There's no shortage of 8-inch Windows tablets on the market right now, but Microsoft and its partners are pushing ahead with plans to shrink the OS even further. A Redmond executive at Computex has just shown off the Toshiba Encore 7: a 7-inch tablet running full Windows 8.1. If you're thinking that the Windows desktop will be mighty fiddly at this screen-size, then you're right -- it's only going to be useful as a Plan B when there's no other way to get into a legacy application, or when you're hooked up to a keyboard, mouse and bigger display. For regular use, you'd be reliant on the more thumb-friendly Metro UI and apps.

Right now, Apple's AirPlay media streaming requires an established WiFi network to fly. That's fine when you're at home, but do you really want to ask for a friend's hotspot password just to show vacation photos on their Apple TV? Mercifully, iOS 8 will let you skip that hassle. One of the many under the radar upgrades to the software is peer-to-peer AirPlay support -- you can now share content to an AirPlay-capable device as long as you can make a direct connection.

Apple CEO Tim Cook during his keynote said that around 130 million customers have purchased their first Apple device in the last twelve months. He states, 'Many of these customers were switchers from Android,' he said. 'They had bought an Android phone by mistake, and then had sought a better experience and a better life.' He added that almost half of those who have purchased an iPhone in China since December have switched from Android. However, it is worth noting that iPhones were not actually available in China until December, when pre-orders began, so it is unclear how much of the device's popularity there is simply down to the novelty factor, rather than a burning desire to flee from Android."

Marat Fayzullin has released another version of its GameBoy Advance emulator VGBA-Android.
Quote:
I have released the VGBA-Android 4.4, a new version of my GameBoy Advance emulator:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...d=com.fms.vgba

You can either enable it permanently via the File Selector menu, or search for an individual game cover by selecting "Download Box Art" from the context menu. Keep in mind that not every cover can be found and sometimes the search may return a wrong image. To save network bandwidth, the Box Art Downloader only works over WiFi.
I have also been trying to make DropBox users´ life easier. With the new VGBA, you no longer need to enter the password every time you use DropBox. Also, as you finish playing a DropBox game, your gameplay state will be automatically uploaded back into the DropBox.
There were other changes as well. See below for details.

- Added box art downloader that searches and downloads game box images.
- DropBox no longer requires login every time you open it.
- Gameplay saved back to DropBox after you are done playing.
- Added "Download Box Art" option to the File Selector menus.
- Added Gallery support for SD card folders on Android Kitkat.
- Added DropBox upload from SD card folders on Android Kitkat.

The UK is the biggest market for digital games in Europe.
The latest figures from IHS Screen Digest reveal that the digital and online spend on games grew 16 per cent in the UK to £819m last year.
“This is driven by increased spending on freemium PC game experiences, PC game downloads and digital spend on games console content,” said IHS’s head of games Piers Harding-Rolls. “This growth allowed it to remain the biggest market for digital and online games across Europe.
“We expect digital games spend to increase strongly during the next few years as the UK’s traditionally strong console market makes the shift to digital consumption.”
Not all digital markets are in growth, however. In fact MMO games and portal-based PC casual games have declined, as they too are disrupted by new digital and mobile competitors.
Speaking of mobile, this sector reached a massive £430m during 2013, again driven by the freemium model.
“The UK is by some distance the leading mobile games market in Europe,” said Jack Kent, IHS’ Senior Principal Analyst, for Mobile. “Freemium games are driving UK mobile games market success, which is becoming increasingly concentrated at the top of the charts where titles such as King’s Candy
Crush Saga and Supercell’s Clash of Clans dominated the top chart positions throughout 2013.
“2013 also saw leading games publishers launch TV advertising campaigns, something that had been rare outside of Asia until then, underscoring the maturity of the mobile games market and cementing its place as a mass market activity.”

Windows Phone users worried that Whatsapp's devs might be enjoying theirFacebook money too much to fix the app can now rest easy. Whatsapp is now back on the Windows Phone Store after a couple of weeks' absence, and it even comes with new features, including chat backgrounds, better privacy settings and the ability to customize notification tones. Its devs pulled the app from the store after a lot of users reported having serious issues with update 3 for Windows Phone 8 that permanently disabled notifications or caused persistent errors. Just as Microsoft's Windows Phone guy Joe Belfiore promised on Twitter, though, Whatsapp's back and ready for more cross-platform messaging.

Samsung has been teasing a Tizen-based prototype phones for quite awhile now, but it has finally launched an honest-to-God Tizen smartphone: the Samsung Z. It's Samsung's attempt at a homegrown non-Android OS (first featured on itsGalaxy Gear smartwatch), though it developed the software jointly with Intel. The Samsung Z will feature a 720p HD, AMOLED display with a quad-core, 2.3GHz CPU (from Intel we presume, and possibly based on the new "Moorefield" architecture) with 2GB RAM, 16GB memory, LTE, an 8-megapixel camera, a heartrate sensor and fingerprint scanner. Expect to see the same design language featured in its Android-based Galaxy S devices, especially in the app drawer, notification tray and homescreen widgets. Samsung has also promised a "slim, angular design," and will launch it in black and gold on June 3rd at its Tizen developer conference in San Francisco. It'll be available in Russia and other markets shortly thereafter -- expect more details (like the price) soon.

Charts, graphs and stats: These are the things Apple keynotes are made of, and today's WWDC 2014 kickoff was no different. CEO Tim Cook took to the stage this morning at the Moscone Center in San Francisco armed with enough numerical ammunition to put your best boardroom PowerPoint Keynote to shame. Cook kicked things off boasting that over 40 million copies of OS X Mavericks have been installed and more than 50 percent of the install base is working on its latest OS. He went on to point out that while PC sales continued to slip (down 5 percent, according to Cook), Apple's computer sales are growing.

We all knew it was coming, and now it's here. Apple CEO Tim Cook just put months of breathless speculation to rest by pulling back the curtain on iOS 8 during the company's WWDC 2014 keynote address in San Francisco. It doesn'tlook like the sort of quantum leap that iOS 7 was, but Apple's head honcho assures us that it interacts in some fantastic ways with the new version of OS X andthat it pairs great end user features with great developer features. Well, we'll be the judges of that. The big keynote just wrapped up -- here's what we know and what it means for you.
First things first. There's a lot to dig into, but you'll get iOS 8 as a free update sometime this fall for the iPhone 4s and newer, the 5th gen iPod touch, and the iPad 2 and newer. If you're a developer though, you'll be able to access the iOS 8 beta and SDK today.

Apple's iPhone is going from part-time health stat monitor to full-time mobile monitoring unit. HealthKit is a new service coming to the iPhone that tracks, records and analyzes your fitness level across a variety of metrics (sleep, movement, etc.). The way you use it on iOS 8 is through a new app called, simply, "Health." The initiative works with companies like Nike to bring all your health information into one place, under the Health app in the next update to iOS. It looks a lot like Passbook, using cards to identify various stats. Thusly, it enables customization of the stats you want tracked and how you want it presented.

With the arrival of iOS 8, sharing amongst the family is about to get a lot easier. Once you set up all the members of your household (up to six total), you can automatically share photos, calendars, reminders, location and more. But that's not all. You know that catchy tune your son bought last week? Well, you'll be able spin it on your iPhone too. Sharing books, movies, apps and songs is also thrown in, and it can all be tied to a single credit card. Don't worry parents: you'll get a notification when your kids want to make a purchase.

It's been a long time coming, but Apple is finally adding support for widgets to iOS. On stage at its Worldwide Developers Conference, the company's senior VP of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, revealed that devs can now start building widgets within the Notification Center on iOS 8. Unlike Google's take on widgets with Android, Apple's equivalent won't have them living on the home screen of your smartphone or tablet. Instead, iOS widgets will share the drop-down hub with app notifications. Still, there's a lot of potential here, as it's going to let those of you with an iOS device have more interactivity and quick access to your favorite applications. iOS 8 will be available this fall.

After years of waiting, Apple has finally brought support for third-party keyboards to iOS. Inside iOS 8, keyboards like Swiftkey and Swype, which have enjoyed huge usage on Android, will have system-wide access to all apps and services on your iPhone and iPad. Swiftkey has confirmed it's on board, but if you don't fancy that, you'll still able to enjoy Apple's new QuickType keyboard. The company says the improved keyboard learns from the way you type and text, offering a pick of suggestions for your next word based on the content of your message or the person you're conversing with. Planning a meal with your friend or loved one? The keyboard will auto-populate words like "dinner" or "eat" as you type. At launch, QuickType will support 14 regions including the US, UK, Canada and Australian English, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese (that includes Hong Kong and Taiwan), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Thai.
