So we knew a select number of authorized resellers would start stocking iPhones soon, and thanks to a tipster, it looks like we might be getting a glimpse at a none-too-surprising recipient of the new order. As these pics from an anonymous tipster show, "big hug for your mobile life" retailer The Shack will be getting AT&T's flagship device soon, with a letter supposedly from EVP of store operations Bryan Bevin (found after the break) adding that the 3G and 3GS rollout will begin this month at some company-owned locations in the Dallas Forth Worth and New York City areas, with a nationwide rollout in 2010. Not that you necessarily needed more places to tempt you with the device, but it's always fun to have options.

Apple is officially in the market for a new top cop on their jailbreak police force. With the booming business that is jailbreaking only growing bigger by the day, Apple is planning to seriously crack down on the ease with which hackers exploit the iPhone platform and modify their devices' operating systems.
And Apple isn't making any secret of its intentions. In fact, a new position is posted for all to see on the company's website. They are hoping in the very near future to fill the position of "iPhone OS Platform Security Manager" - aka, a jailbreak cop.
Apple Insider reports that "The company is looking for someone to oversee its team which ensures secure booting and installation of the iPhone OS and protecting and hardening it against outside threats."

Einar Rosenberg, Chief Technology Officer of Narian Technologies, is being widely quoted today about speculation that Apple is currently tinkering with a radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip for possible inclusion in the next generation iPhone.
Quote:
Had to share this news. A highly reliable source has informed me that Apple has built some prototypes of the next gen iPhone with an RFID reader built in and they have seen it in action. So its not full NFC but its a start for real service discovery and I'm told that the reaction was very positive that we can expect this in the next gen iPhone.

A new patent application revealed this week shows future Apple plans for an online service that would allow users to sync multiple devices - such as Macs, iPhones, and Apple TVs - making not just files but also live application states portable and accessible wherever they go. The patent may give new clues to the purpose of the massive $1 billion data center Apple is building in North Carolina.
The filing with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, dated September 30, 2008, was revealed in a story on AppleInsider today. It describes a system that lets a user sync both personal files and live projects in their applications, so that one could literally pick up where one left off, moving from home computer to iPhone to work

The fact the iPhone is a veritable wild west for developers can often be a good thing. Then again, when shadier outfits start releasing shadier apps, it can also be a bad thing.
Take iPhone game developer Storm8, for example. A class action lawsuit filed in San Francisco alleges that the company, who are behind iPhone games like World War, iMobsters and Vampires Live, "has written the software for all its games in such a way that it automatically accesses, collects, and transmits the wireless telephone number of each iPhone user who downloads any Storm8 game".
Apparently this number-farming went unannounced until August, when Storm8 finally fessed up, saying it was a"bug". Michael Turner, the man filing the suit, says "poppycock" to that, and is after damages.

Currently, mobile entrepreneurs wishing to hawk their wares on the Pre (or Pixi, or unnamed webOS device of the future) use a software development kit from Palm called Mojo, a stack of Java-based tools that must be installed, studied, understood, loved, and respected before serious development can get underway. Palm sees that as a barrier of entry for web-oriented developers who want to make the leap to mobile apps, though, which is why they've crafted a new SDK called Ares that's based entirely on web technologies -- in fact, there's no install at all, apparently. Much of the interface is said to be drag-and-drop with enough JavaScript exposed to make your local .com designer feel right at home, potentially opening the app landscape to a whole new set of folks -- and considering that the App Catalog is tens of thousands of goodies behind the App Store and Android Market, they can use every loyal dev they get.

You know that smartphone you love, that ultimate expression of handheld convergence that some would call a mobile computer? It's crap. Or so says octogenarian, Martin Cooper, former lead engineer at Motorola said to have invented the handheld cellphone -- really, his name is on the "Radio telephone system" patent and he's credited with making the very first private handheld cellphone call from a busy New York City street on April 3rd, 1973. Well Marty doesn't like those newfangled handsets. In fact, according to our sterling Mr. Cooper, "Our future I think is a number of specialist devices that focus on one thing that will improve our lives." Words uttered this week during a conference in Madrid. Imagine it: a future where we carry a portable radio, film camera, wind-up watch, Kaypro luggable computer, HP calculator, and Atari handheld... oh wait, that was the eighties.

So says research firm FADE. But nobody's making a fortune yet
The launch of the HTC Hero handset, as well as improvements to the Android Market, led to a 53% rise in Android games revenues in October, claims FADE.
The company's research indicates that Google's app store generated around $180,000 of revenues from game sales in October.
Is anyone making a fortune? Not yet. FADE estimates that the top-selling Android game, Lupis Labs' Robo Defense, sold 7,600 units during October at a $2.99 price point - just over $22,700 in revenue.
FADE claims that in the seven months since paid apps were introduced on Android Market, games firms have made a total of $850,000. However, it predicts that November will see sales jump 50% to $270,000 for that month alone, buoyed by more handset

Fortune magazine compares Apple CEO to Henry Ford and Juan Trippe
Steve Jobs – the face of Apple, who spearheaded the firm’s push into the MP3 player and mobile phone sectors – has been voted CEO of the decade by Fortune magazine.
"Remaking any one business is a career-defining achievement; four is unheard-of,” read Fortune’s tribute to the Apple CEO.
"In the past 10 years alone [Jobs] has radically and lucratively reordered three markets – music, movies, and mobile telephones,” read the report, “and his impact on his original industry, computing, has only grown.
The tribute to Jobs compares his achievements to pioneers in other industries, such as Henry Ford establishing the auto industry and Juan Trippe inventing the global airline.
Fortune claimed that such entrepreneurs pioneered in a market that had no real competition and no leader.
“The industries that Jobs has turned topsy-turvy already existed when he focused on them," the publication said.

Guinness, Nike, Pepsi, Tesco, Disney, Volkswagen and Starbucks are among the many big brands who have launched their own iPhone apps in the last two months alone.
A rundown of recent App Store releases on sister site ME reveals that not only are these brands focusing almost exclusively on iPhone, but that they're making use of key platform features like GPS, connectivity, social networking and in-app payments.
By contrast, rival App Stores like Android Market, BlackBerry App World and Ovi Store are looking decidedly light on these kinds of apps, despite theoretically offering a much larger audience.
Their challenge right now is to seize back mindshare from Apple among the big brands, not to mention correcting some of the problems that have stopped brands from venturing beyond the App Store.

It's not exactly the native unlock we've been waiting for, but those of you in Europe dying for a Pre unshackled from O2 will be happy to know that the Rebel Simcard II is now compatible with Palm's first webOS device. The ÂŁ10.99 / $17.95 accessory card slots in between your carrier's SIM and the Pre's SIM slot, bypassing the Pre's network locks and allowing full access to voice and data services including 3G. Sadly, the Pre doesn't have the radio support to make this work in the States on anything but EDGE, but at least it's a start, right? Video after the break.

Palm device owners have little to complain about when it comes to webOS; not after enduring Garnet and empty Access promises for so long. Still, that OS which relies so heavily upon web technologies like HTML 5, JavaScript, and CSS can be surprisingly sluggish when compared to other smartphone OSes. Now we have a hint as to why thanks to Palm's Ben Galbraith and Dion Almae who made an interesting admission Tuesday related to the Pre's UI latency compared to the iPhone 3GS -- a phone based on the same ARM architecture. According to the duo, "the path to the GPU didn't exist" in webOS, something that will be solved in the "immediate future" using CSS transforms to modify visual elements thus freeing-up CPU cycles for other tasks. Hmm, immediate future sure sounds like a webOS update to accompany the Palm Pixi release on November 15th.

November 4th, 2009, 19:52 Posted By: wraggster
id Software co-founder John Carmack has made known his ambitions for developing iPhone games, but at the same time revealed that his studio hasn’t quite got the resources to match them.
Carmack, whose longstanding studio was acquired by Zenimax earlier in the year, revealed in a blog post that id will dedicate just two of its whole workforce to full-time iPhone game development.
“Everything is still an experiment for us on the iPhone,” he said, “and we are learning lessons with each product.”
Carmack revealed that he wants to build a Rage-themed iPhone title to coincide with the release of the PC, PS3 and 360 edition of the game in 2010.
But the studio co-founder explained the studio doesn’t have “a firm direction or team chosen” to work on such a title.
“I was very excited about doing a really-designed-for-the-iPhone first person shooter, but at this point I am positive that I don't have the time available for it,” he added.
“I doubt I will be able to personally open Xcode again for a few months, but I do plan on trying to work out a good touch interface for Quake Classic and the later 6DOF games.
“I also very much want to make at least a tech demo that can run media created with a version of our idTech 5 megatexture content creation pipeline. I'm not sure exactly what game I would like to do with it, so it might be a 500 mb free gee-whiz app...”

The App Store is now home to over 100,000 apps, while downloads have surpassed the two billion mark, Apple has announced.
At the end of September, the number of apps stood at 85,000, with over 125,000 developers signed up to Apple's iPhone Developer Programme. A breakdown of category content on the store found that games are by far the most popular type of app available, accounting for 19.6 per cent of the Store's content.
"The App Store, now with over 100,000 applications available, is clearly a major differentiator for millions of iPhone and iPod touch customers around the world," said Apple's senior VP of worldwide product marketing, Philip Schiller. "The iPhone SDK created the first great platform for mobile applications and our customers are loving all of the amazing apps our developers are creating."
"The App Store has forever changed the mobile gaming industry and continues to improve," added Travis Boatman, EA Mobile's VP of worldwide studios. "With a global reach of over 50 million iPhone and iPod touch users, the App Store has allowed us to develop high quality EA games that have been a huge success with customers."
Apple's digital store is now available in 77 countries. A new App Purchase feature recently introduced by the platform holder now allows developers to sell content, subscriptions and digital services directly to users from within their applications.

Users began grumbling about the 750MB cap on Orange's so-called "unlimited" data plan as soon as it was announced. Close reading of the Terms and Conditions of Orange's service, however, reveals even more restrictions, which poses the question: how many limits can you put on a plan and still call it "unlimited?"
The word "unlimited" in Orange's rate plan listing is followed by an asterisk, which points to a notification that “Fair Usage policy of 750MB/month applies.” Somewhat misleading, but entirely legal in the United Kingdom, where a court ruled last January that a Blackberry data plan with a 250 MB cap could still be called "unlimited."
