For those fans of Apple's Boot Camp package, it looks like you might be waiting on the next 'end of year' to use Windows 7 on your shiny silver boxes. Back in October of this year, Apple published a rather short, but affirmative promise stating quite simply that, 'Apple will support Microsoft Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate) with Boot Camp in Mac OS X Snow Leopard before the end of the year. This support will require a software update to Boot Camp.' The support page has no updates regarding the new version. Maybe they're waiting for iSlate?

nottheusualsuspect excerpts from this speculation-laden report at Brighthand that
"Motorola is reportedly working on a device that will have one of the largest displays of any smartphone. Code-named the Shadow, it will sport a 4.3-inch WVGA+ touchscreen, Google's Android OS, and a range of other high-end features. When it comes to screen size, the Shadow will be equaled only by the Windows Mobile-based HTC HD2. The closest Android-powered model will be the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, which will sport a 4.0-inch display. Most other models, like the Motorola Droid and Google Nexus One, have 3.7-inch screens. The display on this upcoming Motorola smartphone will allegedly have a resolution of 850 by 484 pixels.

A report on AnandTech shows a brief video of the tech running Unreal Tournament on an Apple mobile (embedded below), and says Epic is preparing to name a number of other mobile platforms the tech will work with at CES in January.
The demo's modified version of UT uses a virtual on-screen joystick and tilt controls.
Of course, UE3 is a famously powerful engine - and requires sufficient hardware support to boot, so the engine only works on iPhone 3GS given its support for OpenGL ES 2.0, which standard 2G and 3G plus older iPod Touches don't feature.
The AndandTech report says that Epic isn't offering licences for the mobile version - yet. Instead the firm is demoing its new innovations to show how it is forging ahead with new platforms, ideas and technology.
But the iPhone version will eventually see the light of day - so in theory UE users can start toying with ideas now and in future port them over to the mobile version.
The report suggests, however that the mobile version won't be available to those entry-level Unreal users that access the UDK, it will only be available to fully paid-up licensees.

Seems like Apple is not giving up on alternative control methods: They have just updated their March Wiimote-like controller patent, so that means they may still working on it. Or maybe not.
A remote wand for controlling the operations of a media system is provided. The wand may be operative to control the movement of a cursor displayed on screen by the position and orientation at which the wand is held. As the user moves the wand, the on-screen cursor may move. The user may use the wand to control a plurality of operations and applications that may be available from the media system, including for example zoom operations, a keyboard application, an image application, an illustration application, and a media application.
I wish they fixed Apple TV instead, so it could play any media, and not only iTunes-branded stuff. Actually, if I were Apple, I will forget about wands and license Microsoft Natal to integrate it in all their computers, especially the iMac.

Everyone remembers that story about how a bunch of people were suing Apple for potential iPod-induced hearing loss, even though they hadn't lost any hearing. It got shot down last year, appealed, and today, killed for good. CRANK IT.
The case was a bit odd from the start, in that it hinged on the potential for hearing loss, rather than actual, inflicted hearing loss. It was also odd beacuse iPods, which are evidently capable of pumping out about 125dB of sound through a pair of those crappy white earbuds, already have a volume-limiting function. This is in addition to normal volume controls, which apparently don't provide enough guidance to users to prevent them from techno-blasting their eardrums into mucousy, deaf meat-nuggets. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court's decision from last year that iPod could be, and generally are, used safely, and dismissed the lawsuit.
But as my grandfather always used to say, at the center of every frivolous class action technology lawsuit, there lies a grain of truth: iPods and iPhones, if you turn them up too loud, can damage your hearing. So don't, k?

Apple is planning a "big" media event in late January, according to Fox News.
Its sources back up last week's claim by the Financial Times of a 26th January event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.
What's more, Fox News claims that the event will definitely "focus on the mobility space", which it takes as a clear indication of the imminent unveiling of Apple's tablet device - which other recent reports suggest will be called iSlate.
It's all still rumour and speculation, of course. Apple hasn't sent out invites for any event, nor has it ever confirmed publicly that it's even working on a tablet.
That hasn't stopped analysts making their predictions for the device's price and likely sales volume, even if they can't quite agree on the figures.
Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster thinks the iSlate will cost around $600, and may sell 1.4 million units in 2010.
"We expect the tablet to be driven by a new version of Apple’s iPhone OS that runs a new category of larger apps alongside all the current apps from the App Store," he wrote in a research note.
However, Macquarie analyst Phil Cusick has penned his own research note suggesting that the tablet will sell for around $800, and may sell between three and five million units in 2010.

ure, OnLive has already done live demos of its "cloud gaming" service, but it never hurts to get another comprehensive 48-minute video on the subject. In a presentation at Columbia University, CEO Steve Perlman goes over the nitty gritty of how game streaming works, the OnLive user interface (11:53), an inevitable Crysis Wars demo (16:35), Brag Clips (17:49), and of course the iPhone app (19:31). Though cellphone integration is still limited to primarily spectating and social networking functions, PCs and Macs can get gaming via a 1MB browser plugin, or you can grab the microconsole streaming box for your TV, which Steve suggests might be given away for free with OnLive subscriptions. If you have any more unaswered questions, check out the audience Q&A at 33:14, and the full vid awaits after the break.

We've alluded to this a couple times already, but Boy Genius Report is coming out today and saying that Verizon's webOS launch devices early next year will indeed be called the "Pre Plus" and "Pixi Plus." We're able to independently confirm that this is the intel out in the field right now -- so unless Big Red calls an audible, these are the names you should be keeping an eye on as you're scanning the shelves. The report goes on to say that Verizon's models are the same size as Sprint's, but as we've already seen in the FCC, these new versions are going to be supercharged in one way or another -- at the very least, the Pixi should have WiFi on board, a welcome boost. Any way you slice it, it sure looks like Sprint got the short end of this stick, doesn't it?

Microsoft is planning to ramp up its mobile gaming activities, tying Windows Mobile into its Xbox Live community.
At least, that's what it says it's doing in a job advert for a Principal Program Manager - LIVE Engagement Job, which was uncovered by MobileTechWorld:
"We’re connecting players via the LIVE services on new devices beyond the console," says the ad.
"We need a Principle Program Manager who can help drive the platform and bring Xbox LIVE enabled games to Windows Mobile. This person will focus specifically on what makes gaming experiences “LIVE Enabled” through aspects such as avatar integration, social interactions, and multi-screen experiences."
Microsoft is also recruiting a Software Test Engineer with an equally bullish ad that asks "Do you think mobile gaming and always connected internet has the potential to change the way people play games? If so then the Mobile Entertainment is where you need to be."
Windows Mobile has been regularly written off this year in the face of competition from iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and other smartphone platforms.
However, a strong tie-in with Xbox could be just what's needed to revitalise WinMo. Well, for gamers at least.
That said, Microsoft has been trying to take Xbox Live mobile for several years now through its Live Anywhere initiative. The job postings indicate that it might finally happen in 2010.

It looks as if Duke Nukem isn't completely 'nuked' after all. Someone has ported the 90s classic on to a Nokia N900. As you'll see in the video, you control Duke using the Qwerty keypad and shoot using the touchscreen. I'm wondering how long it will take for this to get on other mobile platforms."
In other Duke news, reader Jupix points out that 3D Realms' CEO Scott Miller recently said, "There are numerous other Duke games in various stages of development, several due out this year. We are definitely looking to bring Duke into casual gaming spaces, plus there are other major Duke games in production.

Well well. Look at this. Taking a page from the CES-challenging Apple / Macworld playbook, Google has announced a press event on January 5th (just like we told you) in Mountain View, stating:
With the launch of the first Android-powered device just over a year ago, we've seen how a powerful, open platform can spur mobile product innovation. And this is just the beginning of what's possible.
Please join us in Mountain View on January 5, for an Android press gathering.
If this lines up with the news we've seen recently, it's likely a Nexus One announcement will be the order of the day, and most (if not all) of your nagging questions will get answered. You know we'll be there live... so hang on to your hats, and mark down the date!

Apple CEO Steve Jobs won over 30% of the vote in an online poll published by personal finance and investing news site SmartMoney.com, enough to earn their "Person of the Decade" title by a solid margin over luminaries such as Warren Buffett (17%), Ben Bernanke (13%) and Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page (12%). From the article, 'Certainly, Jobs accomplished more than probably any other CEO since he returned to Apple in the late 1990s: Not only did he revive sales at the failing computer company, he led the stock to a more than 700% increase in value, and forever changed the way people buy and listen to music

Today around 12:05 EST there was a Packages file distributed via macciti/zodttd's source that causes cydia to not launch properly. The issue is well known and a solution is being worked out. Please do not panic/overreact and restore. Again, DO NOT restore your device.
More Information:
Quote:
The issue was caused by a unicode character used in zodttd's packages file. This character brought out a bug in cydia which caused it to not launch. (a similar problem was created in the past when another community source missed a line break between entries.) This is not the fault of anyone at macciti or zodttd this is simply a bug in cydia.
Fix:
This is a simple fix really.
Connect to your iphone/ipod via either ssh, mobile terminal, ifile, diskaid or some other type of usb file system browser. Browse to /var/lib/apt/lists/
Delete cydia.zodttd-1.com_repo_cydia_dists_stable_main_binary-iphoneos-arm_Packages.
Install the new update to cydia to fix this.
IF you have apt7 installed you should be able to just run the following:
Code:
apt-get update

While Palm's Pre is many things to many people it still can't game. Oh sure, it'll play Magic Fortune Ball like a champ but when it comes to intensive 3D action the Pre is as helpless as a would-be terrorist trying to ignite his underwear. See, webOS and the Mojo SDK currently can't exploit the GPU the way other smartphone platforms can. Rewind a few weeks, however, and we're reminded of a video showing EA's Need for Speed Undercover running impossibly smooth on a Pre. At the time, the video and claims of the device running Flash were shot down as fake largely due to the accompanying screen caps of the purportedly new App Catalog. Well guess what? Those screen caps were vindicated today with the webOS 1.3.5 update that just so happened to launch a new App Catalog matching the leaked images, exactly. That lends credence to the video then doesn't it, while hinting at future apps and games with full OpenGL graphics support. Is that the big reveal at CES alongside enhanced Pre+ and Pixi+ handsets headed to Big Red? We'll find out shortly enough -- until then check the gameplay after the break.
