In yet another sign that maybe this whole "trial by jury" thing isn't all it's cracked up to be, jurors in the grand theft auto case against former Gizmondo Europe director and current jailbird Bo Stefan Eriksson were unable to come to a unanimous decision regarding his guilt or, ahem, innocence, resulting in a mistrial. Although ten members of the Los Angeles panel felt that Eriksson did indeed steal a Ferrari and a Mercedes imported from England, two of the jurors apparently bought the defense's rather lame excuse that the one-time mobster only stopped making payments because his sham of a company finally disintegrated. Luckily for fans of justice and fast cars, prosecutors have already stated that they are planning to retry Eriksson for the same crimes, not to mention the weapons charges that the slippery Swede still has hanging over his head. At this point it's not clear why those two jurors chose to remain so steadfast in their convictions, although it's somewhat telling that they were spotted skipping around the courthouse halls after the trial was over, clutching unsold Gizmondos in one hand and hundreds of shares of nearly worthless Xero Mobile stock in the other.

Apple has just busted out an 8GB (PRODUCT) RED Special Edition iPod nano to appease your storage lust. The new version costs $249, just like its black 8GB counterpart, and Apple will be donating the same $10 of each sale to the Global Fund that it's currently forking over for 4GB versions. Not too bad for a bit of iPod hawterness you were planning on nabbing anyways, right?

Toronto-based StyleTap has released the final version of its Palm OS emulator and application migration tool for Windows Mobile devices - and it's already pledging a Symbian version.
Also called StyleTap, the software runs apps written for any version of the Palm OS, including code created for the ARM-based version of the operating system, developed by PalmSource - as it was then - to help software developers move their code over from the old Motorola 68000 platform to the new ARM-equipped PDAs.
StyleTap said its tool allows games and multimedia apps to run at full speed, and can handle networking links via the host device's own Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, infrared or USB connections.
In a move not so far from PalmSource's erstwhile strategy for bring Palm OS apps into the ARM era, StyleTap not only emulates the Palm OS but also provides an API linked to the underlying Windows Mobile infrastructure. This will allow coders to modify their applications to get better performance and, argues StyleTap, as better user experience, on a PocketPC, but at the risk of tying it to StyleTap, a commercial app that costs users $50 to download.
StyleTap said it plans to follow up the Windows Mobile version of its "platform" with a Symbian release and another aimed at Windows Mobile-based smart phones. It's also working on a corporate-oriented version which adds support for enterprise-friendly hardware, such as barcode scanners.
StyleTap 1.0 is available from the company's website as a 14-day trial.

Is iTunes 7 breaking iPods? If you ask Apple reps, they'll say no, but owners of slightly older iPods, nanos and shuffles have noticed their players dying as soon as they upgrade to iTunes 7. Apple's response? Buy a new iPod, sucka.

In between posting rumors about iPhones, touchscreen iPods, and eight-core Mac Pros, we've been wondering when that sexy new "matchbox meets boombox" iPod Shuffle first revealed at September's "It's Showtime" event would start shipping to eager customers. Well thanks to reader Brad, we now know that Apple has begun sending its most diminutive DAP to those folks who already placed their pre-orders, with Brad's notification indicating a delivery date of November 3rd. So if the new Shuffle hasn't hit retail channels already, it'll be available any day now, or you can hit up Apple's online store to get the process started immediately. As for us, we're gonna wait around for a bit and keep our eye on eBay; even though this tiny 'Pod is only $79 to begin with, it's so easy to lose that we'll probably get a better deal buying one of the many second-hand units inevitably dropped in buses, taxis, and subway cars nationwide.

A code that prevents songs downloaded from Apple's iTunes store being played on any other device besides the iPod has reportedly been hacked.
According to DoubleTwist, the firm that intends to license the code, 22-year old hacker Jon Lech Johansen managed to 'reverse' Apple's FairPlay copy-protection technology.
AdvertisementCurrently, songs bought from other online download stores do not work on the iPod. Apple's iTunes has an 88% share of the music download market, and 60% of those with digital music devices own an iPod.
The hacking technology could potentially help rivals offer devices that play iTunes-bought downloads and downloads that work on iPods.
Apple has declined to comment on the announcement.

Sonnet is a little coy about just how much extra playtime the 2,100mAh battery in its Volta add-on for the 5G iPod - and its recent update. It provides a set of "estimates" that don't quite add up. If it adds an extra 50 hours' audio playback time to a 30GB iPod, why does it add 60 hours more to a 60GB or 80GB model?
But what are we complaining for? With even a baseline 50 extra hours of listerning and, more importantly, 7-18 hours more video playback time, all for just £45, who's grumbling?
Volta connects to the iPod via a dock connector, but provides a slot of its own so the player can be charged and stocked with content while it's fitted into the Sonnet device. Sonnet bundles a USB-to-dock cable so you'll always have one handy, and the unit ships with side latches to hold the iPod in place. Four charge-status LEDs keep you informed how much playtime the Volta can provide before it drops out and the iPod's own battery takes over.

Tim Closs, chief technical officer for Ideaworks 3D, has predicted that the next generation of mobile phones will be on a par with Sony's PlayStation Portable when it comes to performance.
Speaking in an interview with MobileIndustry.biz, Closs said, "In some ways, console and mobile are becoming closer in terms of the actual horsepower of the devices.
"The high-end mobile devices, especially those with hardware graphics association, are comparable in performance to maybe a DS, and the next generation are going to be comparable maybe to PSP."
Closs believes PC and console game publishers are taking more and more interest in mobile gaming - particularly since Jamdat was acquired by Electronic Arts.
"When a player as significant as EA makes that kind of move it validates our vision for mobile gaming," Closs said.
"It's led to a closer collaboration between us and major publishers who have woken up and thought, blimey, if EA are doing this we really need to be looking closely at mobile as well.
"From a publisher's perspective, they're actually looking at these two spaces as being very similar, and looking at how they can address development across both as a single process."
However, Closs did admit that there are still problems to be overcome before the mobile gaming market reaches its full potential."One of the issues is still the problems from the operators' perspective - making it easy for people to actually buy and download these games," he explained.
"That's something that everyone in the industry is working very hard on, to try and make them improve their processes and make the user experience much easier."

Not too long ago, Stefan Eriksson was living a life of luxury. Even though one of his investments, the Gizmondo handheld, was a financial disaster, the former gaming exec was still riding around in Malibu in flashy cars--that is until one of them was totaled on a stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway. The incident set off a bizarre investigation into whether or not Eriksson was parading around in stolen vehicles. Yesterday, the opening statements were made in Eriksson's trial, in which he is charged with embezzlement and auto theft. Eriksson has pled no contest to drunk-driving charges and also has a pending case on gun charges.

Hard to believe it, but a half decade ago today Steve Jobs stood up in front of a small crowd and introduced an "MP3 music player... that plays all of the popular open formats of digital music, MP3, MP3 VBR, WAV, and AIFF," a device that changed the consumer electronics industry forever. Of course, that device was the iPod. Love it or hate it (we tend to have mixed feelings about it 'round Engadget HQ), the iPod helped to make consumer electronics cool again, and managed to be a huge step forward for the CE industry shortly after the tech bubble had burst -- and during a time when the country was in turmoil after the attacks of 9/11, no less. No, the iPod wasn't the first digital music player -- not even the first with a portable hard drive -- but we're not going to wax on about what it was that charmed tens of millions of consumers out of their hard earned cash. So we figured it'd be enough to present to you an iPod family tree, do a little groundskeeping to make sure the iPod family cemetery is in good shape, and let you blow out the iPod's birthday candles whichever way you like.
