It's take two for Apple's first update to iOS 8. After the company released a versionyesterday that cut off cellular connections and TouchID for the iPhone 6 family, there's a new one available now. According to an Apple spokesperson, less than 40,000 device were affected by yesterday's glitch -- a large number, but maybe not that big when sales of the new devices are already at 10 million and climbing. Version 8.0.2 also carries the fixes we were expecting yesterday which should get HealthKit apps going and fix some third-party keyboard issues, among other tweaks. We understand if you're not in a hurry to try this one out, but the update is available via iTunes or the software update option on your Apple device. If you're bravely rushing once more unto the breach, please let us know how it goes in the comments.

All these reports about how the new iPhones can bend and remain bent might have you asking: did Apple even do stress tests on these new devices? To answer your question, Apple invited a handful of journalists to observe its testing facilities and prove that yes, the company crushed, pushed, twisted and pounded on 15,000 iPhone 6 and 6 Plus units each before unleashing them to the public. According to the Wall Street Journal, Recode andThe Verge, each phone goes through five different tests, including one that places pressure on the center of the phone in varying degrees, using weights reaching 25 kilos. Next, weights are again pressed in the middle of the phone's display hundreds of times, followed by a test that twists the device around 8,000 times while a machine is clamping both ends.

Good news: if you want Samsung's slimmer, ritzier Galaxy Alpha in the US, you won't have to beg your Canadian friends to ship an unlocked unit across the border. AT&T hasrevealed plans to carry the Alpha starting on September 26th, the same day it launches up North. Be prepared to pay a premium for this compact yet speedy Android phone, though. The Alpha will cost $200 on a contract, or $613 contract-free. That's not much different than what you'd pay for the larger, slightly more powerful Galaxy S5 -- you'll have to really value the Alpha's metal-clad design for AT&T's pricing to make sense.

Just before Simpsons World arrives offering access to that entire series, FXNow has arrived on Apple TV set-top boxes. While Bart and Lisa make their way to the on-demand repository, the channel serves up FX series like Sons of Anarchy, The Americans, Justified, Archer and more. If you're not into those selections, movies and more from FX, FXX and FXM networks are available -- so long as you have a required cable subscription. As you may recall, FXNow is already streaming its content on Xbox One, iOS, Android, Windows 8, smart TVs and on the web.

Users of the Apple Watch have been warned about potential risks when driving.
The Department for Transport has announced that using an Apple Watch while driving will carry the same penalty as using a hand-held mobile phone of three license penalty points and a £100 fine.
The Institute of Advanced Motorists has also said that the new device could be just as dangerous as using a mobile when driving, as users will check for updates and messages.
The charity’s previous research carried out between 2006 and 2010 also found that distraction from a mobile phone was a contributory factor in over 1000 road accidents.
Neil Greig, IAM director of policy and research said: “An iWatch has the potential to be just as distracting as any other smartphone device. Indeed more so if you have to take your hand off the wheel and your eyes off the road to interact with it.
“Enforcement will be difficult for the police, but powers exist to seize and interrogate devices in the event of a serious crash. The very device that distracted you also has the power to convict you.”
The Apple Watch was revealed last week and starts at $349 and will be available in early 2015. The new device features a built-in heart rate sensor, a new watch OS, built-in speaker and microphone, plus users will feel a gentle vibration when a message is received.

iOS 8 may be trickling down into people's devices, but those long-promised health and fitness features won't be along for the ride. Apple has discovered a critical flaw in HealthKitthat's so big, it's prompted the company to pull any app that connected to the service from the App Store. According to The Next Web, apps like MyFitnessPal are now racing to prepare a HealthKit-free version of its latest update which added miCoach support. In a statement, Apple says that it's "working quickly" to fix the issue, and that HealthKit apps likeCARROT Fit, which is currently unavailable, will return to the store by the end of the month.

It seems like one giant smartphone has been getting all the attention lately, but one of its biggest rivals (literally) is finally set to touch down stateside. Samsung confirmed today that the Galaxy Note 4 will hit the US on October 17, and you can lay claim to yours starting tomorrow from all the usual carrier suspects. We've enjoyed our brief time getting to know the Note 4 and all the little improvements it brings to the table (hello, Quad HD screen!), but here's the thing -- the jury's still out on whether Samsung has done enough with its newest S-Pen experiment to make it worth an immediate upgrade. As always, pricing will vary a bit depending on who you get your service though: a Note 4 with a bog-standard two year AT&T or Verizon contract will set you back $299, while T-Mobile wants nothing upfront and monthly payments of $31.24 for the next 24 months. Alas, our friends across the pond will get a bit of a headstart on us - Notes will drop onto their store shelves a full week earlier.

Apple isn't the only one that's making its software a lot more secure, and erm, fed-proof -- Google's upcoming Android platform will apparently be encrypted by default, according toThe Washington Post. The publication didn't clarify whether it's Android's full-disk encryption, which Google first rolled out in 2011, but it did say that nobody can access the encrypted device (not even the company), unless they know its four-digit pin. Does that mean users will be forced to nominate a passcode upon setup? We don't know for sure, but with encryption in place, Mountain View (just like Apple) won't be able to assist authorities in searching your phone, so long as you keep your passcode a secret.

Need something to make today's wait for your new iPhone easier? Watching the crew at iFixit go at a brand new iPhone 6 Plus with their screwdrivers, spudgers and iSclacks probably won't help, but at least it will pass the time. They're in the middle of pulling Apple's XL-sized phone apart, and while there's not a lot new to report (it's a phone, and it has 1GB of RAM) the pics are always entertaining. The 6 Plus' 5.5-inch display also leaves room for a larger battery, and now we know that it's a 2915 mAh unit. That's about twice the size of the one in the iPhone 5s, slightly bigger than the battery in the Galaxy S 5, but smaller than the swappable 3,220mAh unit slotted inside the 5.7-inch Galaxy Note 4.

The iPad Mini and iPhone 6 Plus could be converted into a portable virtual reality headset, thanks to Toronto design firm Metatecture.
The AirVR is seeking funding on Kickstarter and hopes to be available for an affordable $49 in 2015.
The device simply works by sliding the iPad or iPhone into the AirVR, where the straps can be adjusted to fit around each user's head.
A pair of goggles has also been secured to the AirVR, which will provide the imagery.
It features 64-bit processors and graphic systems to provide clear 3D images without the need of extra wires.
However, as the images suggest, the AirVR will be stuck directly onto the user's face with the chosen Apple device, which may limit mobility, not mentioning the fact users may look a little odd with an iPad stuck to their head.
The company is seeking $20,000 in funding, and currently has secured $3,540 with 29 days to go.
This news comes after Apple revealed the iPhone 6, 6 Plus and Apple Watch last week.

As predicted, Google has just revealed the first Android One phones at an event in India today. Micromax, Karbonn and Spice Mobiles are the companies working with Google at launch, all three launching new handsets this morning. What can we expect from an Android One device? Karbonn, for example, is launching the "Sparkle V Red," (pictured below) which comes with dual SIM slots, a 4.5-inch display (480 x 854), a 5-megapixel primary camera, 1GB of RAM and, importantly, the latest version of Android (KitKat).

September 17th, 2014, 23:32 Posted By: wraggster
Apple's new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus went up for pre-order just three days ago, and as expected, they've helped set a new sales record. The company announced today that combined sales of the new 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones topped 4 million in the first 24 hours. While the company hasn't broken down sales by individual models, giving us an early insight into which form factor consumers prefer, it says that initial supply of both units are scarce, which shows people want what the bigger iPhones are capable of offering. To put that into context, Apple saw more than 2 million orders for the iPhone 5 over the same period, but the company didn't share first-day for the combined launch of the iPhone 5s and 5c, which went on to sell more than 9 million units in three days. Given that Apple is pretty much the only phone maker that indulges in obligatory back-patting during every launch window, we're unable to draw much of a comparison against its rivals. However, if you were waiting to grab a new iPhone when they go on general sale this Friday, expect to get in line super early.

Next time you come across a Kindle e-book link somewhere other than Amazon itself, you may want to make sure it's not some dubious website before you hit download or "Send to Kindle." A security researcher by the name of Benjamin Daniel Musser has discovered that the "Manage Your Kindle" page contains a security hole -- one that hackers can take advantage of with the help of e-books hiding malicious lines of code. Once you load the Kindle Library with a corrupted e-book (typically with a subject that includes <script src="https://www.example.org/script.js"></script>), a hacker gets access to your cookies, and, hence, your Amazon account credentials.
