Square Enix's support for mobile platforms is already notable, but games like Before Crisis Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy IV The After could be just the start. Today in Japan, the company announced the formation of Square Enix Mobile Studio, a fully owned subsidiary dedicated to the development and distribution of mobile contents.
Set to open its doors this April in Sapporo, far to the north of its parent company's Tokyo home base, Square Enix Mobile Studios will be headed up by Square Enix's current head of mobile business, Yoichi Haraguchi. The company expects to have 20 employees in its first year.
This announcement coincides with the start of Japanese distribution on Final Fantasy IV The After. Users of DoCoMo's i-Mode service can download the FFIV sequel now. EZmode users will get a chance later this Spring.

PacketVideo has a new receiver which can pump mobile TV over good ol' WiFi. PV claims the device will ultimately ship before the year is out in versions supporting over-the-air DVB-H and MediaFLO broadcasting as well as TDtv and WiMAX streaming. Although it's presumably compatible with any WiFi device, they specifically cite support for the the iPhone, N-Series Nokias and HTC devices while demonstrating the device with an iPod touch at Mobile World Congress. The 6.4 x 1.8 x 4-cm block is powered by a lithium-ion battery of unspecified capabilities. Although it's not stated, we assume the received television can be shared with multiple devices over that wireless link -- else why bother with WiFi?

At least that's the only way we can explain the stealth bomber look on this AS-IP300 iPod dock from Kenwood. You can buy a black version to complete the effect, but don't expect to get much out of these 1.9W stereo speakers. The best news is that you're looking at a 95 Euro ($140-ish) pricetag for the unit, which has us rather ambivilant as to if or when this'll be getting a Stateside release.

iAno would allow you to use your iPhone as "virtual" Piano.
Features:
A complete four octave keyboard.
Multi-touch. Up to 5 keys can be pressed at once allowing complex chords.
Sounds like a real piano with realistic piano multi-samples.
Animated piano keys react to your touch.
Play along to all your MP3s.
On-screen keyboard navigation allows you to easily move up and down by octaves or "part octaves" (ie. left-most key is a C or an F).

We've just uploaded iJailBreak 0.5.3 to our Google Code. This version brings a few features from the new ZiPhone version released a short bit ago.
First, the unlock now works on all iPhones - regardless of whether you bought it this afternoon or on June 29. Second, we got some conflicing reports from our PowerPC users regarding iJailBreak working - some said it worked, others said it didn't. This update has re-ensured PowerPC compatibility for those running Tiger or Leopard. If you're running any other version of Mac OS X, iJailBreak will not work.
IMPORTANT: this release does not include iPod Touch support. We're still working on that.

Given the bank’s top notch performance during that whole subprime thing, would you trust Citibank’s opinion on anything these days? One of its fancy pants analysts has officially predicted that Apple will release a 3G iPhone sometime in the next six months, citing low inventory of the current model and high demand for a 3G phone in Europe. Said the analyst, “We believe that lack of 3G has been a significant headwind for iPhone in Europe where 3G is already pervasive.”
Apparently Apple has been telling the bank that it plans to release the 3G iPhone in Europe and Asia before the end of the year. The implication there is that there’s no 3G iPhone in the works for the U.S. this year. Might it have something to do with AT&T’s purchase of all that spectrum?
I’m sorry, but to me, the whole Citibank institution has been to look utterly incompetent these past few months. I wouldn’t put too much credence into what it says.

So there's a rumor floating around the internets concerning AT&T, iPhones, and tethering. The story goes something like this: the word tether is mentioned in an AT&T notice about users upgrading to a new iPhone and being forced into another two-year agreement. Apparently, some folks who've only quickly browsed the document made the mistake of assuming that AT&T used the word "tether" the way we all know it best: computer-to-phone, modem-style tethering. Unfortunately, this is a semantic problem -- what AT&T's talking about is using the dock connector to activate the phone, and sync with your computer... not the other way around. So next time you hear someone talk about AT&T's "tethering" plan feel free to set 'em straight.

Sorry Gizmondo, your dreams of a resurrected user generated gaming platform were just usurped by Nokia. Straight outta Espoo comes Nokia's Yamake (a mashup for "you make the game") for their N-Gage platform. With it, Nokia says players can "create their own games" from a range of "mini games" by adding user generated text, pictures, sound clips and movies. Games can then be shared via the N-Gage Arena and via MMS between N-Gage compatible S60 devices. The press release specifically mentions the creation of mini games "such as" pictures puzzles and quizzes -- so no, we're not looking at user generated, 3D first person shooters upon initial release. In fact, without any images or video to accompany the press release, Yamake sounds more like a user customization platform than game creation platform. Still, we'll cut them some slack as they get this off the ground. One thing seems pretty clear though, this ain't your mama's sidetalkin' N-Gage; Nokia is playing for keeps this time around.
