It might be about four months late, but the UK is finally getting its slice of the tasty new Palm pie. There'll be no shortage of outlets to buy this from, with the Carphone Warehouse, Phones4U and O2's online shop all stocked up, but the carrier options are limited to just one. You'll find tables of UK and Ireland pricing after the break, and you'll be happy to know that the Pre can be had for free on two-year contracts charging ÂŁ34.26 per month, which come with "unlimited" mobile data and free access to the BT OpenZone WiFi service.

Market research firm Interpret recently made some discoveries about public perception of smartphones that should shock, surprise, and amaze you. The just released report, dubbed "Signature Smartphones: Gaining Mindshare in Order to Gain Market Share," reveals that despite being massively disadvantaged in the marketplace, Palm managed to nab a huge chunk of mindshare with the Pre -- in fact, the report suggests that the Pre is number two only to the iPhone 3GS in the metric. The study looks at the driving factors behind purchaser's decisions to buy a smartphone, narrowing down the list to three major components: belief that the phone is "smart," belief that the phone is "hip / cool," and belief that the phone will make them more productive. Rating a swath of phones (BlackBerry Curve and Storm, G1, iPhone), the report found that only the iPhone and Pre balanced the three factors in a way in which consumers felt the higher price tags were warranted. More to the point, only the Pre and the iPhone 3GS managed to strike that balance at all; offerings such as the two BlackBerrys were lopsided. There's not much more meat to the study, though it does shed some interesting light on just how Palm managed to squeeze its way back into the limelight (of course, it doesn't hurt to have a product that's actually kind of cool).

A product that exists only as a persistent rumor has already generated a lot of buzz, according to a new survey done by an international corporate and investment bank.
RBC Capital Markets talked to 3,100 people, and more than a fifth - or 20% - said they would be interested in the hypothetical Apple device, as reported by AppleInsider. By comparison, only 9 percent said they'd be interested in an iPhone when RBC conducted a similar survey a few months before its release in 2007. Remember that at that point more was known about the iPhone, which was an announced product, than is now known about the Apple tablet, which is imaginary. Also, the survey asked about a tablet in the $500 - $700 price range, which is quite a bit...

Good news for Pre owners—Palm has literally been overwhelmed with app submissions on the heels of tomorrow's launch. As Palm Developer Community Manager Chuq Von Rospach notes, the approval process has got off to a rocky start:
We got more applications than we could handle well, which is a good problem to have. Unfortunately, it means we dropped some things on the floor, and that's bad, but with the impending "stuff" that's coming, this is all going to get a lot easier for everyone and a lot more transparent.
Despite these bumps in the road for developers, it does give consumers a reason to be excited about the apps that arrive tomorrow.

The USB Implementers Forum has finally responded to Palm's complaints that Apple is violating its USB-IF Membership Agreement by preventing the Pre from syncing with iTunes. It's found in favor of Apple. Worse, it's accused Palm itself of violating the Membership Agreement by using Apple's Vendor ID number to disguise the Pre as an Apple device

Facing an avalanche of customer complaints about poor battery life in iPhones that are running the 3.1 firmware release, Apple Support has sent a selected group of users a profile enabling a power-logging mode, and has disseminated an 11-item questionnaire, including questions about email use as well as the frequency with which WiFi and Bluetooth are enabled.
The Battery Life Logging mode apparently writes to the user area of the phone's flash, as the test users are instructed not to sync for a few days while gathering data. They are also asked to disable the mode once the testing is complete, presumably to avoid flash overrun due to the growth of the log files.

Apple's support forums are humming with reports of iPhones gone non-responsive after their owners upgraded to version 3.1 of the firmware, and users are growing increasingly restive at Apple's steadfast denial that any bug exists. When the error occurs, the iPhone isplay appears to be functional, but does not react to any input on the touch screen or external buttons, and needs a hard power cycle and reboot before it will work again. The problem - dubbed "Coma Mode" for the phone's complete lack of interactivity when it gets in this state - has been noted sometimes when the phone has been put to sleep, sometimes when it's locked, and sometimes at completely random moments.

What's wrong with Nokia in the US? Why does a company with around 40 per cent of the market elsewhere in the world struggle so hopelessly in the home of capitalism?
The market analyst Frost & Sullivan has its ideas, which it outlined in an essay entitled 'What Nokia Should Do', penned by the firm's mobile and wireless VP J. Gerry Purdy.
He blamed Nokia's poor performance in the US market on design principles. he said:
"Nokia phones all use the same font on the display – the same font used in marketing literature. I don’t know why but the font is not attractive to many people in the US. It gives you an uncomfortable feel when you look at it without necessarily knowing why.
"The Symbian OS, while very good technically, has a user interface style that seems foreign to those in the US. Its core design principles have a look and feel that is different from the iPhone, BlackBerry, Palm WebOS and Android environments."
Purdy's article was then posted to the MoMo industry group, where it was picked apart by various MoMo members including Simon Rockman, the former Sony Ericsson and Moto man turned industry consultant.
He retorted: "Nokia is the only major handset manufacturer that doesn't drop its pants in price negotiations with the US carriers. That's the real story behind their market share. They keep their prices up in Europe because is there is consumer pull. The strategy fails in the US because the consumer has so little choice."
It's a fascinating debate on the cultural and economic differences between the US and Europe,

[Tim] wanted to make some recordings of himself driving similar to those made by the dashboard cameras on police cars. In a simple two step hack (1. Measure, 2. Drill), he altered his iPhone windshield mount so that it didn’t block the lens of the camera. We will admit (sheepishly) that at first glance we thought this might be connected to the outside of the windshield but it’s not. Take a look at his drive to work after the break.
