Microsoft it set to enter the wearable tech market within the next few weeks with its own smartwatch.
Forbes has reported that ‘sources close to the project’ say the device will passively track the wearer’s heart rate and will work across different mobile platforms.
It is thought that Microsoft is working on developing apps for Windows Phone, iOS and Android to support users with notifications.
The smartwatch will mark the company’s first foray into the wearable tech market and it thought to have a battery that lasts more than two days on a single charge.
Last week, Microsoft revealed that one million users have already signed up to its Windows 10 Technical Preview. The latest operating system was unveiled last month and is expected to launch in 2015
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was criticised earlier this month on social media after making comments about women’s pay. When asked for his advice to women who are uncomfortable asking for a promotion or pay rise, Nadella responded: "It’s not really about asking for the raise, but knowing and having faith that the system will actually give you the right raises as you go along.â€
He has since clarified his stance on the issue, tweeting: “Was inarticulate re how women should ask for raise. Our industry must close gender pay gap so a raise is not needed because of a bias.â€

Apple has launched its contactless payment service, Apple Pay, in the US today (October 20th).
Apple Pay enables iPhone 6 users, and eventually Apple Watch users, to pay for goods via their device.
So far there are over 220,000 stores and apps accepting the payment option including MacDonald’s, Nike, Foot Locker, Toys R Us, and Subway.
More stores, such as Staples, Urban Outfitters and the Disney Store, are all on board to accept Apple Pay later this year.
Apple Pay supports credit and debit cards from the three major payment networks, American Express, MasterCard and Visa.
Once a user has set up their Apple Pay account, all they have to do is hold their iPhone near the contactless reader while keeping a finger on Touch ID.
For shopping in stores, Apple Pay will work with iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and with Apple Watch, upon availability.
For online shopping within apps, Apple Pay is available on iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air 2, and iPad Mini 3.
Apple has not yet announced when its contactless payment service will be available in other territories.
Apple announced its new iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 tablets last week. Both devices are now available for customers to pre-order from Currys/PC Word, where the retailer has ensured the devices will be available from Thursday, October 23rd.

The official Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade for your phone may be weeks away, but Google has delivered all the ingredients for you to make Lollipop-ready apps. There's also a new round of Material Design guidelines and assets to make sure apps look at home in Google's flatter aesthetic. This won't help much if you just want to try all the whiz-bang features, but you'll definitely want to hit the source links if you're a software creator.

Well, it's Monday, and that can only mean one thing: Apple's iOS 8.1 update has finally gone live for your installing pleasure. To recap, the new software -- which is debuting just over a month since iOS 8 first hit -- brings back once-trashed favorites like the Camera Roll, and strengthens the connection between your iPhone, iPad and Yosemite-powered Mac with features like SMS handoff and the uber-impressive Instant Hotspot.

Apple just dropped its 4th quarter earnings a few moments ago, revealing that the folks in Cupertino raked in $42.1 billion in revenue and $8.5 billion in pure profit - more than enough to take care what it might owe in back taxes. More interestingly, the company moved a total of 39.3 million iPhones over the past three months, along with 12.3 million iPads and 5.5 million Macs. Word that Apple's mobile business had a bang-up three months is hardly a shock - a record-breaking 10 million iPhone 6/6 Plusses were sold over its first weekend, which CEO Tim Cook said beat all previous milestones "by a large margin". Here's the thing though: iPad sales didn't just dip from last quarter, they dipped year-over-year, too. In fact, the number of iPads Apple has moved has been on a slow - but steady - decline for the past year.

Good artists copy, great artists steal," Steve Jobs used to say. Having launched a perfectly-timed attack against Samsung and phablets with its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Leonid Bershidsky suggests that the next big thing from Apple will be a tablet-laptop a la Microsoft's Surface Pro 3. "Before yesterday's Apple [iPad] event," writes Bershidsky, "rumors were strong of an upcoming giant iPad, to be called iPad Pro or iPad Plus. There were even leaked pictures of a device with a 12.9-inch screen, bigger than the Surface Pro's 12-inch one. It didn't come this time, but it will.

If you were dead set on ordering the Nexus Player this weekend, you're about to be disappointed. Google has quietly halted pre-orders of its Android TV media hub because it has "not been approved" by the FCC -- the company would be in trouble with US regulators if it took your hard-earned dollars for something it can't ship. There aren't any hints as to when the Nexus Player will get the all-clear, but you can be sure that we'll keep our eyes peeled. Hopefully, the approval arrives before November 3rd so that you can get that Android TV set-top box on time.

As promised, Google today released the full Android 5.0 Lollipop SDK, along with updated developer images forNexus 5, Nexus 7 (2013), ADT-1, and the Android emulator. The latest version of Android isn't available just yet, but the company is giving developers a head start (about two weeks), so they can test their apps on the new platform. To get the latest Android 5.0 SDK, fire up Android SDK Manager and head to the Tools section, followed by latest SDK Tools, SDK Platform-tools, and SDK Build-tools. Select everything under the Android 5.0 section, hit "Install packages...", accept the licensing agreement, and finally click Install. Google also rolled out

A day ahead of the reveal of Apple’s latest iPad, Google has lifted the lid on its new smartphone the Nexus 6 and new tablet the Nexus 9.
Both will be the first devices to run the latest iteration of Android – called Android 5.0 Lollipop.
As the name suggests, the Nexus 6 offers a (actually just under) six-inch screen and is in many ways an inflated version of the Moto X, which is perhaps little surprise as it’s made by Motorola.
Owing to its iPhone 6 Plus-like size, Google will be keeping the Nexus 5 on the market, although it hasn’t indicated any plans to give it a spec boost.
The Nexus 6’s 5.9-inch screen is quad HD and inside is a 2.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, along with a 3,220mAh battery. It will come in 32GB and 64GB varieties and in either white or blue.
The biggest surprise is perhaps the price. While the Nexus 5 and Nexus 10 are amongst the most competitively priced devices on the market, the Nexus 6 will cost a massive $649 without a contract making it one of the most expensive Android phones ever released.
As for the Nexus 9? That offers an 8.9-inch screen (offering 281ppi and 2,048x1,536 pixels) and a dual-core 2.3GHz Nvidia K1 processor, offering 64-but compatibility. Aesthetically it looks very much like a larger Nexus 5
Prices start at $399 for the 16GB wi-fi model and run all the way up to $599 for the 32GB 4G version.
Google has also unveiled its new Nexus Player platform.

Preorders for $99 Android TV set-top box open this week, device goes on sale Nov. 3
[h=3]Google[/h]
Google is partnering with Asus to introduce a new set-top box to its Nexus line of Android-powered devices. The company has announced its new Nexus Player will be available for preorder this Friday.
Beyond being a streaming media device, the Nexus Player will also let users play games on an HDTV with the addition of an optional game pad. It will run Lollipop, the latest Android OS update, on a 1.8GHz quad core Intel Atom processor and requires users have a Wi-Fi connection. It will also sync with users' other devices so they can start playing a game or watching a movie on a phone and pick it up on the Nexus Player, or vice versa.
According to a re/code report, the device will sell for $99, with the controller available separately for $39. Both will launch November 3.

Still hauling that Palm Pre around without a care in the world? Sorry to say but there's a nasty surprise coming your way just after the holidays. HP has quietly announced that it'll pull the plug on the catalog and cloud services that support webOS devices from January 15th of next year. That doesn't mean that your hardware will shut down, but living with the gear is going to get considerably harder. Firstly, you won't be able to purchase, download and restore apps, and you won't be able to restore your phone from a backup either. Setting up a new device has also gone the way of all things, and if you lose your password, you won't be getting it back. This is probably the excuse you need to buy a new phone, but don't worry, because as long as we remember webOS in our hearts, it'll never truly die, okay?

Craig Federighi, Apple's senior VP of software engineering, has just announced that iOS 8.1 will bring Apple Pay compatibility to the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. That's good news, because Apple Pay launches this Monday with support from Starbucks, Macy's, Target and others. It'll also bring back the Camera Roll, which should be good news for iPhone users who missed that feature when it was taken away. Additionally, those who update to the new firmware will get access to the public beta of iCloud Photo Library, which gives you the ability to access the full resolution of all your photos and videos without any downscaling.
The big news though, is that iOS 8.1 will finally bring Continuity compatibility when it comes to SMS and Instant Hotspot (as long as you have OS X Yosemite installed on your Mac, of course). That means you'll be able to make and receive texts from your Mac and get online via your phone's cellular connection. Those with iOS 8 and Yosemite could already enjoy other Continuity features such as handing off a half-composed email from your Mac to your iPad, sharing Keynote slides and making and receiving calls.
And if all of that sounds intriguing to you, well good news: iOS 8.1 will be available this coming Monday.
Update: We previously mentioned that iOS 8.1 will add Continuity compatibility, but iOS 8 already had some Continuity features. iOS 8.1 will add SMS and Instant Hotspot features specifically.

Apple's got a new iPad, and it's a sequel to last year's ultra-svelte iPad Air: It's called the Apple iPad Air 2. CEO Tim Cook announced as much this morning from Apple's Cupertino, California, headquarters with a video of a pencil being shaved down, a nod to last year's unveiling of the first iPad Air. The iPad Air 2 is 6.1mm, "18 percent thinner than the first iPad Air," Apple's Phil Schiller told attendees. "It's the world's thinnest tablet."
Beyond thinning it down even further, Apple's usual suspects of upgrades are on board: The iPad Air 2 has the newest A8 processor and M8 coprocessor, which Schiller said is 12 times more powerful than the original iPad. It's also got a brand-new camera out back: an 8MP iSight camera (f/2.4 aperture) that does 1080p video, burst mode, panorama shots and auto HDR (that takes up a bit less space). The display remains 9.7 inches, which Schiller called "a new Retina display." He also said the new iPad Air 2 has Touch ID, the Home button-based security system that enables logging in via fingerprint. With Touch ID, iPad Air 2 also has Apple Pay, albeit enabled for online purchases only.

You knew it was coming; now it's here. Apple just pulled back the curtain on the iPad mini 3 at its live media event in Cupertino, and so far it's pretty much what we expected -- a modestly updated tablet with some more familiar looks. The saga of the iPad mini 3 hasn't been too spoilerific, but Apple's "accidental" leak from the other day painted the thing with some vague strokes: We figured out what it'd be called and knew it would have a Touch ID sensor (turns out that latter bit is the most notable addition to the mix). Phil Schiller didn't spend too much time on them -- by which we mean he hardly said anything about them -- mostly likely because there's really nothing else new here.

A stable of new iPads wasn't all Apple had up its sleeve today. The folks in Cupertino have also been hard at work on a desktop update, and the iMac is the beneficiary. If you'll recall, Apple quietly trotted out a more affordable version of the machine back in June, but this fall's release packs a much bigger punch. With the latest model, the company's all-in-one option gets a boost in the screen department with the addition of a Retina panel. That 27-inch oxide TFT display is what Apple's calling "Retina 5K," touting a 5,120 x 2,880 resolution with 67 percent more pixels than 4K. The added real estate means that you'll be able to do things like edit 4K video in Final Cut Pro X while still having plenty of room for all the tools you'll need. Even with all of that new screen power, the new iMac is said to be 30 percent more energy efficient. The outer edge is also 5mm thick, keeping the trim frame all the way around.
