Red, green, blue, yellow. They aren't just four of the bestest shades in Roy G. Biv -- to anyone with a computer and a soul, that particular color combo is permanently etched in the brain as the unchanging constituents of the Windows logo in its many, many forms over the years; Google's logo happens to use them, true, but so far, Android's been green to the bone. Anyhow, you may have already noticed that some of the shots of the Nexus One clearly show a boot screen with a cross pattern colored thusly, and it turns out there's an Android 2.1 dump floating around that's got the animation on board. Of course, dumped ROMs have a tendency to get pulled apart like a turkey at Thanksgiving dinner in a matter of mere hours, and the animation's already found its way onto YouTube. Just because it's in a hacked Flan ROM doesn't mean you should expect to see it on every Android phone under the sun next year -- the animation portrays a nexus, of sorts, which would fit in nicely with a phone of the same name.
Seriously though, check out the wait cursor in Windows Mobile 6.5 for comparison after the break (along with a video of the Nexus One's lovely boot sequence in action).

News via http://0xff.akop.org/2009/12/11/adve...-android-land/
My XBox Live application for Android has been out for a while now, and while feedback has been mixed, it has been rather encouraging. If you’re interested, you can check it out by using Android’s Barcode Scanner app to snap the image to the right.
As feedback shows, a small percentage of users are understandably wary of providing their email address and password to the application, and completely refuse to use it. Most of the current applications that perform similar functions use the XBox Live proprietary API, which requires only a gamertag to obtain similar information. gsDroid, on the other hand, obtains its information by signing in to the XBox Live site and scanning it for information. The upside of this is that I can generally obtain a lot more information than the (free, but proprietary) API can provide. The downside is that it takes a lot of time to fetch this information, and process it raw. And of course, it requires a user’s full account information – the gamertag alone will not suffice.
To make things worse, shortly before releasing gsDroid, I realized that I went about the application completely wrong. gsDroid schedules itself as a service, and performs a full update every 15 minutes. This means that it must refresh the list of games, achievements and friends at each 15-minute interval. Most users need only an up-to-date friends list, and only occasionally an updated list of games; yet gsDroid’s design does not make it easy to do this. Instead of completely scrapping everything, I decided to release gsDroid as a free application.
That is why shortly after releasing the application, I started working on another version, designed from the ground up to be a lot more flexible, and not fetch information unless necessary. Work is progressing along nicely, and I’m already seeing a lot of improvement over gsDroid’s design – for one thing, the seemingly age-long initial synchronization process is completely gone, and while, say, initial fetch of your game list does take some time, it doesn’t take nearly as much time as with gsDroid. For this reason, gsDroid’s not likely to receive any newer features – most of my spare time is currently going towards the new application.
To keep up with the application’s progress, keep checking this site; I will try to post information on new features as it comes up.

Boy Genius Report, the website of the popular Engadget blogger, posted an excerpt from their server visitor log that showed browsers claiming to be using the "iPhone OS 4_0" and "iPhone OS 3_1_3" operating systems accessing the site. Observers have seized on this as evidence that a new OS revisions are being tested on the Internet, though the log entries are not in themselves proof that these systems exist.
Just a few weeks ago, an iPhone carrying the hardware designation "3,1" was spotted by Pandav, the developers of iBart, on the San Francisco Bay Area's rapid transit system. The combination on new hardware codes and software user agents has encouraged the spread of talk about new releases.

A dramatic surge in orders to chipmakers suggests that Apple may ship more than 10 million iPhones per quarter for the first time, according to a organization that follows the Taiwan electronics industry. A study from the Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute in Taipei, quoted by DigiTimes, says that deliveries of chips used in smartphones increased by 31% from spring to summer and asserts that many of them were destined for Apple phones.

December 14th, 2009, 17:46 Posted By: wraggster
If you've seen the internet this weekend, you've heard about it: the "real Google phone" that "changes everything." But before we get carried away, a counterpoint: Google isn't magic. And the Nexus One isn't a game-changer—at least for now.
And I don't mean to say that I don't understand what the Nexus One is, or what Google's trying to do. Nor am I saying that Google plan for the Nexus One—to offer a different type of cellphone buying experience than US customers are accustomed to, and to provide a model for future Android handset—is a particularly bad one. I'm saying that I don't get the hype: Google's Nexus one is an interesting experiment, not some kind of disruptive Google coup. Consider the facts:
It's an HTC Android handset. Sounds familiar! This means that on a material level, it's barely more of a Google phone than the G1—which Google passively oversaw—or the Motorola Droid—which Google actively helped design. And hey, people remember: Google still isn't a hardware company. Not even close.
It's not revolutionary hardware. It's the third (at least) Snapdragon-powered Android phone we've heard about. It's got a 5-megapixel camera. It's got dual microphones, to help with noise reduction. It's fairly thing. These are nice features for a new phone, but they're more or less exactly what we'd expect HTC to be working on next.
It's running a minor variant on Android 2.0. This is version 2.1, to be specific. We've seen builds of 2.1, albiet covered in the Sense UI, leaked for the HTC Hero (spoiler: not that impressive), and combined with the early glimpses we've caught from spy shots, they give the feeling that 2.1 isn't much of a step up from 2.0, which is what the Droid ships with. There will be some pretty new UI flourishes, and maybe a few UX changes. Again: this is typical, paced progress, not a drastic overhaul.
The new business model isn't really new. Even the most breathless commentary on the Nexus One admits that what the Nexus one means is more important than what's on its spec sheet. And yeah, it'll be the first phone marketed as the Google phone, and Google sales strategy—to offer the device without contract first, and probably unlocked, with a (hardware limited) choice of carriers—is foreign to the US market. But it's far from unheard of: you can buy unlocked phones at Best Buy, for God's sake. Oh, and Nokia's been handling their US smartphone releases like this for years.
Google doesn't have superpowers. Using their unmatched internet superpowers, Google can do more to convince the general public that an expensive, unsubsidized phone is a good idea than Nokia, whose marketing efforts have been wimpy and ineffective. But they can't do anything crazy, like give this thing away. They can sell it for cheap by relying on their own advertising network—or hell, their homepage—for advertising, as well as the massive press coverage they're already getting, and selling it at little to no profit. But to be able to match carriers' prices will be a stretch: They can absorb the cost of the phone in month-to-month fees and overage charges. What does Google have? Theoretical advertising revenue?
If what we see now is what we're going to get, the Nexus One is something worth paying attention to. It will be a way for Google to demonstrate what their vision for Android is without carrier interference. They'll control the software experience on the phone; they'll control how it's updated; they'll control what software is and isn't allowed on it. And they could use it to convey an vision for Google Voice, in which Google supplies your number, your nonstandard calling rates and your texting allowance, while carriers simply supply a neutral, dumb and ultimately out-of-sight cellular connection. But even if that is what they're doing—we don't know!—the Nexus One is a first step. It'll be an early product to guide progress, not the product that'll define it.
Whenever we talk about Google, we need to factor in a little windage. They're buzzy, they're huge, and they've thrown plenty of other industries curveballs before. This phone sits at the hype nexus (for lack of a better word) of Google Voice, Android, Google's online services and HTC. But for now, to say that the Nexus One has somehow changed everything is to buy into their reputation too sincerely, and to ascribe to Google mystical qualities—and to take for granted a series of future actions that Google hasn't even hinted at fulfilling yet.
Or, to compress it to 140 characters or less: "The Google phone matters as much as Google makes it matter." For now, people, calm down.

Developers are claiming that ZeniMedia - the parent company of games firm iD Software - has filed a DMCA takedown notice with Google to remove clones of Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein from its Android Market Store.
The move may simply be for copyright protection purposes, but it could signify the imminent debut of official Android versions of some or all of the games.
However, the news is slightly confusing, given that the source code from at least one of the original games, Doom, is available open-source.
Clones of the games are still available from sources other than Android Market, however.
Google's store is certainly coming onto the radar of more games developers right now, thanks to increasing Android handset sales.
However, its Market still has a Wild West feel when it comes to copyright - witness the popularity of retro console emulators, which are barred from some other app stores (including Apple's).

Well here you have it folks, honest-to-goodness pics of the Google Phone... AKA, the Nexus One. As you can see by the photos, the design of the device is largely similar to those we've seen, but the graphic on back is slightly different, and that piece of tape is covering a QR code (how very Google of them). Just like we've heard before, the updated OS features new 3D elements to the app tray, as well as an extended amount of homescreens, though it looks like the lock screen / mute is the same as in Android 2.0.1. Additionally, there's now a new grid icon at the bottom of the homescreen, which when pressed brings up a webOS card-style preview of all homescreen pages -- which raises some interesting possibilities. Apparently there's been a new software update for the device pushed tonight, and sure enough the phone is identified as the Nexus One on the system info page. Quite clearly this device is running on T-Mobile, and is also using WiFi, so there's two other questions you've got answers to. The phone also appears to come loaded up with Google Navigation (a bit of a no-brainer) and the brand-spanking-new Google Goggles. Hardware wise, the Nexus does look incredibly thin and sleek, and while there's not a slew of buttons (those four up front are clearly touch sensitive), there is a dedicated volume rocker along the side. Oh, and note this... no HTC logo anywhere to be found. We'll update the post as / if we get more info, but for now, feast your eyes on the gallery below!

Apple has revamped the design of iPhone app product pages in the desktop version of its App Store.
The changes give more prominence to screenshots, and cut the space available on-screen for descriptive text - although users can still read the full descriptions by clicking a '...More' link.
The new design is certainly visually appealing, and will suit the more impressive-looking apps - particularly games.
However, the changes are also likely to spark some frantic rewriting of app descriptions by developers, to ensure they have a much more sparky introductory paragraph.
There's also a prominent carousel of 'Customers also bought' apps at the bottom of every app product page.

In a report that is raising eyebrows and some laughs throughout the iPhone user community, a marketing firm in Denmark announced that dedicated fans of Apple's smartphones are suffering from a delusional syndrome akin to that experienced by kidnap victims.
Analyst firm Strand Consult released a report called “How will psychologists describe the iPhone syndrome in the future?” in which they compare the often-defensive attitude shown by iPhone owners to ”Stockholm Syndrome.” Stockholm Syndrome is described as a psychological response, in which hostages develop sympathy and loyalty towards their captors.
The reports explains that iPhone fans spend lots of their energy “defending the product despite the shortcomings and limitations of both past and present versions of the iPhone.”

Bank account not mighty enough to handle an underwater EOS 5D Mark II? Fret not, 'cause H2O Audio just made underwater Terminator captures a reality for a comparative pittance. Said outfit has been cranking out waterproof shells for Apple's cash cows for awhile now, but the latest one is of particular interest due to the iPod nano 5G's integrated video recorder. The $79.99 case enables you to capture video clips while under the sea, and considering the multitude of wild and wacky scene modes, we'd say next summer just got a lot more interesting. Just ask that dude up there if you don't believe us.

If you were looking for just one more reason to ditch Sprint then this could be it. A CDMA-flavored Palm Pixi just cleared the FCC -- yes, another one -- and we can say with confidence it's not coming to Sprint this time around. Better yet, Palm's model P121EWW matches up with that P121 code we saw leaked a while back for Big Red (Sprint's model is P120EWW), and this sucker got tested for 802.11b/g WiFi. Looks like that Sprint ad touting the Pixi's non-existent WiFi was more than just wishful thinking. With webOS-powered Palm gear already confirmed on Verizon for "early next year," are you really going to make the jump to a WiFi-less Pixi on Sprint knowing what's on the way? And more importantly, can we expect another terrifying series of ads targeting Sprint this time instead of AT&T?

It's been clear for some time that the iPhone is a huge moneymaker for both Apple and its US carrier AT&T, as well as the constellation of component suppliers that make parts for it. Tracking the actual dollar figures, though, is a difficult task given the complexity of the iPhone ecosystem and the secrecy surrounding Apple and AT&T's business relationship. A post on GigaOM this week, though, took a stab at pulling together what's known and believed to be true about the iPhone business, and did it in an innovative, highly readable format. Instead of a long post filled with dry facts and figures, the site created a graphic with simple charts and graphs. It's an interesting "read."
For the 5.2 million iPhones it built in the third quarter of this year, Apple spent $1 billion with its components...

A new website has been developed that features a petition against Apple to stop their unfair practices and protect developers, called Petition Apple Competition. The petition was started to lobby the FCC, to intervene on consumers behalf regarding Apple’s monopolistic behaviours in the iPhone Application marketplace. Although Apple has seemed to loosen its grip on what is Approved for the AppStore lately, we all know it's still not quite enough.

Look familiar? For a story that broke on Twitter it's only fitting that the first reported picture of the mythical, magical "Google Phone" (AKA, Nexus One) would appear there as well. The tweeted image above appears courtesy of one Cory O'Brien, an account manager at a San Francisco Bay Area marketing agency that does not list Google as a client. That note of caution aside, the image above is an exact match to that leaked HTC Passion / Bravo image from October, only this time lacking the HTC logo on the top-side bezel. Besides the pic, O'Brien tweets that the "Google Phone = iPhone + a little extra screen and a scroll wheel. Great touch screen, and Android." Granted, none of this is confirmed yet, but with Google releasing so many of the devices as part of its "mobile lab" concept, well, we expect to see plenty more sightings in the run up to the rumored January launch.
Update: A quick search for "nexus one" on Google's Picasa photo service reveals several pictures taken with a camera pegged as the HTC Nexus One in the EXIF data. The very first of these geotagged 2592Ă—1944 pixel (that's a 5 megapixel sensor folks, hardly "weirdly large" as described by TechCrunch) images were taken by user Bradley (who just happens to be a Picasa friend to Sergey... hint) in the SF Bay Area on November 27th. A few are clearly lit by an onboard flash as well. In fact, many of the pics appear to be taken from within Google's offices and at Google sponsored events. The quality is not exactly spectacular and that won't likely change in the final product because even Google's bound by the laws of physics when it comes to tiny cellphone sensors.

alphadogg, as is his wont, sends in a Network World piece on the resurgent rumors of a Google Phone.
"Google has handed out a new mobile phone running its Android software to some employees, stirring another wave of speculation that the oft-rumored Google Phone is real. In a blog post on Saturday morning, Google said the phones are being distributed so that workers can experiment with new mobile features. It did not say the device will be a Google-branded phone. Since even before Google unveiled Android, onlookers have wondered whether the search giant will release its own phone. Instead, it released an open source operating system that other hardware vendors can use to make phones."

The issue of App Store rejection has been a sore one for developers for some time. Many have criticized Apple's demanding policies which require apps to be reviewed and approved before releasing them for sale, as well as the lack of transparency and the long delays experienced by some developers. Could Apple finally be responding to all the frustration?
AppleInsider reported today on a company whose app was approved by Apple even though it was in violation of the licensing agreement. The app, iSimulate, used a non-public API which has been used by Apple in the past as a reason to reject applications. But rather than just shoot the dev down, Apple gave its approval with a polite note requesting that they fix it for their next release of the app.
