You know that the iPhone is powerful enough to render 3D games like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, as well as various other ones we covered in the marathon review session, but just how powerful is it? How does it compare to actual gaming handhelds like the Nintendo DS and PSP? An EA developer put it this way. On a scale of the three, it's in between the DS and the PSP, but sliding more towards the PSP. That's right. In terms of power, you can expect to see games that look at least as good as the DS once developers get enough (read: more than four months) development time with it.
But how good is the iPhone in terms of being a game console? How good are the tilt controls for accepting input for programs that you to make small adjustments with the phone in 3D space? Here's what the same developer from EA said to better help you conceptualize its accelerometer. "Think of it as a loose analog stick...you get lots of random data." Developers need to create smoothing algorithms in order to take random data points and interpret them into a curve which can then be used as movement info. Think about the Wii Remote before the MotionPlus add-on in Wii Sports Baseball. Remember all that jiggling your bat did? Yeah, this is that.

After unlocking and jailbreaking iPhone OS 2.0, the iPhone Dev Team has now liberated the new iPhone 3G, only five days after launch. This means a Pwnage tool that will allow you to install the unofficial applications that Apple doesn't want you to have in your iPhone—like video recording apps or game emulators—alongside with the App Store ones. The upcoming Pwnage will support the classic iPhone, the iPod touch, and the iPhone 3G. The video shows it works great, shown here.
We can't wait for the tool to be released.

an interview with Extreme Tech, Apple product head Greg Joswiak explained the lack of cut and paste in the iPhone: it's just not a priority right now. He says Apple worked its way as far down its "priority list" of features for firmware 2.0, but just not far enough to reach cut and paste. He then went on the explain why there wasn't a full native office suite ready for App Store launch, and that turn-by-turn navigation is allowed and likely to be released soon, though by a third party.

Apple has announced that sales of the iPhone 3G topped one million on Sunday, just three days after launch.
"It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
Apple also said that iPhone and iPod touch users have downloaded more than 10 million applications from its new App Store since its launch late last week.
According to a report by The Guardian, RBC Capital Markets analysts believe that buyers will be frustrated by limited stock and logistical problems caused by launching across 28 mobile operators in 22 countries. Nevertheless, they expect Apple to achieve overall worldwide sales of 5.1 million iPhone 3Gs by Q3 2008.
iPhone purchasers in the US were unable to use their new phones for several hours because the iTunes store - through which users administer their accounts - was weighed down by requests.
In the UK, O2 - the exclusive mobile retailer for iPhone - saw its web-based retail system collapse on Friday, making it impossible to register and sell new handsets. The problem persisted into Saturday when stores were unable to sell the new phones, despite adequate stock.
Apple is expected to meet its target of launching the new 3G handset in 70 countries, said RBC analysts, and will sell around 14 million iPhones in the next year.

So I read this on gizmodo. Here's the truth...
Post beta 4, the ramdisk hack stopped working. Sorry Zibri, guess you'll have to steal another exploit. They also changed the recovery mode USB protocol to use the control endpoint to send commands.
The possiblity of unlocking, which is very distinct from jailbreaking, is based entirely on the baseband bootloader. Apple doesn't appear to upgrade the bootloader on phones in the field, probably for fear of breaks. So any old iPhones out there today, regardless of version, can be unlocked.
The iPhone 3G uses a different bootloader, which I believe there aren't any known exploits in yet. So no unlock.
There is a known exploit in iBoot, on both the old and 3G iPhones. The "the specific date/time is not firm yet" pwnage tool will leverage it to jailbreak all 2.0 software iPhones, 3G and otherwise. Dev team, that date better be soon or I might just have to release yiPhone. The iBoot exploit is yours, use it. You wouldn't want a repeat of ZiPhone now...

Digital Smoke LLC is proud to announce the release of their popular Solitaire City game for iPhone and iPod Touch devices. As with the Windows and Pocket PC versions, Solitaire City on the iPhone is played against the clock for points. The faster a game is completed, the higher the score. If a Wi-Fi or cellular network connection is detected, then scores from players all round the world are automatically downloaded for daily, weekly and long term competition. The graphics are of the highest quality, making full use of the iPhone's 3D hardware to display rotating, spinning cards, shadows and particle effects. Fun sound effects also add to the experience.
All the popular solitaire games have been implemented such as Spider, FreeCell, Klondike, Poker Squares, Pyramid, Golf, Yukon and more, along with less familiar games such as Casket, Eliminator and Alternations, all with numerous game rules to add variety. Learning the rules of an unfamiliar solitaire game can be tedious and confusing at the best of times but Solitaire City actually makes it fun using a unique training system that teaches people how to play as they participate, pointing out valid moves and explaining the rules along the way. No more boring game rules to read. Learning to play is now fun.
Solitaire City's artificial intelligence points out when a game has blocked and it's time to give up, sparing the frustration of searching for a non-existent move. It can also point out the best move to play when the going gets tough, saving valuable time in the quest for a top score.
Solitaire City is available from the new App Store or iTunes and is compatible with the iPod Touch and all iPhone models including the new 3G device.
Digital Smoke is an independent software developer, creating fun video games for a variety of popular handhelds, computers and consoles.

Reporter Eric Spillman went down to the local iPhone line on Friday to cover it for his station. His version of coverage consisted of standing next to the line and asking hard hitting questions such as "Have any of these people ever seen a naked woman before?" not to anyone in particular, but to the camera. Not that I'm against making fun of geeks, but such an unoriginal and unfunny approach just set him up to be called out. When he finally did approach someone in line, the whole thing got a little more awkward. Kudos to the guy in line for making Spillman look even more stupid.

Talk about an android phone made by Google died down after the release of Android, but it seems that you just can't keep a good rumor down. According to TechCrunch, an Android made by Google may actually become a reality based on two new bits of information—the first being a quote in a Mediaweek interview with Google head honchos Larry Page, Sergei Brin and CEO Eric Schmidt. The reporter noted that “The trio of Google execs also used the opportunity to talk about the inroads the company is making with its own branded mobile phone as a replacement for the iPhone.” The second being that Techcrunch claims a company called the Ammunition Group may be behind the design

Those pee-tinted screens Blam discovered in the Gizmodo iPhone 3G review are there on purpose, and are meant to make the screen "warmer" and easier to see, Apple said today in its first official response on the matter. Apple’s senior director of iPhone product marketing, Bob Borchers, told MacWorld that the yellow hue was neither a defect nor a bug.

So many of you are probably still in your jammies, reveling in the afterglow of yesterday's purchase, repeatedly opening Maps on your glossy new iPhone 3G and watching in exaggerated wonderment as your location is determined with frightening speed and accuracy. Others might be standing in a line snaking hundreds of bodies long into your friendly local Apple Store, reading this post from the comfort of your Motorola RAZR V3 and realizing that these are some of the last moments you'll be using a physical keypad. Still others are bemused by the fuss -- but whatever your stance on the phone, it's pretty hard to ignore the buzz that's floating around in the aftermath of day zero. Here are some of the goings-on we're tracking:
The masses of humanity continue to collect. Massive stock shortages don't seem to be an issue (yet), but patience is not a virtue we hold dear to our hearts, so we really can't blame these people. Some buyers are reporting a yellow tint to their screens -- probably not enough to notice without another unit side-by-side for comparison, but real nonetheless. Of course, the first iPhone suffered from the occasional crappy backlight, bum touchscreen, or negative black, so we wouldn't be surprised if a few lame displays made it out of the factory floor for this model as well; we're following up with Apple on this and we should have more for you later today. We took the iPhone 3G on a decent drive around New York, and found its tracking to be impeccable. In a situation where we might have veered off the path following Google Maps directions, the blue blip kept us right on track. Despite what you've read (we're looking at you, Mr. Pogue), we see no technical reason that the aGPS can't provide turn-by-turn directions, provided there's software to take advantage of it. There are some complaints floating around about 3G reception, but it's been just fine on our review units around the world so far. How's it treating you out in [your location here]? iphone-dev has a video up of BootNeuter going about its business on a first-gen iPhone that's been upgraded to firmware 2.0, and the process is looking as slick and painless as ever. Unlockers who haven't shelled out for the 3G, commence your salivating. MobileMe seems like it's up for the moment, but don't breathe too hard lest you bring the whole thing down again.
Update: We just spoke with Bob Borchers, senior director of product marketing for the iPhone, and he had some very interesting info regarding the "yellow screen" phenomenon we've been hearing about. According to Bob (and Apple), the screen's color temperature has been purposely altered on the new iPhone to produce warmer, more natural tones, sharper images, and deeper blacks. The company says that 1st gen iPhone screens appeared colder and less defined, and they made some adjustments for the new models. In our opinion, what he says is right on -- the screens do look better on the iPhone 3G versus the older variety. What do you guys think?

f you hadn't heard, hundreds of people were turned away from Apple Stores last night, iPhone 3G-less. However, being gluttons for punishment -- and having nothing to do over the weekend -- they've returned in droves to Apple Stores, with reports of lines longer than 200 people stretching out from The Cube, Apple Store Chicago (pictured) and even a store in Durham, NC. Apple offered up vouchers last night, at least at some stores, to anyone still waiting in line, so those folks can show up whenever and jump the line for a phone -- about 30 of them are lined up at The Cube currently. If you don't mind you can let us know in tips what the current status on the line / stock is at your local Apple or AT&T store is, and we'll try to keep track of this mayhem through the weekend. Good luck out there!
