Well, how about that -- Palm Developer Community Manager Chuq Von Rospach has taken the time to respond to earlier reports of NaNplayer's rejection from the App Catalog, and he's surprisingly cool about it. As we'd heard, the underlying issue is that NaNplayer uses private APIs that will change in a future version of webOS, so Palm doesn't want apps built on them. That's understandable, but here's where Palm's doing it right: Chuq says that Palm is happy for NaNplayer "to continue life as a homebrew application until we get to the point where we can release public, supportable APIs for the functionality that it requires." That's the sort of hacker-friendly compromise we can get behind -- anyone in Cupertino taking notes?

We still don't know what it looks like or when exactly it'll arrive -- rough estimate sometime in 2010 -- but Windows Mobile 7's being given special care by Microsoft with a chassis concept of "carefully defined hardware specifications" for hardware vendors, according to James McCarthy. As for what those specs are and how strictly it'll enforce adherence, we're still in the dark. If it's anything like what we saw with the rumored "Pink" specs from back in May, we're not too worried, but it's really in Microsoft's hands to screw up. If they say it's okay to see StrongARM chips in WinMo 7 devices, someone'll do it, and we gotta imagine some negative vibes towards the mobile OS in general should someone ever have to manage with a handset like that.

One of the new iPod nano features that Apple didn't bother to illustrate much yesterday is the integrated pedometer, and if an updated Nike+ iPod user guide is to be believed, that ain't the only fitness-related extra that the 5G nano will be good for. As the image above so clearly shows, a Nike+ compatible heart rate monitor could be on the way, and it'll function exclusively with Cupertino's only camera-toting iPod. AppleInsider was told that the product launch was actually scheduled for yesterday, but it was held up for reasons unknown and may not ship until 3058. Too bad -- we just know that you were waiting for this very device to start your workout regimen. Ah well, what's another dozen months of kicking back and ingesting Ho Hos, right?

September 11th, 2009, 17:33 Posted By: wraggster
In a New York Times interview of Steve Jobs conducted by Engadget columnist aspirant David Pogue, Apple's CEO suggested that the company did not include a camera on the iPod touch because the company was now marketing the iPod touch as a game machine and that a camera was not germane to such a device. "We don't need to add new stuff," said Jobs.
But why is adding a digital camera any less germane to the portable game device of the iPod touch than it is to adding it to the media player of the iPod nano? Or, if price is an issue, why not exclude it only on the entry-level model? The iPod touch market will soon be large enough to support such diversity. And if the iPod touch is indeed being marketed as a gaming console and a low-cost point of entry to the app store, excluding a camera disrupts the continuity of the touch/iPhone platform, while the iPod imaging message is now more muddled: If you're buying the iPhone 3G, you can capture stills but not video, while the "lower-end" iPod nano offers video capture but not stills, the iPod touch offers neither, and only the iPhone 3GS offers both.
Since the iPod's introduction, a few media players with integrated cameras have entered (and failed) in the marketplace: the Archos camcorder and Olympus m:Robe. While the camcorder-enabled iPod nano will surely sell orders of magnitude more than those products did, the video camera feels no less tacked on. Quite to the contrary when it comes to portable gaming, Nintendo, the longstanding market share leader in handheld games, added a camera to its DSi, and a rear-facing one at that.
To be fair, an iPod nano with embedded camcorder does enable Apple to market a Flip competitor that is significantly smaller than the Flip mino, with a screen size closer to even bulkier competitors such as the Kodak Zi8 -- although it lacks HD video capture. The candybar camcorder market has been small by iPod standards, but it continues to attract more competitors -- Samsung, for example, recently launched the HMX-U10.
The Jobs interview does offer a potential clue to what was perhaps a more pressing concern in integrating a camera into the touch. Explaining why the nano was limited to recording video and not stills, Jobs mentioned that adding both would have made the nano a significantly thicker device; Apple has consistently pointed with pride at the thinness of its mobile and portable devices.
Particularly with the thin Zune HD (and its OLED screen) entering the fray, Apple is likely loathe to bulk up the incredibly slim iPod touch. I suspect that the protests of users will eventually change Apple's mind; even FM radio has made it into the iPod after all this time. But for the next year, at least, iPod touch users may be condemned to carry a separate digital camera and endure burdens such as optical zoom, image stabilization, and vastly better image quality.

Apparently it was all in good fun, but word is that while whooping up the crowd at Microsoft's company meeting in Seattle this week, Ballmer spotted a Windows staffer snapping his pic with…an iPhone. You know where this is going...
He grabbed it from the employee, made some funny remarks, and held it up as the crowd booed. (You can see the shot taken by the actual iPhone in question at this point). Ballmer then pretended to stomp on it and walked away, with everything being shown on the big screen behind him.
"He is not one of us, kill him!" (OK, I made that part up).
Ballmer also jokingly teased the poor employee during his speech afterward, something I'm sure they won't forget.
What have we learned? Well, Steve Ballmer actually has a sense of humor. And whatever you do, hide your freakin' iPhone when the Ballmer-nator is near. As a Microsoft staffer said on Twitter: "You just don't pick up the CEO of Chevy in a BMW.

Apple has cut the price for iPod touch owners to update their devices' software from version 2.x to 3.x. It now costs $4.95 rather than the previous price of $9.95.
That means iPod touch users who hadn't already upgraded their device to the iPhone 3.0 software will be able to pay the cheaper price to go straight to iPhone 3.1. The upgrade from 3.0 to 3.1 remains free.
Does this really matter? In a word, yes. Earlier this year, Apple faced criticism over its policy of charging iPod touch owners nearly $10 to get the latest software, when the update was free for iPhone owners.
In June, mobile advertising firm AdMob revealed that just 1% of the iPod touch users accessing its ad network had upgraded to the 3.0 software, compared to 44% of iPhone users.
With 20 million iPod touches having been sold, it's in Apple's interests - not to mention app developers' - to get as many of them to upgrade to the latest software as possible. Hence, presumably, this new price cut.

Many Apple fans like myself love the cool games available for the iPhone and iPod.
To a considerable degree, the gaming experience for the Apple product line can hold its own with the lineup available for any competing portable video game handheld maker - even the PSP, in my estimation. In addition to cost effectiveness and appearance, the outright game play for many titles just feels better on my iPhone. And it's impossible to place a value on the convenience factor of "game readiness."
But as analyst Jeff Bakalar pointed out following last night's Apple event, there's still something missing from the iPhone and iPod gaming experience. And it's hard to put your finger on exactly what it is.

As of this morning iPhone 3GS owners can no longer restore to firmwares 3.0 or 3.0.1. This is due to the fact that Apple has stopped signing these files and if you try and restore using one you'll get an error. So this means you should be very very careful until 3.1 is jailbroken because if you mess up your phone... you can only go up to 3.1 as of now. Additionally if you do not have your IBSS and IBEC signatures and you restore, you may never be able to jailbreak again.
iPhone 3G and first generation owners should still be able to restore with no problems.

Every highly-polished stainless steel lining has a cloud, it seems, and today's music player overhaul by Apple has been no different. Amidst all the excitement about moderate improvements and video cameras, we've also had to say goodbye to an old friend. Having been kept around for six months after the release of its successor, the second gen shuffle has finally succumbed, leaving the newly colorful 3G option all on its lonesome in the minimalist music lover space. Ah well, if you really have your heart set on the old rocker, refurb models are still available at Apple's online store, though probably not for long.

Wondering why Apple chose to add a camera to the iPod nano, but not the revised iPod touch? You're not alone, but one Mr. Steven P. Jobs has an answer for you: it's because the touch is a game machine, you see. Seriously -- that's what El Steve told the inimitable David Pogue today after the Rock and Roll event. According to Steve, Apple wasn't "exactly sure how to market the touch" at first, but once they listened to their customers and started to focus on gaming, "it just took off." That certainly explains the "funnest iPod ever" tagline, but still, why no cam? "We don't need to add new stuff -- we need to get the price down to where everyone can afford it." And... that's all he said about it, and Poguey didn't pursue the blindingly obvious followup: that's great for the $199 8GB model, but does Apple really think customers paying $299 and $399 for the larger editions would be turned off by paying slightly more for a camera sensor? Something tell us we won't hear Jobs say one more word about it until he's ready to actually unveil a touch with a camera -- at which point it will be a revolution.
P.S.- Make sure to hit the read link for the full interview -- it's short, but it's full of Steve saying things like "You notice Amazon never says how [many Kindles] they sell; usually if they sell a lot of something, you want to tell everybody."

Palm's App Catalog isn't exactly bursting with titles yet, but that isn't stopping the company from rejecting apps -- and the dubious honor of First App Rejected goes to NaNplayer, a music player app. Apparently NaNPlayer made use of an undocumented webOS API call, so it makes sense that Palm wouldn't approve it, but there's a somewhat less-sensible flipside: it was using the same API the built-in music player uses to index files so it could make playlists. That's pretty basic functionality, so we're hoping this all gets resolved with a future webOS update -- and in the meantime, NaNplayer will be released to the burgeoning Pre homebrew community when it's complete.

I've got a playlist that never fails to make my heart go boom-baboom-baboom just a bit faster. According to a study from the University of Belgrade, 12 minutes of that playlist a day might actually leave me healthier and happier.
Over the course of a seven year study, Dr Predrag Mitrovic of the University of Belgrade looked at the effects of music therapy on the heart. Turns out that happy, joyful music (what qualifies for that is a matter of opinion) might have health benefits due to "decreasing sympathetic nervous activity."
Basically a cheery song or two a day might not keep the doctor away, but it's got some pleasant effects:
Patients who listened to music had less anxiety, although the score did not reach statistical significance, and statistically significant reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressures and heart rate. Patients who listened to music also had significantly less angina, less heart failure, and lower rates of reinfarction, sudden death, and revascularization.
In plain words? Your "happy songs" will leave you calmer and less stressed. Not novel, but it's nice to have some science backing it. So rock, rock your little hearts out and spread the health by sharing your happy playlists.

Steve Jobs has stated in the clearest terms yet that Apple is to market its iPod Touch as a dedicated games device – and considering how the company has so successfully dominated the MP3 and mobile phone markets, the news will surely be met with concern at both Nintendo and Sony.
Jobs also confessed that last night’s price drop for the device positions it directly at the mass-market – a sector that to date Nintendo has courted with great success.
“Originally, we weren't exactly sure how to market the Touch,” Jobs told The New York Times. “Was it an iPhone without the phone? Was it a pocket computer? What happened was, what customers told us was, they started to see it as a game machine.
“We started to market it that way, and it just took off. And now what we really see is it's the lowest-cost way to the App Store, and that's the big draw.
"So what we were focused on is just reducing the price to $199. We don’t need to add new stuff. We need to get the price down where everyone can afford it.”

As well as claiming the lead over Nintendo and Sony in the handheld games race today, Apple also cut the prices of its iPod Touch devices, saying the move will drive App sales.
Calling the iPod Touch "the most affordable gateway to the App Store," Apple marketing VP Phil Schiller said that the device would now be at the 'magic price point' of $199 in the US.
That's for an 8GB model - there'll be a 32GB model for $299, and a new 64GB model for $399.
The two higher-price models will have faster processors and OpenGL ES 2.0m aking them "50 per cent faster at nearly everything you do" said Schiller. The move also brings the iPod Touch family into line with the iPhone 3GS.
He said that the firm "learned something really important a few years back in the iPod business" referring back to the iPod mini - its sales doubled when it dropped to $199.
Apple is expecting the same to happen with the the device now it is cheaper - and that this in turn will drive sales of apps, including games, on its App Store.

Buying experience for DS and PSP is poor says marketing boss
The competition between iPhone, PSP and DS is hotting up - Apple used its iPod showcase event today to highlight its position in comparison to other handheld games platforms.
Specifically, the firm moved to crticise the buying experience for the DS and PSP in comparison to the iPhone and iPod Touch.
"When [DS and PSP] came out, they seemed so cool. But once you play a game on the iPod touch, you think 'hey, these things aren't so cool any more..." said Apple's marketing VP Phil Schiller.
"We're talking about 25, 30, 40 dollars a title. The kids can't afford those titles. Worse isn't the price, it's the buying experience."
A demo slide at the event compared the quantity of games on the platforms: PSP's 607 games, DS' 3,680 and then iPod touch's 21,178, before kicking into a video montage of App Store games.
