US manufacturer Battery Technology has come up with a rather neat accessory for iPod owners who've downsized to a Nano from an older third or fourth generation player, or from an iPod Mini. It's a connector that allows you to plug almost all of your old headphone accessories into your new player.
The u-Link clips onto the Nano's dock connector and into the player's earphone socket. On the other side is a new 3.5mm socket and remote control slot ready for old iTrips, remote controls, iBeams and other accessories.
Not all will, mind. Apparently, the u-Link isn't much use if you want to plug your Griffin iTalk or Belkin Voice Recorder into your Nano - probably because the voice recording software's not on the player.
The company's selling the u-Link through a wide range of reseller and retailers, online and high street, in the US and Europe, including the UK's iWorld, which is offering the product for a tenner, and from whom we nabbed the pic.

Another pro DJ equipment company is presenting dumbed-down DJing with iPods, with the release of Phonic’s new MixPod DJ mixer. The feature set, down to the video out connection and onboard controls, is nearly identical to the Numark
iDJ. And while the MixPod has none of the iDJ’s visual beauty, it has all of the iDJ’s problems: you can’t scratch, you can’t cue, and you’re limited by all the restrictions of the iPod. Basically, you can’t really DJ. We just have to wait for Creative Labs to copy this, and the circle will be complete. Now, will someone please go buy these DJ kids real turntables instead, or at leat get them to figure out how to use their laptops?

Nokia has just released turn-based strategy game Civilization for their handheld N-Gage device. The title looks fantastic, surprisingly. We weren't sure how the game would translate to the small-screen, but the videos on the official site give a decent feel for what it's like to play the game thanks to the thoughtful inclusion of menu systems.
If you've tried it out, share your take on it. We're curious how it plays.
If you hain't tried it out, don't hate. Great game experiences can come from surprising places!

Despite overall tepid sales for their current-generation mobile gaming device, Nokia's recent investment in BitBoys, a designer and manufacturer of graphics hardware for mobile devices, shows that the company intends to continue to play in the field of mobile gaming for the long run. Sure, 4 million euros is mere sofa change for a company that makes over $40 billion a year and is sitting on nearly $12 billion in cash, but it's still a significant gesture and is likely only one investment in an entire portfolio that includes all sorts of technology that may have next-gen gaming potential.
From the press release: "Dedicated 3D or vector graphics processors stand to dramatically improve the graphics capability of mobile devices. Applications include enhanced user interfaces that are easier and more fun to use; next-generation mobile games; maps and navigation; web browsing; and entertaining graphics content that will drive consumer demand for more sophisticated wireless devices."
Will the current titans of gaming ever let a company like Nokia steal a significant share of the mobile gaming business? The next-version N-Gage could be a contender, if the company learned from its missteps.

Yup, got another Apple rumor for ya here, step aside people. No, it's not word on the supposedly-forthcoming Mac we want oh so much, the media Mac mini, but it does have to do with the iPod dock that device was supposed to have. According to ThinkSecret, Apple's first run of Intel Mac minis that are now going into production overseas had their top-loading integrated iPod docks swiped at the last minute. Yes, we know this isn't as big a deal as the media mini itself, but there are a fair number of people out there who were pretty stoked for some hard iPod on Mac mini action. And to them we say: well, it was only a rumor anyway, wasn't it?

If you sell your iPod and don't remove your music first, you could find yourself with the Recording Industry Ass. of America (RIAA) breathing down your back. The organisation last week told sellers in the US that doing so is a clear violation of copyright law and warned them that it's sniffing out for infringers.
Apple's rapid iPod refresh schedule, not to mention those of its competitors, have generated a tide of old music player offers in classified ads columns and on sites like eBay. Rather too many sellers are shipping their old machines with music libraries intact - some we've seen even make a virtue of the fact.
But it's illegal, not only in the US but also in the UK and the rest of Europe. As, incidentally, is ripping all your CDs and LPs to MP3 then selling or even giving away the originals. By disposing of your physical media, you're ending your right to use the music they contain. The RIAA's point, made in an MTV online report is that handing over music on a music player is no different from duplicating a CD and selling the copy.
The only way around the problem is to either erase the iPod, or make sure it ships with only copies of the music - downloads if that's how they were obtained, or the original physical media. And don't keep copies yourself.

We already knew that between MPEG-LA, Via Licensing and others, MPEG-4 and the H.264 codec were already awash with patent holders and complicated royalty systems, but it looks like there's a new kid on the block that wants its share of Apple, CyberLink, DivX, InterVideo and Sonic Solutions pie. Fresh from its SBC merger, AT&T is going after the big iPod bucks claiming that the device infringes on their patents which they claim are "a core component of MPEG-4." AT&T claims that they're not just after the money and that they're looking to "make sure others are able to take advantage of this technology," but they also state: "what we're doing is pretty common among intellectual property holders," which isn't exactly comforting given the tech industry's history with such things.

If you're a regular reader of Engadget then you know the two best means of securing research funding are: (1) claim you're developing a robotic companion for the elderly or, (2) somehow link yourself to the ĂĽber product du jour, iPod. Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) took up the latter approach yesterday by unveiling an iPod nano which communicates with earphones via your body's ability to pump electrical signal. Oh sure, the prototype requires the user to keep a finger pressed to the iPod to close the circuit and there's always risk of a nasty infection after implanting the 10-microwatt/2Mbps chip in your forearm but hey, prototype or not think of the time you'll save not having to untangle your headphone cables every morning. Hey KAIST, don't forget to pay out royalties to Microsoft when this goes big 'cause they hold patent No. 6,754,472 (source of picture) detailing the use of human skin as a power conduit and data bus, mkay? Apparently the prototype was demonstrated without humans, but come on, you know some undergrad meat-sack went and secretly "sacrificed" himself for the cause...wouldn't you?

There's not a whole lot to say about the 1GB iPod nano that hasn't already been said about the 2 and 4GB versions of the same iconic player, but in iLounge's official review of the device they did note that the screen isn't backlit nearly as well as its older siblings. We have no idea if this has something to do with a new screen components supplier in late-model nanos or if this is something specific to the 1GB version, but if you should happen to have a some nanos of various sizes lying around, let us know why don't you?

It's essentially what everyone's expected and speculated by this point (us included), but ThinkSecret's latest iPod rumor plays into everyone's hopes that Apple's got a proper video iPod in development. According to TS, they can confirm that Apple's next device will have a 3.5-inch display (the current 5G iPod has a 2.5-incher) and will shed the clickwheel entirely for a virtual UI with input via a touchscreen. We know they've got their Mac tablet patents together on this kind of tech and have presumably been doing the dev work to make it happen (their last patent specifically showed an iPod-like virtual clickwheel touch interface in spec). Will this strange new device support Portal Player's new all singing all dancing WiFi / Bluetooth A2DP chipset for the killer 6G video iPod everyone's been hoping for? We can't say, sonny, but the rumor mill's tilt is that we could find out in late March or early April, when Apple celebrates its 30th birthday.

Following the High Court's refusal to accept Gizmondo Europe's application for administration last week, it's been announced that the troubled company has officially gone into liquidation.
In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, parent company Tiger Telematics revealed that two liquidation firms have been appointed - David Rubin and Associates and Bigbee and Traynor.
Tiger Telematics expects the firms to make any remaining Gizmondo Europe employees redundant, to wind up operations such as the Gizmondo customer support service and email, and to sell off all assets. This, combined with the previously announced liquidation of Gizmondo's development studios in Sweden and Manchester, is expected to generate around USD 72 million - enough to cover around 80 per cent of the company's liabilities.
Technically speaking, Gizmondo's US arm is still operating - but the future is not looking bright and Tiger Telematics is currently looking at "available options with its Texas games studio subsidiary and its kiosk sales units."
According to the SEC filing, "Strategic options for the Company include the possible sale of the Company or all or a portion of its assets, the sale of Gizmondo intellectual property rights, including patents and game rights which are owned by the Company, and continuing operations in the USA, which would require substantial debt and or equity financing."

Elekom presented a series of ball-shaped compact speakers last year, but unfortunately none of the colors (blue, pink, etc.) really made it look cool with your iPod. Finally at the beginning of February, two new colors (or absence thereof), black and white, are going to be on the market. About two inches in diameter, it has a stereo mini plug for your portable audio player. The plug and cable can be stored inside.
Japan only, but we expect them to find their way into import shops soon enough.

Nokia today unveils Atari Masterpieces Volume 2, the latest catalogue of classic Atari arcade games for the N-Gage platform.
Atari Masterpieces Volume 2 brings eight of the most popular original Atari arcade-games to the N-Gage world, including Asteroids Deluxe, Crystal Castles, Centipede, Liberator, Pong, Space Duel, Tempest and Warlords. Additional features include four bonus unlockable Atari 2600 titles, including 2600 Air-Sea Battle, 2600 Canyon Bomber, 2600 Mini-Golf and 2600 Video Checkers.
"We've teamed up with Backbone Entertainment, creators of RIFTS®: Promise of Power TM and Shadow-Born to create Atari Masterpieces Volume 2, the second heritage-rich Atari games compilation compiled for the N-Gage – the gamers phone ," said Gregg Sauter, Director, Games Publishing, Nokia. "These games play virtually identically to the originals, but with an N-Gage twist; gamers can upload their high-score onto the N-Gage Arena for new century bragging rights and, as an added bonus, two people can play on one N-Gage together, using the Hot Seat function."
Atari Masterpieces Volume 2 for the N-Gage will start shipping in March 2006.
About the games:
Asteroids Deluxe: The sequel to Asteroids in 1981. Asteroids Deluxe added new enemies and a powerful shield button, when players experienced difficulties.
Centipede: Centipede pitted players against a never ending barrage of spiders, fleas, scorpions and of course, centipedes as they tried to fill the screen with mushrooms. The game's fast paced action made it an instant classic.
Crystal Castles: Crystal Castles was one of the most beautiful and puzzling games ever made. Players took control of Bentley Bear as he explored mazes, trying to collect gems without being caught by his enemies.
Liberator: Liberator is one of the rarer arcade games in the Atari line-up - fewer than 800 arcade cabinets were produced. The game has been described as Missile Command® in reverse!
Pong: The game that started it all. Legend goes that the original prototype of the game was tested in a tavern in Sunnyvale, California, and used a bread pan as its coin collector.
Space Duel: The only multi-player vector game ever released by Atari - Space Duel first hit arcades in early 1982. Its mix of fast action, Asteroids style play and bright colors quickly made it a cult hit.
Tempest: Tempest was one of the most abstract, but addictive games to ever hit the arcade. Originally trying to build a 3D version of another common Arcade game, it took a bad dream to deliver the idea of plummeting down into the levels instead of the other way around.
Warlords: Warlords first hit arcades in 1980 and launched a multi-player revolution. Warlords allowed players to catch a flaming ball and sling it at the castles of their foes.

The English High Court has ordered Gizmondo Europe to be liquidated, according to The Register. Looks like parent company Tiger Telematics' funding plans haven't gone according as they'd hoped, and it may have to sell off its Gizmondo USA operation." From the article: "Tiger said it was considering its own future in the light of the High Court verdict, and of the liquidation of its game studios in Sweden and Manchester, England. For starters, it's now able to eliminate $72m of the $90m liabilities recorded on its balance sheet as of 30 September 2005. It said it was pondering the sale of the whole company, parts of it, or elements of the intellectual property it owns, 'including patents and game rights, and continuing operations in the USA'.

It was a quiet introduction with no announcement, no fanfare, and certainly no warning -- not that we hadn't expected this -- but today Apple threw up a 1GB nano on their store for $149. Yup, same nano we've all come to know and, um, wipe smudges and scratches constantly. Thing is, we know that Apple doesn't like making a big deal when they start phasing out old products, and from the look of things that could be what they're doing with the shuffle, which got a price slash itself, the 512MB version down to $69 and the 1GB version down to a Benjamin. Somehow we can imagine they'll be selling a lot more nanos than ever before, and they probably won't be of the 2GB/$200 or 4GB/$250 variety, feeling us?
