Hold the presses: Apple may be releasing a new iPhone this year... with 3G! Crazy, we know. The latest iteration of this rumor comes to us courtesy of UBS analysts, who say Infineon will likely be building chips for the phone -- they're powering the current iPhone, so no real surprise there. UBS is also betting on a mid-year 3G iPhone launch, and thinks that EDGE production will ramp down early so Apple gets a chance to clean out inventories. We've got a good feeling about this one, guys.

This is something many UIQ 3 users have been waiting for (me included!). A native SIS client for Google Maps instead of a Java Midlet. The new client is fast, looks neat and has a function called 'My Location' which basically gives a guess of your whereabouts. No press release whatsoever, but for you who want to test it, head over to http://www.google.com/gmm using your UIQ 3's internet browser and download the SIS file. Screenshots after the break.
In my opinion, this is a good sign, showing support for UIQ application development. Not to forget that UIQ Technology signed an agreement with 6 new partners early this year and this could be one of the results. It is a very welcome move and hopefully it will not stop here. There are other Mobile Google Apps clients which need to be made available as native Symbian, especially the GMail Mobile client. The current Java implementation, while it does the job really well, is getting slower and not as good as it would have been, if it was made available natively.

This release of OpenSSH is a repackaging, for the iPhone Installer.app.
Changes:
Fixed issue preventing it from being “uninstalled” when it wasn’t really there anymore, having been wiped out in a firmware upgrade.
If you upgrade your firmware and can’t “uninstall” the old OpenSSH, just upgrade to this one.
If you update your OpenSSH to this version before you upgrade your firmware, you should be able to “uninstall” this one afterwards, whereupon you can just re-install it.

It's confirmed: Apple's next event is scheduled for March 6th, next Thursday. It'll be a Town Hall event; obviously new MacBooks and MacBook Pros aren't to be expected, but the unambiguous "iPhone software roadmap" and the image above should help guide our assumptions as to what will be discussed. The SDK's a given, but "exciting new enterprise features," eh?

As I'm sure you already know, Apple has released firmware versions 1.1.4. It appears that most of the process we currently use no longer works properly. We will have a release in 2 to 3 days that is compatible with 1.1.4 for iPhone and iPod Touch. In the mean time, do not upgrade your device.
Thanks!

As reported by Erica Sadun over at TUAW, Apple has released the 1.1.4 firmware. No sooner had I posted [a comment on her blog entry] that I thought folks should wait to see what Zibri came up with for a 1.1.4 jailbreak, as I thought his was technically the most correct of the various 1.1.3 jailbreaks, Erica reported that Nate True had run Zibri’s existing 1.1.3 jailbreak on his 1.1.4 iPhone and it worked. Jailbreaking works, but he has not tested activation or unlocking yet, both of which he suspects are broken until Zibri updates “ziphone” for 1.1.4. This is all great news. I recommend that everyone just hold off a little bit, until Zibri has said he’s updated it for 1.1.4 and then go for it. If you check his blog, you’ll see he’s working on doing that, right now.
Nate reported that after jailbreaking it, Installer.app thought OpenSSH was still installed, even though it no longer was, and that he couldn’t uninstall it (main script execution failure). I have released an update to OpenSSH that anyone with this issue can update to. If you update to it before you jailbreak your 1.1.4 iPhone, then you should be able to uninstall it ok, via Installer.app, even though it’s gone, as it will now ignore the error it gets when it tries to stop the now-missing daemon. You can then simply reinstall it. If you already jailbroke it and can’t uninstall it, just upgrade to the new version and you’re all set to go. Nate says the root password is still “alpine”.
UPDATE: In comment #132 on Erica’s blog entry, mentioned above, Zibri says:
“I already found everything..
I just need to recompile, check new offsets, do a test and release.
Expect a new version in a day.”

A couple of University of Glasgow students have built a prototype of a program that brings haptic touchscreen technology to the iPhone. It's a buggy program, but even if the kinks get worked out a question remains: does anybody need it?
Haptic touchscreens, as you probably know, provide tactical feedback when a button is pressed. In this case, the phone vibrates when you hit a button. As it stands, the program is extremely buggy, crashing out and leaving the vibrations going even after you've hit the button. But even if it was running perfectly, with a short vibration coming every time you hit a button, would you want it?
First of all, having your phone vibrate almost continuously while you type a text message would be annoying. Secondly, it would suck up loads of battery life. Thirdly, it seems like it wouldn't really help at all. At this point, most iPhone users seem pretty used to the keyboard; it's not a major griping point. And while haptic feedback might come in handy for, say, selecting icons from the home screen, it's not going to allow you to select buttons or type without looking like you can with physical buttons. It seems more a gimmick than an upgrade.
What do you think? If you had the option to download a program that added haptic functionality to your iPhone, would you do it?

Never heard of Abilene Christian University? We're guessing a wide majority of the general public hasn't either, but the institution is definitely getting its name out there by promising each incoming freshman this fall an iPhone or iPod touch. Granted, these aren't being explicitly marked as "free," but similar to Duke's efforts in years past, ACU plans on using these devices for educational enrichment. Reportedly, the handhelds will enable students to "receive homework alerts, answer in-class surveys and quizzes, get directions to their professors' offices, and check their meal and account balances" -- and that's just for starters. Interestingly, we aren't told whether or not the folks already enrolled will be left out -- nor what determines which Apple you get -- but we do know that the entity is hoping to "expand the program in the future."

Looks like there's something to this "downloading music" thing after all -- just eight months after topping Amazon, iTunes has now passed Best Buy to become the number two music retailer in the US. Apple says 50 million customers have bought over 4 billion songs, with 20 million sold on Christmas day alone. That leaves just Wal-Mart in first place, but with the percentage of digital music sales growing each quarter, ol' Wally may not be safe for long.

Apple's 1.1.4 firmware update for the iPhone and iPod touch just hit the wires, courtesy of iTunes 7.6.1.9. Nobody knows what exactly is in store (SDK support, perhaps?), so obviously those jailbreakers out there might want to hold off while the braver souls among us give it a shot. For the record, no SDK has hit Apple Developer Connection yet, so take that for what you will. So far those who've successfully updated haven't seen any changes, but we'll keep you posted. So far the entire official word from Apple on the release seems to be "Bug fixes." Typical.
Update: So far we've tested 1.1.4 on a jailbroken 1.1.3 iPhone and a non-jailbroken 1.1.3 iPhone, and had zero problems with either, including intact music libraries after the procedure -- your mileage may vary! We went through all of the system settings and can't spot anything new. Multiple sources are claiming ZiPhone works, but it's not fully tested and may be a little wonky at this point, so proceed with caution.
Update 2: Well, ZiPhone claims to have worked, but there aren't any icons for our installed apps, and we can't uninstall or reinstall. Also, it's worth noting that since this is a rather hefty update in terms of file size, and yet added features seem non-existant, our best guess is that this paves the way for an SDK in the coming weeks.
