Vivendi Games has announced the acquisition of mobile games developer Centerscore in a deal which covers the studio's back catalogue as well as titles currently in development.
Centerscore, whose previous titles include Spin Blocks 360, Alone: The Horror Begins and Amy's Hangman, will continue to be based in San Mateo, California. CEO Oliver Miao will remain in his role, reporting to Vivendi Games Mobile president Paul Maglione.
Vivendi Games' chief strategy and marketing officer, Cindy Cook, described the acquisition as "another step in our plan to be among the top mobile publishers in the industry".
Maglione added: "Centerscore's imaginative games have consistently been top sellers, and the diverse lineup of titles, particularly their excellent range of casual games, is a welcome addition to our existing portfolio."
"What we found most exceptional about Centerscore is the company's ability to successfully build a team of designers, artists, developers and testers from the ground up, and to execute the creation and distribution of great games from under one roof."
The news follows the publication of Vivendi Games' latest financial report, which revealed a profit increase of more than 12 per cent during the second quarter of 2006. Financial terms of the deal will not disclosed.

EA, PopCap, Namco to provide content
Apple has finally announced a range of games for its iPod media player.
Downloadable directly through the iTunes store, titles will cost US$ 4.99 (4 euros) and be playable on fifth generation iPods.
The full list of titles includes familiar names, with Pac-Man, Tetris, Mahjong, Bejeweled, Zuma, Cubis 2, Texas Hold 'em, Mini Golf and Vortex all now available.
With Namco, Electronic Arts, PopCap, FreshGames and Apple itself supplying content, the move has been instantly seen as a confident stride into the casual games market, a view fuelled by the fact that iPod is already ubiquitous with mobile entertainment.
Although some third-party coders have ported popular games in the past, the move from Apple confirms a commitment to the games market, as rumoured back in May of this year.

At some time around 10:22AM Pacific Time, by our estimations, Steve Jobs introduced to the world iTunes 7, Apple's latest and greatest hardware / software / service glue for their best-selling online media initiative. Everyone cheered its album art functions, enhanced video resolution, and movie downloads; a few of us, though, silently winced on behalf of QTFairUse / myFairTunes6 users everywhere, who'd been successfully stripping the DRM off their Apple FairPlay protected files for a few weeks now. Then, at 6:23PM PST, QTFairUse version 2.3 came out, which added (beta) iTunes 7 support. By our approximation that means it took Igor (no, not Iger) about 8 hours and 1 minute to crack the latest major iTunes update. Not bad, but we were hoping for something in the 4-6 hour range; it would seem to us the anti-DRM community is resting on its laurels. Don't make us crack the whip, guys!

Griffin just slipped three new iPod accessories into the Apple Expo showroom: the iKaraoke, iTalk Pro, and TuneCenter. The iKaraoke allows you to fade-out the vocals from your favorite songs and replace 'em them with your very own self-stylings over the included mic. The results can then be pumped out your stereo over the wire or wirelessly via the embedded FM transmitter. Three levels of reverb are available to improve your vocals for, well you know, when the sake just ain't enough. The new iTalk Pro boasts not just one, but two built-in mics for 16-bit stereo or 8-bit mono audio recordings. But you'll need to drop an external mic into that 1/8-inch jack, jack, if you need greater stereo separation. Last, and certainly least, is the TuneCenter -- another of those iPod media docks with remote controls. Only this dock sports a "full-slate" of Internet Radio stations -- bonus! No pricing has been announced, or availability, but we've got some bigger snaps after the break and that's gotta count for something.

For the better part of a year, rumors have run amok that Apple was getting into games. In May, GameSpot was told by a tech-sector recruiter that former LucasArts developer Mike Lampell was heading up a group inside Apple's storied iTunes division, which was recruiting "C/C++ coders with a 'gaming background.'"
Today at a "special event" held by Apple in San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Apple finally made it official. As of today, games will be available for download on the company's popular iTunes service. The cost per game will be $4.99, the same price as many Xbox Live Arcade games.
Ironically, many of the iPod games Apple is offering are already available on Xbox Live Marketplace. Foremost among them are Namco Bandai's arcade classic Pac-Man and the puzzlers Bejeweled and Zuma, both from PopCap Games. Other available titles are Texas Hold 'Em, Mahjong, Vortex, Mini Golf, and the mother of all puzzle games, Tetris. "Each game plays perfectly on your iPod using the intuitive click wheel as a controller," according to Apple.
Unfortunately for owners of older models, all Apple games are playable only on fifth-generation video iPods, which were released last year in 30GB and 60GB versions, and the new models announced today, which will be on store shelves in 30GB and 80GB flavors in October. The new iPods will retail for $249 and $349, respectively, will be 30 percent thinner than their predecessors, and will sport screens that are 60 percent brighter and have higher resolution. iTunes will soon offer movie downloads as well.

Damn, looks like even the humble iPod shuffle is getting a bump today. After having sold 10 million of the first-gen shuffles, the new model is now reportedly the size of the iPod radio remote, comes in just a 1GB capacity, and sports a shiny new aluminum body with a clip for easy wearability. Steve's calling it the "world's smallest MP3 player" and hey, who are we to argue? It's available for preorder today and expected to ship with its itty bitty dock and ear buds sometime in October, for the bargain basement price of only $79.

As if those spotlit "It's Showtime" Apple announcements weren't going to yield the iTunes Movie Store; just in time too, as CinemaNow and Movielink have been around for ages, Vongo's been kicking for months, Amazon's Unbox just hit the streets the other day, Microsoft's Zune video player is just around the corner, and Netflix's movie service is expected any time. With the iTunes Movie Store now available in Apple's new iTunes 7 you'll be able to download full res (640 x 480) movies at $9.99 apiece for most titles, $14.99 for new releases and $12.99 for pre-orders. The files are protected, of course, with FairPlay DRM; they'll play back on your iPod, but not much else, unfortunately, so if you want movies the iTunes way, be prepared to watch them in iTunes or to get yourself an iPod. Sadly, it seems the rumors were true of it being a Disney-only store: Apple so far has only managed to procure 70 movies for their launch, from the Disney-owned Walt Disney, Pixar, Touchstone, and Miramax studios. They're promising frequent updates, though, and they will be launching new movies at the same time that they're released on DVD. As for iTunes 7, there's plenty of good news to be had beyond the addition of movie downloads. Gapless playback (which is happenin' in all the new iPods) is the big winner, and iTunes 7 can go through your whole library and fix previously downloaded tracks to play gapless. The player has also gotten a substantial face lift, borrowing from WMP11 stylings for track listings, tossing in Cover Flow (a third-party OS X eyecandy favorite which Apple apparently bought), a good helping of whitespace and Apple's own design know-how.

In an unusual turn of events, Apple has pre-announced a wireless video streaming set-top box to be released in Q1 2007 with the tag line "you can take content to your computer or iPod, but now... TV." Going by the codeword of iTV, the box looks like a flattened Mac mini -- apparently it's around half the height -- and features a built-in power supply, USB 2.0, Ethernet, 802.11 "wireless component video", optical audio and HDMI ports, plus regular ol' RCA stereo audio ports. Controllable by the standard Apple remote, the iTV will come with an updated version of the Front Row interface that shares Front Row's smooth 3D graphics, but differs in that it has a menu on the right side of the screen. Apparently it'll work with both iTunes on both PCs and Macs, and will sell for $299.

Electronic Arts has confirmed support for the launch of Nokia’s next-gen mobile phone games platform, with a range of titles custom-designed for Nokia S60 devices.
Through Nokia’s Content Discoverer, consumers are able to download EA games through virtual shopping malls directly to their mobile devices.
“Nokia shares our vision of making it easy for people around the world to find and play the best quality games on their mobile phones,” said Mitch Lasky, senior VP of EA
“We are looking forward to working more closely with Nokia on promoting a delivery system that propels mobile gaming forward. This relationship will bring together EA's great brands and development studios with Nokia's innovative hardware and global consumer reach,” he added.
Some of EA’s biggest franchises initially available will include The Sims 2, FIFA 06, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06, FIFA Street 2, Doom, Tetris and Tetris Mania.
Nokia’s next-generation mobile phone gaming platform is due to launch in the first half of 2007, and continues the work already established by the company via its N-Gage gaming deck.
“The core of Nokia’s games strategy is to make it easy for people to find, buy and play great quality mobile games and we’re excited to expand our relationship with EA to help make that possible,” said Jaakko Kaidesoja, director of games and multimedia at Nokia.
“Nokia and EA have a common vision regarding the opportunities in mobile games and how to turn them into a reality.”
“When you combine Nokia’s leadership in hardware, usability and software platforms with EA’s brands and quality thresholds, the results will speak for themselves,” he added.

Not quite the video iPod we were hoping for, not by a long shot, but Apple is refreshing their flagship iPod (with video) models today with a whole lotta' software love, and a couple hardware tweaks for good measure. The screen is now 60% brighter, the battery can last up to 3.5 hours during video playback, and the iPod includes new headphones, but otherwise the specs remain the same. As for software, the iPod is finally getting gapless playback, text-based search and brightness controls, along with a whole slew of games. The 'Pod has Bejeweled, Cubis 2, Mahjong, Mini Golf, Pac Man, Tetris, Texas Hold 'Em, Vortex, and Zuma bundled, and you can nab new games for $5 each off of iTunes. Maybe the best news is that Apple is dropping the prices and bumping the storage: you can get a spankin' new 60GB iPod for $250, and the new 80 gigger for $350. No word yet on availability.

As expected, Apple's hot-selling iPod nano has been given a big-time update with some mini-like colors, new capacities, better displays, better batteries, and new pricing. They all sport an even-thinner aluminum case and are available in (again, mini-like) green, silver, black, blue, and pink. However, the 2GB and 8GB version are available in aluminum and black only, respectively. As for pricing, $149 for 2GB, $199 for 4GB, and $249 for the 8GB model. Apple sez: "Double the storage for the same price," and they're available today. What's more, the new packaging is 52% less volumetric than the old iPod nano, making it "environmentally friendly." Expect to see tons of these on the subway by next week.

You know that people are trying to jump on the iPod bandwagon when someone releases a breathalyzer that connects to the ubiquitous music player. Yes, David Steele Enterprises (no, not that David Steel) has just released an iBreath ($50, black or white color), a small device to plug into the dock connector of your iPod. Sticking out of the side of the device is the breathalyzer tube, and within five seconds it'll read out your blood alchohol content level, accurate to within 0.01 BAC -- oh and if that wasn't enough, it doubles as an FM transmitter for your car stereo. That just leaves us with one burning question: will Mr. Steele be sending one to recently DUIed Paris Hilton?

While mixin' it up iPod-style has certainly been done before, MusicJam is looking to combine the simplest of mixer functions with a karaoke machine in its aptly-named iPod Mixer. Essentially, this device allows you to add your own vocals and guitar riffs to the tune currently playing on your iPod, which could definitely bring out the "one man band" in any musician. The mixer sports an iPod dock (presumably compatible with the iPod with video only), microphone / guitar inputs, volume sliders, tone / distortion controls, RCA outputs, and even attempts to replicate that on-stage allure by touting echo / sustain options for your vocs. The company also throws in a microphone, mic clamp, and cabling to get you warmed up, and includes "KaraokeVideos" software to turn any jam into an iPod-compatible karaoke vid. While the quality here is certainly questionable, it looks to be a solid addition to your Korg-infused Les Paul, and hey, getting you fully prepped for that karaoke circuit will only set you back $229.

gasman posted this news:
Hi... just thought I'd draw people's attention to a new iPod release (for Nano only) on the demoscene. This one's actually nothing to do with me, but from a quick search it doesn't seem to have been mentioned around here yet...
For the uninitiated, the demoscene is a computer subculture devoted to showing off with fancy graphical and musical demonstrations, which are known as demos. They aren't demos in the sense of 'something coming soon' or 'pay me $20 for the full thing' - they're standalone programs to be enjoyed in their own right. They're generally non-interactive, and most importantly, have visuals rendered in real time. I must emphasise, this isn't a video player... what you see is generated on-the-fly.
For a long time the only iPod demo was my own effort, "Podfather", but now someone else has stepped up and produced something considerably more impressive.
