate the sidetalking). In the meantime they’re going continue with their plans to integrate the N-Gage’s gaming platform into regular N-series handsets.

November 22nd, 2005, 01:11 Posted By: wraggster
Apple today said it has shipped more than 30m iPods since it launched the first member of its MP3 player family back in November 2001.
That leaves it with just over a month to sell around 7m more - if it's to meet the 37m target set by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster earlier this month.
"We expect the iPod to continue to be a foundation for growth in other parts of Apple's business, and we expect that by the end of calendar 2005 more than 37m iPods will have shipped, providing Apple with a greater scope of awareness for various products," Munster told investors at the beginning of November.
If Apple is to achieve that goal, it's got Black Friday in the US to look forward to when consumers start spending big time. It also has December's pre-Christmas sales rush around the world to help.
Apple sold 6.45m iPods in the three months to 30 September, and we'd expect the current quarter's shipments - Apple's first quarter of fiscal 2006 - to be higher still. Whether they will be sufficient to meet Munster's target remains to be seen, but the fact it has passed the 30m mark means it's not going to fall short by much.
Apple also said today iTunes Music Store customers had together purchased more than 600m songs, the same figure announced by Apple's iTunes chief, Eddie Cue, at the launch of ITMS Australia late last month.

Voda released a new version of his port of the Amiga emulator UAE to the Palm/Zodiac. Here are the release notes:
- Although no significant changes to the emulation core were made, this version works at least twice as fast if compared to the previous versions (at least on my Clie). This is due to the fact that both binary and data are stored in the same RAM (if possible).
- AGA officially supported. Not all AGA games work, however, especially if high resolutions are used (example Alien Breed, because of intro screen)
- Auto centering on x or y axis (or both).
- Max CPU speed checkbox added. While this may increase emulation speed drastically, it also reduces copmatibility.
- Added limited storage RAM support. This means that you can use all of the available RAM (on storage or heap) as dynamic. Now you can have up to 8MB RAM Amiga even on devices with 4 or less MB heap RAM without the need for third party applications. While I didn't have any lockups with this version, it is strongly recommended to backup first.
- Removed "Kick to RAM" option. Any available memory is now used for kickstart.
- Bug fixes

A member of the Emuboards, retrobits, has ported a large number of rouguelike games to the Zodiac. Roguelike games are adventure games where the character, monsters, terrain, objects, and everything else is represented entirely in text, and the focus of the developer is on gameplay, not graphics. Most, if not all roguelikes are either free or open source. As of now, Angbad, Hengbad, NPPAngbad, Oangbad, Sangbad, Steambad, ToME, and Zangbad have been ported.
All of these are available for free at http://www.retrobits.net/palmos/angband.shtml. Work is also being done on another, Nethack, which will be available shortly. Discuss all games except Nethack here and Nethack here.

A new regulatory filing by Tiger Telematics, the US parent company of Gizmondo Europe, has revealed that the firm's sales immediately after the launch of the Gizmondo handheld earlier this year were extremely weak.
The 10-Q document filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission yesterday provides financial details of the six month and three month periods ended June 30th of this year, which includes the launch of Gizmondo in the UK on March 19th.
Revenues for the six month period - which includes over three months of Gizmondo sales in the UK - were $1.5 million, with the firm admitting that "only minor sales amounts have been recorded" during the period.
That may be something of an understatement regarding the console, which is being sold through a flagship retail store in London's prestigious Regent Street shopping area as well as through a number of retail partners nationwide..
Based on the $1.5 million revenue figure, it seems likely that under 5,000 units of the Gizmondo console were sold during its first three months at retail - and even that figure is optimistic, as it assumes that an extremely high proportion of the units sold were the cheaper Smart Adds enabled devices, and that the vast majority of the revenue came from hardware sales, rather than software and accessories.
However, it should be noted that the company describes the UK launch as being of a "limited production version" of the device, with the US launch in late October described as "full-scale production".
The firm also recently claimed that it had seen a significant spike in sales of the console, around the time that it announced its plans to float on the NASDAQ stock exchange - plans which it says are still proceeding despite the recent departure of key executives Stefan Eriksson and Carl Freer and the subsequent revelations in the press regarding the convictions of several former staff members for their involvement in mafia activities in Sweden.

iPod nano owners lube up your chainsaws ‘cause iDoom is now available for your fragging kicks. Check check, check out the vid ‘cause performance is rockin’ compared to the previous release we saw running on older gen iPods. Caution: this requires iPodLinux (podzilla) which is a fairly risk free install in our experience but could void your warranty. The 5G (video) iPod is not supported nor is sound … yet. But what does that matter to you, soldier … you’re the only human left alive!
Details- - What kinds of iPod is iDoom working on?
Currently iDoom works on the following iPods:
iPod 1G (scrollwheel)
iPod 2G (thouchwheel)
iPod 3G (disorientated keys)
iPod 4G (clickwheel)
iPod Photo
iPod Color
iPod Mini (both versions)
iPod nano
This list will be updated whenever a new iPod is supported by iPodlinux.
- Do I need anything more than iDoom in order to play?
You need to install iPodLinux first, it's only supported for 1-3G and will probably ruin your warranty. However if you really want to install it on other iPods, search their forums for instructions.
Gameplay
- I can only see a gray blur, how do I change the contrast?
You can't change it through iDoom, however if you change the contrast in podzilla, iDoom will be affected too.
- How can I exit iDoom (I'm keep trying to turn the wheel to the right, but that doesn't help)?
Flip [Hold] on, and then off again.
Press [Menu] to change menu item.
Select quit(rotate left) then confirm (rotate right).
- How do I change the controls?
Open the file "keys.key" in your favorite text editor and follow the example in there.
- Why can't I use the wheel to rotate?
The problem lies is the design of the newer iPods clickwheel, how would you run and turn at the the wheel at the same time?
- Why can't I hear any sound?
There is no sound support... yet.
Other
Why are all your iPods broken?
During development and testing of iDoom there have been a few... accidents. It's very straining to port applications, having to read other peoples code and all that, and when things get really bad... things come flying!
Nah, but seriously, they aren't all broken. Benjamins 2G iPod is broken it now suffers from partial amnesia with it's damaged harddrive that has enough bad blocks to scare away a cluster. Mattias 2G iPod Mini has a crack in the plastic cover, not affecting the functionality, but nevertheless unfashionable. Benjamins nano isn't broken at all, it just looks crappy since he has it wrapped in different kinds of plasic (mostly scotch tape) to keep his nano free from scratches.
