Hi all today i got my hands on the JXD301 a games console/Media player thats buzzing in the homebrew scene at the moment. Heres my review of the JXD301.
Foreword
I am not an expert on anything even though i webmaster one of the biggest homebrew sites, i am infact a fan just like most others and more of a noobie than an expert, if i dont know i ask, so from me youll get a review in a way that as long as it works then im happy, i am no expert so you wont get a massively technical explanation youll get a straight yes or no.
What is the JXD301 ?
Heres the description:
The JXD 301 boasts a 3.0" LTPS TFT display making it a premier portable media player. It supports many audio files such as MP3, WMA, FLAC and video files such as RMVB, FLV and AVI files. The JXD 301 has the ability to play NES, SNES, SMD, GBC, GBA and Neo Geo games. Being about the same size as the GBA Micro, The JXD 301 is a great little device to bring around for your entertainment needs.

Ordering and Delivery
I ordered my JXD301 from USA retailer GP2XStore.com (who sell a lot more than just GP2X). The order was dealt with within the hour and was shipped the same day which was very impressive, nothing worse than ordering and waiting weeks for the console. Shipping and the console were at a good price too, even more so with the weak dollar .
My parcel was delivered by EMS and i had no Customs Charges something which pleases me no end and even though it was the festive season it arrived within 4 days, yet another plus.
Opening the Packaging
The console comes in a box which tells you what it does etc but no mention of emulators most likely to avoid customs etc. The console itself is a similiar size to a GBA Micro although thinner. In the box was a soft case for the console, Headphones, USB Lead, USB Adapter, Driver Disc, Manual and Worldwide Compatible Power Lead (you just need a shaver plug in the UK).
The Review Itself
Turning on the JXD301 reveals what must be the best GUI on any handheld system ive ever played, its so user friendly and easy to use, plenty of options to change, bright and cheery. A major thumbs up so far.
Connecting the system to my laptop via USB cable was an horrid experiance it just wouldnt work at all, i then went to my PC and it connected straight away, godknows why this happened, but i wasnt happy with it.
I then tried some roms and movies on the console and to my surprise the movies played quite well infact i enjoyed watching heroes on the jxd301 so much that ive got 6 episodes on now
On the rom side of things GBA Emulation was a waste of time, sure it booted up but was as slow as hell.
Nes emulation was much better infact quite decent.
Snes emulation was amazing with sound on its crap but the speed was very very nice. I did find the controls a tad strange without L and R buttons.
GB/GBC emulation seemed to be crappy, whatever emulator they ported over didnt work well at all, low compatability and no sound.
Megadrive emulation was also nice enough but sound is rubbish luckily the games play reasoably well.
NeoGeo emulation is also a plus for the console, roms need to be with a .neo extension
The Ebook reader also seemed pretty decent and because i love my harry potter ebooks its great to read when i feel like it
Battery time for me lasted about 4 hours ive heard its supposed to be a lot more but thats what i got out of the system.
Conclusion
The JXD301 is a nice console/media player for the price, it has a nice built in battery and 2GB hard drive and the build quality and display on the screen are very good. The GUI is simply the nicest on any console in my opinion, For movies your going to have to try and see what works best for you in terms of encoded quality, the tv shows i tried ran decent although an adult film i tried was a fraction slow but in some ways that was a benefit
On the emulation side of things Snes and Nes with Neogeo trailing were passable but not awesome. GBA was a waste of space and GB/GBC and Megadrive need a lot of work.
But for the price and with some excellent coders already working on the console this could be the budget emulation console of the year. The lack of buttons even though its a fairly powerful machine mean for purists this wont do but for people who play now and again and for collectors of retro consoles then its well worth a try.
Ill give the console a score of 6.8 out of 10 - Lets pray that the homebrew scene can support this console

A small but interesting morsel from the folks at Projectnext.eu: If you have the latest version of Nokia PC Suite installed, and rename any file using the extension .n-gage it will automatically adopt a Nokia application icon, and right-clicking on it will bring up an option to install it. This option doesn't work of course, but the fact that it appears implies that PC Suite has already been designed with the Next Gen N-Gage platform in mind.

Hello from ZodTTD!
As I had said in the beginning of the psx4iphone project, I would be working on another Sony Playstation 1 emulator alongside it. This upcoming emulator should increase performance quite a lot over the current psx4iphone. This upcoming emulator is being lead by Hlide, a very talented programmer. He even contributed some of the generator of the psx4all project’s dynamic recompiler!
Now it’s time for me to return the favor and help him bring his project to ARM platforms such as the iPhone. Hlide’s project is titled yapse4all (YAPSE- Yet Another PlayStation Emulator) and though in it’s early stages, it shows so much promise that I would like to bring some of his framework and dynarec over to psx4all. Since yapse4all currently lacks important device emulation such as the Graphics Processing Unit, Sound Processing Unit, and etc., I am able to extend yapse4all into psx4iphone. It would help Hlide by getting the ARM implementation completed, and help me by improving the core of psx4iphone. Eventually yapse4all will be in a more complete state, and could then maintain his own, more advanced, ARM arch which could take advantage of things currently not possible in psx4all such as threaded devices.
So basically if Hlide doesn’t mind this being done, soon psx4iphone could get a very large update due to his excellent work and my extension of it.
Lots of work to be done, but piece by piece it’s getting there!

This release is all about fixes to the NES code. I've made some structural changes to the 6502 which corrected a bunch of problems (e.g. Battletoads) and added a few mappers. A bunch of the fixes are due to removing some unsafe speed optimizations. The overall speed is still plenty fast, so it was worth doing. The new code now supports the following mappers: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 10, 11, 16, 19, 33, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 87, 93, 160, 180. Mappers 64, 65, 66, 232, and 116 appear to be supported as well. I've also fixed the NES load/save code, but the fix required that I change the SAV files. Please delete all of your old SAV files (the BAK files haven't changed, you can still use the old ones).

foft has ported his great Atari 800 emulator to the Gizmondo, heres the release info:
I know the Wince version "works", kind of. I also know TheReaperUK did a rainy day port, but... Well you can't have too many Atari800 ports can you? This one is a port of my GP2X one, which is a port of the GP32 one which is a port of the core Atari800... I don't plan to maintain this port, but will fix any obvious bugs people find in the short term (if I care about them, ask me here...).
Its for download as usual from: http://www.scrameta.net/a800.html.
Features (some are just flags, but highlight differences from other ports):
i) Automatic frame skip.
ii) Fairly flexible remappable inputs, with a little pain (text config...)
iii) Hifi Pokey works (but slower, with a few quirks... call it MidFi)
iv) Volume only sound - i.e. samples.
v) Onscreen keyboard (hold L+R shoulders)
vi) Fast forward (hold L shoulder)
vii) Paged attrib ram access - including XE bank switching. So Megablast works...
viii) Startup like this...
ix) Zip support (inc atz in zip.)
x) Png screenshots
xi) Cycle accurate color changes
Controls (default):
i) Dpad: Joystick 1
ii) Rewind : Fire
iii) Fast forward: Simple keyboard
iv) L shoulder : fast forward
vi) Play: Some 5200 options (It needs analog stick so sucks on digital stick, but can tweak some stuff here...)
vii) Home: UI
viii) Volume+Up: Volume up...
ix) Volume+Down: Volume down
x) L+R shoulder: onscreen keyboard
xi) Asterisk: Start
xii) Triangle: Select
xiii) Power: Option
xiv) Hold power+L+R: Reboot (easier in ui or fastfwd menu)
xv) Hold power+(L or R): Reset (easier in ui or fastfwd menu)
All these can be remapped in the Inputs/default.men and Inputs/ui.men files for use in emulator and in the menu...
To get it running extract and copy over the Atari800 dir. Then run Atari800.exe with whatever autorun you use... You need to put in atarixl.rom etc in the Atari800 dir. Also put some games in the ATR folder. Of course all this can be changed in the emulator configuration setting or editing atari800.cfg directly.
Thanks for this version go to:
i) Atari800 development team for a great emulator
ii) PocketAtari for the Wince code I ripped to shreds...
iii) Reesy for his nice sound ringbuffer idea.
iv) Wincesoft for their GAPI for Gizmondo.
v) TheReaperUK for help with the above GAPI and his port... Buy another Gizmondo!
Thanks,
Mark

So far, OpenMoko's Linux-based open source phones have amounted to little more than a twinkle in the eye of Joe Consumer, instead getting fast-tracked into the hands of developers who hope to make the whole package stable and functional enough for the average buyer to give a flip by the time they're widely available. We'd say that's a solid policy -- especially if these guys hope to fight the oncoming Android steamroller -- and the next volley is about to get fired in the form of the "Neo FreeRunner." The spiritual successor to the original Neo1973 (pictured), the FreeRunner is being billed as a "compelling mass market device" thanks to some key additions: WiFi, motion sensors, a faster 500MHz processor, and 3D graphics acceleration. OpenMoko's previewing the phone at CES next week with shipments following on to developers in the spring in two triband GSM versions, one with North America-friendly 850MHz and the other with 900MHz. Consumer sales are expected to happen after that (shortly after that, hopefully) once the dev community blesses it with solid code.

After playing the game for the past few days I fell upon a few bugs, so I just went on and fixed them...
The line crossing routine had a bug, a vertical and a horizontal line would often be detected as crossing even if they didn't... FIXED !
Also fixed a stupid bug : when selecting a level from the menu, it would always return to level 1 :/...
On a minor note, I put the same font for the timer, looks better (or not)...

Now that the startling mystery of VoIP has been cracked wide open on the iPod touch, it was only a matter of time before other, related mysteries were broken apart and inspected. One such case involves the process of getting the sound of your voice into the formerly-audio-out-only device, which must be accomplished via the use of some type of audio-in microphone dongle, which now -- thanks to one clever man -- has been hacked for VoIP-on-touch purposes. Using the hideous, yet cheap, Macally iVoiceIII audio recorder add-on for 5G iPods, and the simple soldering of a jumper to the board, you can be chatting away like a madman (provided you've got some WiFi) on your touch.

Phones aren't designed for games, and that's why most mobile phone games are rubbish (apart from the Doom RPG). But the age of truly terrible phone game controls could come to an end soon, as a Nunchuk-like controller for mobile phones has been given the go-ahead.
Peripheral company Zeetoo has created a dedicated gaming controller for mobiles, named the Zeemote, which hopes to make playing on your phone far better.
Using Bluetooth to connect to your phone, the device has an analogue stick, buttons on the reverse, all in a body that's shaped uncannily like the Wii Nunchuk controller.
Zeetoo even has a motion sensing version of the controller in the prototype phases, and another with a tracker ball. Motion-controlled tennis on a packed central London train should be interesting.
Zeetwo's analogue device already has the support of phone manufacturers Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and LG, and game developers Sega Mobile, Fishlabs and Reaxion (and others), and has secured $6.9 million funding (around £3.5m) to put the Zeemote into production, according to Pocket Gamer.
It sounds cool, but surely people who care enough about videogames to want a dedicated analogue controller will buy a DS (or five).
