Novell has announced MonoTouch 1.0, a commercial SDK that allows developers to build iPhone apps using Microsoft's .Net Framework instead of the Apple-designated C or Objective-C languages. The SDK leverages Novell's Mono runtime for running Windows apps on non-Windows systems, allowing developers to utilize code and libraries written for .Net and programming languages like C#. With MonoTouch, the Mono runtime provides such developer services as garbage collection, thread management, type safety, and Web services, said Mono leader Miguel de Icaza

Recombu.com has pitted the iPod Nano's video capabilities against an iPhone 3GS, a Nokia 5530 XpressMusic and Flip Mino HD. This simple test shows how the camera deals with motion, colour and audio. The iPod Nano's camera seems to offer a basic yet decent video experience and some might say delivers a higher picture quality than the iPhone 3GS's camera. What's interesting is how well it deals with close-ups.

Just submitted to Apple as a bug, rpetrich (developer of the ActionMenu packages in Cydia) discovered an interesting security bug in the iPhone firmware.
If a password is inputted in a field, shake to undo, and you will be able to see the character you are deleting. Simply repeat this for every character, and you have the password.
Obviously this isn't an issue that would be useful for those with a criminal bent, as you'd have to be within grabbing distance of someone who input their password, DIDN'T navigate off the page, and then left their iPhone... but a security bug none-the-less. EDIT: rpetrich lets us know, this also works in any apps that save passwords (such as most Twitter apps) - making this bug much more severe.
EDIT AGAIN: This seems to have been fixed in FW 3.1. Which is NOT a good enough reason to upgrade yet, heh

We know that Palm's hard at work implementing desperately needed payment infrastructure for its App Catalog, and we might now be getting some of the first glances of what it -- and the non-beta App Catalog as a whole -- will look like. Major new features include the aforementioned support for credit card payments, some sort of tag cloud that appears to show up when searching, and integrated app management, while many other screens have been gently tweaked from the early release Pre owners are using today. Last we'd heard, Palm had been targeting mid-September for e-commerce to make its grand debut, which is like... now, so we're thinking we won't be waiting long to see this out and about.

The newest iPhone 3.1 update intentionally removed tethering functionality from all phones operating in networks that are not Apple partners. This is not limited to hacked or jailbroken phones, but also includes expensive "officially supported" factory unlocked phones. To make the problem worse Apple has made it impossible to downgrade back to working 3.0 version for iPhone 3GS phones

Summeli is also working on porting the Playstation emulator PSX4all to the Symbian range of phones, heres his announcment:
I’m currently porting gpSP to the Symbian. Psx4all uses pretty much same SDL stuff and same ARM assembly emitter as gpSP. I just took my porting tricks from gpSP and compiled them with psx4all and here is the result. It’s really not fully optimized yet, but you’ll get the idea that it’s not going to run on N95 smoothly I still have some other tricks that would speed it up, but not enough.
It’s just a proof of concept that this emu could be ported to Symbian with moderate effort, but it’s going to require a lot faster CPU. I might take a second look of this after I’ll get the gpSP port finished.
See the performance by yourself.

Apple added an anti-phishing feature to Safari in the 3.1 release. Called Fraud Warning (it's in Settings->Safari->Security), the modification was released with little fanfare (or explanation), and it appears that there may be confusion about how it works.
Computerworld reported on two anti-malware researchers who had taken a look at users who had implemented the feature and found it gave inconsistent results with known malicious sites. On Wednesday, Michael Sutton, the vice president of security research at Zscaler told Computerworld "[i]t was blocking nothing." On Thursday, he said, "it started blocking some sites, for some users, but it was inconsistent. Some sites are being blocked, others are not."

A mysterious discovery has been unearthed inside the new iPod Touch.
According to the San Franciso Chronicle, a Broadcom Wi-Fi chip was discovered during the dissection of the new 32GB iPod Touch by the makers of iFixit, a Web site founded six years ago to help people "tinker with their electronics."
The full list of discoveries was chronicled earlier in our forums.

It's been quite a while since Apple released the OS 3.1 for iPhone and there's been a lot of confusion regarding it's Jailbreak Status etc. Therefore, here's a summary of do's and dont's
According to ChronicDev, that the 3.1 GM seed is still vulnerable.
It has been confirmed by MuscleNerd from DevTeam that iTunes 9 doesn't interfere with jailbreaking so you can update iTunes but make sure that you do not update your device firmware to 3.1 yet if you want to jailbreak.
Saurik confirms once you update to 3.1, there's no way to downgrade to an earlier version as iTunes no longer signs the older firmware. Therefore, if you do not have your ECID information saved, you're completely stuck! For those who have the information saved, there should be a solution out soon
The new firmware also includes a new baseband which means none of the current unlocking tools

September 12th, 2009, 22:27 Posted By: wraggster
iFixIt has discovered a Broadcom 802.11a/b/g/n chip in the just-announced iPod touch (32 GB and 64 GB) models that uses single-stream 802.11n. Single-stream doesn't get the full power of N, but it boosts speed enough that — along with space-time block encoding, a feature coming soon to Wi-Fi access points with two or more radios — the iPod touch could be an effective networked media server, for streaming and transfer, possibly through the new iTunes Home Sharing feature

There's no denying that Apple let the entire world (yes, even the native Easter Islanders) down by not shoving a camera of some sort into its iPod touch, but if a delicate teardown completed by the screwdriver-wielding fiends over at iFixit is any indication, a seasoned modder could certainly add one. A 6- x 6- x 3-millimeter space was spotted between a Broadcom chip and the wireless antenna, which is reportedly not enough room for an iPhone-esque sensor, but just enough space for the video camera module found in the 5G iPod nano. In potentially more interesting news, the aforesaid Broadcom BCM4329 chip actually supports 802.11n. For the nerds in attendance, you'll recognize that even the iPhone 3GS can't handle those high-speed airwaves. Furthermore, the chip supports FM transmission, so at least theoretically, the device could stream tunes to your old school stereo through an open FM station. Eager for more?

[Linux4Nano] over at the [Gna! repositories] have just finalized a breakthrough for their bootloader project. Because the iPod Nano 2G has a hardware encryption chip, it could previously not be flashed with a custom firmware. By digging around in some assembly code (and working their magic) the team was able to get Linux onto the 2G, develop drivers for its peripherals (screen, clickwheel and serial interface are a few), and put all of that code into a package convenient to install by the end user. If you’ve ever considered installing uClinux (the ported distro) on your Nano, the [Linux4Nano] team have made the iLoader an easy place to start.

Noticing a "Policy Requirement" error when trying to use your Microsoft Exchange account after upgrading to OS 3.1? Then there's a good chance you're not using an iPhone 3GS, as Apple has just confirmed via a support page that the upgrade can now enforce the Exchange ActiveSync mailbox policy requiring encryption on the device, which just so happens to only be supported by the 3GS (guess that "S" stands for more than just speed). Not surprisingly, the only solution for non-3GS users is to contact their Exchange Server administrator and hope that they're willing to change the policy to no longer require device encryption.
