Recent days have seen intense speculation around mobile games publisher Gameloft's support for Android, sparked by negative comments made by the company's CFO. Something that hasn't been talked about, though, is how Gameloft's fiercest rival sees Android. Has EA Mobile thrown its weight behind the platform?
In a word: no.
Comprehensive Android app directory AndroLib lists just two EA Mobile games on Android Market: The Sims 3 and Bejeweled.
Meanwhile, the smartphone section of EA Mobile's own website only lists one Android phone – the venerable T-Mobile G1 – and just one game for it.
By contrast, the site says EA has 66 games available for the BlackBerry Pearl 8100, and 29 games for the WinMo-sporting Samsung i760.
Sister site ME contacted EA Mobile to get its views on Android, and while the publisher declined to respond directly, it did supply a 'recent quote' from its VP of worldwide publishing Adam Sussman:
"We look for Google’s Android platform to become an important channel for EA Mobile and we have already launched some of EA Mobile’s most popular franchises on Android including Bejeweled and The Sims 3 with more to come, including Surviving High School, Spore Origins and many others."
EA is hardly wary of new mobile platforms, having supported N-Gage, ploughed resources into iPhone, and recently took the stage at BlackBerry's developer conference to showcase its plans for OpenGL 3D games on RIM's handsets.
The picture that is emerging, then, is that the two biggest mobile games publishers in the world are still decidedly wary of Android - with EA even resisting the urge (so far) to simply port across its existing Java game catalogue.
Concern about Android's handset and OS-version fragmentation? Dissatisfaction with the performance of paid apps on Android Market? Waiting for handsets like the Droid to sell in their millions before committing resources?
The reasons are unclear, but it seems Google has work to do to make Android a serious mobile gaming platform.

News via http://www.zodttd.com/wp/2009/11/psx...sphone-status/
Quick status report for psx4iphone and gpSPhone coming right at cha!
psx4iphone v1.0.0 currently does not work on any device with firmware greater than 3.0. I have a build that now works with newer firmwares and will be releasing it shortly. Hopefully tomorrow, but don’t hold me to it.
gpSPhone currently works with all 2.x and 3.x firmwares on all devices. But there’s a catch. DevTeam messed up a kernel patch in the latest 3.1.x jailbreaks (confirmed by saurik) that affects only the iPhone 3g. If you have an iPhone 3g and use 3.1.x jailbroken with pwnagetool, there’s a fix for gpSPhone (as well as the upcoming psx4iphone). Simply run blackra1n on your current iPhone 3g firmware. It won’t erase anything or do any harm. It will however fix the issue at hand, and allow gpSPhone and the next psx4iphone to run.
Thanks,
ZodTTD

Recently we covered an article about the new iPhone worm that has been going around which affects users with OpenSSH installed and have not changed the default password. It started off innocent and escalated to something more threatening.
While there is of course the ability to change your password, some of you might not be so lucky and worms could be crawling your iPhone. Do not fret, as today I bring you some options for cleaning your iPhone. While not all of these options will bring you success, at least you'll know what your options are.

Tesco Mobile, which piggy backs the O2 network, is taking pre-orders for iPhone 3G and 3GS having confirmed in a short statement that it is to offer the handset.
Pricing details are not available just yet, but Tesco Mobile offers both contracts and PAYG tariffs.
The news takes the number of UK operators either offering or confirmed to offer the iPhone to four, with the others being O2, Orange and Vodafone (from early 2010).

Considering the proliferation of 3G, WiFi, in-home broadband, and front-facing cameras on phones, you'd think that there'd be far more obvious ways to bridge video calls between phones and PCs -- but alas, it's virtually impossible, particularly in the States where carriers have a complete aversion to the topic. Enter Fring -- one of the mobile industry's VoIP pioneers that has spread its love from Symbian to almost every smartphone platform worth mentioning over the years -- which is stepping out today with a new build for S60 handsets that offers video support through Skype. The way we see it, this is great news for a couple of reasons: one, Skype is one of the few videoconferencing systems with widespread traction, and two, this suddenly makes front-facing cams useful to a whole swath of Nokia users on networks (ahem, AT&T and T-Mobile) that don't offer video calling themselves. Whether we actually use it is another story altogether, but hey, it's cool to have it if we absolutely must see your beautiful face right now in stunning low fidelity. Follow the break for a video demo.

UK law firm Olswang has published its 2009 Convergence Survey - a study of how people are using devices to access digital content.
The headline finding is that iPhone users are unsurprisingly heavy users of digital content - but interestingly are also more willing than other consumer groups to pay for that content.
19% of iPhone users surveyed said they access on-demand TV on their handsets, and 37% said they want to do so in the future. 41% said they are willing to pay (via micropayments or a subscription) for catch-up TV shows.
They were also asked about films, with 73% of iPhone users saying they'd pay to watch a film that's just been released in cinemas on their iPhone. However, only 30% said they would pay for newspaper articles or columns.
"Having discovered the habit and simplicity of paying for apps and other services on the iPhone, it would seem that iPhone owners are also more willing to pay for content of many types than the general online population," says Olswang partner Matthew Phillips.
"To maximise their revenue opportunities in the digital environment, companies need to build payment solutions into consumer propositions on other platforms that are as easy to use as that on the iPhone."

Go figure, right? You get a relatively hot phone out onto more carriers, and just like that, sales increase. It ain't rocket science, buster. As AT&T grins happily while enjoying a death grip on Apple's cash cow here in the States, things are a lot more wide open for consumers across the pond. In both France and the UK, the iPhone has been given the all-clear to be sold on multiple carriers, and according to research from Bernstein, the "widening of the distribution has boosted Apple's value market share to 32 percent in the latest quarter from 21 percent just three months earlier." The notes also mention that Apple's increase is coming at the expense of RIM, with over 600,000 iPhone handsets being sold during Q3 2009 in France alone. The point to all this madness? Oh, not much -- just to tell Sir Jobs that he can count on quite a bit more dough should he decide to sell this elusive "iPhone" device on Verizon in the US of A.

When it comes to nerd obsessions, the only thing that can trump a fictional tablet developed by battling left-coast legends is the promise of a revolutionary OS from Google that relies upon nothing but a browser and the dreams of a young Larry Ellison. Don't even start with your Korean product waifs as we're trying to keep the discussion in the realm of possibilities. Now, with the weekend over, you've probably experienced the same sense of ennui we've all felt at having downloaded and tested a copy of Chrome OS. To be fair, that meh-ness is kind of what you'd expect from a browser-based OS that's meant to get out of your way. Still, it's hard not to wonder where Android and its growing application base fits into Google's long-term OS strategy especially after seeing several ARM-based smartbook prototypes running Google's smartphone OS. Fortunately, Google co-founder Sergey Brin shed some light on this topic in a candid statement following the Chrome OS event. According to CNET, Brin said that Android and the Chrome OS "will likely converge over time," noting the common Webkit and Linux foundation of both operating systems. It's unclear when this might occur however. In fact, listening to Google CEO Eric Schmidt attempt to explain the difference between Google's operating systems in a recent CNET interview leaves us wondering if Google has a clear idea of its target markets as smartphone and laptop functionality continues to converge across devices. Schmidt concedes that it's too early to tell how the OSes will be used and prefers not to "prejudge the success" of each. "The future will unfold as it does," he says, and the open-source community will determine the natural fit. Check the interview after the break -- the Android vs. Chrome OS waffling begins at the 16:30 remaining mark of the 19 minute and 11 second interview.

If you like your software homebrewed with just a hint of alpha then boy do we have an app for you. The WebOS homebrew community just released Precorder; an app that lets your Palm Pre record audio and 30fps 480x320 pixel video in H.264/AVC format -- you can can even control the built-in LED for recording in low-light situations. Unfortunately, there's no video preview presented while recording but hey, it's alpha software bro... and it's free. Check a video sample after the break.

One of the biggest pet peeves I have with Cydia is the constant refreshing that takes place. Not only does the app want to refresh after opening, it seems to also want to do a full refresh every time you add a source, or install a new app.
On my 3G, I probably spend over a minute just waiting to launch Cydia for the first time. Let alone the additional wait time if I am adding a source or new app.
Now, I'm sure this auto-refreshing is there for a good reason. However, sometimes It's just not necessary to do a full refresh. Until now, I had always wished there was a way to toggle this on and off.
Well now there is. iSpazio has released a toggle for SBSettings that will enable or disable the Auto-Refreshing performed in Cydia. This speeds up Cydia ten fold.

China Unicom has great expectations for the iPhone despite lackluster sales, projecting that the device will represent 10 percent of all 3G phones in the People's Republic within two to three years. The chairman of China's second-largest wireless carrier also said that he expects the iPhone to be the top-selling smartphone in the burgeoning Chinese market.
In spite of intense interest in the initial offering of a legitimate iPhone after years of black-market devices trickling in from Hong Kong and abroad, China Unicom only gained 5,000 new subscriber since the device was released in October. However, the company is reportedly pleased with the sales and is claiming that the October launch of its world-standard WCDMA 3G network was also a success, with over a million new subscribers added each month.
Apple is also in talks with Unicom's competitor China Mobile, the world's largest wireless carrier with 475 million subscribers as compared with 141 million for China Unicom...

There's a new worm on the radar. And, this time, it's a bit more nefarious than anything Rick Astley could have ever imagined himself.

The worm is the first malicious infestation to hit the iPhone, the first merely displaying a picture of 1980's crooner Rick Astley - although music lovers might claim that was pretty malicious as well.
According to a boatload of media outlets covering the news today, a second worm to hit the iPhone has been detected by security company F-Secure

But October ad requests stats not so good for BlackBerry, Symbian and WinMo
Android is on the charge when it comes to mobile internet and application usage, judging by AdMob’s just-released October Mobile Metrics Report.
Google’s OS took an 11% share of worldwide smartphone ad requests on AdMob’s network in October – up from 3% in April. In the US, it’s risen from 7% of requests to 20% in the same time period.
What’s more, Motorola’s Droid looks set to continue that growth. Just two weeks after its launch on 6th November, AdMob says it accounted for 24% of all its Android ad requests.
Globally, iPhone also increased its share of ad requests on AdMob’s network in the last six months, moving from 43% in April to 50% in October. The big loser was Symbian, which went from 36% to 25% in the same time period.
However, Research In Motion may have cause for concern. Its global market share of AdMob requests declined from 9% to 7% between April and October – but in its biggest market, the US, that share went from 17% to 12%.
Windows Mobile is also on the slide, with its global share shrinking from 5% in April to just 3% in October. Meanwhile, Palm’s webOS – represented in October by the recently-launched Palm Pre smartphone – took a 2% share that month.

South Korean operator KT will begin selling the iPhone on 28th November - the first time Apple's handset has been officially available in the country.
KT will be selling the 32GB and 16GB iPhone 3GS models, as well as the 8GB iPhone 3G. Customers signing up to a 24-month contract will be able to get the top-end model for 132,000 Won (around $114).
Bloomberg suggests that sales of smartphones are expected to reach 800,000 units in South Korea this year, with Samsung, LG and Pantech accounting for 90% of sales.
KT will be hoping its iPhone deal helps it gain ground on larger rival SK Telecom, although with Apple having shifted to a policy of working with multiple carriers in each country, it's quite possible SKT will also be selling the iPhone soon.
Korean mobile content firms are already active on iPhone. For example, games publishers Gamevil and Com2uS have released a succession of popular games in the West.

Google has not been very good to entice customers to actually buy products,’ claims finance director
Leading mobile game developer Gameloft will significantly decrease investment in Android supported games.
The Paris-headquartered mobile game developer went on to claim that – unlike Apple’s iPhone – no company is making significant money from Google’s mobile platform.
“We are selling 400 times more games on iPhone than on Android,” said Gameloft finance director Alexandre de Rochefort.
Speaking at a company investor conference, de Rochefort said: "We have significantly cut our investment in Android platform, just like many others.”
Gameloft’s move will place further doubt on the financial incentive for Android game development, with the announcement made days after RIM's director of developer relations Mike Kirkup told Develop that few are buying Android apps.
de Rochefort went on to list the perceived weakness of Android's application store.
“It is not as neatly done as on the iPhone,” he said, as quoted in a Reuters report.
“Google has not been very good to entice customers to actually buy products. On Android nobody is making significant revenue.”
Google’s Android platform is used by numerous smartphone manufacturers – such as Motorola and Sony Ericsson – due to its flexibility and potential for appealing design. The open platform is widely considered as the leading alternative to Apple’s iPhone OS, though the impact of Gameloft’s abandonment remains to be seen.
Nearly fifteen percent of Gameloft’s revenues come via App Store purchases.

9to5Mac has picked up on reports this morning that the elusive iPod Touch with a built-in video camera may ship as early as this spring. While some (like myself) are saying they'll only believe it when they see it, even if we do "see it," will we want to if the rumor is true? Here's what I mean:
Quote:
“The iPod touch 3G with camera will allegedly have the same camera as the updated iPod nano, which shoots video, but not still pictures. Although the video quality on the nano is good for a portable device, it can't compare with the video quality of the iPhone

According to a story in Computerworld, plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Apple going back to October 2007 asked the judge on Wednesday to order the company to release the source code to iPhone firmware update 1.1.1. The plaintiffs claim that the update was specifically designed to "brick," or render inoperable, any iPhone that had been unlocked.
The lawsuit alleges that Apple and AT&T violated state and federal antitrust laws by entering into a multi-year exclusive contract naming AT&T as the sole carrier in the United States, and preventing users from being able to unlock their phones

After the ikee worm that displayed a picture of Rick Astley on jailbroken iPhones, the first malicious iPhone worm (Google translation; original, in Dutch) has now been discovered in the wild. Internet provider XS4ALL in the Netherlands encountered several of such devices (link in Dutch) on the wireless networks of their customers and put out a warning. After obtaining a copy of the malware it was discovered that the jailbroken phones, which are exploited through openSSH with a default password, scan IP ranges of mobile internet providers for other vulnerable iPhones, phone home to a C&C botnet server, are able to update themselves with additional malware and have the ability to dump the SMS database as well. Owners of a jailbroken iPhone with a default root password are advised to flash to the latest Apple firmware in order to ensure no malware is present

Many game developers don't think of the iPhone as being a system which has extensive game piracy. But recent comments by developers and analysts have shown otherwise, and Gamasutra speaks to multiple parties to evaluate the size of the problem and whether there's anything that can be done about it. Quoting: 'Greg Yardley confirms that getting ripped off by pirates is the rule rather than the exception. Yardley is co-founder and CEO of Manhattan-based Pinch Media, a company that provides analytic software for iPhone games. ... "What we've determined is that over 60% of iPhone applications have definitively been pirated based on our checks," he reveals, "and the number is probably higher than that." While it's impossible to estimate how much money developers are losing, it involves more than the price of the game, he says. "What developers lose is not necessarily the sale," he explains, "because I don't believe pirates would have bought the game if they hadn't stolen it. But when there is a back-end infrastructure associated with a game, that is an ongoing incremental cost that becomes a straight loss for the developer.

If you think the iPhone app store is the only mobile game store suffering an exodus, some game publishers claim Android's app store isn't much better, for a different reason — it doesn't generate much revenue. In fact, French game developer Gameloft (which owes 13% of its profits to iPhone game sales), said, 'We have significantly cut our investment in Android platform, just like... many others. It is not as neatly done as on the iPhone. Google has not been very good to entice customers to actually buy products. On Android nobody is making significant revenue. We are selling 400 times more games on iPhone than on Android.' So the trade-off seems to be more sales but an annoying approval process, versus a lack of sales promotions and no annoyance around approval. It seems that those in it for money will opt for iPhone, and those in it for distribution will opt for Android. Or maybe someone will get it right one of these days?
