Metaversal Studios Inc. thinks its suggestive iPhone game, Hot Dog Down a Hallway, is being unfairly treated by Apple. According to the Boston Globe, Apple has banned the sale of the game's latest version because it does not meet the company's standards -- which state Apple reserves the right to reject "content or material" it feels "may be found objectionable by...users."
In the game, players launch a hot dog down a corridor attempting to avoid various obstacles, gaining achievements in the process, each with sexually suggestive names. A previous version of the game remains for sale on the store and while it's probably better than those stupid Fart applications, you'd probably be better off spending your money on something else.

It's not exactly one of the first places you'd expect to see Cupcake popping up, but SDG Systems has announced that the Android update (or a developer build of it, specifically) is now available on its Trimble Nomad rugged handheld. That device, in case you missed it, has primarily relied on Windows Mobile for an OS to date, and packs an 806 MHz Marvell PXA320 XScale processor, 128MB of RAM, up to 2GB of storage, CompactFlash and SD card slots for expansion, built-in GPS, and a hot swappable lithium-ion battery that supposedly lasts a whole day on a charge. Anyone looking for an alternative to the G1 will likely want to look elsewhere though, as the Nomad isn't actually a phone, and this particular $1,200+ Android-equipped device is apparently intended specifically for developers looking to test out Android apps on a rugged device.

Just in time for your weekend perusal, Palm Goon (which we half suspect might be a viral site from Palm itself) has uploaded three tours and a FAQ chock-full of new Pre / webOS screens and details, chief among them being confirmation that the Pre does daily automatic backup. We've also got some pretty thorough glimpses of the web browser, Tasks, and Memo applications. Visually, it's quite a beaut -- a very elegant and classy UI that rivals anything we've seen from a certain Cupertino-based company. Of course, functionality remains to be seen, but if Palm and Sprint deliver half as good of a game as they talk, looks like we're in for a real treat.

Nearly 500 students and faculty at Aoyama Gakuin University in Japan will receive free iPhones as part of the school's new Mobile & Net Society Education and Training program. The trial, which is set to begin this fall, will use the iPhone's built in GPS function to determine if the students are present, and use that information to replace traditional methods of taking attendance. The university's announced a deal with provider Softbank Mobile to provide the phones and basic services to all students and staff at the school for no charge. The school also plans on rolling out simple tests and homework assignments using the device. So... is there an app for that, or what?

Square Enix will bring the classic action RPG Secret of Mana to mobile phones next month. If you have an NTT DoCoMo phone (think Docomodake) you can get it for 840 yen.
Only $8.50 for a portable version of Secret of Mana? That’s awesome! Well, maybe. Square Enix hasn’t explained how the controls will work or if the game will have online play over DoCoMo’s mobile network. Online play would totally make Secret of Mana mobile worth a look.

For a long time, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has maintained a stance that the Nintendo DS and Apple's iPhone aren't competing. A stance he seems to have let slide for a day.
Speaking after Nintendo's recent fiscal year report briefing, Iwata sounds like the constant comparisons between the two devices have got to him, as he remarks:
I do not imagine that iPhone will dominate the Nintendo DS market at once. My impression as the person who has used iPhone is, it is very attractive but, frankly, I did not feel that it was designed to be appreciated by a wide variety of people like how Nintendo has been designing its products.
I don't know. I appreciate how the iPhone can make phone calls. My DS can't. Then again, I don't appreciate how there's still no decent Advance Wars clone on Apple's device.
Guess I'll have to keep appreciating both devices, then!

ANALYSIS: Experts from the mobile sector recall the fall of Sharp and the lessons it holds for newcomers
Experts throughout the mobile industry have welcomed the influx of both long forgotten and new vendors to the market, but have warned them that they need to heed the lessons of the past if they are to prosper.
Speaking to PCR this month, experts from Qualcomm, Toshiba and trade magazine Mobile warned that the example of Sharp is one they all must pay attention to.
"Sharp's problem was that it got too close to Vodafone. It did everything Vodafone wanted, so it didn’t invest in new ideas and had no other outlet when the consumers lost interest," managing editor of Mobile, Soheb Panja, told PCR. "That balance is something all the new manufacturers will have to work out as they come back into the market."

As far as I'm aware, the "connectors" and "Unified Storage" referred to here is a new concept for WM7. Unfortunately the job description doesn't go into any details, but in the context of communications, I'm predicting it's a new framework designed to handle all the communication storage needs on a phone in a single, structured and open-access system...If my prediction is correction, as opposed to the current method where each application has its own proprietary storage model (ex. Outlook Mobile, Facebook application, Twitter applications), this new framework would allow applications to store and retrieve any communications data on the phone in a consistent and managed manner, allowing for far richer integration."
We know that Windows Mobile 7 will be a big step forward from the past, and here's a hint as to what may be in store beyond a new UI and multitouch interface. Ironic what a "simple" job ad can reveal - especially about the potential for Zune intregation. Will all this come to pass? Hard to say for sure, but it's fun to speculate. Read on for more!

Japanese gaming stalwart Capcom has become the latest big-name publisher to firmly pin its name on Apple’s iPhone mast with the news that it will release ten titles on the platform in the year ending March 2010.
Reuters reports that the publisher has enjoyed success with the recently released Resident Evil: Degeneration, which brings the popular over-the-shoulder mechanic of global hits RE4 and RE5 to handheld for the first time.
Few publishers enjoy as rich a bank of IPs as Capcom, and if the iPhone version of Resident Evil meets expectations, the publisher is likely to turn to other big-hitting series such as Street Fighter, Final Fantasy, Bionic Commando, Phoenix Wright, Monster Hunter, Lost Planet, Dragon Quest and Devil May Cry.
Furthermore, the company also boasts an incredibly rich retro catalogue that would fit the iPhone’s casual credentials perfectly – think Mega Man, Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts, Mercs, Strider and Dino Crisis.

John Gruber over at Daring Fireball has a pretty good track record when it comes to Apple rumors -- remember his spot-on predictions for the unibody MacBook Pro? -- so when he's got a thing or two to say about all the next-gen iPhone chatter, we listen. While not making any promises, he does say he'd wager quite a bit on a new model coming to WWDC, with about twice the CPU horsepower (and possibly twice the RAM, too) as the current model. He also adds some credence to all that talk of video recording, but makes no mention of potential background apps and plays down any surprise tablet or "iPhone mini" cameos. He goes on to add release date would be sometime in July in 16GB and 32GB varieties. We can't say we're willing to bet against him, but that doesn't mean we'll take his word as gospel. We can safely say, however, that we're anxiously waiting to see what kind of shenanigans Schiller has in store for next month.

ake it for what it's worth (which may be nothing, quite honestly), but a bona fide "iPhone 32GB" placeholder has appeared in the 'Coming Soon' section on T-Mobile Austria's website. Generally speaking, we wouldn't give this kind of slip too much credence, but considering that a similar slip at T-Mobile Germany was accurately foretelling two years ago, we're cautiously optimistic that all those rumors of a more capacious iPhone are legitimate. We hate to remind you that loads of smoke generally leads to fire, but hey, June 8th ain't too far off anyway. Larger screen cap (of the translated-to-English site) is just past the break.

Sony Ericsson's finance team may figure that it needs a wheelbarrow full of cold, hard cash in order to steamroll through the next decade, but we know better than that. What it needs, friends, is Android, and in the worst possible way. At a launch event over in Taiwan this week, SE Asia-Pacific's vice president of marketing Peter Ang was quoted as saying that the outfit's first Android-based smartphone would actually be humming along on Android 2.0. So, there are two ways to take this: one is that Android 2.0 is just around the bend, which would totally rule, but is absolutely unrealistic to believe. The other, more feasible possibility is that SE's first Android-based phone won't hit the market until your next grandchild is born, which definitely doesn't bode well for a handset maker that can't possibly reinvent itself soon enough.

According to an AppleInsider report some folks have dug up information in the iPhone 3.0 beta firmware indicating that Japan's Asahi Kasei will provide the magnetometer hardware for the next generation iPhone due to be announced in June (?) and on sale July 17th (?).
A directory labeled "compass" was found within the iPhone 3.0 firmware file. Within these files there is some information identifying specific details for the magnetometer. "The files identify Asahi Kasei's... [

A couple recent Apple job listings suggest that Apple is working on increasing processing and video abilities on future iPhone models.
The first job listing shows that Apple wants an individual with experience with ARM processors and NEON unit vector to join the team.
Quote:
The successful candidate will have excellent understanding and knowledge of processor architecture, specifically ARM and its vector unit NEON. Additional Intel SSE or PowerPC AltiVec is also very helpful. Being able to use processor micro-architecture to write and deliver fast routines is an essential attribute.
Currently the Apple device utilizing an ARM processor is the iPhone/iPod Touch. The current processor is a ARMv6 processor. The NEON term refers to an instruction set that can accelerate multimedia applications. NEON is specifically for the ARMv7 Cortex processor, the next generation

The infamous Apple tablet may reach consumers as early as 2010 if Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has analyzed things correctly. It is predicted that the tablet might appear in the first half of 2010, have a 7-10 inch screen (remember the 9 in. iPod rumor), have 3g capability, and cost $500 - $700 thanks to cellular carrier subsidization.
In a research note to clients Munster and his team wrote "Between indications from our component contacts in Asia, recent patents relating to multi-touch sensitivity for more complex computing devices, comments from [chief operating officer] Tim Cook on the April 22nd conference call, and Apple's acquisition of P.A. Semi along with other recent chip-related hires, it is increasingly clear that Apple is investing more in its mobile computing franchise."

It's sounding like tap-shooter Resident Evil: Degeneration is just the tip of the iPhone-game iceberg for Capcom. Reuters reports that the company's mobile division intends to release "more than 10" titles on the portable platform by the end of March 2010. The announcement was made by Capcom chief financial officer, Kazuhiko Abe, at the news organization's Global Technology Summit in Tokyo.
Capcom has already released Mega Man 2 for iPhone/iPod touch in addition to last week's RE title. While more of the company's classics would be a welcome addition to the App Store lineup, we can only hope they'll benefit from feedback on the absurdly difficult-to-control MM2. What games would you like to see? Our absolute must-have is Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo.

Sure, EOS Utility will let you control the Canon DSLR of your choice from the comfort of your PC, but what if you want to add one more enticing level of indirection to the equation? Well, sport, for that, you'll need a little app for the iPhone from onOne called DSLR Remote, which connects via WiFi to a utility on your computer -- which is in turn cabled to your camera. It's not on the App Store just yet, but there'll be two versions available: Professional, for an introductory price of $9.99, which allows you to control a host of camera settings, and the $1.99 Lite, which simply lets you fire the shutter. The coolest part might be Live View compatibility, which would make a great poor man's security camera (if you can call a 5D Mark II a poor man's anything) -- if only it weren't for the instant rejection the app would face had they made it 3G-compatible, right?
