Every time Apple holds one of its keynotes, we think to ourselves, "Maybe this is the year they'll kill off the iPod classic." Finally, after a years-long stay of execution, Apple's oldest living media player is going the way of the dodo. The company just reopened its online store after announcing two new iPhones and a smartwatch, and the iPod classic is conspicuously absent from the iPod section. The remaining options include the shuffle, nano and touch at the high-end, with the max amount of storage being 64GB. If you're of a certain age, then, you can get ready to tell your grandchildren about the days when people carried 160GB of music in their pocket instead of streaming it all from the cloud. Oh, and get ready to explain what a spinning hard drive is, too.

There are almost more mobile phones on the planet than there are humans, according to a new report.
There will be 7.3 billion mobile phones on the planet by the end of this year, up from six billion now, claims a study by the International Telecommunications Union.
Comparatively, the United Nations estimates the world population currently stands at 7.243 billion.
Mark Roden, CEO of mobile top-up provider Ding, said: "Mobile phones have the ability to drastically improve lives in some of the poorest parts of the world where communications are restricted.”
The news comes as analyst IDC estimates worldwide phablet shipments will surpass tablets in 2015.
It reckons worldwide phablet shipments (smartphones with screen sizes from 5.5 to less than 7 inches) will reach 175 million units worldwide in 2014, passing the 170 million portable PCs expected to ship during the same period. Next year, total phablet volumes will top 318 million units, surpassing the 233 million tablets forecast to ship in 2015.
"With Apple expected to join the space in the coming weeks, we anticipate even more attention on phablets as larger screen smartphones become the new norm," said Melissa Chau, Senior Research Manager with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker.
IDC expects phablets to grow from 14 per cent of the worldwide smartphone market in 2014 to 32.2 per cent in 2018.

The iPhone 6 is set to be unveiled on September 9th, and a queue has already started forming outside NYC's flagship Apple store.
Two people were so desperate to be first in line that they have paid $2,500 to another pair in order to swap places and secure the top spot.
Brian Ceballo and Joseph Cruz from US electronic reseller and pre-owned specialist BuyBackWorld were originally first in line, but sold their places to Jason and Moon Ray for $1,250 each. The Rays are promoting a VideoMedicine iPhone app that allows patients to Skype with doctors, reports CNBC.
It's the fifth year Ceballo has waited in line with Cruz, and he reckons he's made $7,000 waiting for Apple launches, as well as substantially growing his social media following.
New reports also suggest that rock band U2 will have some involvement in the iPhone 6 press event and launch next week.
Music Promotor Stephen Browne has leaked a photo which allegedly shows the band shooting a video for the event.
It is thought that the iPhone 6 might come pre-loaded with U2’s new album.
There has been speculation that a two-story structure that has been recently built outside the Flint Center - the September 9th event site - may be a stage for the band.
Apple’s iPhone 6 is rumoured to come with a 4.7-inch display, 10MP camera, NFC connectivity and humidity, pressure and temperature sensors.
Elsewhere in the news today, mobile accessory etailer Mobile Fun has unveiled what it claims are the first genuine leather iPhone 6 cases. The firm has also revealed that there will be two devices released on September 9th - the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6L.

Ouya is looking to be acquired, and it's in talks with Google, Amazon and a few Chinese companies, including Riot Games owner Tencent, Re/code reports. Re/code's sources say there aren't any offers on the table yet, but talks are proceeding. Ouya sees acquisition, rather than another funding round, as the better option, the report says.
China opened itself up to the wider world of gaming when early this year it lifted a 14-year ban on foreign console sales. Microsoft plans to launch the Xbox One in China on September 23, and both Sony and Nintendo have announced plans to launch hardware in the country.

It's been some time since we heard from the Open webOS project, but work is still ongoing. The port has changed names in the last year to go by LuneOS, and the first release under the new name is now available. This particular version is called "Affogato," and while it supports the HP TouchPad, Nexus 4, Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 (2012 with WiFi), the team says that going forward it's focusing just on the Nexus 4 and TouchPad. Owners of other devices don't have to give up their card-flicking dreams though, as it hopes others will step up to work on ports for other hardware (the OnePlus One above is just showing a screenshot as an example). If you're expecting the features of Android or iOS it's still a long way from that, but the team promises a focus on the community and monthly updates. If you're willing to give it a shot, install instructions are here.

OUYA's remained relatively quiet over the past few months, aside from making content-focused announcements here and there -- such as OUYA Everywhere and the expansion of it. That said, the gaming startup, once a Kickstarter sensation, could be making a very big splash in the near future. Re/code is now reporting OUYA is in the middle of acquisition talks with "multiple big players" in the US and China, citing sources familiar with the matter. Chinese companies said to have had discussions with OUYA are Xiaomi and Tencent, among others; meanwhile, here Stateside, Amazon and Google reportedly took part in "some engagement" over a possible sale. Interestingly enough, though, Re/code notes that these outfits are primarily interested in the sale to acquire members of OUYA's staff, rather than the business stemming from its tiny game consoles. Only time will tell if anything ends up actually happening -- but as they say, where there's will, there's a way.

By now, you've likely read at least one of the many rumors surrounding what's become known as the iWatch. Well, according to The Wall Street Journal, you can add a few more details to the fray. That outlet is reporting that whenever Apple's smartwatch arrives -- which has been tipped as no sooner than 2015 -- it will be NFC equipped. The prevailing sentiment is that inclusion of wireless connectivity that can be used to pair with other devices or sort things like mobile payments means Cupertino has more lofty expectations that just fitness and health for the gadget. Of course, the current iPhone doesn't have said feature, but rumblings indicate that it could (finally) be inside the next model. What's more,WSJ goes on to say that the so-called iWatch will come in two sizes that both have curved displays and exercise-tracking chops. With a reported 2015 arrival, we may not hear much about the wearable at next week's phone event. But who knows, Apple's been known to have a few tricks up its sleeve when it comes product-focused affairs in the past.

Now that we're nearing Apple's September 9th reveal, more and more details about the event are starting to leak out. According to The New York Times, the new and bigger iPhones will have a one-handed mode that can be toggled on or off to make their large screens easier to use. The new phones (and yes, there might be more than one) will reportedly come in 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch variants, you see, and both are a lot larger than the current model's 4-inch screens. While we've yet to find out what the mode can do, it could very well be similar to comparable features in large Android devices.
