MNPlight aims at getting rid of the need for a computer with iTunes. It runs on your iPhone, and is able to modify the iPhone calendar, address book and iPod databases.
MNPlight can be of particular interest for Linux users who don't have iTunes, but it can also be used by other users when they want to update their iPhone data when they are away from their iTunes computer.
If you keep using iTunes, you may experiment problems with the Calendar and the Address Book since modifications done on your iPhone won't be seen by iTunes. http://movenplay.gforge.inria.fr/

TangledBugs is a remake of the good old Untangle game !
Nothing special in this version, just the arcade mode for now : start by untangling 6 bugs, then 10, 15, 20, etc... Until you give up !
This is still a WIP version, an update should come soon with highscores and level selection screen.
For those who find the lower levels a bit too easy, press Ok/Enter (depending on your PDA) to skip a level...

Shift is a bit hard to take in hands on the first go, but once you pick it up you just can't stop playing...
The rules are really basic : click on the left, right, upper, or lower part of the screen (or press the direction pad) to have all the blocks who can move in that direction... If you form groups of 3 or more blocks, they'll disappear, etc...
To get huge scores, trying doing combos, not leaving a single round before exploding another group, etc... Easier said than done !

Old school and new school clash as Sega announces the original Sonic the Hedgehog now available for play on the latest batch of iPods. For $4.99 on the iTunes Store you can download and play the classic platformer on your iPod Nano with video, iPod Classic, or fifth generation iPod. What, no iPhone?
"Sonic The Hedgehog is one of the most beloved video game characters of all time," said Simon Jeffery, President and COO of SEGA of America, "And with the installed base that iPod enjoys Sonic now becomes available to a whole new group of casual and hardcore gamers just in the time for the holidays."
Unfortunately I only have a crappy little white 2GB Nano, so I'll just have to rely on one of the 20,000 other things I have laying around my house that are capable of playing the game. *sigh*

Sebastian Jedruszkiewicz has released the first version of emTube, a freeware YouTube client application and FlashVideo player. emTube allows you to browse (by search, by featured video, by top rated videos and by most viewed videos), view and download YouTube videos or play back a locally stored file. It is an impressively polished application for a first release and is the best YouTube / FlashVideo solution for S60 phones I have seen thus far. Read on for screenshots and more details.
emTube allows you to easily access any YouTube video and have it playing back on your phone in a matter of seconds.
Two version are currently available from the emTube version - one is specifically for the N95 and takes advantage of the built in accelerometer to automatically rotate videos into full screen mode when you turn the phone. I've no doubt this will be a popular application and it is a great way to demo the power of an open software platform phone to family and friends down the pub.
The application runs on all S60 3rd Edition phones, but you may find that real-time video playback is not possible on older devices. More recent devices such as the E65, N93 and N95 should work fine. I tested the application on the N95, there were a few stutters, but generally the video was smooth, and is one of the best mobile FlashVideo player implementation, in terms or quality, that I have seen. emTube allows you to watch videos as they are downloading, after an initial pause for buffering you can start playing the video as the rest of it downloads.
Aside from the basic video browsing and viewing functions there's an impressive level of functionality in emTube considering this is a first release. You can download a video to your phone's internal memory or memory card. emTube can be used to play back locally stored flash video files. You can also add a video to your favourites list as a way to quickly get back to videos you want to watch later.
From the search page it is possible to access all the user videos of the currently selected video and you can also view videos related to the currently selected video. You can also view the video details which includes a variety of information including title, author, duration, view count and average rating.
The application also operates perfectly in landscape mode. Videos can be played back in landscape ('full screen') mode. The N95 version the application will use the accelerometer to automatically rotate the video (and put it into full screen mode) when you turn the phone. It is a neat touch and is typical of the thought that has been put into this application. For other phones there is a menu entry (or press '1' for a keyboard shortcut) that does the same thing.
It also great to the author put together a comprehensive website and PDF documentation for the application. This is something I would like to see more of for freeware applications.
Plans for future versions include the ability to upload videos to YouTube, the ability to view and add comments to videos, support for additional video codecs, speed optimizations and support for DailyMotion (another video site similar to YouTube).
The application has made use of Symbian PIPS to port part of ffmpeg to the Symbian platform. It is used to decode the video (H.263) for playback. This is one of the first mainstream uses (application likely to be popular and widely used) of Symbian PIPs that we've seen in a publicly released application.
Developers may also like to note that the source code for the video element of this application, libavcodec and libavutil (part of ffmpeg) is available on the authors website.
emYube is available as freeware, but the author asks for donations if you like the application, please do your part.

Hollywood's classic Film Noir world creates an atmospheric backdrop for this story-driven detective game. Dirk Spanner and the Fallen Idol by Nokia Games Publishing brings classic detective gaming onto mobile devices with unique twists and turns around every corner.
Set in the stylish, yet seedy fictional city of New Haven, Dirk Spanner and the Fallen Idol comes to life through its comic book ambiance. Gripping yet funny stories of conflicts, romance and deception with plenty of movie stars, rip-offs, double-crosses, wigs and moustaches make this an entertaining game that will engage novices through to the most experienced game players.
"Dirk Spanner and the Fallen Idol will re-introduce the long forgotten detective game genre for mobile devices," said Dr Mark Ollila, Director of Technology and Strategy and Head of Games Publishing, Nokia. "With the combination of stunning visuals and enthralling storylines, players cannot help but be spellbound by this game."
Featuring Dirk as the lead private eye, players are propelled into mysterious adventures, battling an array of femme fatales and gangsters. From solving the mystery of a stolen statue and a brutal murder, to uncovering the case of an accidental penguin-related death, Dirk will not rest until the case is solved.
Players guide Dirk through mysterious assignments using the unique one-button, camera-based controls, giving players an intuitive way of exploring the city of New Haven. A jazzy soundtrack helps set the mood for each stage of the game.
Dirk Spanner and the Fallen Idol is expected to be available in the first half of 2008.

The news are from November, but I just want to tell it to you people, since it wasn't posted before. And it is sad, even I considered to buy this old handheld because it was cheap and it had online games.
via N-Gage official forum
Well guys. I think you all knew it was coming sooner or later, but I wanted to officially announce it here in the N-Gage community. As hinted on the past few weeks and as mentioned in the announcments, In order to prepare the new and improved backend servers and databases for the Next Generation launch, the old Arena game servers and arena features will be shutting down on Dec. 5th @10am PST. After this date, the Arena features of the old N-Gage games will no longer be available.
It's been a long run, and i'm sure you know if there was anyway we (and/or redrum) could have kept up the old arena servers we would have, but they are running on some old backend technology, and also with the way the new Next Generation architecure is built, there was no way for us to keep the old arena games and its functionality running without allowing for us to improve upon the next generation backend performance and make it the best and fastest it can be this time around.
When the next generation launches, not only will I be looking to you veterans of the N-Gage to help debug the launch, but as always we value your expertise, opinions, and comments, so please take some time to fill out this quick Next Generation N-Gage Survey.

Well hello there, never-before-seen-device bearing the mylo name, nice to meet you. We can only assume by your camera-equipped backside (and your designation as the "COM-2") that you're the mylo 2 we'd heard rumors about -- but no thanks to the tight-lipped FCC, we don't know much more than the fact that you'll be one-upping your predecessor by tacking 802.11g onto its b. Still, now that we've got you in our sights, the rest of your specs can't remain secret for long.

O sweet jeebus, could it be? Why yes, that's the "stylish plastic enclosure" promised for the partfoundry GPS module iPhone hack. At least, it's the first rendered appearance. Initially peeped over at Engadget Mobile on Friday, the newly named locoGPS module requires a Jail Broken iPhone to work. A new video shows the SiRF Star III chip doing its positional thing in support of Google Maps. The $89 hack remains on track for a February 2008 release -- you know, around the time when the official SDK launches and presumably... hopefully, an official iPhone GPS module is announced.

Finally! Apple has added the capability to allow users to create their own ringtones in GarageBand and export them to the iPhone. You need to have the latest 4.1.1 version of GarageBand 8 running. It takes about 5 minutes from start to finish, and you can even use songs from your iTunes library.
It really is stupid easy. Granted, this is something I did back in the 1.0.0 firmware days with an unlocked iPhone, but it was not sanctioned and required jailbreaking your iPhone first. Hacking ringtones is officially a thing of the past.
Here's the process.
Connect your iPhone. Open GarageBand. Create a track using Apple's loops or compose an entire song on your own. (The possibilities are sort of endless here and opens the floodgates for highly inappropriate ringtones.) Click on the "Share" tab, and under it is a selection called "Send Ringtone to iTunes". Click that, and it lets you select a 10-second loop of your track, mixes it, and sends it to iTunes. Once you've done that, simply sync your iPhone and voila! You've created your own ringtone.
After you sync, you can go into the iPhone's settings and choose the newly added ringtone as your ringer. It appears in a separate list from the official Apple ringtones, called "Custom."
At first, I used an existing song I was working on in GarageBand. The 10-second loop sounds pretty good as a ringtone, but I decided it would be more fun to choose something from my iTunes library.
With GarageBand open, I went into my music folders and dragged a song into the GarageBand track editor. It imported the song with no issues. I then picked a 10-second loop of that song (a killer riff from Lamb of God's Sacrament CD) and repeated the process above. It worked just the same. I was able to use a song from my iTunes music library and create a ringtone out of it for free. No silly extra charge.

Market statistician Net Applications says on its Web site that Apple iPhones currently account for .09 percent of Web browsing, while all Windows Mobile devices put together accout for only .06 percent. That's pretty astonishing, given the relative numbers of handheld devices running each OS in the marketplace.
Those numbers are truly low. Given the total volume of Web page retrievals the difference between nine one-hundredths of 1 percent and six one-hundredths of a percent stats is a gnat's eyelash. But Net Applications finds them persuasive, and they confirm a conclusion I came to last summer when I wrote a piece on browsing the Web on a smartphone: it works a lot better on an iPhone than it does on a Windows Mobile handheld.
Another report published last week by Daniel Dilger in his "Roughly Drafted" blog claims that iPhone is also outselling all Windows Mobile devices combined in the U.S. market (but, to be sure, still trailsRIM (NSDQ: RIMM)'s BlackBerry).
Dilger cites statistics from analyst firm Canalys that I can't find on the Web, and his blog is a little too consistently kind to Apple, but his piece does make interesting reading. And his stats are supported by analyst firm NPD, which recently calculated that the iPhone held 27 percent of the smartphone market in the U.S. (and the smartphone market has almost tripled over the past year to hold 11 percent of all mobile phone sales, which is also astonishing growth.)
If all these statistics are reliable, it just could be that Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) is losing out in the growth market for mobile operating systems. Whatever the numbers, Microsoft isn't about to be put out of business. Net Applications says 78.3 percent of all Web browsing in the U.S. is done from devices running Windows XP, while Apple OSes, whether Intel-based, Power PC or iPhone, account for just 6.9. But the mobile market certainly doesn't seem to be going Microsoft's way – and Google's Android looks like it will only make the fight tougher.

True, the tantalizing rumor of a TomTom GPS for the iPhone suffered a rather untimely demise, but not to worry -- as a navigation aid, we figure the iPhone's sizable touchscreen and dock connector just make too much sense for a GPS solution to not get willed into existence. Engineering firm partfoundry is taking a real (as in, confirmed) stab at developing a custom, purpose-built GPS module that slots into the iPhone's port, delivering 16 channels of satellite reception to the software of your choice. Notice the "of your choice" there -- it looks like partfoundry will be requiring jailbreaked phones and relying on the developer community to serve up apps capable of processing the module's output and making use of it. The current plan is to get these bad boys out of the door in February, though they're taking orders now for $89. Oh, and don't worry, there are plans for a "stylish plastic enclosure" to bring the 1337 hax0r appearance down a notch or three.
