When it comes to tablets, Google doesn't even follow its own design guidelines." That's the upshot of Ars Technica writer Andew Cunningham's detailed, illustrated look at how Android handles screens much larger than seven inches, going back to the first large Android tablets a few years ago, but including Android 5.0 (Lollipop) on the Nexus 10 and similar sized devices. Cunningham is unimpressed with the use of space for both practical and aesthetic reasons, and says that problems crop up areas that are purely under Google's control, like control panels and default apps, as well as (more understandably) in third party apps.

If you've been wondering just how much a Nexus 6 will set you back if you'd rather not pay Google $649 up front, your wait is over. Following early T-Mobile info, both AT&T andSprint have divulged launch details for Android 5.0 Lollipop's poster child. AT&T's pre-orders start on November 12th, when it will sell the giant smartphone for a hefty $250 on contract, $23 per month over two years or $683 outright. Sprint will have the new Nexus in-store on November 14th, when you can get it for either $29 per month or $696 total. Both carriers are roughly on par with T-Mobile ($27 per month), but it's evident that the carriers aren't giving Google special treatment. This is a flagship device, and the networks are pricing it accordingly. As for Verizon? Big Red tells us that it still isn't ready to reveal its plans -- don't be surprised if its Nexus 6 variant arrives fashionably late.

We were well aware it was coming, but today Microsoft finally says goodbye to Nokia branding for its Windows Phones. The first handset to omit the Nokia name is the new Microsoft Lumia 535, an entry-level device with two standout features: A 5-inch display and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. Microsoft says it's been designed as an alternative to the smaller Lumia 530, and will be targeted primarily at markets like Russia, India, China and other parts of Asia. It will also see a launch in Europe (including the UK) sometime in the future, but currently, we're told there are no plans to release the phone stateside.

Apparently, it's the season for novel iOS security exploits. Researchers at FireEye say they'vediscovered a vulnerability, nicknamed "Masque Attack," that lets malicious websites replace legitimate apps with malware. If ne'er-do-wells have an enterprise developer account or your device's universal device identifier, they can send you a request to install new software outside of the App Store. Since iOS doesn't double-check that the security certificates match when the app bundle IDs are the same, it lets the rogue code overwrite the real deal and swipe data (including from the original app). FireEye says it notified Apple about the exploit in July, but the technique still works the iOS 8.1.1 beta.

If you're still being plagued by missing text messages after leaving iOS for another platform, then the time has come to rejoice. Apple has quietly launched a tool that will let you deregister your phone number from iMessage and solve your texting problem once and for all. The root of this mess comes from Apple routing incoming messages from iPhone users through its iMessage system -- even after you've switched to a different phone. The result has been texts from iPhone users disappearing into the ether. If you forgot to disable iMessage before switching devices, often the only solution was tocompletely disconnect the device from your Apple account. Now all you have to do is plug your phone number into Apple's deregistration site, and punch in the verification code sent to you.
Update: This post has been update to clarify that traditional SMS messages are not routed through the iMessage servers.

Thanks to Chinese regulators, we've already got a pretty good idea of what Microsoft's first Lumia will look like, but now the company is ready to start showing it off. Microsoft says it will reveal the low-budget handset on November 11th, likely confirming the 5-inch qHD display, 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage and 3G-only connectivity we've seen approved in Asia. While the handset retains Nokia's familiar design, it will be the first to sport Microsoft's logo, which'll be located beneath the earpiece on the front and in a vertical stripe running down the back.

What do you want to know about Project Ara? Does a modular smartphone actually work? Yes. Is it very different from Android phones? In a basic how-a-phone-all-works, yes indeed. Paul Eremenko, Technical Project Lead on Google's modular phone project just called in at Expand NY, and he brought along the latest working prototype. Modular phones do indeed work: you can take out a component without bricking the device, it can already run Angry Birds and we just got to play with one.
