Jonz has released a new version of his Nes Emulator for the iPhone:
NES.app lets you play Nintendo games on your iPhone. It is a fully functional, feature-rich Nintendo emulator.
NES.app uses an emulator core we call NESCore, which we've forked from pNESx and InfoNES and re-engineered as a highly-portable and high-performance Nintendo emulator core.
In order to use NES.app, you will need ROM images of Nintendo games. ROM images are files containing the dumped instruction code from a physical cartridge. In many cases, you are legally entitled to posess a ROM imageof any game that you presently own. ROM images for NES are widely available online, or with the appropriate hardware, you can dump them yourself directly from the cartridge.
Features
Multitouch: Use the directional pad + A + B, or other combinations
Landscape Mode: Turn the iPhone counter-clockwise to play in landscape mode
Zapper Tap: Tap objects on the screen to shoot them
Full Screen: Enlarge your NES picture to the max possible
Save State: Save an instant snapshot of your game and come back to it later
Game Genie: Use Game Genie cheat codes
... and many more
NES.app is not iPhoneNES!
NES.app started as a fork of iPhoneNES v0.01, but has been completely rewritten to run very fast, and with many additional features including sound, multitouch support, full-screen, landscape mode, game genie codes, saved games and much more. It now contains zero code from the original iPhoneNES project.
2.0.4 [jonz] Updated for 1.1.3 (runs under 'mobile' user)
Everything is now under /var/mobile

YouTube has announced an official mobile client application for a number of handsets including several S60 phones. The application allows you to watch any YouTube video and offers browsing by popular videos (most viewed, top rated, featured), related videos or keyword search. You are able to sign into your YouTube account and access your own videos, subscriptions and favourites. The application also allows you to upload video from your phone to YouTube directly.
The application allows you to browse through the massive number of videos on YouTube. Browsing is via video lists which are accessed via keyword search or by the popular video lists (as found on the mobile and PC sites). Video lists are shown in a carousel list similar to that used in S60's Gallery application. Each video is presented with a small thumbnail and related descriptive information.
The client application provides an impressively rich experience and a good effort has been made to retain the look and feel of the website version - the same terminology, and graphics are used. If you use YouTube.com regularly you should feel right at home. The client application is written in Java which may not give the same performance as a native application (I noticed a few slow downs in my initial tests) and has a non-standard UI (like Google's GMail client application) which is not ideal in terms of providing a consistent experience across the phone.
Because the application is obviously heavily reliant on a data connection you should be wary of using it unless you are on a flat rate data tariff (video streaming can add up to a lot of data very quickly). You will also get the best performance in areas with 3G coverage.
The client uses RealPlayer internals to do the video streaming (you may need to set up your access point settings in RealPlayer to get streaming to work). The video is in .3gp format and is lower quality that the video you get through the website. You'll get a better video quality if you use one of the third party YouTube clients such as emTube.
The client application may also work on other phones, but there are no guarantees. Stefan an IntoMobile notes you can use this link for a direct download (N95 version, should work with most recent S60 phones). Officially supported phones are Nokia's N73, N95, E65, 6110, 6120 and Sony Ericsson's K800 and W880.

via Games Industry
In a presentation at the Mobile Games Forum, the latest statistics revealed by research company M:Metrics points towards a continued slow growth for mobile phone game downloads.
While 87.7 per cent of the UK population owns a handset – around 46.5 million people – only 4.8 per cent of them download games, and that figure drops to 3.3 per cent in the US.
However, while almost a quarter of people do play mobile games on a monthly basis, the vast majority are pre-loaded titles.
The presentation, by the company's senior analyst Paul Goode, also noted that there was steady growth in 3G service take up across Europe, and also in the penetration into the market of Symbian or Windows-based smartphones.
Additionally Sony Ericsson handsets were the most popular game-playing devices, something that he noted could be down to the demographic that chooses that brand – although only 20 per cent of mobile phone gamers are under 24 years old.
The research, taken from a sample size of around 15,000 in the three months to November 2007, also found that female customers were narrowly more likely to purchase games while male users were more likely to download, and far more likely to trial games.
Action and sports titles accounted for 70 per cent of mobile games represented on carrier decks, despite only taking 30 per cent of actual consumption.
Goode pointed out that this indicated more needed to be done on researching which titles should be placed prominently on the decks, although he did concede that it may be partly due to some other genre titles that significantly over perform, as well as franchise and promotional activity.
The most popular titles for female gamers included quiz games, arcade puzzles and strategy games, while males were more drawn towards sports and shooter titles.
The trend for consolidation in the industry has continued in the past twelve months, with key publishers taking a higher proportion of industry revenues then previously, with EA Mobile, I-Play, Gameloft and Glu Mobile among the top companies by market share.
The Mobile Games Forum 2008, organised by Osney Media, is taking place from January 23-24 at the Sofitel St James hotel in London.

Gizmondo, a handheld gaming system released by Tiger Telematics in 2005, is returning this year according to a new website.
The original handheld wasn't widely available in either the UK or the US and was discontinued within a year. The company received more attention for an executive's ties to organised crime than for the system itself.
A video on the new website touts an "open source environment" as well as a "Gizmondo live marketplace" and "exciting psychic worlds." The promise that players will be able to create their own games suggests that the focus will be on user-created content.
No further details were provided, only that Gizmondo will be rising again in 2008 and will "democratise gaming."
The original Gizmondo had two separate price points depending upon whether or not smart ads were enabled on the handheld. It was sold primarily through Gizmondo's own website.

During the Apple earnings call today, the company suggested that WiFi-enabled iPods were "one" of the future directions in which Cupertino sees the media player market heading. While sticking to vague characterizations, a spokesperson intimated that wireless communication would play a role in upcoming devices (as demonstrated in the iPod touch), saying, "The iPod market is bigger than just for simple music players, one of the iPod's future direction is to be one of the first WiFi mobile platforms." Of course, Apple wasn't ready to put all its eggs in one basket, nor did it mention emerging wireless technologies such as WiMAX, but they're probably confident that customers will take it where they can get it.

Remember that formal announcement of Lotus Notes Mail on the iPhone? Right, Apple's first big corporate iPhone push which the AP said would happen at LotusSphere? Not going to happen, at least not yet. An IBM spokesperson told ZDNet Australia, "It's not something that (is) ready to go out and market or launch." In other words, Jobs heard about IBM's plan to steal his February SDK-launch thunder and shut down the announcement right quick. The most absurd part of all this has to be an enterprise adoption comment made by the so-called analyst, Kevin McIsaac, at IBRS (I be arse?). He said, "I can't really imagine someone who's really hip and cool -- like an iPhone user -- wanting to use Lotus Notes." Since when do the personal desires of users and corporate IT policy have anything in common Kev?

Oh cruel, cruel word... is it true? A teaser site for Gizmondo just appeared in the fetid bowels of the Internets boasting that the "legend is reborn." A cruel hoax or has Stefan Eriksson, freshly sprung from the clink, really teamed up with former accomplice Carl Freer in a bid to resurrect Gizmondo as the Swedish press claims? If true, the service is set for a Christmas 2008 launch with the promise of a "Gizmondo Live Marketplace" presumably chock-full of open source games running on a supposed $100 device. Will it really "democratize gaming?" Hardly. No worries though, we'll be too busy checking out the "exciting psychic worlds" to notice.
Update: Ha, Gizmondo spared no expense with the teaser -- it's all yours for just $66 bucks over at TemplateMonster.

The well known and respected iPhone hacker Nate True has discovered some very, very interesting information concerning Apple's latest update, 1.1.3. According to Mr. True, the boys and girls in Cupertino have all but prepped the device's OS for native applications, altering the functionality of SpringBoard to display additional apps, changing the ownership of applications to a unified "mobile" user, and moving the location of preferences to the accompanying non-root directory. Additionally, SpringBoard now boasts widget support via a class called SBWidgetApplication. All of these technical and seemingly minor details will apparently make it easier for developers to create new applications for the phone, though Nate says they'll also break existing native apps in the process. All we ask is that developers get those NES and SNES emulators ported quickly and safely to the new system.

Robota Softwarehouse updated their version/port of "Go".
Release notes:
We had a lot of email from people claiming they have ‘fatty’ fingers and cannot play the 19 x 19 board. Many suggestions have been given to improve the placing of the pieces on the tiny board (thanks!). After experimenting we have chosen to implement the zoom/scroll function and a quick way to undo the last move (including the opponents move). Last but not least the game supports stepping through a loaded game.
About 2% of application is paid so please don’t forget to donate if you like the game!

The guys at cre.ations.net posted an interesting article about the recent 1.1.3 Firmware for iPhone's.
Read on:
So I've had the chance to examine the 1.1.3 firmware on a deeper level (using a technique not developed by me and which I can't release so don't ask) and have noticed some interesting changes behind the scenes that are quite blogworthy:
- SpringBoard no longer needs to be modified (via SummerBoard) in order to show extra applications in the /Applications folder.
- All applications now run as the user 'mobile' instead of as root.
- Preferences are now stored in /var/mobile rather than in /var/root.
What does this all mean? I'll tell you what it means.
The iPhone 1.1.3 firmware is ready for official installable applications.

Converter is an unit converter for iPhone.
Changes:
Fixed 1.0.2 compatibility issue.
Fixed fuel consumption conversion issues.
Finally I've managed to merge results from two different currency rate providers, and now missing currencies (Fiji dollars, Bulgaria Leva, etc.) are back. Make sure to refresh your rates (from Settings screen) to get the updated data.

Ah yes. Ogg Vorbis music files and the freeware OggPlay. I've still got a soft spot for them, even if the rest of the world seems to have largely ignored the format. But never mind, because, better late than never, OggPlay for S60 3rd Edition is now fully available. Do make sure you read the notes about skins, and note that installation is a two stage process.
