Siri is going to learn a few new tricks in iOS 8. As rumored, the voice assistant will now identify songs using Shazam; if you want to find out the name of a catchy track, you don't have to fire up a separate app. You'll also have the option of buying iTunes content. The speech recognition system is smarter, to boot -- it now shows what you're saying in real time, and you can start commands by speaking "hey, Siri" (much like Android KitKat's "OK Google") instead of holding down the home button. There's no mention of integration with third-party apps so far, but this is still a big step forward for iOS users who prefer voice dictation for all their tasks.

Guess what folks! With iOS 8 Touch ID will finally be useful for something besides unlocking your phone and buying apps. During the big keynote at WWDC 2014Apple announced the debut of an API for TouchID. That means other apps will be able to use the fingerprint scanner on your iPhone for authentication. Your actual fingerprint data is still stored securely on the hardware, and is never actually exposed to developers. That means you could quickly and easily order a bombproof case for your precious phone just by holding your thumb across the home button and never worry that a bug in the Amazon app could expose your fingerprint to nefarious actors. That should relive some of the pain associated with keeping all your various accounts secure -- which, as you've been told countless times, should all have unique passwords with a mixture of letters, numbers and special characters. Android users may have in-app access to LastPass, but simply scanning your thumbprint seems that much easier.

Apple's annual developer conference is well underway, and it just revealed what could be a seismic shift in the iOS world: third party apps will soon be able talk to each other. Historically, applications on iOS have lived in their own silos, without being able to share data and features, but that's set to change in iOS 8. Apple has given developers "Extensibility" tools -- a suite of APIs, if you want to get technical -- that they can wield to let their apps share everything from documents to translation services. A demo onstage showed a Bing extension for Safari doing inline translation of a Japanese website, and using Pinterest to share a photo from a website in just a few taps.

You no longer have to go searching app-by-app to find a buried file on your Windows Phone. Right on schedule, Microsoft has released its Files app; if you're running Windows Phone 8.1, you can now dig through folders to open and manipulate documents stored anywhere on your device. The interface won't compare to what you get on your PC, but it should be useful for offloading photos to an SD card or deleteing videos that are chewing up space. If you're already running Microsoft's latest and greatest mobile OS, you only have to swing by the Windows Phone Store to give the file browser a spin.

While many have been expecting Samsung to launch a mini version of the Galaxy S5 given the company's past habits, there have been questions about just what the smartphone would include. Would it be as hobbled as last year's S4 Mini? Maybe not. SamMobile has received photos of a purported Galaxy S5 Mini which hint that this smaller device could include the fingerprint and heart rate sensors of its full-size sibling, as well as the water-resistant shell. Not surprisingly, it would also share the Ultra Power Saving mode and other software tricks.

PC Mag reports that an upcoming laptop from HP (one that was prematurely announced in April, and now official) has decent-to-good specs â under 4 pounds, battery life more than 8 hours, Tegra processor, and a 1928x1080 touch screen â but an unusual operating system, at least for a laptop. The SlateBook 14 will run Android, rather than Windows (or ChromeOS, for that matter), which helps keep it relatively cheap, at $400. According to the article, Android is "a lot cheaper for HP to implement in a laptop; ChromeOS, in contrast, comes with more stringent system requirements that would cost HP a bit more." Ars Technica's mention in Aprilincludes a screenshot taken from a video (note: video itself appears to be disabled) which shows the keyboard layout and which reveals some Android-specific changes. Microsoft is planning to launch a smartwatch with cross-platform support for Apple and Android devices, reports have claimed.
Citing âmultiple sources with knowledge of the companyâs plansâ, Forbes reported that the upcoming wearable device will be developed in collaboration with Microsoftâs Xbox Kinect division.
Technology derived from the Kinectâs optical tracking abilities will be integrated into the smartwatch in order to continually measure heart rate, the sources stated.
A variety of other health-tracking sensors would also be built into the wrist-mounted tech.
Similar optical-based technology was recently showcased by Samsung during the announcement of its next-gen Simband health tracker concept.
The Microsoft sources added that the deviceâs battery will last for two days, and will work with iOS and Android devices, in addition to Microsoftâs own Windows platform.
The smartwatch could be announced as soon as this summer, it was suggested.
âWe have nothing to share,â a Microsoft representative responded, when asked about the rumoured smartwatch device.

With Eddy Cue claiming this week that the firm has âthe best product pipeline Iâve seen in my 25 years at Appleâ, many industry watchers, journalists and tech fans are pondering just what these new products might be.
The Apple rumour mill pumps out product suggestions all year round, but since CEO Tim Cook confirmed the company will release ânew categories this yearâ back in February, the mill has been working overtime.
To be fair, most of them spawn from the firmâs numerous patents, implying that thereâs a chance they will actually see the light of day.
There have been rumours about an iPen Stylus, wireless projector PC and â the most talked about one â a smartwatch called the âiWatchâ.
With this yearâs WWDC just around the corner, will we finally get a glimpse of Appleâs first wearable tech product? Probably not, seeing as itâs unlikely that any hardware will actually launch, but there may be some hints in its other announcements as to what we can expect later in the year.
Personally, Iâd be surprised if the iWatch makes it to market. And if it does, Iâd be even more surprised if it is actually just a smartwatch.
Why? Itâs safe to say that Samsung has already stolen the smartwatch crown this year. A recent report on wearable technology, published by analyst Strategy Analytics, revealed that Samsungâs Gear devices now make up 70 per cent of the market.
Globally, Samsung has a bigger chunk out of smartphones than Apple, and although the rivals do love to try and outdo each other, it seems like Apple has already missed the boat on smartwatches, especially considering market tracker The NPD Group forecasts the wearable technology market will contract in 2016 as âhype for wearables wears offâ.
With the recent acquisition of Beats, perhaps Apple is looking towards the audio market. Fingers crossed it will finally dump the iPhoneâs tinny, white headphones when the new smartphone launches. Iâm much more excited to hear about a speaker or home entertainment range rather than an official iOS smartwatch anyway.
Apple has always brought exciting products to market. Yes, there were internet connected mobile phones before the iPhone, but itâs impossible to deny âsmartphonesâ are defined by their iPhone-esque design.
Itâs the same with the iPod and the iPad. Apple didnât invent the MP3 player or the tablet, but it took these two things and transformed them into new products. New products that everyone wanted.
If Apple does release its own wearable tech this year, I can almost guarantee that it won't just be a âsmartwatchâ that tells the time and lets you read your text messages.

We knew it existed but now it's finally crawled out of some jungle (or beach vacation) to go official. Samsung's Galaxy S5 Active is available today on AT&T and while ruggedized phones typically lack.. something compared to flagship devices, this time it looks like no notable corners were cut. The Galaxy S5 Active has the same full-HD AMOLED 5.1-inch screen, while the 16-megapixel camera and fingerprint sensor are also lodged into the rugged smartphone. That said, water-resistance is now part of the original GS5's bag of tricks, which makes it less of selling point here. Regardless, there's the shock-resistant dust-proof shell and a burlier look: even if it's dreamy rendered view we're seeing here, the metallic details and finish could well win over Galaxy fans that aren't pro-plastic -- we're a little intrigued to see it IRL.

When Samsung debuted its new line of Tizen-powered wearables, it looked like the original Galaxy Gear had been put on notice. Instead of leaving early adopters in the cold, the Korean smartphone maker has decided to make good on its promise to bring the wearable up to date -- by switching it from Android over to its own OS. The update includes improvements to performance and battery life, a new standalone music player, customizable shortcuts, and voice-controlled camera commands. By installing the update, which at the moment is available as amanual download or via Samsung's Kies software, you will lose any third-party tweaks or unsupported Android features that you've previously installed. However, you will gain many of the features present on the Gear 2 (except those dependent on additional sensors). Samsung hasn't pushed an over-the-air update out yet, but that may not be a bad thing. It means some that may have accepted the update out of hand are less likely to make a decision they might regret later.

Your Dragon Quest 8 has begun on iOS and Android, marking the first of the RPG series' mobile ports to reach the West. You can take the PS2 adventure on the go for $20 stateside, or ÂŁ14/18 Euros across the ocean.
The port promises "streamlined" touchscreen controls with freely positional d-pads and reworked combat that allows for both one-tap standoffs and more strategic approaches. Going by footage published by it doesn't seem to feature the voice acting found in the PS2 game. We suspect that means it's based on the Japanese original, since that was a feature added later to Western versions.
Square Enix announced last year it was bringing Dragon Quest 1-8 to smartphones, and it's re-released 1, 4 and 8 so far. The first two of those were limited to Japan, and it's unknown what the publisher's plans are for bringing other entries West.

AT&T promised back in January that it would launch ASUS' PadFone X hybrid, but the device has been stuck in limbo ever since -- the carrier hasn't given out much more than specs for the phone-and-tablet combo. Today, though, there's finally a date to mark on your calendar. The PadFone X should be available on June 6th for $199 on a two-year contract, or $23 per month if you buy it on an 18-month Next payment plan.

Apple is making things official: Dr. Dre's Beats Electronics belongs to Cupertino, and it cost them $3 billion. Rumors had circulated that CEO Tim Cook was interested in nabbing up the audio accessory and music-streaming outfit, corroborated by a beer-drenched video in which Dre himself declared that he had become "the first billionaire in hip-hop." And now, after Financial Times had already let the cat out of the bag, we have Apple's side of the story. As expected, co-founders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre (Andre Young) will join Cook and VP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue, but their exact job titles haven't been revealed just yet.

"Could Eddy's [Cue] team have built a subscription service? Of course." That's what Apple CEO Tim Cook told the New York Times today following the announcement that it had acquired Beats Electronics. But the fact of the matter remains, the company didn't. Instead it went out and purchased a pre-existing service. As the digital music industry shifted away from paying for individual tracks and albums towards an all-you-can-eat model, iTunes stuck to its guns. That's left Cupertino in the slightly odd position of not being at the forefront of innovation in the industry. Observers have been suggesting that Apple would launch it's own Spotify killer any day now, but Tim Cook seems to believe the company's resources would be better used else where. "We could've built those 27 other things ourselves, too," referencing the 27 other companies acquired over the last year, "you don't build everything yourself." That's especially true if you think that you're buying the "first subscription service that really got it right," as he told Re/code.

Ubisoft's mobile companion app for Watch Dogs is now available on Androidand iOS, and gives players the opportunity to interact with others in the game's online sections. Though the word "companion" doesn't have the same ring to it in the "ctOS Mobile" app, as players use it to mess with others' surroundings in an attempt to thwart their attempts to reach the finish line in both race and free ride modes.
For instance, players within the ctOS Mobile app can control a Chicago PD helicopter and go on the hunt for their rivals, controlling ctOS devices within the helicopter's range like road blockers and traffic lights to halt other players. Mobile players will also dispatch Chicago police units like squad cars and SWAT teams and upgrade their effectiveness. As app users complete challenges, they earn experience and skill points, with which they can enhance their police arsenal as well as their own abilities.
The app is free to download and doesn't require that players own the console game. Ubisoft has a list of its compatible devices on its blog. Our review ofWatch Dogs, now available today, notes that the game is "a more fluid and modern power fantasy than we're used to," likening players in the game to being a wizard.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Google may be planning to commoditze 3-D scanning by building the tech of its Project Tango project (essentially, thus far, a phone-sized handheld with 3-D sensing capabilities) into tablets. The Register speculates: "Given that Google has already announced the Project Tango smartphone, it seems likely that it would extend the technology to tablets, and the seven-inch form factor would tie in nicely with the existing Nexus 7 design. ...Google is hoping that developers can build applications to use the scanning capabilities of the Tango hardware. Suggested topics include providing guides for visually impaired people, building gaming maps based on actual rooms, and possibly augmenting Google Maps with interior details â Street View becoming Home View perhaps?" Setting aside what brand it might bear, how would you employ a portable 3-D scanner?
