As I see it, the biggest problem Apple's iPhone faces as a gaming platform is the flood, the sheer wall of games now available on the system.
The last I heard, and I'm sure it's well past this by now, is that there are 15,000 applications on the App Store right now, many of them games.
I try to check in on the App Store daily but find it hard to keep up with what's new and what's worthwhile. Worse still, the games are so popular that they tend to push out all other applications in the broader categories like What's Hot and What's New and Top 25.
Pocket Gamer recently sat down with Apple's senior product manager for iPhone worldwide marketing to talk about the issue and a few other things.

Taito has announced that iPhone and iPod Touch users can access versions of Space Invaders and Cooking Mama in the app store now. The Space Invaders game available in the app store is of the classic variety, but features "full use of the motion sensor and other iPhone 3G and iPod Touch input methods." As for Cooking Mama, the version available for the iPhone and iPod Touch includes "both favorite recipes from past console installments as well as a variety of dishes completely new to the series" and has been enhanced to "make the most of the iPhone 3G / iPod touch's multi-touch screen accelerometer." Nokia made plenty of folks happy with its decision to include Skype on its new N97 handset, and future N-series devices, but it looks like the usual cadre of UK carriers aren't among them, and they're now making their displeasure quite clear. That includes O2 and Orange, who are apparently threatening to refuse stock of the N97 unless Nokia strips out the Skype client, a point they have reportedly made directly to Nokia in "high-level discussions." Another unnamed "operator source" was apparently even more blunt, saying that this is "another example of them trying to build an ecosystem that is all about Nokia and reduces the operator to a dumb pipe," adding that, "some people like 3 may be in a position where it could make sense to accept that. But if you spend upwards of ÂŁ40m per year building your brand, you don't want to be just a dumb pipe do you?" For its part, Nokia seems to be staying mum on the matter for the time being, though it's tough to see a handset like the N97 just sitting on the shelf, so it seems like one party or the other will have to give sooner or later.

How bout CSI Miami full episodes streamed to your iPhone, legally... for free? CBS Interactive's TV.com give you just that. There aren't a ton of shows up yet (at least not full episodes), but CSI, Star Trek (the original!), and Gossip Girl (you know you've seen it) are all there.
TV.com (its an app, AND a website!) allows you to create "feeds" of shows you'd like based on keywords. You put in a few shows you like or terms, and the app creates a specialized feed of content you'd enjoy.
I'm sure more full shows will be coming quickly.
The app works over WiFi or 3G, and is available now for the low low price of free in the AppStore.

The iPhone (2.2 +) comes pre-loaded with Emoji icons but the menus to turn them on aren't enabled. If you aren't familiar with Emoji icons they are popular pictures/emotions used in Japanese wireless messages. The iPhone comes pre-loaded with these little icons but the menus are disabled.
Aside from the Cydia download to enable them there are many applications on the AppStore like Typing Genius ($0.99) and Spell Number (free) that enable these Emoji icons. Apple doesn't seem to like developers on the AppStore enabling this Easter egg on its devices. Apple removed the application

Back in January we covered ZumoDrive Beta cloud storage and then showed a first look of their iPhone App. As of earlier this week ZumoDrive has gone from beta to public and made some major updates to the service while they were at it.
With the beta I had two major issues. The pricing was a concern with 70GB of cloud storage running a whopping $20.99/mo. Many others also voiced their opinions about the pricing and the folks at ZumoDrive listened. While pricing is still slightly higher than their competitors, the ZumoDrive service is also more innovative making it worthwhile (at least for me and my iTunes library).

CBS app offers full episodes of top shows as well as clips, news updates and info.
CBS Interactive has released a free application for iPhone and iPod touch based on its TV.com online brand, giving users access to shows such as the original Star Trek.
The app also allows users the option to create custom video feeds based on TV shows, channels and topics. These personalised feeds proactively recommend content based on user-selected keywords and past viewing history.
CBS Mobile developed the app in conjunction with its technology partner, Veveo, which supplied vTap video search and personalisation software.
TV.com for iPhone offers full streamed episodes CSI, NCIS, The Young And The Restless and - from Paramount - Beverly Hills 90210 and the original Star Trek. Additional content includes twenty CNET TV shows.
Jeff Sellinger, EVP and General Manager at CBS Mobile, said: "CBS Mobile is excited to be on Apple's App Store with our application for TV.com, where TV lives online — and now on iPhone and iPod touch. Fans can now watch their favorite shows, great clips and create custom channels whenever and wherever they want."

Denki MD says portal's returns policy “forces developers to be accountable”.
Following increasing agitation amongst development circles concerning Google’s controversial 24-hour returns policy for apps downloaded from the Android Market, Denki MD Colin Anderson has leapt to the defence of the system.
Anderson told Develop's sister site CasualGaming.biz: “At last – someone’s forcing developers to be accountable for the games they pump out their front door.

"Ballmer re-affirmed his oft-repeated statement that Microsoft will not be making a Microsoft Phone, saying it was committed to the licensing model... Regarding the operating system itself, Steve Ballmer mentioned the unveiling of Windows Mobile 6.5 last week, and also clearly stated Windows Mobile 7 will be coming next year. He noted that he felt the continuing expansion of the smartphone segment into the whole phone segment should help Windows Mobile to continue growing despite the downturn in the economy, and that Windows Mobile is particularly well suited for low cost smartphones with many different from factors."

Analyst predicts that "iPod Touch could be final nail in PSP's coffin"
Sony’s surprise announcement of a number of big-hitting PSP titles yesterday proves that it remains firmly committed to its portable platform – but one analyst has said that Apple could yet prove to be a fatal thorn in Sony’s side.
Speaking to MCV’s sister site CasualGaming.biz today, Game Brief’s Nicholas Lovell stated: “The iPod Touch is rapidly becoming the portable media player of choice amongst a younger audience, exactly the place that Sony wanted to be with the PSP.
“But the iPod doesn’t have expensive processors or a unique format disc like the UMD; it is an easy-to-use device that offers consumers their music, podcasts, short-form video and accessible games on the move and in my opinion, will be the final nail in the PSP’s coffin.”

Sure, we're still anticipating -- but not necessarily merrily -- the release of Windows Mobile 6.5, but for those who wish to look even farther into the future, Microsoft head honcho Steve Ballmer said in a conference call this week that WinMo 7 will be out sometime next year. That jibes pretty well with what we've heard from Motorola and ZDNet before, although there's probably a dozen or so known unknowns that could push it well into 2011 or beyond. For now, however, we're willing to take Steve at his word. Hey, at least they're not gearing up for a Windows Mobile 6.75 in the interim... right?

In lieu of his announcement that he will not be continuing development of Stacks after version 2.2 Steven Troughton-Smith has revealed that his next iPhone project will be Dashboard. For those that are unfamiliar with OS X, Dashboard is a nifty little area that holds/displays widgets like clock, currency converters, weather, dictionary, and countless more all on one screen.
Dashboard on the iPhone could be a very neat way to throw a bunch of useful but compact widgets on one screen of the iPhone for quick access and we hope to see it released sometime soon. The video above is by Steven and is his Dashboard program running within the SDK. Looks smooth so far.

In a recent interview with MTV.com id Software founder John Carmack spilled the beans revealing id's plans to bring the classic titles of Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein to the iPhone.
Quote:
But literally before I came in on this interview, I was going around poking with some of our old titles. I’m really looking forward to bringing over an id classics line — start with “Wolfenstein 3D” and go through “Doom” and “Quake” and bring pretty much all of them over to the iPhone because I’m a really big booster of the platform. And it frustrates me to no end that here we are without product

Witness the story of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots as told via the iPhone, in the action-packed official trailer for Metal Gear Solid Touch. As revealed last week, Metal Gear Solid Touch basically retells the story of Metal Gear Solid 4 from a different perspective, with an over-the-shoulder view of Solid Snake's mullet as you tap the screen to take out enemies. I suppose it will be nice for those who want a quick synopsis of the story without have to sit through all of the cutscenes, but beyond that it doesn't look all that exciting. Having said that, it will sell millions.
