Torches, banners, music ID and lighters - everything that's useful when you're knee-deep in mud.
Apple has put together a collection of apps it thinks will be popular across the fields of Europe during this year's music festival season.
The apps range from the useful in the form of Shazam music ID, Facebook for those all important updates and Last.fm, to the more practical such as Masayuki Akamatsu's banner message generator and John Haney Software's Flashlight.
But top of the list has got to be Moderati's freebie Virtual Zippo Lighter for all those slower numbers.

During an otherwise dry TechED conference panel about Windows Mobile 6.5 development, Senior Project Manager Loke Uei Tan made a surprising admission: 6.5's semi-vaunted new interface was severely rushed, and isn't even finished. UPDATED
From his mouth:The reason why we couldn't complete the interface on Windows Mobile 6.5 is because of time. We only spend what, eight months, nine months, to build 6.5 from ground up and it's actually an amazing engineering feat. But, in order to do that, we had to do some prioritization and we had to cut certain features. Eventually, we will make sure that the UI capabilities are carried out throughout the whole platform.
It's a revealing, slightly embarrassing mea culpa, and an honest one. Wherever new interface features have been implemented in 6.5, they work fairly well, but massive parts of the OS still looks and operate like they did in 6.1, such that 6.5 feels more like an interface add-on than an actual OS upgrade.
But hey, points for honesty! And maybe, just maybe, Tan's "eventually" means "before 6.5 ships."
UPDATED: The WinMo dev team has responded in the comments. Basically, 6.5 is "finished" in the sense that interface changes won't reach much deeper than we've already seen. One thing: the above screenshots show an early build of the OS, and the Honeycomb looks a bit different now. The response:You guys never seize to surprise us with your titles!
The WM6.5 UI that we planned to build is complete, not half-assed as reported. The original question was why we couldn't persist our new "chrome"/UI across all UI elements like settings etc. Because of time, we decided to prioritize the more important UI elements first and made sure they were revamped like the home screen, today screen and start menu. We also have more finger friendly controls that persists throughout all applications.
The screenshots you posted above are from an older beta build anyway, I'm sure there are screenshots of the RTM build floating on the net somewhere that you can look at. Just looking at screenshots also doesn't do it justice as it has fluid animations that elevates the experience.

That suspicious-looking video of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 on iPhone from the other day has been confirmed as being real. Sort of. In a roundabout way. Let me explain.
The game is running on an iPhone. The developers, LTI Gray Matter, have confirmed this. And they should know, they made the thing. But the problem is, they made it of their own accord. Didn't go and ask Activision first, just...ported it themselves. For the hell of it.
Ultimately, they'd like Activision to release the game, but whether it is or not is ultimately up to the people who actually own the rights to the game: Activision.
We're sure that Activision don't want to start a precedent with unsolicited game developments, but then again...we're also sure they like to exploit the shit out of their franchises. Who knows, this one may actually turn up on the App Store!

We'll drum up a nice full review later today or tomorrow, but thought we'd let you all know who've been waiting - SlingPlayer Mobile is OUT! Click here to bring it up in iTunes, and yes, it is $29.99 as rumored earlier yesterday. And it doesn't work over 3G.
Of course, I know you're thinking "wait, I don't know if $30 is worth it with no 3G usage available..." well, have no fear. Tricker ThreeG is now available via Cydia, which once installed allows you to use SlingPlayer Mobile over 3G as well as WiFi. No...

Sometime back, Apple made it possible to pay for iPhone 3G Online from the US Online Apple Store but with no option of doorstep delivery! This was still a pain as you still had to visit the nearby (or farby!) Apple store to grab it.
But it seems that you Apple changed this policy, without any announcement. Effective immediately, you can get the phone delivered straight to your doorstep from the US Apple Online Store - without even paying a shipping price! This is a clever move by Apple, which seems to be in a hurry to clear it's inventory, probably to prepare them for the anticipated upcoming model of the iPhone.
If you are not much interested in buying the upcoming model - maybe because you really love the current one - you can now .

Sweating bullets over network saturation, are we? AT&T's obviously taking a good helping of heat today over Sling's rock-and-a-hard-place decision to remove 3G streaming capability from its SlingPlayer Mobile build for the iPhone -- a decision that gets at the very heart of several hot-button issues plaguing AT&T and Apple alike -- and the carrier understandably felt the need to release an official statement to address the situation. Unfortunately, it prompts as many questions as it offers answers. It starts off simply enough, stating that apps like SlingPlayer could create congestion on the network that denies services to others -- and while a truly trivial number of users own Slingboxes, we understand what they're getting at; no amount of tweaking or fudging of a modern HSPA network can withstand the traffic onslaught generated by wildly popular streaming video services.
Here's where we start to lose our way, though. AT&T cites a portion of its wireless terms and conditions -- "Applications like this, which redirect a TV signal to a personal computer, are specifically prohibited under our terms of service" -- and says that it considers "smartphones like the iPhone to be personal computers in that they have the same hardware and software attributes as PCs." Sure, guys, but a RAZR shares 85 percent of its DNA with a PC and an iPhone shares 87 percent, so we're splitting hairs here -- never mind the fact that you've inexplicably labeled the S60-powered Nokia 6650 (which can run SlingPlayer, by the by) a dumbphone simply because it lacks a QWERTY keyboard. Furthermore, AT&T specifically points out that it doesn't restrict users from downloading streaming videos, which is the very problem SlingPlayer generates -- the upload from the user's TV on the far end is the ISP's concern, not AT&T's, and we figure that the network pressure generated by the download is roughly equivalent to watching a whole bunch of YouTube videos. It doesn't add up.
Next, the carrier uses the opportunity to pimp its extensive WiFi network and says that you're welcome to use SlingPlayer there; that's all well and good, and yes, it's cool that AT&T gives iPhone users free access to the hotspots, but it's no substitute for the mobility of streaming Sling over the WWAN, which works really freaking well -- just ask countless BlackBerry, S60, WinMo, and Palm users who are using SlingPlayer as you read this. The only material difference is that they can't be touched -- not as easily, at least, as iPhone users who are bound to the whim of Apple's singular, all-powerful clearinghouse.
Look, AT&T, just tell it like it is: you're saying your 3G network would fold like a cheap suit if these apps took off. Thing is, it already has in some places -- trust us, we've experienced it firsthand -- so let's make sure the blame gets distributed appropriately here.

Back when we were your age, we had to buy our iPhone 3Gs partway online, then we'd trudge across 17 miles of frozen tundra to the Apple Store to complete the sale -- and that's the way we liked it. Now, you whippersnappers have the option of letting Apple ship the thing straight to your door, you lazy, good-for-nothing bums. Of course, you could do this directly through AT&T for a hot minute now, but if your eyes are particularly sensitive to shades of orange, maybe this'll be a more pleasant experience for you.

Missouri University's new policy! Effective this fall 2009! Missouri's Journalism students majoring in Journalism will be required to have either an iPod Touch or an iPhone! They will be required to own one of the devices for the delivery of freshman-orientations information and of course material for their course.
I think this is cool myself but many might not agree - a school is going to force one into buying either the iPod Touch or the iPhone. What will be nice about using either device is you would be able to electronically download material from iTunes University, a no-cost component of the AppStore.
What do you think about this new policy? It is a good choice for the University or not? And what would be your reaction if you had to go out and buy one of these for one of your classes?

So the Kindle is popular these days, what with the larger size coming, and the iPhone app. We've tested it out and used it (not as cool as the Kindle screen, but decent enough for passing an hour or less somewhere - don't try it for long reading), and it works pretty well... except the book browsing/buying function. That sucked.
Before this latest update on Amazon's part, you were actually directed to Amazon.com in your Mobile Safari... and it was the full version of the site, where you would browse through books on your iPhone screen in a nice layout absolutely lame design.

Don't worry, Capcom isn't delivering a poorly compressed download of the not-so-great movie to iPhone. Resident Evil: Degeneration (link goes to iTunes store) is a game based on the movie (based on the games)! Capcom's new "3rd-person survival horror shooter" features a combination of virtual d-pad controls and motion controls, including a "tilt-to-reload" feature and the ability to shake the phone to shake off zombies.
The game takes place in Harvardville Airport, which just happens to have been overrun by zombies. Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield must "rescue survivors, unlock puzzles and battle an army of undead." The $6.99 download sounds like the perfect way to both pass the time and deal with your frustration when you're stuck at the airport. Unless it's also full of zombies, in which case you should use the iPhone to call 911 or something.

Content publishing tool being used by band to promote its new album.
The Crystal Method has released an iPhone application that offers content from the band and its new album Divided By Night.
The free app, built using Fluidesign's Mobile Roadie platform, enables fans to purchase the album's first single, Drown in the Now, album graphics, buy upcoming show tickets, and interact with both other fans and the band.
Physical and digital distribution, as well as digital marketing of the album, will be handled by INgrooves.
Robb McDaniels at INgrooves said: "The iPhone app is a great way for Crystal Method fans to connect directly with the band and gain fast, easy access to their exclusive content. This is an example of how to reduce the friction between fan and artist and facilitate a more intimate relationship."

A new version of Baseball Superstars 2009 for the iPhone and iPod Touch will include in-game Coke-branded stadium advertisements.
South Korea-based publisher Gamevil agreed the deal with The Coca-Cola Company earlier this year for its local market, where cans of the drink will promote its games.
Gamevil says the deal for iPhone is the first step towards extending the relationship globally - the Baseball Supertars franchise has sold a cumulative nine million units to date.
Young Soo Choi, Senior Manager of New Business and Alliances at Gamevil, said: "The relationship with Coca-Cola has been phenomenal. We are extremely pleased with the strategic relationship in Korea so far, and wanted to further expand it worldwide.
"The in-game advertisement on Baseball Superstars 2009 is just a small beginning of the collaboration between the two parties.”
