A new App on the iPhone serves up details from the Steam community to your iPod Touch or phone.
Gears includes three pages of information from Steam accounts for $3.
The App has you type in a Steam nickname and then displays the user's avatar, location, online status and bi-weekly gameplay stats. Another page breaks down the user's friends and their current online status, which is updated automatically.
Finally, the Games page lets you view the user's page, gameplay time and hop to the Steam website to read up on the game or purchase it.
The interface does a good job of streamlining a lot of data from Steam, though it would be nice to see it incorporate new functions, like chat or messaging, in future iterations. Since you don't need to type in a password to access a user's account information, I suspect any deep functionality would have to come with the help of Valve.

That's according to a new survey by Japanese middleware developer CRI. Of the the 102 people surveyed, 87 per cent said that they were interested in developing for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
Eighteen per cent had already released games on the platform, while 16 per cent were currently working on titles. Thirty-eight per cent said that their company wanted to develop for the platform but had not put any plans into action yet.
The survey also asked opinions of smartphones other than the iPhone platform. 47 per cent were interested in Android, while 39 per cent were more interested in Windows Mobile. Only 2 per cent voted for Symbian, and only 6 per cent for Palm's new Pre handset.
From a business perspective, the top three reasons for wanting to develop for the iPhone were being able to release simultaneously in over 80 countries (64.7 per cent), the size of the market (55.9 per cent) and the ease of purchasing from the iTunes store (42.2 per cent).
The top three reasons from a development perspective were that it was a portable device (71.6 per cent), that the touch-screen was an intuitive interface method (71.6 per cent) and the multi-touch capabilities (55.9 per cent)
50 per cent of those that responded said that the biggest drawback of iPhone development was that development had to be done on Macs, while 42.2 per cent felt like there weren't enough sources of information (42.2 per cent) and that English was the base language for developer support (39.2 per cent).

According to a recent research report by Gartner, the overall mobile sales decreased this year with a fall of 9.4 percent. The number of sets sold dropped from 294.3 millions in Q1 2008 to 269.1 in Q1 2009. On the other hand, smartphone market share has continued to increase - setting a record of 13.5 percent of overall mobile sales - indicating a clear shift in the market trend.
Apple is the company that has benefitted most from this shift. There's a huge increase in iPhone market share, even more than 100 percent! While Apple controlled just 5.3 percent market share for smartphones in the first quarter 2008, its market share has boomed to an extraordinary 10.8 percent in the first quarter of 2009. With this increase, Apple maintains third place in the smartphone market falling short of Nokia and RIM.

In contrast to his normal high-contrast PR coverage, Sega’s speedy mascot Sonic the Hedgehog has surprisingly kept below the radar and sprung a surprise by making a sudden appearance on the Apple App Store.
The game is seemingly a more-or-less straight conversion of the 1991 original Mega Drive offering and uses on-screen controls to direct and jump your character.
Two views are available - one stretches the image to fit the iPhone's entire screen, with transparent control overlays, whilst the second maintains the original 320x224 resolution by adding a border.
Sega’s debut iPhone release, Super Monkey Ball, topped the Apple download charts for several weeks and has proved one of the most popular all-time games for the system.
Whether Sonic can rival the accelerometer-friendly conversion of Monkey Ball is yet to be seen, but if it does be sure to expect further Sonic titles on the system soon.
Sonic the Hedgehog is available now and costs £3.49.

Now that everything here at MMi is running again back to the news
If appadvice's source can be believed the next-gen iPhone will be available for purchase on July 17th. There will be major hardware updates across the board as well. Can't tell if this information is real or not as the most of what is mentioned is either common sense or rumors we have already seen and many are doubtful at best. The report, however, does include some new rumors! Your next iPhone could have all of the following:
32GB and 16GB to replace current capacities
This is a basic upgrade that one would expect with a new Apple product.
$199 and $299 price-points to be maintained
Also expected, subsidization makes the iPhone fairly affordable, helps Apple sell product, take over your life, the world . . .
3.2 Megapixel camera
As rumored here.

Unnamed Apple executives hinted in a recent meeting that they are looking to differentiate different iPhone models by software rather than hardware.
According to Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner in a recent meeting Apple executives said that "[The] iPhone is still in its early days and could gain share by: providing more functionality, lowering prices, growing geographically, or segmenting the market with different models.” When pushed for further details the continued saying that “Segmentation would focus on software.”
It sounds plausible that Apple might be looking to do something like this. Creating different models of iPhones by simply focusing on different types of applications would save Apple money as they would only have to produce essentially one device. They could also charge lower prices for models with less software features and more for models with all the extras.
While it may sound plausible I don't think this is a particularly good idea and Apple would be making a mistake by even considering it. The whole concept sounds strangely similar to when iPhone Touch 1g users had to pay $20 to upgrade their software with a few basic extra apps. Apple stopped that bs with the iPod Touch 2g

We've already seen Symbian ported to an Atom-based PC for kicks, but it looks like Symbian Foundation boss Tim Holbrow already has some considerably grander plans, and says that we could actually see some Symbian-running netbooks in stores before too long. As TechRadar reports, when asked if we'll see Symbian netbooks on the market, Holbrow replied "I think so, yep," before intriguingly adding that he thinks the real question is "will netbooks carry on being netbooks?" Apparently, Holbrow sees netbooks becoming nothing more than a "single processor" that people carry around and use to access data from various sources -- letting folks use a wireless keyboard and display at home and have the UI adjust automatically, for instance, or what Holbrew calls "superconvergence." Of course, Holbrow isn't making any firm promises just yet, although he does say he can "see world in two or three years' time where mobile devices start to eat into the world of laptops and netbooks."

Pocket Gamer has been getting its fingers inside the unique new Zeebo console — a sub $200 system designed for emerging markets — to discover it's based on a hacked version of the T-Mobile G1 Google phone. It effectively consists of the chipset from the HTC Dream/G1 Android phone, plus some extra I/O to deal with TV screens, controllers and the like. If this gaming, entertainment and educational console for the billion-strong middle classes in emerging economies such as Brazil and India catches on, HTC could become a serious global gaming force. Qualcomm's Mike Yuen said in an interview, 'We have this mass market chipset, and our next-generation chipset is getting faster. What we announced, [Qualcomm's] Snapdragon [chipset], is going to netbooks; it bumps it a few notches above that. The cell phone business, including us, is never going to build a processor that's going to match or surpass what the video game guys do. So, why chase that?

Apple sold 3.9 million handsets during the quarter to more than double its market share, says Gartner.
Smartphone sales hit 36.4 million units in 1Q09, representing a 12.7 per cent increase from 12 months earlier.
In fact, smartphone sales represented 13.5 per cent of all mobile device sales in 1Q09, compared with 11 per cent in 1Q08.
Gartner attributes the trend to good sales at Research In Motion and Apple, with the latter more than doubling its market share from 5.3 per cent to 10.8 per cent.
This means Apple is the third-ranked smartphone manufacturer by volume.
Nokia continues to boss the market, however, with a 41.2 per cent share from nearly 14 million units sold.
This compares to 14.6 million units and a 45.1 per cent share in 1Q08.
Symbian accounted for 49.3 per cent of worldwide smartphone operating systems (OS) market share in 1Q09, down from 56.9 per cent a year earlier.
The full 1Q09 global smartphone rankings are as follows:
Company, Sales (units 000), Share (%)
Nokia, 14,991.2, 41.2
Research In Motion, 7,233.6, 19.9
Apple, 3,938.8, 10.8
HTC, 1,957.3, 5.4
Fujitsu, 1,387.0, 3.8
Others, 6,896.4, 18.8

Apple iPhone Apps, a site with no known track record (which is also down right now) just leaked a July 17 release date and a bunch of specs for the next iPhone. They look fishy.
The July 17 release could technically be possible, since it's on a Friday and Apple's been releasing their iPhones on Fridays, but the specs are weird.- 32GB and 16GB storage (up from the current 16GB and 8GB models)
- $199 and $299 price points to be maintained
- 3.2-megapixel camera (up from the current 2-megapixel camera)
- Video-recording and editing capabilities
- Ability to send a picture & video via MMS
- Discontinuation of the metal band surrounding the edge of the device
- OLED screen
- 1.5 times the battery life of the current models
- Double the RAM and processing power
- Built-in FM transmitter
- Apple logo on back will glow
- Rubber-tread backing
- Sleeker design
- Built-in compass
- The camera, GPS, compass and Google map combined will identify photo and inform about photo locations
- Turn-by-turn directions
So what's weird? The OLED screen, for one. The 1.5x battery life, for two. And a rubber-tread backing/sleeker design for three. It's still quite cost-prohibitive to use OLED screens on devices, and it's difficult to see how Apple could shrink down the size of the device to make it "sleeker" while at the same time making the battery 1.5x. Maybe because they're using an OLED screen?
It's all very pie in the sky, so don't take it as literal proof that the next iPhone will have this. And the rubber tread backing may or may not be this leaked image from MacRumors, which isn't quite rubber, but more of a matte feel than the current version.

Developers received an email from Apple inviting me to try out the first push notification application this afternoon as reported by sayam.
Quote:
As a developer actively working with iPhone OS 3.0 beta, we would like your help in testing the Apple Push Notification service. We have selected a pre-release version of the Associated Press app for iPhone OS 3.0 to create a high-volume test environment for our servers.
The Associated Press app is very well done and the push notification is very good addition to the news alert app. When you first launch the app it give you a setup menu and a pop up, requesting permissions to use push notifications appears.

A guy named Sfreddo Marco discovered an exclusive iTunes screen after updating his phone to the latest beta of the iPhone 3.0 firmware. While upgrading, iTunes got stuck with an error which unknowingly gave him access to hidden settings!
After the upgrade was successfully completed, the user found a new section dedicated to Nike+ in iTunes 8.2 with his iPhone connected. iTunes 8.2 gives user the ability to create Nike+ accounts and see the history of old sessions. A menu for "Sensor" was found as well which seems quite interesting. The Nike + tab and the Sensor menu hint at the use of Nike + technology for the upcoming iPhone. Nike + is currently exclusive for iPod Touch 2G only! It also appears that it might be possible to connect to other external sensors, switchable through a menu.
It is suspected that these features can be enabled with simple plist tweaking but the correct edits have yet to be discovered.

For years analysts have been insisting that Apple must introduce a cheaper iPhone, and soon. So, when Business Week heard that cheaper plans were coming, it reported the news in a positively giddy tone. But, I'm convinced that this is an under-the-radar move to shift to tiered data plans. Everyone who loves their all-you-can-eat iPhone data: enjoy it while it lasts.

Well, what do you know: it really does exist. Apple's at last showing off push notifications outside the clutches of Cupertino, with registered iPhone developers getting a special version of the Associated Press app to test out on their super fine iPhones running the latest and greatest iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5. Devs are instructed to let Apple know if they don't receive notifications from the app within 48 hours, and it sounds like this is an ideal setting to test out the server and make sure everything is humming along nicely before us proles start choking up the network with our inane Twitter noodlings.
