Look, we're all about making fun of a nanny state trying to get us to drop our earbuds for street crossing, but we're also against stupidity and what Australian police call a problem of "epidemic proportions": teenagers dying from crossing the street while listening to an iPod. NSW Police commissioned these ads that we'd say make their point quite nicely -- and remind us of a contest submission from a while back. Obviously it's not the iPods doing these kids in, rather fast-moving hunks of metal and a near-idiotic lack of attentiveness, but if you're the absent minded type, perhaps unplugging your ears for street crossings would be a good habit to get into. Or you could, you know, look before you leap.

Well if you've been telling your buds your iPhone is totally virus free and safe, 'tis time to eat your words. Seems some incompetent 11-year old kid added an app to Installer sources that lists itself as "iPhone firmware 1.1.3 prep" -- we're calling it fail.trojan -- an update to Erica's Utilities. Though not too troublesome -- apparently only says "shoes" once installed -- it may well be the start of a whole new bag of fun for the inspired yet bored amongst us. Removing the app damages a pile of programs in the iPhone's bin folder like Erica's Utilities, OpenSSH, Doom, and Launcher, though you can sort it by simply re-installing. Apparently his father's been notified and he's been given a harsh talking to and the site with the malicious source is now offline.

Just as we heard yesterday, Apple has reached an agreement to standardize pricing across Europe. This in response to EU (and UK) concerns over Apple (and the record labels) engaging in anti-competitive pricing for music offered over iTiunes. The move brings UK prices down to match the already standardized pricing found in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland and Spain. A savings of about 10%. The rub? We'll have to wait up to 6 months for the change to go into effect.

Perhaps it was unfair of Ewan to review a beta - but maybe his feedback will help the development team avoid wasting their (and other people's) time? Nokia Channels is a newspaper-like, closed content consumption system and here's the detailed review .
"Out of Nokia’s Beta labs comes another application that could well make the grade and get bumped up to a ‘full’ (firmware) Nokia application in the future. Nokia Channels is promoted as a ‘media service’, giving you access to newspapers and content from around the world. How strong is it, and can it stand up to the full might of the open internet and the power of RSS readers?
Okay, this is going to be painful, because the answer is “not very well in most cases”.

Release notes from Erica Sadun:
First of all, this was not my idea. The inspiration was from GeeZuzz (I hope I got that nick right!) who figured out the big idea but it took several weeks of hacking to get the iPhone details working so I take a little credit too.
Download a copy of the Listen beta. It’s still *very* beta. Install it on your iPhone, get near music and run it. It will sample the music for 5 seconds and then attempt to contact the id server. If it succeeds, great, you'll see the song, artist and album. If it fails, nothing happens. You just wait 30 seconds and if you haven't gotten an ID, quit and restart the program.
Let me know how it goes.

ZodTTD has ported Open Transport Tycoon over the the Apple iPhone:
OpenTTD.app is a ZodTTD project bringing the classic game of Transport Tycoon Deluxe to the iPhone and iPod Touch via an OpenTTD port.
OpenTTD.app v0.6.0 is the initial public release and is available at the ZodTTD.com Project Installer.app repo source: zodttd.com/repo/
1. On the iPhone or iPod Touch's Safari goto this URL (with trailing / )
http://zodttd.com/repo/
2. If Installer.app doesn't launch it's because that feature wont work for people without an Installer.app Safari plugin. Instead, add the repo source to the sources list. You will need to launch Installer.app and goto Sources, then Edit, then Add. Add the URL above.
3. You should now see the latest ZodTTD.com projects listed in Games and Recently Added.
Thanks!
Feature’s include:
- Classic tycoon simulation gameplay!
- 38 different languages supported!
- Internet Multiplayer games on the iPhone and iPod Touch!
- A nearly 100% accurate port. Only things missing from the PC version are text input, sound, and music which will be implemented into my adaptation of the SDL port in coming releases.
- Multi-touch support for right clicking and positioning/clicking the cursor.
Play OpenTTD.app, the first fully featured game on the iPhone and iPod Touch that even includes internet multiplayer!
Screenshots:
Thanks for the support everyone! If you enjoy this title, please leave feedback in the forums.

News from Mollusk:
Skinz Sudoku is a Sudoku game which combines good looks and ease of use...
It offers beautiful graphs by Daydream, with 4 different skins depending on the difficulty level.
The game's particularity is that it offers 4 different input methods for you to select from, to fit everyone's needs...
- Wheel : Select a number from the number wheel around the tile you touched. You can also set a hint by touching one of the corners...
- Square : Same thing, but in a simplier/more compact layout...
- Bar : Select first which number to plot, and then touch the grid to put it anywhere...
- Writing : In this mode, touch a tile to have it zoom, and just write down the number you want !
You can also add small number hints at anytime, with every input method, using the top right button, or undo if you make an error...
All the levels are randomly generated, so don't expect to finish the game soon ^^

We have found this interesting report from Ste, about a malicious repo for the iPhone. The issues are already solved, but by posting these lines here, we want to open your eyes, that even the iPhone can be affected by kiddies and so called hackers.
Read on:
The repository "Silver Repo", with a maintainer of "Mikey", a category of "Cool" and a URL of "jmwiki.com/repo" is malicious. Remove this Source from Installer as fast as you can.
Note: the problem app was originally found by an IRC user named "DeathHobbit". Another IRC user, named "Francis", figured out what Source that app came from and the original warning to the public was posted on the "ModMyiFone" forums. My thanks to all involved!
He has several malicious apps:
One is called "Important UPDATE", with a description of "An important system update.". It's not clear, from looking at the plist file, if it will show up in the "System" category or the "UPDATES" category.
Another is called "iPhone firmware 1.1.3 prep", with a description of "An important system update. Install this before updating to the new 1.1.3 firmware." As with the other, it's not clear, from looking at the plist file, if it will show up in the "System" category or the "UPDATES" category.
Both of these packages are BOGUS. What they do is download the zip file of Erica's Utilities, version 0.53, from one of *my* mirrors. It then installs it. If you uninstall his package, it will uninstall the files it installed. What this means is that if you had Erica's Utilities installed already, it will overwrite them, during installation and uninstall them during uninstallation, but Installer will think the Erica's Utilites are still installed - but it's files will have been ripped out from under it. Any other app that uses any of the files in her package will break too. If you didn't have Erica's Utilites installed, then installing and removing either of these packages will do no harm.
He has a third package called "Jo Mama", with a description of "Potatoes are burning to the ground", in the "JMCO Apps" category, that installs/uninstalls an old version of my OpenSSH app. This will conflict with any other ssh app you have installed. The zip file, in this case, comes from Nullriver’s site, where they once briefly hosted it for me.
The plist files for all three of these apps are lifted directly from me, with the name, description and category changed.
I've looked up the owner of the domain and called and left a message for him.
More, as I get it.
UPDATE: New information suggests this might be the prank of an 11 year old boy, heh.
UPDATE: Yes, it was a kid, I've spoken to his dad and the site will be coming down. End of story.
