This is the service we've formerly heard referred to as Skyline Skybox. Scott Rockfeld, Director in the Windows Mobile group at Microsoft, gave this public statement today:
"Today, Microsoft's My Phone Web site went live prior to its scheduled debut. However, we are excited about the new Microsoft My Phone service, which will be available as a limited, invite-only beta. This is a significant milestone for Microsoft as it connects the phone to the PC and Web, making mobility a key pillar for the company's software+services strategy.
This new Microsoft cloud service syncs critical information (e.g., contacts, calendar appointments, tasks, text messages, photos, video, etc) on a user's mobile phone to a password protected Web site. Once synchronized, people can easily back-up and restore mobile phone data. My Phone provides an easy to use Web portal where people can access and manage content on the phone, and share that information with others.
My Phone helps people:
• Keep their information backed up if they lose or break their phones.
• Transition information if they switch to new phones.
• Access the same information from their phone or PC."
This is shaping up to be a very interesting service in a number of ways - first, at launch it's going to be free. Second, if you've already got a phone synching with an Exchange server, your calendar/contacts/tasks. This is, essentially, Exchange ActiveSync for the rest of the world who's not using Exchange. We'll see how it plays out - especially how locked-in it is to Windows Live services. Will it play nice if you're using other services? Even if it doesn't, this could be THE killer reason for some people to switch to Windows Live services instead of competing services from Google, Yahoo, etc. Check out the My Phone site for more details.

A few weeks back, we launched our /Cydia section on MMi - which catalogs and displays packages from tons of repositories for Jay Freeman's Cydia™ application.
We've been working hard to improve this area, and have added some great features, including:
Comments. You can now comment on any package we catalog, simply by pressing reply. It works off your ModMyi.com login, and even shows your avatar if you have one.
Rating. Like an app/theme? Hate it? Rate it. Hover over the stars and click between 1-5 stars.
RSS. Lot's of people asked for this, so we've now got it. MMi is the only place you can get an RSS feed of the recent items in Cydia.

An iPhone Carrier Settings Update was pushed out by iTunes recently. What's in it? Among carrier images for some new carriers like the UAE's Emirates (iPhone should be coming to them in a week or so), carrier images for AT&T's MicroCell (site under maintenance at time of story writing) service are now included. MicroCell is essentially a tiny cell tower which gets 3G signal from broadband internet.

At the New York Comic Con today, Bethesda Softworks executive producer Todd Howard, responsible for overseeing Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls series, said that one of his company's next project is an iPhone game.
Howard dropped the news of pursuing Apple's portable platform during today's "Vs. Mode Live" panel, in which he, BioShock lead Ken Levine, Newsweek's N'Gai Croal and MTV's Stephen Totilo flapped their gums about games to the delight of Comic Con masses. Croal dropped word of the reveal on his Twitter, offering no further info.
For all we know, it could be Fallout Touch. Bethesda is no stranger to portable development, publishing The Elder Scrolls Travels for Java-enabled cell phones and Nokia's N-gage.
Additional highlights from the panel can be reviewed at MTV's summary of the roundtable.

Dataviz, well-known for their Palm OS software, are promising to bring MS Office editing to the iPhone via their new app, DocumentsToGo. The app will be demoed at the Mobile World Congress which runs February 16-19 in Barcelona. The app will also run on Android.
Pricing information has not been released, but the app for Palm OS runs $89.99 in its fullest form, with two lighter version at $49.99 (doesn't support Outlook on that version) and $29.99 (missing a ton of features, like Mac-created doc support). It'd be interesting to see if they stay at that price point or try to go lower - they really have no competition in this arena.

We're just ten days away from whatever Microsoft has to announce at Mobile World Congress, and it looks like the company is trying to put a halt to the endless rumors that it's developing a phone: WinMo director Scott Rockfield told CNET it's not happening, and another Microsoft spokesman just denied it to the Wall Street Journal. That should be enough to shut people up, right? Of course not -- no denials by anyone ever have been -- but unless Stiv Ballmers actually pulls a Zunephone out of his pocket next week, we're going to assume that Microsoft is on the level with us, persistent rumors of some crazy Tegra-powered superphone notwithstanding. We are willing to believe that the company is planning on rebranding Windows Mobile as "Windows Phone," however -- yeah, it's a Digitimes rumor, but it makes a lot of sense to us, and it's an easy way to capitalize on the launch of a new version. We'll see what happens, we suppose -- honestly, we just want a US launch of the Compulab Exeda.
P.S.- Mary Jo Foley at ZDNet says what's more likely is that Microsoft is working on several Windows Mobile reference hardware designs -- including one based on Tegra -- which we find much more believable and lines up nicely with some other whispers we've heard.

Nintendo's lawyers have finally done what countless children of the '80s only dreamed of: silenced the maniacal, mocking laughter of the Duck Hunt dog. ... Or at least they've quieted the canine on iPhones, having a clone of the classic removed from the App Store after only a month of availability.
Let this serve as a reminder to all who might try a similar stunt ... there's only room for one company in this industry to coast on the past successes of Nintendo.

n many ways modern cellphones are little more than high-tech pieces of jewelry that keep you connected to the world while looking great pressed to your ear. Barb at Etsy's "iPhone G3" earrings eschew all that unnecessary functionality and focus on the aesthetics, shrinking a pair of handsets the same way she miniaturized two Wiimotes, turning them into tiny charms to dangle from your earlobes -- head decor that's sure to light up the eyes of every male geek in the room. A pair are yours for just $22, which is a fair bit more affordable than the real things.

We've seen plenty of remarkable kids -- the world is just bursting with them -- and Lim Ding Wen, a nine-year-old from Singapore is no exception. Like his father, Wen enjoys writing iPhone apps in his spare time. His application, called Doodle Kids, is a drawing application for children that he wrote for his two younger sisters, who enjoy drawing, and it's already been downloaded over 4,000 times (we just checked in the App Store and it does indeed appear to be quite popular) since its release on February 1st. Wen, who is fluent in six programming languages and enjoys reading books about -- you guessed it -- computer programming, is already hard at work on his next app, a game called "Invader Wars." We can't wait to see that one!

We were on the right track with the Time Crisis Strike trademark. Namco Bandai was working on a new Time Crisis game, but its only for iPhones. Since the $5.99 downloadable game doesn’t come with a tiny little light gun you poke Wild Dog’s enforcers to shoot them with a semi-automatic pistol. Ducking, a hallmark of the Time Crisis series, is done by tilting the phone. Beat Wild Dog in arcade mode and you unlock four additional Crisis Missions to play.
Kudos to Namco Networks for making adaptive controls, but Time Crisis Strike is hardly a new light gun game. I’ll pass on this and keep my fingers crossed for a Nintendo DS or WiiWare port.
