Analysts love to come up with all sorts of conjecture based on history, numbers, and general guesswork. In this case, FBR Research analyst Craig Berger has a few predictions to give us regarding the future of Apple's iPod and iPhone lines. We'll keep them short and sweet here and leave the static mulling to you. First, he expects an updated, lower-priced iPod nano in the near future along with product refreshes for both the iPod classic and touch. That sounds about right, as Apple is almost due for updates of those products anyway. As far as Apple's production rate, he says Apple has increased iPod production around 15 percent and sees Apple shipping 15 million iPhone 3G by the end of the year (he's a big fan of the number "15"). Nothing really surprising here, but if all this pans out, Apple will dig deeper into the smart phone market while tightening its stranglehold on the PMP landscape.

This application allows you to read large Text (.txt,.text), Palm Doc (.pdb), Mobipocket (.pdb,.prc,.mobi), Plucker (.pdb), HTML (.htm,.html), and Fiction Book (.fb2) files quickly and efficiently on the iPhone/Touch. This application doesn't have the fancy formatting of ruBooks or Books.app, but it can quickly load and display large text files that currently cause Books.app or other UI Text View/Web View based apps problems. If you want to load books quickly and read text, this may be the app for you.
Changes:
* Now supports (non-DRM) eReader/Peanut Press PDB files
* Now supports Rich Text RTF files
* Better formatting for Text, HTML, Mobipocket, FB2, Plucker, and Palm Doc files
* Optionally display background files from the /Applications/textReader.app/images directory when reading text
* Optionally allows use of pinch/stretch gestures to shrink/zoom text
* Better management of cache files Add option to force creation of a cache file when opening. You can always reopen a cache file even when you change the encoding settings because they are stored as Unicode.
* Improved indentation and formatting code
Note: Books.app http://code.google.com/p/iphoneebooks/ and ruBooks http://colel.info/rubooks/ provide a formatted display of text and images. If you are willing to break up your book into smaller chapters they may also be options. http://code.google.com/p/iphonetextreader/

iPhone 3G is expected to carry an initial hardware Bill Of Materials (BOM) and manufacturing cost of $173 [£87], according to a “virtual teardown” conducted by iSuppli.
The company says the figure comes in 23 per cent cheaper than the original iPhone, for which it pegged per unit manufacturing cost at $226.
iSuppli says Apple’s iPod and iPhone products are typically priced about 50 per cent more than their BOM and manufacturing costs. This means that with the new 8GB iPhone 3G sold at $199 and the estimated subsidy of $300, Apple will achieve an even higher BOM/manufacturing margin.
Moreover, iSuppli says fluctuations in component pricing mean the BOM/manufacturing cost of the second-generation iPhone will fall 37 per cent to $148 in 2009.
iSuppli's full iPhone 3G cost breakdown is as follows:
- $22.80 8Gbyte NAND Flash Memory
- $20.00 Improved Touch screen
- $20.00 Display
- $13.50 Application Processor
- $5.00 1Gbit SDRAM - Mobile DDR
- $15.00 HSDPA Digital Baseband
- $7.00 2 Megapixel Camera Module
- $4.00 WLAN chipset
- $4.00 Battery
- $3.60 GPS
- $2.00 Motion Sensor / Accelerometer
- $4.25 RF Transceiver
- $1.89 64Mbit NOR Flash Memory, 32Mbit PSRAM
- $1.80 Charger (USB)
- $2.00 Bluetooth 2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate (EDR)
$126.84 Total of Above Items- $37.16 Other Costs
- $164.00 Total Bill of Materials (BOM) Costs (Direct Materials Only)
$173.00 [£87] Total BOM & Manufacturing Costs

Last week we reported that UK punters were facing the prospect of shelling out £370 and £470 for the forthcoming 8GB and 16GB iPhone 3G but today the news is so much better.
O2 has revealed that the new 8Gb and 16GB iPhones will cost £300 and £360, a reduction on earlier reports of £70 and £110, respectively. And, even though you're not prepared to pay for the hefty monthly contracts, both phones will come with 6 months of unlimited browsing and Wi-Fi access.
PAYG users will then be able to retain those services for £10 per month after the 6 months is up.
Makes you glad not be an Italian, considering they're going to be charged £395 and £450.
Big thanks to crack Gizmodo readers [Vince, Nicky, Dayks & Rich] for the heads-up.-Martin Lynch
UPDATE: O2 has pulled the pricing details from its PAYG iPhone 3G page. A mistake? Is some O2 Web manager getting a sound thrashing right now for jumping the gun? I know one thing, O2 will get some stick from all of us in the media if it republishes higher prices than it did earlier.

The fact that the iPhone doesn't securely erase user data when you select "Erase All Content and Settings" has prompted a lot of hand-wringing (and given rise to a lot of complicated manual workarounds) as people get ready to flip their old phones and upgrade to the iPhone 3G, but it looks like there's a simpler solution coming: AppleInsider says the iPhone 2.0 software now securely erases user data. The process is apparently similar to Leopard's Secure Erase Trash feature, and it'll unlink data and overwrite it with random bits, making your personal info impossible to recover. Of course, that'll take some extra time -- you're looking at an extra hour of progress bars in your life. That's not so bad -- and if it keeps anyone from checking out our super-embarassing 80s pop playlists, we're all for it.

June 25th, 2008, 21:11 Posted By: wraggster
Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research) will pay $410 million (209 million pounds) for the remaining shares in UK-based Symbian and make its software royalty-free to boost phone sales and respond to new rivals such as Google (GOOG.O: Quote, Profile, Research).
Symbian's software is used in two-thirds of smartphones -- handsets with computer-like capabilities -- and 6 percent of all cellphones, but new platforms such as Google's Android and Apple's (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) iPhone could challenge its dominance.
"The move's a shrewd response to growing threats from other providers of mobile phone software," said Geoff Blaber of UK-based research firm CCS Insight, citing the open-source LiMo Foundation as well as Google and Apple.
Currently, Symbian's closest rival is Microsoft's (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) Windows Mobile operating system, which has just 13 percent of the market despite the U.S. software maker's efforts to gain market share.
Microsoft charges $8 to $15 per phone, according to research firm Strategy Analytics, while Symbian charges on average $4.10.
"This puts a lot of pressure on Microsoft right at a time when they are trying to really push into the consumer space," said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi.
"Lower price points are what operators and the market need to push smartphone adoption and dropping royalty is going to help that. For operators this offers a good alternative to Android," she said.
Nokia, which makes 40 percent of all phones sold globally, will pay 264 million euros ($410 million) for the 52 percent of British-based Symbian it does not already own, it said.

Some Gizmondo news at last
We set our moderation and staff team loose on Carl to see what they could draw out of him this time.
the below are our questions and as usual Carl's answers are quoted below.
Do you plan to harness or upgrade the GPS in current Gizmondo's or new Gizmondo's i.e.: Will you approach ALK again with CoPilot, look at other companies?
QUOTE
Yes, we want to upgrade the GPS in the new release. We are currently looking for a GPS partner.
Will we be seeing an improved GPS chip such as the SIRF 3 found in modern GPS units?
QUOTE
A new GPS chip will be included into the new version of the Giz
Will the Gizmondo Servers be back? Such as the Location based, where am I, or where is my nearest, services?
QUOTE
We are currently building out a worldwide server farm to minimize load times for users regardless of where they are located.
What is going to happen to SmartAds? Will we see it returning to the Gizmondo?
QUOTE
No
Will there be additional support for audio and video files on the Gizmondo such as the widely used Divx and Xvid?
QUOTE
We are discussing support for Xvid but currently the audio/video formats we are planning are the ones built in to the Windows Moble Media Player which include MP3 & WMA for audio and WMV and MPEG for video. Thus far, we have not discussed support for Divx.
Will the updated Gizmondo have WIFI or 3g capabilities?
QUOTE
The updated Gizmondo will have WIFI. We've looked at 3g but the 3g boards are really expensive to add and would put the Giz outside the pricepoint we are trying to stay within. We are looking at a external USB device that could be plugged into the Giz to provide 3g capabilities.
With the change in user interface will you be using the astonishing tribe http://www.tat.se <http://www.tat.se/> again?
QUOTE
Yes, we are upgrading the UI and are handling the entire redesign in house. We took a TON of feedback from Gizmondo users.
What support will you be giving to operating systems such as driver support? Last time we were stuck with using windows 98-XP will there be Mac, Linux and Windows Vista support?
QUOTE
The new Giz will be on Windows mobile, so there will be Vista support. Not sure yet on Mac or Linux versions yet. We are also looking at an Android version as well.
Will Gizmondo be producing its own software for purchase? Can you divulge any ideas or projects you have going?
QUOTE
Yes, we will be producing non-game titles. We will be happy to provide you with detail on any of our applications as they get closer to launch.
From our development community
Can you elaborate on what support you will be providing for developers and programs you will be initiating to draw them in before releasing to the public? The development guys really need specific details on this as soon as possible.
QUOTE
We will provide a very comprehensive SDK, free access to a new device for registered developers for testing. There will be a revenue share program for new titles as well as for Gizmondo peripherals. We are also going to launch a small venture fund for promising technologies/applications developed for the Gizmondo. We have been approached by several educational institutions who want to use the Giz for lifestyle testing, as a universal remote etc. As we said before, we are committed to developing the Giz as a platform and we want to encourage these creative ideas.
The last Gizmondo lacked any extra incentives for developers, thus its homebrew community was also diminished. Are there any extra incentives or programs for developers this time round?
QUOTE
There will be a chance for revenue share on any application built for the Gizmondo and sold/distributed through the website. We also have other marketing partners that have indicated they will want to partner with members in the development community.
Will developers be able to buy the Gizmondo 2.0 before the public release (Dev Unit), so that they can produce content for the community in time for the actual launch?
QUOTE
Yes. We will have dev units and the SDK available early in 3rd quarter.
Will there be any difference in a Developer Unit & a Normal Unit (or any other units for that matter)?
QUOTE
No, there won't be a difference between the units. All units will come unlocked.
Will there be any other specific resources to help developers get started developing with the Gizmondo 2.0 (e.g. SDK, Documentation, Forums/Developer Network...)?
QUOTE
Yes, we will offer all of these...SDK, Documentation, Forums/Developer Network.
I shall let this settle and see what people can ask next
Prospects of Android sound interesting though it would defiantly push the Gizmondo into a future market with the boom on that platform imminent a lot of money is being invested into android and Gizmondo backing it would mean we could get our hands on a first gaming android device.
