The Wall Street Journal has a very interesting article about the likely reasons that AT&T and Apple killed the Google Voice application." 'With Google Voice, you have one Google phone number that callers use to reach you, and you pick up whichever phone--office, home or cellular--rings. You can screen calls, listen in before answering, record calls, read transcripts of your voicemails, and do free conference calls. Domestic calls and texting are free, and international calls to Europe are two cents a minute. In other words, a unified voice system, something a real phone company should have offered years ago.'

We always suspected the iPhone 3GS was capable of 1080p HD video playback, and now we've got proof. Although Apple lists the iPhone 3Gs's max video playback res at just 640x480, iLounge linked to Chinese forum post claiming that the 3GS could do 30Mbps 1080p playback earlier today -- and when we saw that the only thing we needed to do to test it out was download the free FileAid app, well, you know how we've just spent the last 20 minutes. We tested out a bunch of HD trailers from Apple's QuickTime trailer site, some videos we shot with a Lumix DMC-GH1 and some other random videos with general success, but there were some major hiccups: high bitrate 720p video off the GH1 stuttered during playback, and loading the Avatar trailer consistently crashed the phone's audio driver until we restarted. We tried the same thing on an iPhone 3G and just got error messages at almost every resolution, so it seems like it's a combination of the 3GS's extra horsepower and different built-in software at work here -- software that's clearly not ready for prime-time, as evidenced by the bugs. We're hoping Apple is polishing that up and getting ready to unlock this functionality, since it'd be sweet to just plug into an HDTV and play video -- anyone listening out there in Cupertino? Video after the break.

It is now clear why Nokia has been so slow with S60 updates: the upcoming N900 just left everything else in the dust. Unlike Google's Linux platform, Nokia is not intentionally breaking compatibility with real distros, choosing instead to bring you the unmatchable power of GNU/Linux on your phone. This is the most awesome device I have ever seen: MAP3 CPU/GPU, 3,5" 800x480 touchscreen, keyboard, Wi-Fi, HSPA, GPS; 5-MP camera, CZ lens, 32 GB storage, SD slot; X11, VT100 terminal emulator, APT package manager. Estimated price without credit: $780 (N.5800: $390, iPhone 3GS: $750). Developers should note that even though the current desktop is still GTK+, Qt will be standard across all Nokia platforms in the near future (less powerful phones will use Qt on the Symbian kernel). Users can download flashing software from Nokia, and patches can be submitted at the Maemo site

A Bloomberg report that Apple CEO Steve Jobs proposed a possibly illegal truce with Palm against poaching their respective employees is sure to pique the interest of the US Department of Justice, which already is investigating whether Google, Yahoo, Apple, Genentech and other tech companies conspired to keep others from stealing their top talent. 'Your proposal that we agree that neither company will hire the other's employees, regardless of the individual's desires, is not only wrong, it is likely illegal,' former Palm CEO Ed Colligan reportedly told Jobs in August 2007."
The article notes that Apple was probably reacting to Palm's hiring of Jon Rubenstein, who had been instrumental in developing the iPod and went on to spearhead the Pre for Palm (and has now become Palm's chairman and CEO). "It's the story about the importance of charismatic engineers," said veteran Silicon Valley forecaster Paul Saffo. "People don't work for Palm. They work for Jon Rubinstein. One has to wonder how Steve Jobs ever let Jon Rubinstein leave.

Reasons to hack, or "root," your Android handset: Custom OS upgrades, PC tethering, full-phone SD backups. Reason not to: It's really scary. At least it was, until now.
RyeBrye has pieced together an Android app that does all the rooting legwork, a process that used to range from mildly intimidating to headache-inducing. In either case, the prospect was always daunting for the mainstream, which kept the joys of an unbound Android from most G1 and MyTouch owners. With this app, here's the new, streamlined procedure:
• Download "Recovery Flasher" From the Android Market (or sideload it)
• Run it
• Tap "Back up recovery image"
• Tap "Flash Cyanogen Recovery 1.4"
Seriously, that's it. Now your Android phone is splayed wide open, and ready for you to have your way with it. But, uh, what does that mean, exactly?
Plenty of things! The biggest draw to rooting is the ability to install a new ROM—in other words, replace the operating system on your phone. There are two ways to go with this, both equally awesome. The first is to go with a super-customized community ROM. These are tweaked and enhanced versions of the phone's default software, often grafted with pieces of Google's forthcoming updates to Android, some near, some far, and all dessert-themed. Practically, this means multitouch—since the G1 and MyTouch already support this on the hardware side—app storage on SD cards, tethering, more home screens, new system keyboards, and perhaps most importantly, vastly improved performance. A lot of users say using one of these is a night-and-day difference, and given the kinds of things the HTC ROM community has done with Windows Mobile phones, I'm inclined to believe them.
Your second path is to go full Hero—in other words, to install the HTC Hero's heavily customized OS, which is nothing short of fantastic, and about to get even better. This is a full phone conversion, and even in its current, slightly precarious state, well worth it.
In either case, you're going to need to choose a ROM, download it, and put it on your phone's SD card. You can select from an expansive list here—for reference, the MyTouch 3G is also known as the Magic 32B—but as far as non-Hero ROMs go, your best bet is the near-legendary, well-supported CyanogenMod. The newest release, out just two days ago, is fully compatible with the G1 and MyTouch. But don't stress too much over which ROM to choose, since changing them over is a breeze now that you're fully unlocked. An overview from Android and Me:
• Power off your phone.
• Boot into recovery mode. Press and hold the Home key, then hit the power button.
• Before you flash a rom file, perform a wipe. Press Alt+W to wipe the data and cache folders. You must wipe when going form different builds of Android.
• Wait for the wipe to finish and the recovery image to display again, then select "apply any zip from sd". Flash the zip file of your choice.
• After flashing any zip you should be able to reboot your system and watch it load to the home screen.
You'll want to read their full rooting and flashing guide for caveats, but that easy little list there is about the size of it.
A few more reasons to root that don't involve totally flashing your phone:
• Full backups to SD cards
• Wi-Fi tethering!
• Autorotation for all apps
• Install apps to an SD card
This alongside a treasure trove of smaller tweaks and tricks you can find at the every-active XDA forums. And of course, it should go without saying: this is potentially risky, and could brick your phone. The rooting process is almost foolproof, but before you jump in, make sure you've got the right hardware (American MyTouch 3Gs and G1s only) and have backed up any important data. Happy hacking!

007 style gadget to be available exclusively from Orange
The LG GD910, a secret agent style watch phone, is to be available at the Orange Shop at Bond Street Station in London for a limited time.
Priced at £500, the phone will go on sale at the shop from August 27th and will also be available on the Orange website from mid-September. Orange is stressing that availability is limited, so online interest must be registered at its website.
Accessible through a touch screen interface, the watch phone features 3G+ connectivity, high-speed data transmission and video call capability using its integrated camera.
It is also capable of performing standard tasks such as texting, audio phone calls and, naturally, keeping the time.

On Tuesday European Commission officials reported that Apple is investigating the reports of exploding iPhones. Apple is claiming that the exploding iPhone issues are isolated and not a general problem.
According to European Commission spokeswoman Helen Kearns
Quote:
Apple have come back to us ... and what they've said to us is that they consider these are isolated incidents. They don't consider that there's a general problem.
An Apple Europe Ltd. spoksman said
Quote:
We are aware of these (media) reports and we are waiting to receive the iPhones from the customers. Until we have the full details, we don't have anything further to add.

Well if you thought that deleting emails on the iPhone meant you were deleting emails you were wrong. A new security bug has revealed that when you delete emails on the iPhone it doesn't delete them, it just makes them slightly harder to read.
Step 1
Delete your email. Remove it from trash. Check the mail server to confirm that the email is gone.
Step 2
Go to Spotlight on your iPhone and search for the subject line of the deleted email.
Step 3
Try to open your deleted email that appears in the Spotlight search results. Your phone will crash.
Step 4
Try again. You'll be surprised to find that your deleted email opens fine.
While this is known to affect POP email accounts on the iPhone it is unclear whether or not it happens with IMAP accounts. Many reports say it does while many others say it doesn't -- probably depends on what IMAP..

Following the first iTunes 9 image leak last week and the Blu-ray support rumor more alleged iTunes 9 images have made their way onto the internet. The images show many new features for iTunes 9.
Facebook integration is an interesting feature which allows you to connect your Facebook to your iTunes. You can create playlists via iTunes and share them on Facebook. They pop up on your wall as iTunes links so all your friends can run out and buy what you like to listen to.
Next is additional device support. Out of all the possibilities for iTunes 9 we believe this one is the least likely. Apple historically does everything in their power to make sure that iTunes is for iPods and iPhones, not other companies devices

Well, looks like the big MS wants a piece of that AppStore development crowd (and who wouldn't). In a recent case study appropriately titled "Porting the Amplitude Application from the iPhone to a Windows Mobile Device – a Case Study," the big MS (actually, through a third party consulting firm) detailed precisely how to port an iPhone app over to Windows Mobile.
It's a solid read with code examples and addresses many questions devs might have.

Microsoft plans to launch the Windows Marketplace for mobile applications in the fall, which in the U.S. means the late-September to late-December time frame. Last week Microsoft began accepting submissions of mobile-phone software applications for the site from registered developers in

It seems the Mame team have stepped into the mix and forced Zodttd to quit with his port of MAME to the Iphone, from what i can gather and dont quote me is that MAME was being sold via the Cydia rep and the MAME Team spotted this and forced it to be took down, hopefully a fully FREE version will appear soon with sourcecode released.
Interesting times, i still wonder if Nintendo will object to a commercial GBA emulator on the Iphone, i suppose the only thing to do is carry on whilst you can.

Dennis] points out that the iPod shuffle and the iPod remote are almost identical visually. He decided to combine the two so he always had his remote with him. He pulled the guts out of a remote and mounted them in a shuffle. The remote functions all of the time, while the shuffle only turns on when you insert headphones. We wonder if he accidentally does stuff on his computer while he’s changing songs.

Well, look at that: The iPhone 3GS 32GB was the best-selling phone in Japan for the month of July, according to a survey being reported by a number of sites, including Electronista and Mainichi Daily News. Not bad for a handset that doesn't even support 1seg TV, huh? Trailing behind the aforementioned handset at number nine (and the only other American model to make the top ten) is a little something called the iPhone 3GS 16GB. Of course, the mobile market in Japan features plenty of virtually identical phones that manufacturers assign different model numbers to, depending on carrier -- so we're going to take this with a grain of salt. But still, we have to wonder what, exactly, to attribute Apple's new found Japanese popularity to. Maybe it's because they got the phone a mere month after the Stateside 3GS launch, while the hype machine was still in motion? Or maybe someone juked the stats? We can't be sure just yet, but we do have the top ten for you -- in handy list form -- after the break.

Pioneering T-Mobile G1 owners have been enjoying the spoils of Android 1.5 (or Cupcake, as it's known 'round these parts) for months now, but it looks as if that very treat will be the last taste of confectionery goodness that the smartphone gets. According to Android software engineer Dave Sparks, a time is soon coming when devs "wont be able to fit the latest [Android] release on the G1's internal flash," and yet another engineer has chimed in via Twitter to say that he "can't promise" that any update after 1.5 will fit. For whatever reason, HTC gifted the G1 with an incredibly meager amount of internal flash, and considering that no Android phone will support app storage / loading from a microSD card, there's no way to free up room for Donut, Eclair or Flan. You've been a real champ, G1, but without 2.0+, we just can't give you the love and devotion you truly need. Go on, call us fickle -- we deserve it.

The iPhone is no stranger to gaping security flaws, but this one's a doozy: You know how when you delete emails, you expect them to be, well, deleted? On iPhone 3.0, that's just not how things work. This is bad.
You can watch the whole insincere deletion process play out above, but here's a handy guide so you can follow along at home. Turn off your device radio and Wi-Fi connection for maximum OH GOD:
1.) Find a message with a memorable subject line, and delete it.
2.) Go to your trash, and remove the message from there.
3.) Check whatever IMAP folders may be listed on your device—this works with POP too—and make sure your message is really not
there.
4.) Flick over to the main Spotlight search screen, and search for the subject line on that message that shouldn't exist
5.) Be shocked and confused when you find that not only can you see the subject line in a simple search—you can still view the entire message. Your email-based illicit affairs are ruined.
I've tested this, and it works. I even restarted my iPod for good measure, and the message was still in the index, and still accessible by search, despite not appearing anywhere in the main Mail interface. As far as I can tell, there is no way to completely delete emails from iPhone OS 3.0, which isn't just strange, it's a disastrous security flaw.
Still, a few things don't really add up here. The video submitter says he can find emails from months ago, but surely this would result in creeping storage consumption, and has to stop sometime. I mean, doesn't it? And even if these messages are just hiding out in some secret folder or something, and can be delete by some obscure method, this isn't how a mail client should behave, at all.
Try this yourselves and see if you can find any clues as to what's going on here: I'm as alarmed as I am stumped.
