Bloomberg reports that after Apple's patent victory in court last week over smart-phone rival Samsung, Apple is seeking a sales ban on several specific phones from Samsung; none of them are currently flagship devices. "The nine devices targeted by Cupertino, California-based Apple for a U.S. sales ban include the Admire, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Touch, Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, Galaxy S3 and Stratosphere."Getting the competition blocked from the marketplace over patent claims is something that Apple's tried before in connection with its beef with Samsung, and the company has had mixedresults, depending on jurisdiction. Last week's decision in favor of Apple hints that the jury didn't think the company deserved the entire $2.2 billion it was seeking, awarding (a mere) $120 million, instead.

Apple says it's fixed a server bug that was affecting "some" former iMessage users who had tried to switch to Android or another OS. However, it admits there's another problem with its messaging platform that it still hasn't managed to address. According to Re/code, the first bug was making it difficult for Apple staff to keep track of which phone numbers are currently associated with an iPhone -- information that is essential for the proper running of the iMessage. Without an accurate database, ex-iPhone users could find that some of their SMS messages are mistakenly treated as iMessages and sucked into the bowels of an Apple's datacenter, from whence they may never return. As for the remaining flaws, and iMessage's broader dependence on up-to-the-minute record-keeping, Apple says it's working on a fuller solution that will come in a "future software update." In the meantime, the best advice for any iPhone leaver is still to manually disable iMessage and return to regular SMS before they power down for the final time.

It’s worse than PC in some ways,' claims Testronic's Chris Rowley
The continued fragmentation of the Android market is an absolute nightmare for game developers and testing firms, QA experts have told Develop.
Speaking as part of a roundtable looking at the state of QA and localisation in games, Testronic operations director Chris Rowley said the issue of differing mobile devices was accelerating, and believes the problem won’t be fixed anytime soon.
“The fragmentation around Android is an absolute nightmare, and it’s actually accelerating,” he said.
“We’ve always tried to focus on the top 20 or so of the most popular platforms, but that isn’t consistent across different territories. It’s worse than PC in some ways. And there’s no interest from manufacturers to standardise across devices.”
Stuart Pratt, delivery manager at online poker firm PKR, also spoke out against the increasing fragmentation of the market, and claimed 139 new Android devices had been released this year alone.
He stated there was “no way” companies like his could buy every single device and test against them.
“And we can’t just concentrate on the big companies like Samsung – now there are tablets from supermarkets, too," said Pratt.
"The Hudl from Tesco sold out over Christmas, so we couldn’t get one and didn’t know if our game worked or not until later. But what are we meant to do?”
You can read our full QA and localisation roundtable in which experts discuss the biggest issues currently facing the sector here.
Are you experiencing issues with Android fragmentation?

Seven months after it began letting customers trade in their iPhones at its retail stores, Apple's expanded its Reuse and Recycle programme to include iPads. From today, anyone with an iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4 and iPad mini can walk into an Apple Store, hand over their tablet and receive credit towards a new iOS device. However, the company will not accept current-generation devices like the iPad Air or iPad mini with Retina display. As with its iPhone programme, Apple will assess the condition of devices before providing a trade-in value, so don't expect a huge return if your iPad has seen better days.

Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatches now make up 70 percent of the market, outperforming rival models from Pebble and Motorola.
A report on wearable technology published by analyst Strategy Analytics also revealed that global smartwatch shipments grew by 250 per cent in Q1 2014.
Over half a million Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatches have been sold into the channel, making one in seven smartwatches sold a Samsung device.
Strategy Analytics’ research observed products available during the first three months of 2014, meaning that Samsung’s newer Gear 2, Gear Neo and Gear Fit – which were announced at CES in January – didn’t count towards the numbers.
The rest of the smartwatch market is split between firms such as Intel, Motorola, Sony and smaller independent vendors such as Kickstarter success Pebble.
Samsung rival Apple has long been rumoured to be developing a smartwatch of its own, but how such a device could impact sales of Samsung’s multi-generation wearable technology offering remains to be seen.

Smartphones with screens over 5-inches are on the rise, according to the latest research from Canalys.
A third of the 279.4 million smartphones shipped in the first quarter of 2014 were ‘phablets’.
In Europe alone, 27 per cent of all shipments were phablet-sized.
Jessica Kwee, an analyst at Canalys, said: "The trend is unmistakably towards larger-screen handsets at the high end of the market. Consumers now expect high-end devices to have large displays, and Apple's absence in this market will clearly not last long."
Apple is expected to launch a 5.5-inch smartphone this year, along with a 4.7-inch iPhone 6.
Phablets are not the only products on the rise. Curry’s/PC World have revealed that a wide range of electrical goods have seen a sales increase in the lead up to summer.
Fans are up 59 per cent week-on-week, ice cream makers have seen a 25 per cent increase and air-conditioning products are up 175 per cent.

When a $600 smartphone isn't considered "premium," then we're all in deep, deep trouble. That's the problem facing Samsung's Galaxy S5, however, with scores of people hoping that an even more expensive version of the flagship is lurking just around the corner. The folks over at PhoneArena are showing off an image of what purports to be the "Galaxy S5 Prime," apparently packing a QHD display and some spec bumps to ensure it remains a few Snapdragon model numbers ahead of itsimmediate rivals. The other big alleged difference is that the handset will come with an aluminum body, in the hope of luring back any customers who are drawn towards the HTC One's shinier chassis. Naturally, there's no proof that such a device actually exists, but the images do show some subtle differences compared to the regular GS5 we know today: The optical blood pressure monitor appears to sit behind the same glass panel as the camera sensor, and there's no speaker grille on the lower-left quarter of the rear case. All in all, we're going to file this in the "we'll believe it when we see it" box, since even Samsung wouldn't be crazy enough to replace its flagship just months after launch, would it?

The Galaxy S5 was widely tipped to launch with iris-scanning capabilities. When the crunch time came, Samsung played safe with only fingerprint sensor support.According to the Wall Street Journal, the eye-centric tech is still on the company's radar and could soon debut in new high- and low-end phones alike. "We're looking at various types of biometric [mechanisms] and one of things that everybody is looking at is iris detection," Samsung executive Rhee In-jong admitted today, adding that it would likely be included in flagship smartphones first. Like fingerprint recognition, iris scanning would likely form another link inSamsung's Knox platform, putting it in good stead with big organizations like the US government. Samsung's desire to "follow the market trend" often causes it to beat rivals to market with features that customers rarely use. Iris scanning could well be the next example.

Marat Fayzullin has updated his (commercial) GameBoy emulator VGB-Android.
Quote:
I have just pushed VGB-Android 4.2.3 (update to 4.2.4), a new version of my GameBoy emulator, to the Google Play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...id=com.fms.vgb
In this release, I have introduced the Palette Editor that makes it easier to modify game colors. Select "Edit Palette" from the menu to see how it works and send me your suggestions on how to improve it. I also made several rather important fixes, including NetPlay connection fix and the virtual directional pad fix. Finally, I rectified the situation where restoring the gameplay state reset the GameBoy model: some users complained about VGB forcing them into Super GameBoy mode every time they returned to the game.
- Added Palette Editor, letting you adjust colors at runtime.
- Fixed GameBoy model reset when restoring state.
- Fixed network play, previously broken for some users.
- Fixed directional pad activated by touching outside.
- Added more Pokemon Crystal and Pokemon Yellow cheats.
- Added "Edit Palette" option to emulator and File Selector menus.
- Added .PAL file display to File Selector and Gallery.
- Added tilt joystick sensitivity setting.
- Improved melodic audio quality.

- Switched to table-based PSG envelopes.
- Switched to logarithmic PSG volumes.
- Fixed white noise frequency computation.
- Adjusted noise to be 50% of the melodic volume.
- Adjusted envelopes length.
- Improved overall melodic audio quality.
