Nokia has just announced the Nokia 5230, a lower end S60 5th Edition (Symbian OS v9.4) smartphone, featuring single ARM11-based 434 MHz CPU, 70 MB internal storage memory and microSD memory card slot (up to 16 GB), 3.2" (640x360 pixel) display, 2 Megapixel camera, A-GPS, dual-band WCDMA (HSDPA), quad-band GSM, Bluetooth 2.0 (with A2DP and AVRCP), high-speed USB 2.0 and 3.5 mm audio jack. The phone will be available in three variants: WCDMA 2100/900, 2100/850 and 1900/850. The basic version will cost €149 before taxes, and the "Comes With Music" version will cost €259. To reach this price level, the device will not include WiFi, there will be no memory card included, and the camera is an entry level, low resolution one. While feature-wise this phone won't be a competition killer, the price (for what it gives in exchange, i.e. a fully functional touchscreen, HSDPA smartphone with A-GPS and good music capabilities) surely is a big advantage. Available in six different colours (red, pink, blue, yellow, silver, dark silver), weighing 113 g and measuring 111 x 51.7 x 14.5 mm (78 cc), i.e. almost identically as the 5800 XpressMusic, the device will start shipping in the fourth quarter of 2009.

New version 1.1 of the Skyfire web browser has been released, bringing a number of updates and improvements, including better recognition of mobile websites, support for WAP sites, better reconnection, and optimized scrolling and zooming. Skyfire is a "server side" browser similar to Opera Mini, rendering web pages on a proxy server and delivering a ready-to-display page to the mobile phone, providing support for Flash, Silverlight, Javascript, Quicktime and more. Unfortunately, the browser still only support S60 3rd Edition phones so owners of 5th Edition touchscreen devices will need to wait for another update.

Noticed this DIY iPhone dock while trolling around on Flickr earlier; it's a bit old, but i couldn't pass this one up.
Apple included an iPhone dock with the first release of the iPhone but has since removed the dock as a prepackaged accessory. The dock, a little bit of plastic with some little connection bits costs a ridiculous $49 via the Apple Store. That price was just too high for Flickr user sayesbury so he came up with his own innovative and unique DIY dock using the iPhone's packaging.

I wanted a dock stand for the iphone, but I could not believe Apple want ÂŁ35 for it.

The International Trade Commission is investigating Apple for a possible flash memory patent violation after BTG International, the patent holder, filed a claim.
Quote:
The complaint alleges that (the companies) unlawfully import into the U.S., sell for importation, and sell within the U.S. after importation certain MLC flash memory chips and products containing the same, which allegedly infringe BTG’s U.S. Patent Nos. 5,394,362, 5,764,571, 5,872,735, 6,104,640, and 6,118,692,
Specifically the patents "relate to methods and apparatuses for programming and reading Flash memory cells that store more than a single bit of information per cell;” which Apple has implemented in ALL of its current iPods and iPhones except for the iPod Classic.
BTG International is requesting the the International Trade Commission orders that chips and products that have chips that violate the patents are barred from importation into the US. BTG International is also lobbying for a cease and desist..

Want to boost the popularity of your latest iPhone app? Ask Reverb Communications! 'When it comes to winning in the App Store, this PR firm has discovered a dynamite strategy: throw ethics out the window. Reverb Communications, a PR firm that represents dozens of game publishers and developers, has managed to find astounding success on Apple's App Store for its clients. Among its various tactics? It hires a team of interns to trawl iTunes and other community forums posing as real users, and has them write positive reviews for their client's applications. ... Reverb claims that their clients have sold over $2 billion of product under their watch

[Mike] sent in this project he’s been working on. He has posted instructions on how to get your Palm Pre to tweet its GPS coordinates at regular intervals. It does require that you have Linux installed on your Pre, but that’s not that big of an issue as he has a tutorial for that too. Getting the tweet to happen involves setting up a custom PHP file that sends the tweet, then a cron job to get it to run on a schedule. He mentions this could be use full for finding a lost phone as well as keeping track of loved ones. We would like to see him ad a script to do similar with a picture. Maybe take a picture and upload it every time a call is placed?

There isn't a lot to go by here, but if the Wall Street Journal's sources are to believed, recently-returned Apple CEO Steve Jobs is currently focusing the vast majority of his attention on the oft rumored tablet device, micromanaging every detail much in the way he did with the iPhone. The report also says that the tablet project has been twice killed by Jobs in recent years -- first time because of bad battery life, which we get, and second because of insufficient memory, which seems a little less believable. Interestingly and uncharacteristically, Jobs took it upon himself to respond, saying via email, "much of your information is incorrect." If Apple really is ramping up to unveiling a tablet, the first of its kind for the company, we have no doubt Jobs would be personally watching over every minute detail of it -- what we really want to know is when we might see something materialize, and that's still very much a mystery

Farhad Manjoo writes in Slate that while the iPhone commands nearly 14 percent of smartphone sales and BlackBerry about 21 percent, Android has only 3 percent. And even though Android is far friendlier to developers, it has failed to attract anywhere near the number of apps now clogging the iPhone. Manjoo writes that Google went wrong by giving handset manufacturers and carriers too much control over the design and marketing of Android phones so there is no idealized 'Google phone' — instead, Android devices get names like the T-Mobile G1 or the myTouch 3G, and each is marketed separately and comes with its own distinct capabilities and shortcomings. 'Outside handset manufacturers lack ambition — -none of them even seems to be trying to match the capabilities of the iPhone, let alone to knock us down with features that far surpass those of Apple's device,' writes Manjoo. 'A smart handset manufacturer could build a top-of-the-line Android device that outshines Apple's phone in at least a few areas — better battery life, a much better Web browser, a brighter or bigger screen, faster or more functional controls... something that might help Android inspire gadget lust. But so far, that's not happening.' John Gruber echoes this advice and adds this advice to Android manufacturers: 'If Apple is BMW, you can be Porsche.

Google has opened up a new Android Developer Challenge for submissions. About $2,000,000 in prize money is available, with $250,000 going to the best overall app. Submissions are due by August 31, leaving about a week to get apps in for judging. Time is short, but the prizes are big. Hopefully we’ll see some exciting things come from the contestants now that the community has grown since the previous ADC in 2008.

Apple has confirmed that its new operating system, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, will be released on 28 August.
Snow Leopard is Apple's biggest operating system update since the firm moved from the "Classic" OS in 2001.
Apple said the new operating system (OS) is almost half the size of previous versions, freeing up to 7GB of drive space once installed.
Snow Leopard is currently the number two best seller on Amazon.com and will retail at ÂŁ25 in the UK ($29 in US).
The release had been slated for September but the firm announced the revised release date on Monday.
The new version updates on the old 10.5.7 Leopard OS and Apple say that its "support for 64-bit processors makes use of large amounts of RAM, increases performance and improves security while remaining compatible with 32-bit applications".
"Snow Leopard builds on our most successful operating system ever and we're happy to get it to users earlier than expected," said Bertrand Serlet, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering.
Apple's main thrust has been on improving the OS performance, rather than creating new features for the user.
The OS will also come with built-in support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 that Apple says will allow users to employ Snow Leopard's mail, contacts, and calendar applications while accessing Windows-based network services.

Theiphoneblog carries a nice article on the reason Apple rejected the Google Voice application even though it doesn't violate any terms and services. The article goes in depth over the issue of controlling the hardware (Apple) vs controlling the software (Google & Apple so far) and how Apple doesn't want Google to take over a critical part of its phone. Just like Google is going into the OS business to make sure it gets never cut out, Apple is also building a huge datacenter to — they guess — take over some online cloud computing business of their own and be less dependent on Google for these services.

It is possible to have an iPhone unlocked via Apple rather than jailbreaking and running ultrasn0w according to Olly Farshi of theappleblog.com.
Being located out of Europe Farshi is subscribed to a carrier other than AT&T (of course). His carrier is Sonera in Finland and he bought an iPhone 3G with them last year when they were the fresh hot and new thing to have.
Farshi, like most iPhone users, bought his iPhone 3G complete with a 2 yr carrier contract. When the iPhone 3GS arrived on the scen he upgraded. Normal thing. Tons of us did the same. The difference lies with the carrier Sonera who gave him the option to pay off the remainder of his original 3G contract which he did.
With the iPhone 3G contract paid off Farshi set after getting it unlocked officially - it is his and the carrier had been paid off after all. He contacted Sonera who..

According to the most recent ChangeWave survey the iPhone rates very high in customer approval while less than half of users like AT&T. The survey pulled nearly 2000 iPhone users to come up with their results.
The survey showed some interesting results with the iPhone getting a "near-perfect satisfaction rating." 8 out of 10 iPhone owners gave the device "very satisfied" while 17% said that they were "somewhat satisfied."
Paul Carton, research director at ChangeWave Research commented
Quote:
Extraordinary . . . That's the highest ratings we have ever had for any smartphone, including previous iPhones.
The good news stopped there. The survey also covered iPhone users satisfaction with the carrier AT&T which yielded.

Recently there has been some fuss over the fact that companies like pinchmedia, medialytics etc have been tracking iPhone users on a level that is almost disturbing... They are able to tell Phone model, Your location and weather you are jailbroken (just to name a few). well after a few days and 30+ ideas on how to stop this, saurik found that the best way was to confront the pinch media and medialytics companies and they worked out a way to stop their tracking on jailbroken phones without damaging other services.
As you will notice this comes with an update to Mobile Substrate and a simple preferences pane that allows users to choose weather or not they want to block each individual service.

We're always a little hesitant to get too optimistic about changes to the App Store approval process, but it looks like there's been a few hopeful changes to the way things are done in the past few days, which could well lead to some previously rejected apps becoming available. Perhaps the most encouraging sign is that Apple seems to actually be going back through rejected apps and contacting develops to resubmit their app (without any changes, mind you) for an "expedited review." One such app is the Start Mobile Wallpaper Gallery, which was rejected for using Shepard Fairey's famous "HOPE" image of Barack Obama on the grounds that it "ridicules public figures." In other App Store news, the developer of the officially-licensed C64 emulator also says that it was contacted by a senior director at Apple, who reportedly said that there was "BIG news coming," but didn't elaborate any further. But, really, is there any news bigger than a C64 emulator?

When Palm lets any new apps into the App Catalog, it's news. Why? because there are only, like 40 apps to start with, and since additions are hand-chosen, they're usually pretty great. Then, this.
Here's the news, run through some kind of obligatory excitement filter:
The first app is Word Ace, a must-have game for any Pre users.
Then there's Mileage Monitor, the title explains what the app is.
Bubbles!, another game from the developers that brought you Spades. Goal of game, connect bubbles of the same color and pop them.
ESPN Zoom, a Photo hunt game.
Kosher2Go, Kosher database.
And last but not least, Shabbat Shalom, this app will allow you to quickly check the candle lighting times, havdalah time and parsha for the week in any location in the world.
There's nothing specifically wrong with these apps—Word Ace actually sounds pretty cool, especially for a Pre game—but usually when Palm opens the gates, it's for something a little more, I dunno, subtantial? I mean, I love me some Judaic ceremonial planning apps, but is this really what your Early Access app approval backlog looks like? Unofficial homebrew apps are starting to get pretty impressive, so beyond the odd game maybe throw in a Last.fm client or a photo editor or something, just to let everyone know you're still in this.
