Today Nokia has finally officially presented the rumoured Nokia N900. It runs the Linux-based Maemo 5 platform known from Internet Tablets (the 770, N800 and N810), but for the first time the N900 is not just a "tablet" but a fully functional smartphone with GSM radio and HSDPA connectivity (in addition to WiFi b/g, USB 2.0 Highspeed and Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR with A2DP and AVRCP). It is also the most powerful mobile device from Nokia released up to date, including the ARM Cortex-A8 (OMAP3430) processor @ 600 MHz with PowerVR SGX and OpenGL 2.0 (the same as used in the Omnia HD and the iPhone 3G S), 256 MB operating memory (and 768 MB of virtual memory, i.e. 1 GB in total), 32 GB storage memory and microSD card slot, 5 Megapixel (2576 x 1936) Carl Zeiss camera with 848 x 480 pixel / 25 fps video recording, FM transmitter, Assisted GPS receiver (with Nokia Maps), 3D accelerometer, 3.5 mm audio jack and TV Out, and 3.5" 800x480 pixel touch sensitive (resistive) display. The N900 also has a three row hardware QWERTY keyboard and a kick stand. It measures 110.9 x 59.8 x 18 mm and weighs 181 g.
Software features include: Maemo 5 platform, Mozilla powered web browser with Flash 9.4 and Ajax support, customizable "Panorama Desktop", multiwindow task switcher, Nokia Messaging with push and HTML support, Skype client, video playback (H.264, MPEG-4, XviD, WMV, Flash) at 25-30 fps, audio playback (MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, M4A, WAV, WMA), video recording (848 x 480 / 25 fps), and more.
The N900 will be demoed and more details about the device and the Maemo 5 platform will be presented next week at the Nokia World event in Stuttgart. N900 will start shipping in October at €500 before taxes.
Stay tuned for more information as it comes, as well as detailed review of this fantastic device as soon as we get it. New, separate My-Maemo.com website is also in preparation.

This one caught us by surprise, but it comes from a source that has always been 100% reliable: Not only Apple may be working on a 10-inch tablet, but also in 13" and 15" models, one running Mac OS X.
This source claims that the two touchscreen prototypes—made of aluminum, but on the shape of big iPhones—were in a factory in Shenzuen, China. One of them "was running Mac OS X 10.5." When I asked, the source didn't know if these were built for demonstration purposes, or if they were preproduction units. The company has a tight relation with Apple but "it's not FoxConn."
As I said before, with everyone focused on the 10-inch tablet with iPhone OS, this sighting is quite surprising. It is possible that Apple may be just exploring other form factors, and these two models may or may not end being future products.

Reports of iPhones exploding, starting fires and killing people in cold blood have been around since the inception of the handset. They've also been relatively sporadic, seemingly short on evidence, and Apple hasn't given complaints much credence or response. So when we heard a story from France the other day about a security guard's iPhone "exploding" and sending a shard of glass into his eye (though apparently not serious enough to warrant a hospital visit), it was a little hard to believe, but with a few other stories of cracking screens due to overheating cropping up in Europe over the past couple weeks, French authorities have taken an interest in the story. Anecdotally, a teen says his phone "imploded" in Belgium and gave him a headache, a woman's phone cracked without warning, and ten or so victims in France have come forward to complain of similar problems, picking up the interest of a French consumer watchdog group. Apple is naturally not new to the concept of overheating in its battery-powered devices -- in fact, it's just entered into its first full-on iPod nano recall in Korea of the 1st-gen players after numerous reports of battery faultiness worldwide -- but with 26 million iPhones out and about, and the iPhone 3GS tending to run a bit hotter than its siblings, a systemic problem with one or all models of the handsets isn't something consumers or Apple would take lightly.
Herve Novelli, France's top trade official, met with Apple France's Michel Coulomb today to discuss the problem, and so far Apple is sticking to its guns: it claims that reported incidents are in the single digits, and that all cases it's investigated fully so far have turned out to be blamed on "external force" to the screen. Herve and Michel seem to have parted on friendly terms, promising to keep in touch over the issue, and the EU's alert system for dangerous consumer products (inexplicably dubbed RAPEX) is staying in the loop as well, asking the 27 member nations to keep tabs on the situation. Novelli says it's "too early to blame anyone," and we'd have to agree, but we hope Apple keeps up the (freshly) open communication about this issue going forward.

As more cases of iPhone screen explosions emerge in the news on this side of the pond, Apple is now facing official inquiries and lawsuits in France. This situation has forced Apple finally to break silence and acknowledge the incidents: 'We are aware of these reports and we are waiting to receive the iPhones from the customers. Until we have the full details, we don't have anything further to add.' Following those reports, the European Commission had already decided last week to step in, while Apple tried to dismiss the problem as 'isolated incidents.' Meanwhile, iPhone explosion-related sites are now popping up on the Internet, releasing games such as iPop to chill out and relax on the subject, but also giving users advice on preventing iPhone accidents, or detecting imminent explosions.

You can spend a lot of money on a handbag, so why not get one that's functional? These co-Mobile Speakers designed by Japanese artist Yoshihiko Satoh are not just styled to look like a bag, they are a bag, sporting room for your iPod to serve tunes and maybe a bento box to serve lunch -- but admittedly not much else. They're available in dark wood or maple and will set you back ¥31,500; about $335. Sure, that's not cheap for a 30 watt speaker dock, but we've seen far more expensive purses that are far less tastefully designed.

It's been just a little over a month since Apple blocked iTunes sync with Palm Pre, and now Apple takes that strategy one step further by blocking Snow Leopard sync with Palm-OS powered smartphones. Even though Palm has officially retired Palm OS and is now focusing hard on its next-generation WebOS in the Palm Pre, the company is still selling Palm OS-powered smartphones; two current models are the Treo Pro on Sprint and the Centro.

Operator celebrating Bank Holiday weekend by scrapping its data charges.
Vodafone UK has announced that it's axing its usual 50p flat-rate day charge for mobile data for tomorrow only, as a promotion to celebrate the August Bank Holiday weekend.
It's the second time Voda has made mobile internet access free for a day.
The deal is open to the operator's pay-as-you-go customers, as well as those who don't already have a data tariff as part of their monthly subscription. Customers don't have to register to take advantage, either.
This isn't an excuse for customers to spend all day streaming videos or downloading music, mind.
What's 'free' tomorrow is 25MB of data, which Vodafone handily breaks down as watching three three-minute YouTube clips, reading eight news stories on the BBC's site, reading and replying to 40 emails, or viewing 200 mobile web pages.
The fact that this is the second such promotion implies that first time round, it was successful in persuading some customers to sign up for a data plan afterwards.

With Tea Vui Huang's freeware (Java MIDP) DNG Phone Camera you can capture photos directly to the DNG (Adobe Digital Negative) RAW image format. Resolution is limited to VGA, but if it is sufficient (e.g. for web use) DNG format may deliver you much better quality than the default JPEG as all postprocessing (e.g. sharpening, white balance adjustment, exposure, final compression) takes place on PC in DNG format compatible software.

Program sends incoming and outgoing sms from mobile phone where it is installed to your number silently. All messages would be sent in hidden mode (application is not shown in phone menu, do not keep copies of sms in sent and reports folders and do not shown in Task List) which is can be useful if you do not want your child (or another person) to know that you read his/her messages.

August 26th, 2009, 22:04 Posted By: wraggster
French consumer groups are investigating reports of iPhones that explode or crack spontaneously.
An 80-year-old from the Paris suburbs was among eight people who said their phones' screens were affected, according to the AFP news agency.
Consumers in the UK, Holland and Sweden have reported similar problems, prompting an earlier EU investigation.
Apple said it was aware of the reports and was waiting to receive the handsets from the affected customers.
The firm has been accused of trying to hush-up cases of iPhones and iPods heating up or bursting into flames in the US and the UK.
Ken Stanborough and his daughter, from Liverpool, have accused the firm of trying to silence them with a gagging order after the child's iPod exploded and the family sought a refund.
Apple reportedly offered to pay the money to Mr Stanborough, but only if he kept the terms of the settlement confidential.
It has been reported that the device's lithium ion batteries could be the source of the problem.
European alert
In the latest case, Rolland Caufman, a pensioner from a Paris suburb, said his iPhone screen had broken up without explanation in July, the week after he bought it.
"I took it out of my pocket and held it to my ear and saw the screen crack up like a car windscreen," he told AFP.
We are waiting to receive the iPhones from the customers
Alan Hely, Apple
Mr Caufman has since been issued a replacement phone.
However, there have been other, similar reports.
On Tuesday, a 26-year-old security guard claimed he was hit in the eye with a glass shard when his Iphone screen cracked up.
He has said he would seek a full refund and file suit for damages.
The incidents have prompted investigations by French consumer affairs groups.
"An investigation is under way. We have been alerted to the problem and we are looking into it closely," said a spokesman from watchdog DGCCRF.
The European Commission has also asked the 27 EU nations to keep it informed of any problems, under its Rapex scheme.
Rapex is the EU rapid alert system for dangerous consumer products.
The system issue alerts for multiple products every week, sometimes leading to mass product recalls, but often with no consequence.
Apple, which has sold 26 million iPhones and 200 million iPods to date, said it was aware of the reports.
"We are waiting to receive the iPhones from the customers," said Alan Hely, head of European Communications for Apple.
"Until we have the full details, we don't have anything further to add."
