For all those unlocked iPhones out there that were bricked after attempting firmware upgrades, we have some great news. It appears that Apple's new 1.1.3 iPhone firmware rewrites either most or all of the phone's firmware, allowing for bricked iPhones to be brought back to life. If this sounds too good to be true, watch the video above. We tested it on our own dead iPhone that was originally unlocked with AnySIM and later bricked by an attempted upgrade. This phone had just been gathering dust in one of Brian Lam's many gadget drawers, so we were surprised when we finally had success with bringing it back to life. Getting the iPhone working again wasn't as easy as we expected, and at times it didn't seem like the firmware upgrade had worked, so here's what happened.
To upgrade, we put the phone in recovery mode, then connected to iTunes and restored/ upgraded. After the phone had finished upgrading, it would not work with our already valid ATT sim, so we had to activate the phone using iTunes. This is where we ran into some trouble, because after activating the iPhone under our existing account, the phone still did not show any signal and would not activate to our account. We restarted the phone and just like magic, were taken directly to the home screen. The phone now had signal and was clearly activated to our account. We made a few test calls, and tested the data connection, both with complete success.
For all of you out there that will state the video could be fake because it has been edited, let us direct your attention to the plastic-film that is still on the glass of the iPhone. In every shot you will see that the phone still has it's plastic-film on, confirming we are using the same phone before and after.

In this week of Apple craziness, a hand-crafted 18K gold and carbon-fiber iPhone case studded with 3.5 carats-worth of diamonds definitely takes the biscuit. "Quantities are extremely limited" according to its manufacturer, and we say thank goodness—as we do wonder how many utter tools there are out there who'd want to wrap up a gorgeous iPhone in such an butt-ugly case. They'll have to be rich tools too: it's on sale for $20,000. [Case-mate]

Teenager George Hotz, aka GeoHot, the original iPhone unlocker is back. In a post to his personal blog he states that he has successfully unlocked a 1.1.2 firmware and bootloader 4.6 iPhone. Better yet, he posts the not-for-dummies version of the instructions to downgrade the bootloader to version 3.9 in preparation for running AnySim. We haven't tried this ourselves so remember, as GeoHot himself states, this hardware method "could brick your iPhone." You haven't upgraded to 1.1.3 already have you? If so, you're stuck with AT&T.
Update: We're now hearing that a software unlock for 1.1.2 / 4.6 iPhones is right around the corner. So don't crack that case just yet kids.

If you're like us, you feel more than a little annoyed with iPhone's speaker volume. Yes, whether you're waiting for a call, trying to have a speakerphone conversation, or just listening for sweet DTMF tones -- the thing kind of stinks.
Perhaps it's time to take extreme measures, as some owners have resorted to... like sticking a needle through the holes in the speaker enclosure. Yes, according to daring "modders," it's possible to get a 40-percent increase in volume via this simple-yet-destructive trick of perforating the thin plastic which covers the speaker.
Apparently, the phone gets so loud post-surgery that the volume is actually startling to some users. Feeling like you're brave enough to really void that warranty? Let us know the results!

If you're looking to gain respect for your gear as a serious business-class tool, there's no better way than to infiltrate those Big Four accounting firms still using Lotus Notes. According to a piece carried by the Associated Press, Lotus Notes eMail is coming to Apple's iPhone and iPod touch. We kid you not. The announcement is expected as early as Sunday the 20th, the day IBM's annual Lotusphere conference kicks off in Orlando. The software is free for those with existing licenses which means IT is going to have a hell of a time keeping it out of users' hands. If true, the application would presumably be the first official, third-party app developed with Apple's new iPhone SDK. IBM is also expected to announce their free Lotus Symphony flavor of OpenOffice for the Mac at the same time. An IBM spokesman seemingly confirmed the announcements by saying that Apple and IBM have, "a lot in common. We're going to cross-pollinate." Let's just hope they manage to untangle that jumbled Notes UI for finger-friendly navigation during the mating ritual, eh?

So apparently, that whole "plan to shut down a Bochum Nokia plant" didn't exactly sail over everyone's heads, particularly not in Germany. Reports are now flowing out that unions in the nation are taking it upon themselves to urge consumers not to purchase wares from the firm, with Dietmar Muscheid, regional head of the Confederation of German Unions (DGB), being one of the most vocal. Muscheid went on to state that "whoever buys a cellphone today should think about the choice they are making and what catastrophic consequences the company's actions in Bochum will have for thousands of workers." 'Course, the EU has already proclaimed that Nokia won't be getting a dime in relocation (to Romania, supposedly) aid, but unspecified government officials are reportedly lined up to speak with suits from the handset maker later this week to "discuss the plant's future." Whether or not all this commotion will actually change any minds, however, remains to be seen.

Apparently, a lot of iPhone users are experiencing issues related to out of order SMS conversations.
What's the deal, have you seen this? Shout it out in comments.
This post intentionally out of order.
A lot of people were pretty damned stoked about the SMS improvements Apple unleashed upon iPhone owners yesterday with firmware v1.1.3, but it's not all turning up roses.

MNPlight aims at getting rid of the need for a computer with iTunes. It runs on your iPhone, and is able to modify the iPhone calendar, address book and iPod databases.
MNPlight can be of particular interest for Linux users who don't have iTunes, but it can also be used by other users when they want to update their iPhone data when they are away from their iTunes computer.
If you keep using iTunes, you may experiment problems with the Calendar and the Address Book since modifications done on your iPhone won't be seen by iTunes.
Changes:
iTunes:
FireWire GUID is now automatically computed (thanks to Zoltan Kuscsik)
Photos:
Choose pics to send by e-mail
Upload:
Bug with saving files fixed
File Browser:
More actions directly available

You play with crayons and physics. The goal of the game is to move the red ball so that it collects the stars. You can cause the red ball to move by drawing physical objects.
Changes:
New rendering engine using OpenGL, a lot more faster than the previous one and with texture support!
Support for images and animations for objects, as can be seen on the first level of the Crayon Physics pack (I'll update the others in the next update)
Sound effects, and an option on the main menu to turn them off. The sound is currently playing as a system sound, so you have to turn them on to hear anything.
Multi-touch support! Up to 5 simultaneous touches are registered and processed. For now it's only useful for triggers, but I may add something extra for them in the future.
Basic scoring added, online scoring soon to come.
Some new flags and trigger actions, see the iPhysics_Levelpack_Format page.

By night i work on the DCEmu Website its a great hobby because of my love of homebrew and emulation and if im honest i get a buzz from the search for news and the excitement of every release and breakthrough.
By day i work as a gardener (although a bloody great one winning many prizes as part of a small team, ie Local National and once even a Euro Award part of my job is spotting those who are ding crime or about to, Flashers, Murderers, Stab Victims, Muggers, Rapists ive seen a lot over the years in my job but living in Nottingham and originating from Stanns its something im used to.
Which Brings me to tonight, after picking the wife up i had to go to our local Carphone Warehouse in Daybrook Nottingham and on the way there i spotted 3 youths with hoods up, i commented to the wife with something like look at those muppets.
As we turned into the carpark of the shop the same 3 youths were looking very shiftily into the Shop and usually i let the wife go in whilst i sit out side but not liking the way that they were looking around and i just knew they were gonna try something i walked in with the wife.
On entering the shop i spoke to the lone woman at the till that theres 3 youths to the right of the door, bear in mind that it was dark at this time she got her manager to come to the till too, a minute or so later the 3 black youths walked in with hoods down, at that moment a few more people walked in and they seemed to hover then walk out.
a few minutes later the shop was empty apart from me my wife and the 2 shop workers, it was then they rushed in with scissors and cut the alarm cables to the stand with the Apple Iphones on demonstration and rushed to head out the door, the shop manager blocked the door and one threatened to stab him so he wisely back away. The youths ran off, i did try to give chase but they had disapeared into the park next to the shop.
So in the space of 10 Seconds they had stolen 4 brand new Apple Iphones, no chargers but i would assume they would have sim cards of some type in as demo models, lets hope that one they get caught and 2 that the phones are totally blocked.
The police will be arriving soon to take a statement off us, do you know the funny thing, the gits are only sending me a refurnished phone for the phone of mine that was knackered.
That was my night, fun eh :P, but at least no one was hurt so should be thankful.
