Okay, so T-Mobile confirmed on Saturday that it's launching "multiple" Android devices from "three partners" later this year, and since most people assume the HTC Magic / Sapphire / myTouch / whatever and the Samsung I7500 are pretty much locked in, speculation has generally centered around that mysterious G1 v2 and the identity of the third partner -- and it looks like it's going to be Motorola. Not only did commenter Someperson notice that the button labels on the alleged G1 v2 are basically identical to those on other recently-launched Moto phones, Boy Genius Report says today that they can "more or less confirm" the v2 will be Schaumburg's first Android set -- a development that lines up perfectly with last month's rumors of a slider QWERTY piece. Yep, it all fits together nicely, except for the fact that HTC is oddly out of the loop on the sequel to the G1 -- but since T-Mobile owns that particular trademark, it can do whatever it wants, you know? Hopefully we'll find out more soon -- if that sketchy leaked roadmap is correct, we'll be seeing this guy in the fall.

ake this for what it is -- a totally unverified rumor from a Chinese forum -- but a set of specs for a next-gen iPhone have leaked out along with this screenshot, and they're not entirely far-fetched. According to the alleged leak, iPhone model MB717LL 9 ("iPhone2,1" perhaps?) will have a 600MHz processor (up from the current 400MHz unit), 256MB of RAM (from the current 128MB), 32GB of storage, a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, as well as a digital compass and FM radio, all while retaining the same battery, basic shape, and screen size. Do we believe it? Well, if we were to conservatively guess at specs for a next-gen Apple phone that's pretty much what we'd come up with -- with the exception of FM -- so we're not shaking our heads too hard. Plus we've definitely seen evidence that a compass will figure into the equation, and there's endless whispers that the camera will see an upgrade. Still, only Steve and the gang know for sure, and we're (probably) not finding out till they're ready -- WWDC, are you here yet?

Delphine's classic platformer Flashback is now available on the iPhone! Seeing as it's only one of best games ever made, this should be good news, but then, this is the iPhone we're talking about.
Which means expectations need to be tempered. Early reviews are complaining that the game has rubbish controls, and that it's not the original title, instead being a port of an open source version of the game.
Nevertheless, I haven't tried it myself, but at $6 that'll probably change shortly. After all, if the original is so timeless, then an iPhone version of the game can't be that bad, right? Right........?

iPhone developers have been sent an email instructing them that Apple will no longer approve content created for version 2.0 of the device OS.
The Register reports that from now on all content needs to be 3.0 compatible in order to stand a chance of making it onto App Store.
Apple unveiled v3.0 of the iPhone OS at an event back in March, with availability expected this summer, along with new incarnations of hardware.
The update included new functionality such as MMS, subscription-based apps, cut and paste text and P2P Bluetooth.

Eidos makes iconic football sim available on the App Store.
The iPhone incarnation of the game was co-created by Beautiful Game Studios and mobile specialist Dynamo Games.
It replicates most of the functionality from the full PC game, including the ability to take control at top clubs in multiple leagues, player training, board interaction and press conferences.
The user interface has also been adapted to take advantage of the iPhone's touchscreen function.
Championship Manager 2009 costs £3.49 to download from App Store.

Maybe it's because I am a geek that I just accept that things I want to work will not always do so. Maybe it's because I'm forgiving of this that I don't often rant about it. But here is one issue that I need to bring up to highlight why companies aren't flocking away from Windows Mobile to a platform such as Android.
One thing I really liked about my G1 when I got it was the fact I could use Google Reader to catch up on my headlines while on the go. The Webkit browser seemed to work much better than any other mobile browser I'd used, and I was happy with it. But recently, I've found that when I hit "Mark these items as read", they don't get marked. They just reload again when pulling the next 15 items (Which are just the same 15 items I've seen before). I thought this may just be me, until I found others reporting the same problem. Apparently big G changed something around mid-March that broke the web interface "mark all these items as read" button. The best I can tell, this issue has been around now for about 1 1/2 months, and Google's only response has been "We're working on it".
So a Google-driven OS is having problems with a Google product and the best users get is "We're working on it..." and effectively a mobile outage of what some would consider a mission critical application. This doesn't bode well for Google, cloud computing, or Android. And it's one reason people stay with Windows Mobile.
WinMo may not be the prettiest, but I'm having a really hard time remembering the last time it didn't work with a critical MS application because MS changed the application, but left the mobile users stranded.

This wonderful GUI Baseband downgrader was created by w1kedZ (coding) & DHowett (GUI). It is based on the exploit in the 5.08 bootloader found by geohotz. So yes you must have the 5.08 bootloader for this to work. The beautiful part about this tool is that it will check your bootloader for you.
The way the tool works:
1. It verifies your bootloader version and displays it before attempting to downgrade (won't attempt if bootloader isn't 5.08) so it is much safer than other methods.
2. It detects current baseband version, and the patches accordingly...this means it will downgrade any baseband from 2.30 to 4.26.08 (beta 5)
It is available now on the BigBoss Repo. Look for 3G Fuzzyband Downgrader.

There are rumors that Apple might buy EA, but some interesting counterpoints abound. File this one firmly under 'unconfirmed,' but it's nevertheless a tantalizing rumor. According to Fast Money's Guy Adami, Apple is 'eyeing Electronic Arts as a takeover target.' EA is currently the second-largest games publisher in the world and owner of the smash hit NFL-licensed series of football games. Could we be facing the possibility of an iMadden? Well, probably not. Apple has indeed been bolstering its games know-how, hiring a major Xbox strategist away from Microsoft in recent weeks. And EA is no stranger to Apple platforms: in the last year it's brought several of its major franchises to the iPhone (with more on the way), including Sim City, Tiger Woods, and Spore, with considerable success. But it's a far cry from there to a takeover, and that's putting it mildly. Video games analyst Michael Pachter seems to agree. Speaking to Gamasutra, he pointed out that if Apple was looking to make some entertainment acquisitions, it could buy Warner Music — which controls 20% of the music industry — for roughly half of EA's estimated price.

In a continued attempt to put its classic, excavatory arcade game Dig Dug on every piece of consumer electronics known to man, Namco recently tossed the title into the infinite expanse known as the iPhone/iPod Touch App Store. This particular version, titled Dig Dug REMIX, features 256 levels, as well as the titular Remix mode, which adds a few power-ups and some high octane Trance beats to the standard game (probably). It's on the App Store right now for $5.99 -- perhaps that seems a tad costly, but hey, that's inflation for you.

The creator of iCombat weighed in with his thoughts on newly-popular piracy of iPhone apps with an interesting conclusion: It's not worth the trouble to police the pirates, and they might even prove helpful.
iCombat, a take on Combat for Atari (that we quite liked), suffered from a huge ratio of pirates to legitimate users: Nearly 5:1 for the app's first week before levelling out to about 1:1 later. That's right, five times as many pirates as paying users.
Yet the app's creator isn't furiously chasing after pirates. He implemented a sort of trick version for pirates that only reaches level 5 (of 20) before displaying a button leading to a page on his site that reads:
Hi if you have been directed to this page it's because we see that you have a pirated copy. While we are glad you are interested please understand that we want to continue making it better, but to do that we need people to each pay for their copy. If you want to continue using please purchase today.
He reasons that word of mouth is word of mouth, and pirates represent an opportunity to upsell the full app. Besides, just because someone pirates an app doesn't mean you're losing money; many pirates have no intention of paying for an app, so it's not like you would have gotten their money anyway. If the app can't be pirated, many would just go without.
It's an interesting read, for sure. Seeing as how some of us are pirates ourselves, we like the idea of working around the issue rather than attacking it as if it'll go away.

Here's an interesting new mandate for all of Missouri School of Jounalism's incoming freshman: equip themselves with iPhones and iPod touches. Actually, let's go ahead and clarify what "mandate" means here, as associate dean Brian Brooks has stated that no one will a be punished for not buying / owning one. While noting the audio recording and playback capabilities were motivation for this decision, he explains the reason it's classified as a requirement is because it lets students include it in their financial need estimate -- wholly beneficial when you're figuring out scholarships and loans. It doens't look like there'll be any direct discounts from U of M, however, unlike some other schools with similar initiatives. It's a clever loophole, to be sure, but we'd wager there's more than a few undergraduates who are none too pleased at the Apple favoritism, and to be honest, we love nothing more right now than imagining a large group of S60 and Zune supporters gathering in a field for frisbee, picnic, and lots of protesting.

It's no secret that T-Mobile has some grand Android-based plans after the million-selling success of the G1, and although we've heard sketchy reports of future devices to come, it sounds like things are starting to firm up: CTO Cole Brodman told GigaOm yesterday that the carrier is planning to launch "multiple" Android devices from "three partners" later this year. One of those is pretty obviously the HTC Magic / Sapphire / myTouch, but that's just the tip of the potential iceberg here -- we've got a feeling that the Samsung I7500 "Houdini" will be involved, the G1 v2 is certainly interesting, there's that mysterious Huawei set we saw at MWC, and hell, we've even got reports of netbooks, tablets, and home phones in the mix. That's a lot of directions Timmy-O can go, any predictions?

We've seen various weird iPhone screenshots before, including that of the Prototype OS, but this one is nice and new... and hot.
A guy named Jeff posted a screenshot of the iPhone indicating the iPhone got overheated. There's no doubt if it's fake or real as the same can be found even in the Apple Knowledge base, but most of us have never actually seen it.

According to MacRumors, NIN's iPhone application has been approved. Trent Reznor has reported via his Twitter account that the now-approved app was resubmitted without modification, which suggests that Apple reconsidered their initial rejection. This should really come as no surprise to anyone who follows Apple news since it follows the company's typical pattern of handing potentially controversial iPhone apps, especially when it concerns high-profile rejections

Apple just changed a major policy of the AppStore submission process! As per the change, they are now approving apps on 3.0 compatibility basis instead of 2.x.x.
This a great effort by Apple as soon the 3.0 will be released and this will help developers to be ready beforehand. On the other hand, it is a big blow to those devs who haven't purchased the $99 developers program yet as they might be offering free apps only.
That being the case, if you are in process of submitting an app to the store, wait for a moment and check if it works with the upcoming version of the OS.
P.S. Apple will be removing any incompatible apps currently selling on the store. Therefore, to avoid any loss of sales, update your app now!
