According to CNET, Cingular [aka, the new AT&T] has "confirmed" June 11 as the release date for Apple's iPhone. Keep in mind that confirmation in this case is unofficial as it supposedly comes from a front-line sales support person. See, after a call to Cingular's customer service, CNET was transfered to sales where they were told of the magical date. Of course, all this makes perfect sense as the 11th also marks the kickoff of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference where Steve and Co are always keen to announce new wares

New release of the Nes Emulator for the Ipod:
Sorry for going missing for such a long time. I've havn't updated much. Improved speed slightly by moving the redrawing routine to the coprocessor. Fixed sound a bit by changing the timing (a hack because its slow). I've only updated the nano version for now. Same link as usual.
The source code... now bear in mind its pretty sloppy. Which is also the reason i didn't want to release it in the first place. But if anyone thinks they can help take a look. For a real speedup though we would need the pocketnes emulator core. The 6502 processor in pocketnes is hand optimized asm code for the arm7 and it runs at full speed on the gameboy. The only problem with the code is that it was compiled using ARM SDT 2.5 which has different syntax than gcc. So if anyone is willing to help me convert it to gcc we should have a full speed NES emulator.

March 14th, 2007, 19:02 Posted By: wraggster
EA Mobile boss Javier Ferreira has told GamesIndustry.biz that the phone is essential to uniting communities of players and the home consoles they currently play.
After establishing a real presence in the mobile market during 2006, EA Mobile's focus for 2007 centres around using the handset to bring together consumers playing titles over multiple home formats.
"It's about how to take advantage of an evolving platform to deliver better games," said Javier Ferreira, VP of European publishing for EA Mobile.
"There's a lot of work to be done by all the players in this industry towards unleashing the connectivity which mobile can offer us – and from EA's perspective to link franchises and different versions of a game across formats."
"The community focused component is going to be about how the consumer is playing The Sims on mobile, and how they communicate and speak with the people playing The Sims on DS, PC or PlayStation 3," detailed Ferreira.
The publisher is keen to take advantage of mobile's unique strengths rather than simply rely on the basic idea of porting popular franchises to yet another format. Key to this, says Ferreira, are the opportunities provided by community features.
"For Electronic Arts, mobile is a gaming platform but it's also a media channel. And that's an exciting thing," commented Ferreira.
"It's about empowering the base. Historically, especially in the telecomms industry, people have tried to build a community from the top – stating that this is what the community is going to be about, telling them what they are going to do."
"But consumers don't like that. The key to a community is aggregating a number of people around a common interest – something simple like The Sims or Battlefield – these properties that generate a lot of community interest, and then giving those people the tools and ability to build the house that they want."
Ferreira pointed out that providing community support is difficult technically, and that it has to be built from the ground up in order to evolve.
"From a technology and development point of view it's much more complex, because suddenly I don't have to worry about building one house but a number of different people building their own house exactly how they want it."
"But if you look at the communities that are working in the internet space, those are the ones that are successful. It's about building things from the bottom," he concluded.

Finally someone is saying something about Apples glossy plastic sony methods.
check it:
Already under pressure from several European countries, at least one high ranking official at the European Union has lashed out against Apple's closed iPod/iTunes music ecosystem.
According to German weekly magazine Focus, EU consumer chief Meglena Kuneva is publicly questioning Apple's iTunes: "Do you think it's fine that a CD plays in all CD players but that an iTunes song only plays in an iPod? I don't. Something has to change,"
EU Consumer Protection Commissioner Kuneva was quoted as saying in a preview of an interview to be published on Monday,
- according to Reuters.

I'm not really in the loop about this Chris Pirillo guy.
He seems nice enough and he is certainly a Windows user.
But he has been calling Microsoft's Bluff with their latest crapWare: Vista.
And from that, many disgruntled WindowsVista PROs / overweight-bald-bloggers-in-a-cubicle have been firing back at him... And one Mac user who is attempting to bribe him over to OS X.
Talk about Brand loyalty.

I am completley impressed with Dim3 so far.
Honestly my intel macbook and older G4 PPC in my living room have been seeing a lot of Arcade and console Emu-time.
Add in the ability to make my own weird Games...see ya later "next gen".

"dimension3 is a 3D game "without content." This engine is aimed directly at two groups:
Mod Makers
Mod makers have done wonderful things with other engines, but they are extending an engine that was basically designed for a single game. Dim3 is the opposite ... an engine designed for all games!
These people can just download the binary and change almost everything about the engine from scripts and editors. In this way, they can make any number of games, for example:
* first-person shooter
* 3D adventure game
* 2D side scroller
* top-down RPG
* driving and racing
* network battles
... or many other types of game.
Coders
dim3 is open source, so anybody that wants to tinker with the actual code can do so. dim3 is designed to be completely changed without ever touching the code, but those that want to can dive in."

According to Harvard Business School professor David Yoffie, Apple has generated a scant $400 million in free iPhone advertising since its announcement (granted, at least $200 million of that was from Gizmodo alone). He explained:
No other company has ever received that kind of attention for a product launch...It's unprecedented
I doubt that the iPhone announcement drew society's attention more than, say, RCA's first color television or Phillips' first VCR. But given the greater size and spread of media today, I guess that "unprecedented" is still no exaggeration.

It looks like those legions of iPod owners who have been taking Apple's advice to hold off on upgrading to Vista can finally dust off their month-old DVD cases and get their upgrade on, as iTunes 7.1 has officially been released with "a number" of the compatibility issues accounted for. According to the release notes, however, a few known problems still remain, with the most serious being the nasty possibility that your iPod gets corrupted when you go by the book and select "Safely Remove Hardware" from the taskbar to, um, safely remove your hardware. Instead, users are advised to choose "Eject iPod" from the iTunes Control menu or "Restore" if they're reading this just a little too late. Other remaining quirks include sporadic address book syncs, messed up text and graphics (resizing the window should do the trick), and annoyingly, continued lack of support for any 64-bit editions of Windows, be it XP or Vista. Meanwhile, in other news, the ten Zune owners who also rock a Mac are still waiting patiently for Microsoft to acknowledge their existence.

March 6th, 2007, 17:22 Posted By: wraggster
The mobile games industry has matured greatly in the last three years, with publishers now far more aware of what consumers want from the space - with the challenge now being to apply that knowledge to their products.
That's according to Nokia's head of global game sales, Antoine Doumenc, who was speaking exclusively with GamesIndustry.biz at the GDC Mobile event in San Francisco this week.
"Three years ago there weren't enough professional people in the mobile games industry," Doumenc commented. "It's different today. EA Mobile, Gameloft, Glu Mobile - all of these publishers understand the market really well, and the industry itself has matured. We know need to turn that understanding into real products."
He believes that the N-Gage platform, which Nokia championed in its keynote at GDC Mobile yesterday, will play a key role in taking that next step - both in terms of giving publishers more freedom to innovate and more confidence in assigning large budgets to mobile projects, and in terms of providing a mark of quality for consumers.
"These publishers have the know how to create some fantastic games. But in terms of the set-up, the mobile business just hasn't been good enough - the fragmentation, the development costs, tools and so on have delayed the industry," Doumenc explained.
"Through learning with the first N-Gage we've managed to build up an ecosystem that can be relied on, it's predictable and publishers can manage costs and also have the brand recognition that comes with it. With all of this taken care of on their behalf, publishers can now afford to take more of a creative risk and develop more games with a better return of investment."

March 6th, 2007, 17:21 Posted By: wraggster
Jonathan Epstein, the CEO of in-game advertising firm Double Fusion, has warned that a different approach is needed when it comes to placing adverts in games for mobile phones.
Epstein's comments came during a panel discussion titled The New Era of Mobile Games: Advertising and Sponsorship at GDC Mobile, which began today.
He told the audience that Double Fusion is now looking to broaden its penetration into the mobile market, adding, "The reason we're here and we're involved is that we can see that, looking at sales figures, more and more of the sales of mobile games have been coming year after year for the companies that are officially leaders in publishing games in perhaps other sectors.
"Typically we've noticed that publishers look for single point solutions so that they can offer advertisers, through one company, the entire franchise."
Epstein went on to observe that although there are healthy revenues to be earned from mobile in-game advertising, an understanding of how the PC and console markets differ is essential.
"I don't really see a place for in-game ads in the way that we do in videogames in the mobile world... There are some remarkable parallels to the way advertisers market with videogames, but there are also some remarkable differences," he said.
"I've certainly seen demos of textured mapping and the screen's just too small."
According to Epstein, "it's more about reach in the mobile games environment than it is in the videogames environment. [Videogames] are much more well-fleshed out, bigger entertainment productions, so you're selling on the value of making an emotional connection and a deeper game experience".
However, Epstein was optimistic with regard to the opportunities in the mobile market as it changes over time. "I'm sure we'll see further work being developed; these are new media," he said.
"The cellphone has this tremendous response capability. I don't think we can hold a $30 CPM rate over time, but I think you can really build a tremendous economic based on follow-on action, which is something that the videogame market doesn't really do often."

With exception of Snake, the odd golf game and, of course, Sonic the Hedgehog, mobile phone games are generally rubbish. But that could change.
The 'Using Touch, Sight and Gesture in Mobile Games' Keynote at GDC today, headed up by Developer Paul Coulton, demonstrated some interesting new tech to be utilised by mobiles games of the future.
Motion-sensing technology was pointed out as a key factor for the development of mobile games, with ball-tilting and driving applications demonstrated, according to Next-Gen.biz.
"The possibilities are endless with this technology. It's about thinking of new ways to play games, that might be played by very different people than we are used to," commented Coultron.
"Wii has had an amazing impact but this technology in mobile phones could ultimately be even more dramatic."
More interestingly, the use of mobile phone cameras in games was also discussed, suggesting that they could be used to 'aim and shoot' in-game targets using the real world.
We're trying to get our heads around that one - but it involves more than just taking a picture of your face and putting it onto an in-game character, so we're intrigued.
Maybe mobile games will actually be, dare we say, good in the near future.

March 5th, 2007, 17:21 Posted By: wraggster
New press release:
Nokia, the world leader in mobile communications, today announced the latest games and publishers for its new N-Gage mobile gaming platform. Updated software development tools for the N-Gage platform and a new testing program for SNAP Mobile’s JavaTM platform were also introduced today at the conference. These new developments will help bring fun to play connected mobile gaming experiences to millions of Nokia mobile device owners worldwide.
“We are reinforcing our commitment to this industry with two significant initiatives that will help the mobile games industry evolve. Our N-Gage platform will deliver a global games platform that leverages the performance of the tens of millions of S60 converged devices that we are shipping each year,” said Gregg Sauter, Director of Games Publishing, Nokia. “Likewise, our support for Java development continues to evolve with more tools for developers supporting SNAP Mobile.”
Sauter will expand on these new developments with a speech at the GDC Mobile sponsored lunch keynote session on Monday 5th March at 1.00pm in Room 134 in the North Hall, Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco. The session, titled ‘The next generation of the N-Gage platform’ will also be available at http://www.forum.nokia.com/gdc and http://www.forum.nokia.com/games later in the week.
New game titles and brands
Nokia introduced a range of games for the new mobile gaming platform including Gameloft’s Asphalt 3, Street Rules, Brothers In Arms, Hell’s Highway, Brain Challenge, Midnight Pool and EA Mobile’s FIFA 2008.
New games publishers on board
Games publishers Glu Mobile, Indiagames and THQ Wireless will be publishing a selection of mobile games and content for the N-Gage games platform. The first Glu title for the platform will be World Series of Poker® Texas Hold’em (WSOP), which allows players to compete at tables with up to eight mobile gamers against WSOP champions such as Chris "Jesus" Ferguson and Scott Fischman.
Latest tools to develop next generation mobile content
Nokia also launched its next generation software development kit (SDK 1.0) for the new N-Gage games platform, which enables developers to focus on one code-base to create social connected games across a range of Nokia S60 3rd edition devices. The new N-Gage Zone provides all the tools, documentation, support and updates required to successfully develop games for the N-Gage games platform.
“The availability of the N-Gage SDK 1.0 today is the corner stone of Nokia’s new development eco-system for developers to create connected mobile games in a familiar C++ environment,” said Mark Ollila, Director of Technology & Strategy and Nokia Games Publishing, Nokia. “This single development channel impacts positively on development cycles and budgeting as well as creating new social connected gaming experiences that will lead the way to how people discover, buy and play games in the future.”

press release:
Nokia, the world leader in mobile communications and Indiagames, India’s leading mobile game publisher, announced today that Indiagames will be bringing a selection of their mobile game brands to the N-Gage platform.
“Indiagames is a leading force for driving mobile gaming in Asia and the rest of the world, and it’s great to work with a team that has such a global perspective,” said Gregg Sauter, Director of Games Publishing, Nokia. “Indiagames has a great range of content and more importantly, a fantastic understanding of what Asian consumers want out of their mobile gaming experiences.”
“Working with Nokia on the N-Gage platform is a great opportunity for us to deliver great content for a global audience,” said Vishal Gondal, CEO, Indiagames. “We believe in Nokia’s vision of making it easy for people to find and buy high-quality mobile games and we are excited to bring some of our well-known brands to the N-Gage.” Gondal further adds, “Our games have been well received in markets across the world. Our association with Nokia would make access to them easier and take them to a much wider audience. We believe that there has been a great void in the experiential gaming space and that the new N-Gage platform would effectively address this and hence make mobile games entertaining and accessible to consumers.”
As part of its association with Nokia, Indiagames plans to introduce a variety of games across genres that would appeal to mobile gamers of all skill sets.
