Mobile Chat is a chat application for iPhone's. There are WIP news abou the upcomming v3 release.
Quote:
Well, we’ve begun testing the MC 3.0 application and so far, everything we’ve claimed is a reality. Here’s the reality of our tests:
1. We had a conversation from a computer running Adium to an iPhone running MobileChat.
2. We chatted for about 20 minutes at which time, we restarted the iPhone.
3. MobileChat’s new backend went into play and it immediately began queuing the incoming messages for the iPhone.
4. As soon as the iPhone came back online and MobileChat was opened, the messages started coming down to the iPhone.
The person running Adium, had no idea the user’s iPhone was rebooted. They just thought the person was getting their IMs…and they were!
The new MobileChat truly re-defines instant messaging on the iPhone. We’re very happy with our tests and we’re excited to release the new version as soon as AppStore opens up. (Whenever that may be.)

Phew. Not the closest call we've seen, but close enough to get us sweating ever-so-slightly. We had a strange feeling some wires were crossed when a report surfaced stating that the "Gphone" wouldn't be shipping until 2009, but for whatever it's worth, Google has now addressed the issue and affirmed that it is "still on track to announce Android-powered phones this year." The spokesperson continued by proclaiming that "some of [its] partners were publicly stating that they plan to ship Android phones in the fourth quarter," which leads us to say: crisis averted, carry on.

Just a heads-up college students, in case you're in the market for a new Mac: Apple's annual back to school promotion is expected to kick off tomorrow, and it's rumored to top the nano they've been giving out for the last few. College students who buy a qualifying Mac will get a free 8GB iPod touch (or 8GB nano). The promo will supposedly run June 3-Sept. 15, but we'll know more tomorrow (or by WWDC at the latest) for sure. So hold off for another day, just in case.

New version of the SNES emulator for the Gizmondo.
Changelog:
Gizmondo version has been updated to include fixes done by HeadOverHeels. Also added zipped savestates which work quicker than unzipped states. Also removed the need for KGSDK.DLL, so this release just has the DrPocketSnes executable.

In a move of unsurprising proportions, StyleTap announced today that it will be bringing its Palm OS emulator to the iPhone and iPod touch... officially. This basically means that every one of those precious Palm apps you couldn't live without will now be easily accessible via Apple's devices, thus seriously threatening the argument for keeping your Treo 600. Gregory Sokoloff, CEO of the company, said that the response to a video posted in February of a demo version of the software convinced them to take the plunge. Palm, now might be a good time to stun us with your new OS.

ah, did you really have the nerve to doubt CraigIX? The iPhone gamepad add-on that we heard about just last week is already inching closer to reality, and there's a video to prove it. In the somewhat unexciting clip posted up after the jump, you'll see a PCB mockup of the device doing its thang, though it's quite inelegant in its current form. If you just needed one more something to boost your interest / confidence that this critter was real, you know where to head.

This is good news: It looks like Android will have a one-stop shop for applications, making it easy for developers to get their goods out there and users to pick 'em up. While the "Android Store" isn't confirmed, project lead Andy Rubin said at the Google I/O developer conference yesterday:
"It would be a great benefit to the Android community to provide a place where people can go to safely and securely download content and where a billing system would allow developers to get paid for their effort...We wouldn't have done our job if we didn't provide something that helps developers get distribution."

The drawbacks outweigh the benefits.
a) The location tech in the current iPhone is much quicker. No matter what chip, even SiRFstar chips in full blooded GPSes take awhile to lock on. When using the very capable N95, I'd often drive across town or walk half way to my destination before I'd get signal lock.
b) I'd never use an iPhone as a car GPS. Not even with updated software. The amount of work and expertise that goes into a high end, 5+ generation Garmin is some serious stuff. The logic is all proprietary. It's not easy to do. And GPS antennas need to be somewhat pointed. If it's on your dash, it needs to be on the back. If it's for walking, it needs to be on the front. Which is it?
c) Battery life gets screwed when you keep the GPS on with constant updates.
d) These chips aren't exactly small, although they have been known to fit in things like Suunto watches. That going to make this thing thicker?
No thanks. Don't need it. I'm fine with the current location technology. It works for walking and that's all I need it for.
