The federal antitrust case Apple's fighting isn't looking any more favorable for the hardware giant since we last reported on it. Former iTunes engineer Rod Schultz testified on Friday that he'd worked on a project to block "100 percent of non-iTunes clients" in addition to keeping any third-party software from interfering with iTunes, according to The Wall Street Journal. This, the plaintiffs claim, was part of an anti-competitive way to boost the prices of iPods from 2006 to 2009. Despite the plaintiff's best efforts, however, they weren't able to submit a 2012 academic paper (PDF) Schultz had written detailing Apple's blocking operating systems that didn't support iTunes (namely Linux) as evidence.

Need a way to drown out your extended family while they're visiting for the holidays? So long as you own an Android device and are in the United States, Hulu's got you covered. See, the TV-streaming outfit is offering "many popular" shows as part of its free Share the Joy of the Seasons promo on Google's mobile OS. As the app's Google Play listing tells it, episodes from the current seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Sleepy Hollow and South Park are on tap, amongst others. More episodes and content -- likeParty Down -- naturally are locked behind the Hulu Plus paywall. And for iOS users, well, we suppose they'll have to settle for that recently redesigned app.

It's been three months since Google ended its row with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over its in-app purchasing policies. The commission took issue with children racking up large bills on their parents' credit cards, resulting in Mountain View settling to the tune of $19 million. Now, Google is reportedly starting the laborious process of paying back those hit the hardest by purchases. According to Phandroid, Google is sending customers an email that underlines the new Play Store features aimed at preventing unauthorized purchasing and states that it's "offering refunds in certain cases in line with [its] agreement with the FTC." Those that think they're due compensation will have until December 2nd 2015 to apply for a refund.

Given that Microsoft owns Minecraft developer Mojang now, it was only a matter of time before we saw the pixely game make its way to one of the few platforms where it wasn't already available. That time is now, as Minecraft: Pocket Edition hits Windows Phone 8.1. For $6.99 you get access to Survival mode -- gather resources and build shelter during the day, hide from monsters at night -- and Creative mode. The latter of which lets your imagination go wild with unlimited resources and the ability to fly. And, so long as there are pals on a local WiFi network, it won't be a lonely affair as you can team up with them for some fort-building shenanigans. How many of them will be on Windows Phone, however, is another matter entirely.

If you've been looking for a big-name alternative to Google Maps on your Android phone, your moment has come. After weeks of testing, Nokia has officially releasedHere Maps on Google Play. The experience will be familiar if you sideloaded earlier versions. While it's not as multi-talented as Google Maps, its simple interface specializes in navigation (especially driving) and offline mapping -- this may be ideal for trips abroad where cellular data isn't guaranteed. The biggest additions with the Google Play edition are support for 18 new countries and some bug fixes.

Microsoft's Torque is handy if you want to search the web through a quick shake of the wrist and a voice command, but you've had to use an Android Wear smartwatch to try the Bing-powered app. That's not much help if your wrist is bare, is it? You won't have sit on the sidelines any longer, though. A revamped version of Torque now runs on any reasonably modern Android phone (4.3 or later), no wearable required; you only have to shake your phone to bring up a mini window and start speaking. The app also provides streamlined answers for more of your questions, including flight statuses and events. Torque is still a bit superfluous when Android is virtually built around Google search, but it's worth a look if you can't (or just don't want to) use "OK Google" to get a quick answer.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has never been shy to talk about the company he helped create, regardless of whatever the topic may be. Most recently, in an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek, Wozniak touched briefly on a few topics from the early days of Apple, ranging from the vision of his long-time partner and friend, Steve Jobs, to how many Apple I and Apple II units were sold in the beginning. Wozniak was also asked a question regarding the legendary Apple garage, which has become known as the Cupertino firm's birthplace -- it's an iconic place, to say the least. To this, he said, "The garage is a bit of a myth."

Apple has filed a patent that can protect an iPhone’s screen from smashing when dropped.
The tech can estimate where a device will drop, as well as actively shift the unit’s center of gravity so that parts such as the screen and camera are not damaged.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office officially awarded Apple with the new patent, which relies on sensors to monitor physical device activity and positioning.
Sensors and processors also work together to measure speed of descent, time to impact and orientation.
In other news, Apple allegedly deleted competitors’ songs from its customers’ iPods between 2007 and 2009, reports the Wall Street Journal.
According to a court hearing in Oakland, California, users who downloaded tracks from other services and tried to sync them to their iPod using iTunes would receive an error message.
However, Augustin Farrugia, security director at Apple, said in the firm’s defence: "We don't need to give users too much information, we don't want to confuse users."

Mozilla has been staunchly opposed to an iOS version of its Firefox browser for a while. It wants to use its own web engine, but Apple will only let companies use its in-house code in the name of security. However, the organization is clearly having a change of heart -- VP Jonathan Nightingale has revealed that Mozilla wants to bring Firefox to iOS. He didn't say how it would happen, but it's most likely that the company will use Apple's engine and layer a custom interface on top, like Google does with Chrome. We've reached out to Mozilla and will let you know if it can say more.

Long before Apple was shoehorning the latest from U2 into your iTunes account, it was deleting songs originating from rival services. Tell us if this sounds familiar: You grabbed Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster from Amazon MP3 in 2009, threw it in your iTunes library, went to sync your 160GB iPod classic and got an error message saying you needed to restore the device's factory settings. According to The Wall Street Journal, upon restoring, non-iTunes music would disappear. In the courtroom for theanti-trust case, prosecuting attorney Patrick Coughlin said that Apple directed the software to not tell users about their now-missing songs, too. Cupertino countered by saying that its actions were to thwart any attempts at hacking into iTunes and that users were kept in the dark for a reason. As security director Augustin Farrugia testified:

For a while, rumors were circulating that Microsoft was working on McLaren -- a successor to the Lumia 1020 with a giant camera and "3D touch" gestures. It was supposedly cancelled, but a listing for a prototype on Chinese auction site Taobao suggests that the device (or something like it) was close to completion. Known only by its internal RM-1052 name, the Windows Phone has a 1020-like camera hump and similar styling cues, but it's made mostly of aluminum. There's only a hint of plastic at the bottom that's presumably meant to improve wireless reception. The mystery phone appears to have superior performance, too, since a software shot points to a 1080p screen instead of the older phone's 720p panel.

It looks like Google's modular Project Ara smartphone has some fresh competition. Circular Devices has been working on the Puzzlephone, a simpler take on Android phones that you can upgrade yourself. Instead of letting you replace things piece-by-piece, it divides parts into "the Brain" (core electronics and camera), "the Heart" (battery and secondary tech) and "the Spine" (LCD, speakers and basic shape). It's not as flexible as Ara, but it promises a sleeker design that still includes real futureproofing; you can swap in a new module when you want a faster processor, a fresh battery or new features. The goal is to have a base phone that can last for 10 years, rather than two or three..

2014 will represent the first full year of decline for Apple iPad shipments, predicts IDC.
The firm expects the worldwide tablet market to see a massive deceleration in 2014, with year-over-year growth slowing to 7.2 per cent, down from 52.5 per cent in 2013.
IDC reports that both the iPad and the overall market slowdown do not come as a surprise as device lifecycles for tablets have continued to lengthen, increasingly resembling those of PCs more than smartphones.
"The tablet market continues to be impacted by a few major trends happening in relevant markets," said Ryan Reith, program director with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Device Trackers.
"In the early stages of the tablet market, device lifecycles were expected to resemble those of smartphones, with replacement occurring every 2-3 years. What has played out instead is that many tablet owners are holding onto their devices for more than three years and in some instances more than four years. We believe the two major drivers for longer than expected tablet lifecycles are legacy software support for older products, especially within iOS, and the increased use of smartphones for a variety of computing tasks."
PCR recently reported that Apple iPad trade-ins have risen by 190.06 per cent since the announcement of the new iPad Air.

On Friday a U.S. federal judge approved a settlement in the Apple ebook price-fixing case that could see the technology giant paying $450 million. $400 million of that would go to the roughly 23 million consumers thought to be affected by the price fixing, and the rest would go to lawyers. Though the case is now settled, the dollar amount is not necessarily final — an appeals court still has to rule on a previous verdict. If the appeals court finds in Apple's favor, then the total settlement drops to only $70 million. If they find against Apple, then it's the full amount. "The settlement appeared to reflect fatigue by Apple, the Justice Department, state attorneys

November 24th, 2014, 21:53 Posted By: wraggster
The launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus at the end of September pushed App Store downloads to record levels in October, says new research from mobile marketing analysts Fiksu.
Fiksu's methodology is to measure the download numbers of the top 200 iOS apps and extrapolate from there. Non-gaming apps are included in the figures.
During October, those methods calculated an all-time high of 7.8 million downloads of the top 200 apps per day on average, a jump of 42 per cent from the 5.5 million in September. However, that volume also drives competition. Cost per install for iOS went up to $1.46 - jumping 21 per cent month by month and 59 per cent year on year. For Android, the CPI sits at $1.01, up just 1 per cent from September and 2 per cent since 2013.
"An important lesson this month for marketers is the value of nurturing user loyalty prior to device launches and gift-giving seasons," reads the report. "Despite the marked rise in advertising costs particularly on iOS, the Cost Per Loyal User Index (CPLU) indicated a slight decline in October to $2.16 from September's $2.25. This decrease is a result of the tendency of app users to quickly re-download their most-used 'vital' apps during upgrades. The first set of apps users download on their new iPhone 6s are likely to be those they can't live without, which makes them much more likely to become loyal users of those apps.
"In the coming months, marketers should also look to capitalize on untapped Android opportunities. While the Cost per Launch (CPL) Index, which tracks the costs of driving engagement from mobile users, showed increases across the board on iOS, October saw a 26 percent year-over-year drop in Android CPL. Combined with the slighter increases on Android's October CPI numbers, this may be a good place for marketers to spend advertising dollars as iOS costs only continue to rise."

There have been a few signs that not all is well in Samsung's mobile division, with the company pledging to make fewer new devices, as well as its chief taking a pay cut. If the Wall Street Journal is to be believed, the cause of this unrest is all down to faltering sales of the Galaxy S5, which has apparently sold 4 million fewer phones than its predecessor. According to the report, the company is still riding high in the US, but saw sales in China drop by 50 percent compared to the Galaxy S4. Considering that Samsung was so confident that the device would be a blockbuster that it increased production by 20 percent, it could now have as many a 4 million unsold devices sitting in warehouses. The paper's sources believe that the drops will trigger a leadership re-shuffle, with mobile chief JK Shin getting pushed, with his duties handed over to TV & home appliance chief BK Yoon.

Apple follows Google's lead, now uses "Get" for download button on freemium titles
Apple has changed the way freemium games are labelled on its mobile and desktop App Store.
Until now, when a user was faced with a freemium title like, say, Candy Crush Saga, the button to download it was marked with "Free." Now, that label has changed to "Get." The App Store's front page has also dispensed with any category or collection of games based on the Freemium model. Apple has offered no official explanation for the move.
The context for the decision is clear, however. The way freemium games are presented and sold to the public, particularly on mobile devices, has been under scrutiny for much of this year, with the EU Commission leading the charge andseveral court cases highlighting the key issues.
However, in July this year the EU Commission reserved its praise only for Android, which removed the use of the word "Free" to describe freemium games on the Google Play store. Apple, on the other hand, offered, "no concrete or immediate solutions," a situation the Commission described as, "regrettable."

Calling people outside the US isn't as expensive as it used to be, but the charges can still add up; even the better deals at big American wireless carriers have you paying both a monthly rate and by the minute. T-Mobile thinks it can shake things up a bit. It just revamped its Stateside International Talk plan to offer unlimited international calling to as many as 70 countries at flat rates. You'll pay a relatively modest $5 extra per month if you only need to reach landlines, and $10 per month if your foreign friends use cellphones. And importantly, this covers every line on your account -- your kids can speak to family overseas without racking up huge bills. There are some catches (only "30+" countries qualify for unlimited mobile-to-mobile), but this could still be a solid deal if you frequently chat with people around the globe.
