The day you've been waiting for is here. Sprint just announced that the Pre will cost $199.99 after $100 mail-rebate and 2-year contract and will launch on June 6th as rumored this morning. The phone will go on sale nationwide (US-only for the moment) at Sprint stores, Best Buy, Radio Shack, and select Wal-Mart stores. The Pre will be available under Sprint's Everything Data or Business Essentials with Messaging and Data plans. Accessories include the optional $69.99 Touchstone charging dock kit that includes the $49.99 dock and $19.99 Pre back cover. June 6th, that's two days before the WWDC keynote. Poor Apple.

The verdict is still out on whether what we've been seeing is indeed some precursor to Android 2.0 "Donut," or (more likely) some elaborate HTC skin designed bring HTC's Android home screen experience up to par with its extensive Windows Mobile reskinning. Either way, things are shaping up quite nicely for the HTC Hero, with another leaked build showing widget functionality galore, including weather widgets that actually show the weather. Interestingly, this isn't a complete replacement for the existing home screen, since in the add widget dialogue you can pick an HTC Gadget, a Google Gadget, or other regular things like Shortcuts, and most everything seems to cohabitate well in the example video. With the rate these leaks are coming, we're guessing we'll be hearing more about the HTC Hero before too long, and if not we've always got the neauveau cocktail jazz electro crossover stylings of Air to keep us calm. Video is after the break.

Japanese site AppBank managed to grab some video of what is allegedly Wolfenstein RPG, which apparently leaked early on the App store. From the video, which we've placed after the break, it looks like the iPhone version is graphically improved from its original mobile incarnation.
We've reached out to EA Mobile for an estimated launch date. If Wolfenstein RPG did actually launch on the AppStore in error, it would appear the game is "finished." We'll update if we hear anything back.
Update: A representative for EA Mobile let us know that the company hasn't announced an official release date for Wolfenstein RPG on iPhone.

If you're a Kondo KHR-2HV hobbyist and the usual choices for headgear all seem a little too safe, you might want to check out this next item. YouTube user 'ogutti' has posted a video of the robot he built using an iPod touch for its control unit and user interface. Details are skint, but apparently the device uses the Robochan app to program and play back the robot's various movements. At the very least, this thing does have a rather cute animated visage -- although it does seem a little too top heavy for any serious tournament fighting. See it in action for yourself after the break.

We're getting close to WWDC, which means the Apple rumor mill is nearing redline -- today it's BusinessWeek saying AT&T's working on cheaper iPhone data plans. It's not clear exactly how that would play out, but the most popularly-discussed option is a $20 "limited-access" plan potentially offered alongside a cheaper iPhone to be introduced at WWDC -- an option that's almost certainly being discussed as the two companies sort out that exclusivity extension. Of course, we're extremely curious to see what "limited access" means, given AT&T's recent SlingPlayer debacle -- cheap certainly isn't worth it if you're not allowed to do anything worthwhile. Phil, you have anything to say?

Emerging markets are the target for web-optimised 2730 classic, 2720 fold and 7020.
The three new devices have been designed to support Nokia's emerging market services, including Nokia Life Tools and Ovi Mail.

This one's a bit of a mystery, but it's certainly a tantalizing one: Haykuro of xdadevelopers fame has posted video of what purports to be the Android build off of HTC's upcoming Hero device. What's special about it is a reworked interface, which shows a lot of polish from icons to built-in apps to general interface elements... and maybe just a bit of TouchFLO flair. There are also new features like a login / logout menu for "social networks" in the settings menu. While the device lists the firmware as 1.5, there's a small possibility that some of this new look and feel could be headed for Android 2.0 "Donut," or perhaps HTC just feels like it needs to diverge from the pack a bit now that other manufacturers are starting to drop their own Android handsets. Check out the incredibly epic video after the break.

Whether it be case materials and design, native iPhone app development, or video support on the iPod, Apple's not a company to apologize for drastically (and suddenly) changing course. Strategically that's to the company's benefit, since it keeps the competition guessing; for consumers, though, it's a nightmare trying to figure out whether the device you buy today will be dismissed as passé in a heavily-liveblogged Jobs or Schiller press conference the next week. iPhone OS versions 2.0 and 3.0 have gone a long way toward addressing some of the iPhone's well-publicized shortcomings -- clipboard support, MMS, better orientation change support, notifications, the list goes on -- but one biggie that Apple has so far refused to take out of the penalty box is background app support.
A number of sources this week are reporting that Apple is now investigating ways to make background processes work, though it's apparently early in development and the company is still investigating options; one would be to limit background apps to a total of two, another would require that background-capable apps meet certain criteria (presumably to limit processor utilization) before getting App Store approval. The company has invested a lot of time -- way too much time, actually -- crafting its push notification infrastructure designed specifically to get around the need for background processes in many common cases, which makes it seem terribly unlikely that they'd reverse so quickly. While it's true that every other modern smartphone platform supports them, Apple has all but perfected the art and science of ignoring its competitors' game plans.
Any way you slice it, it's a near certainty that the next-gen iPhone will bump processor and memory specs, which makes background processing a more palatable concept -- thing is, battery technology has barely evolved in over a decade, and that's ultimately the roadblock to letting an iPhone (or any other cordless device) run wild. What's more, requiring the user to choose their own two background apps seems totally counter to the "it just works" mantra that rules the iPhone's dumbed-down interface.
Hell has a tendency to freeze over in Cupertino, though, so we can't rule it out.

A Japanese company called Freebit has released ServersMan, an app that turns the iPhone into a web server. It debuted in Japan in February, has now been launched in the US, and is being touted as a 'Personal Data Center.' Freebit also has a video with additional information on server-enabling your iPhone. 'Once the app is installed, PCs on the internet can access the iPhone to upload or download files through a browser or they can use the webDAV protocol. If the PC and the iPhone are on the same network, the PC can connect directly. If they are on separate networks, then FreeBit's VPN software will engage the connection.

Between Android and the myriad of LiMo builds out there, we're not sure the world needs another open-source phone operating system, but Nokia and Intel seem to think differently: the two behemoths have joined up to develop oFono, a Linux-based mobile OS for GSM handsets. We don't know many details, but he project seems to be pulling people from both Intel's Moblin initiative and Nokia's Maemo project, and job postings from a "major handset company" searching for a GUI designer in either Dallas or San Jose have appeared, so it sounds like something big is in the works. We'll see.

Nokia has released firmware updates to version 20.175 for the N85 and N79. Besides bug fixes and minor tweaks/updates (SIM contacts, keypad illumination, stability improvements), the new firmware brings "flip to silent" for calls and alarms, email wizard and notifications on the home screen. The update is available via OTA (type *#0000# on the home screen and select "Check for updates") and, as always, via the NSU.

We already know that AT&T prevented Apple from approving SlingPlayer before and was the main culprit in restricting it to Wi-Fi ONLY. Their recent statement proclaims the restrictions to be a modest way to prevent the network from collapsing. Well, most people trust them because of obvious reasons, but it seems to be the incomplete truth!
As per a tipster, AT&T's been working on it's OWN application named "i-verse" that performs similar task as SlingPlayer.
This app works with their U-verse TV solution (like slingbox) and loads the "DVRed" shows onto your iPhone at home or stream them over internet on 3G network! The app has already been demoed privately last year

All the hopes of Steve Jobs' early return from the "holiday" for the WWDC keynote were ruined when Apple officially announced the keynote to be delivered by Phil Schiller, Apple's Marketing Vice President. With this announcement many believe that the new iPhone will no longer be announced at WWDC ...
According to Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster, Apple won't be unveiling any new iPhone hardware this WWDC. In fact, the whole event will be surrounding software ONLY. This has become a bit obvious after Apple's announcement of developer's preview of Snow Leopard. Apple won't be willing to launch the new iPhone and leave the Snow Leopard with less audience... Therefore, it might be possible that the WWDC keynote will be [s]boring[/s] like the

Though we do not follow every Apple lawsuit closely - there are dozens of them - this one seems to be rather funny!
A company named Tune Hunter, Inc. filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Apple and several other companies including Samsung, Napster, Motorola, Gracenote, LG Electronics, Pantech Wireless, and Cellco Partnership (Verizon Wireless) just because they allowed the download of Shazam - a music recognition app that infringes their "Music Identification System" patent - on their mobile platforms!
In the patent, the company described it's application as relating "to a music identification/purchasing system, specifically to a method for marking the time and the name of the radio station in portable device such as a key holder, watch, cellular phone, beeper or the like which will allow the user to learn via internet or regular...
