Now that Apple has introduced the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3, it's time for some of the older models to get a price cut. After announcing the new tablets, Phil Schiller, Apple's senior VP of worldwide marketing, also revealed that the original iPad Air, iPad mini andiPad mini with Retina display, will be sticking around once the newer versions start to ship at "the end of next week." As a result, the iPad mini, iPad mini 2 and iPad Air now start off at $249/£199, $299/£239 and $399/£319, respectively, for the 16GB (WiFi) versions. On the other hand, the newly unveiled iPad mini 3 will cost $399/£319, while the iPad Air 2 is going to be $499/£399 -- both with 16GB of storage and WiFi-only. Like always, if you want to add a 4G/LTE to that, you'll have to shell out $130/£100 extra per iPad.

Unlike last month's Apple event, today's shindig was held in a tiny auditorium on the company's campus, nary a single gigantic white box in sight. Arguably, the size of the venue matched the importance of the products being announced -- minor iPad and iMac refreshes don't exactly command the same kind of attention as revamped iPhones and Apple's introduction into the wearables market. This doesn't mean the latest version of the iPad Air and iPad mini aren't worth a closer look, of course; they may be just another iteration of the series, but if you're in the market for a new tablet, there are a few new features to be aware of.

Ever wish that you could just whip out your Android device and harass a passer-by to play games with you? It's the sort of thing that Nintendo 3DS users, for example, have been using thanks to that company's StreetPass feature, but, until now, hasn't been available on Google's smartphones. Now, however, the company has an added an update to its games infrastructure that enables "ambient, real-time" games with more than one user - so long that the game relies upon Google's home-grown multiplayer backend. Still, maybe don't sprint into the street and start challenging people to a duel, because they might get the wrong idea.

Another Apple event has come and gone, and there's still no MacBook Air with a Retina display. I won't blame you if you're frustrated -- now that there's a 5K iMac, the Air is Cupertino's last screen-packing computer to ship without an extreme-resolution display. For that matter, competitors haven't had qualms about releasing their own ultraportable laptops with extra-crisp visuals. So, what gives? Is Apple holding back? The company may not be offering answers, but it's most likely that the technology needed to make a Retina-equipped Air simply isn't ready for prime time. As much as Apple would like the Air to hop on the high-res bandwagon, it may have to wait until a whole bunch of pieces fall into place. Read on to see what I mean.

Last year, both the iPad Air and Retina iPad mini used nearly the same A7 chip that you saw in the iPhone 5s. That wasn't exactly a problem, but it was a bit disappointing if you were hoping for some extra oomph in bigger iOS devices. You may not have to worry about getting similar parts this year, though. Taiwanese site Apple.club.tw has postedphotos that reportedly show the next big iPad's motherboard, including what looks like a shiny new A8X processor. If history is any indication, that X means that it's a tangibly faster upgrade to the iPhone CPU that could involve improved graphics, a higher clock speed or other new (though not revolutionary) tricks. The club also claims that the new board has 2GB of RAM (twice as much memory as you see in the current iPad), although it's hard to verify this without a closer look. This probably won't prompt an upgrade if you're happy with the tablet you have -- assuming it's accurate in the first place, of course -- but it may give you something extra to look forward to at Apple's October 16th event.

Apple has flattened the design of just about every interface it makes, but the iTunes Store has remained largely impervious to those changes -- reflections, drop shadows and extruded buttons abound. All that is likely to change soon, however. According to9to5Mac, those trying out the iTunes 12 beta are now seeing a super-flat iTunes Store layout that mirrors what you've seen in iOS, OS X Yosemite and iTunes 12 itself. The carousel highlighting new content is no longer full of pseudo-3D effects, and most of the buttons have been reduced to simple wireframes. A few elements are reportedly missing as of this writing, but it won't be surprising if the new-look storefront gets some stage time on October 16th.

For a company that's obsessed with secrecy, it's no surprise to see that Apple imposes tight restrictions on what its suppliers can say. If your company leaks a product, or starts boasting about producing components for a future iOS device, then you'll be asked to pay a fine of no less than $50 million. That's chump change for a company like Samsung, but a fortune for smaller outfits that may produce only one or two small pieces. Speaking of which, this fact only emerged thanks to GT Advanced Technologies, which has just filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after deciding to close and sell-off its loss-making sapphire crystal manufacturing facilities.

It shouldn't be surprising that not even a month after Microsoft purchasedMinecraft developer Mojang, there is word that Minecraft: Pocket Edition will find a new home on the Windows Phone platform. "Yes, Minecraft: Pocket Edition *is* coming to the Windows Phone," tweeted Jens Bergensten, the game's lead developer.
That's good news for Windows Phone owners, but don't get too excited just yet. While the port is in running condition,"there's still much to do before any release," Bergensten wrote. So far, Bergensten has refrained from speculating any release window or target.

Despite the introduction of custom keyboards, Notification Center widgets and lots more, Apple users aren't taking to iOS 8. According to stats displayed on the company's developer portal, the proportion of iPhone and iPad owners currently running the latest version on their devices stands at 47 percent, only an increase of 1 percentage point from two weeks ago. By this point last year, iOS 7 uptake was already hovering around 60 percent, according to analytics firm Fiksu. We can only speculate, but it seems likely a combination of very large install files, the bungled point updates, and the dropping of iPhone 4 support could be reason enough for many users to stick with what they know, for now. Or maybe they're just paranoid.

It's only been a month since the world's press descended on the Flint Center for the Performing Arts to see Tim Cook reveal a pair of new iPhones, and Apple's already calling everyone back again. Invites to an October 16th event at the company's Cupertino headquarters have just started making the rounds -- if rumor mill's ceaseless whispers hold true, we'll be getting a eyeful of a new iPad Air and some new Mac computers, along with a few software notes to round out the package.

If you're using iOS, you'd better not get too attached to your favorite unofficial game emulator -- there's a real chance that you won't have an easy way to load it before long. The GBA4iOS team has noticed that the iOS 8.1 beta fixes a loophole that lets you install third-party emulators and other unapproved apps simply by rolling back the date on your device. This won't prevent you from installing emulators if you're willing to jailbreak, but you'll have to give up the luxuries afforded by official support (such as timely OS updates) if you want to relive your gaming glory days on an iPhone.

There's a lot to look forward to in Android's next major update, but hardware nerds are focusing in one one key feature: official support for 64-bit mobile chips. It's the mobile OS' inevitable future, and chip-makers have been preparing for it for quite awhile. Now app developers can jump in, too: Google announced today that a x86 64-bit Android L developer preview emulator image is available for developers that want to take their apps to the next generation. Not every dev will need to rebuild, however -- apps built in Java will automatically benefit from the 64-bit release's increased accessibility to memory and registers. Choose another language? Well, you'll need to recompile: head over to the source to start testing your apps in 64-bit.

Would you buy an Apple Watch if the fashion industry named it the "it gadget" of 2015, even if you couldn't care less about what it can do? What about if it became a cover model? That's exactly what is happening, as it's slated to grace the cover of Vogue China's November issue, merely a month after it made its first public appearance at Paris Fashion Week. Clearly, Cupertino wants to present it as a chic device for the tech-savvy fashionista. According to Vogue China EIC Angelica Cheung, she met with Apple CEO Tim Cook and head designer Jony Ive way before the watch's September 9 unveiling, hinting that the company always meant to put some focus on fashion when it comes to marketing this particular product. If you're wondering which variant gets the honor, it's the fancy 18-karat gold one (check out the image after the break), though you'll see other versions in the editorial spread inside.

With how many of Google's core apps are getting updated to the new, flatter Material Design, the release of Android L can't be too much further away. While we wait for that, however, the Google Play redesign leaked not too long ago is available for sideloading right now, as spotted by Droid Life. With it, the "What's New" section's been moved back to the top of the store and you'll now be able to create device-specific profiles (like one for phones and another for tablets) for restoring a custom set of apps per gizmo-type. If you'd rather not wait your turn for the update from Mountain View, DL has the APK, whileAndroid Police has a smattering of screenshots if you want an advance look of what you're getting into. If you haven't started a betting pool for when Android L will hit, now just might be the time.

To celebrate the launch of the Lumia 830 in the UK and all of the Trek-flavored nerdiness going down at Destination Star Trek in London, Microsoft has taught given its virtual assistant a crash course in the ways of Qo'nos -- by which we mean Cortana can now speak a little Klingon. All you'll have to do is ask, though the first thing the xenolinguists among you will probably notice that her and vocabulary and pronunciation are just awful.SlashGear also adds that Cortana responds when you refer to her as "Number One" -- Commander Riker can't be too pleased about that one -- as well as when you tell her to beam you up or "set phasers to stun". The smarts enabling Cortana's new behavior haven't started making the rounds yet outside of the UK yet, but a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to us those Starfleet commands will work in the US in the coming weeks. In the mean time, there are still other ways to get a feel for Redmond's Trekkie credentials: remember, that Bing's Translator can kinda-sorta tackle textual Klingon too.
